Park Clean Up By Margie TIERNEY HATS off to the community of Tea Gardens when it comes to keeping Anzac Park spick and span. A group of Rotarians joined the Clean up Australia day event last Sunday, their target to tackle Anzac Park on Marine Drive. “The area was mostly very clean, the biggest culprits being the cigarette butts,” said Rotarian Dudley Mercer. And the old story, many hands make light work came into play with the area cleaned up in just an hour. “It’s a real pat on the back to locals and tourists alike that the park was so clean to begin with.” This year marks 30 years since the first Clean Up Sydney Harbour event

This is the second stage of a sand replenishment program after 5,000 cubic metres was placed on the Beach in June 2018. “We’re doing this to place a sand buffer on the Beach, which is designed to be stripped during an adverse weather event, in case this occurs during winter.” The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage has provided 50% of the cost of the project, with

q POOL OPEN ALL YEAR: Tea Gardens Swimming Pool.

Jeanette recently started a petition and has gathered more than 400 signatures in just a few weeks. “We really need a year round heated pool in this area for all locals but especially since we have an ageing population,” Jeanette said. “The needs of the disabled and handicapped must be acknowledged, honoured and catered for in our community as they are in the community at large.” In an ideal world, Jeanette is calling for the Tea Gardens pool to be covered and extra solar strips installed to maintain warmth for

year round use. Jeanette has written to the Mayor and has the backing of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association. Currently residents have to travel to Raymond Terrace during the autumn and winter months if they want to swim or use the pool for hydrotherapy, exercise or swimming lessons. The Tea Gardens pool is only open from September to April. For more information, Jeanette Hart can be contacted on 0414 559 097. quality, liveability and performance of all landscapes.” As part of the strategy a framework will be prepared to understand the issues and opportunities for trees and vegetation across the area. Community engagement will be a critical part of developing a greening strategy. “Once we have scoped the strategy we will develop a community engagement plan, which will be adopted by Council, to ensure the views and aspirations of our community are taken into account in the preparation of the strategy.”

‘STRATEGICALLY increasing the quality and quantity of vegetation across the region’ is the aim of a greening strategy according to MidCoast Council. Last week’s Council meeting unanimously endorsed a recommendation to prepare a greening strategy, with a further report to be presented by June outlining a scope and timeline for the production of a strategy. The strategy will look at where vegetation controls will be harmonised across the region and how native vegetation will be protected, according to Council’s Acting Director of Planning and Natural Systems, Paul De Szell. Currently there are tree protection controls in parts of Great Lakes, but no controls in place across the rest of the MidCoast Council area. Council had, in September last year, resolved to amend the Great Lakes Development Control Plan to remove all tree and vegetation controls and hold a workshop to discuss the introduction of a register to protect significant trees. Following this Council received a significant amount of correspondence from the community, including environmental groups, expressing their concern with the position. “Since that time a number of workshops have been held with staff and Councillors to discuss principles and concepts around tree protection controls and how best to protect vegetation across the local government area,” Mr De Szell said. As a result of these discussions, a recommendation was put to this week’s Council meeting that a greening strategy be undertaken. “A greening strategy is about strategically increasing the quality and quantity of all vegetation and open space in a particular setting.” Mr De Szell said a greening strategy requires significant thought given Council manages public spaces, street trees, road reserves, parks and natural areas.

In NAD [2018] NSWCATGD 1 (a case involving the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal) an elderly mother diagnosed with dementia was taken to live with her son. One of the mother’s daughters complained that as a result of this move, she was denied the ability to see her mother. She complained that her brother had no landline at his home and if she rang to speak to her mother, she was denied telephone access. The distance between her home and her brother’s home also made it very difficult for her to visit her mother. The brother said that his sister only had to “knock” on his “front door” and she would be let in. The Tribunal was not convinced. The members stated that under the

Guardianship Act 1987 there is an obligation to protect the mother from “neglect, abuse and exploitation”. The Tribunal noted that there is no definition of “abuse” in the Act and whilst the term is “commonly understood to refer to forms of physical violence”, a more nuanced understanding, particularly in relation to older people can include “stopping an older person from seeing family and friends”. The Tribunal therefore appointed an independent guardian to “make decisions” for the elderly mother with an “access function” so that the guardian could make decisions about the manner in which contact and access could take place between the mother and members of her family.

World’s Great Shave By Margie TIERNEY TEA GARDENS pet shop owner Linda Trappitt is calling on the community to help out with a cause close to her heart. She’s taking the plunge and joining the World’s Greatest Shave, lopping off her locks to raise money to support people living with blood cancer. “I did it around 10 years ago and thought it’s time to do it again,” Linda said. Linda is making a fun day of it, inviting the community to a sausage sizzle at her pet shop on Myall Street.

Just for kids Win $10.00 COLOUR-IN COMP

“There’ll also be balloons for the kids and an auction for the privileged bidder to shave my head any way they wish,” Linda said. It’s an all day event with bidding starting at around noon on Friday 15 March. Anyone can join the campaign, and you don’t have to go all the way as in shave, you can colour your hair or even wax. So far the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ has raised more than 4 and a half million dollars to help give families facing blood cancer the emotional and practical support they need, as well as funding vital research to help more people survive the disease.

Kids Clean Up By Margie TIERNEY

OUR youngsters at Tea Gardens Public School got down and dirty last Friday as they joined in the nationwide ‘Clean Up Australia’ campaign. Leading the schools effort was Isla Brumby, this year’s Minister for the Environment and School Deputy Prime Minister. Isla said, “It was a nice but gross experience, nice meaning we’re doing a kind thing for our environment and gross meaning how much rubbish we still found.” Matilda Fidden said, “There was rubbish all throughout and under the bushes and our class was able to remove it. ”We found heaps of paper, slushies and straws,” Kade O’Neill said. From Jessie Lawler’s perspective, “We were in the moors behind the school and found a tyre that was too heavy to move and heaps of plastic bags, plastic wrappers and tin foil.” She added, “Clean up Australia Schools Day

is important because it could lead to the ocean and many more animals could be affected. Natureh Fenton-Holt said, “Fortunately, none of our bags were full meaning our school is relatively clean which is amazing. And by the end of the day Isla summed it up for all involved. “The school now looks much cleaner and rubbish free.” A job well done.

MONDAY 25th February: Unfortunately our 2 teams entered in the Newcastle District Triples Competition were both defeated in Round 1 of this event. Robyn Beaumont, Loretta Baker and Maynie Roberts bowled at Hexham and lost to a team from Lambton Park, 29 v 8. Lynda Richards, Karen McPhie and Lynne Green went down 27 v 15 to a Soldiers Point side, bowled at Edgeworth. The winners of the District triples were Kate Matthews, Genevieve Delves and Natasha Scott from Raymond Terrace. Great to see our members participating in District events. Tuesday 26th February: Social bowls, played 3 games of Fours and a game of Triples with Sheril Johnson playing “swinger lead”. Play was on the grass which did prove a challenge for some of our bowlers. A very evenly matched game for Ingrid Luck, Lynne Nightingale, Pam Gilchrist & Judy McGavock v Jan Coomer, Judi Polak, Jill McBride and Elizabeth Kelly resulting in a 20 all draw. A narrow victory for Sheril, Dorothy Thompson and Dawn May in the Triples game just winning by 1 shot against Sheril, Beverly Thrift and Christine Fossey, the score 14 v 13. A good win for Francis Betar, Bev Rhodes, Bev Stephens and Loretta Baker 19 v Jean Glover, Lynda Richards, Karen McPhie and Dale Winter 10. Robyn Beaumont, Jeanette Emmett, Karen Green and Lyn Green proved to be too strong a team

against Dawn Jones, Robyn Webster, Pat Baker and Maynie Roberts winning 27 v 7. The winners on the day winning with the highest margin were Robyn, Jeanette, Karen and Lynne. The winner of the voucher to the Myall Bistro and Café was Judi Polak. Birthday greetings to Pat Baker. Thursday 28th February: A good roll up of bowlers. Prior to play Club President Robyn Webster presented Karen Green and Pat Baker their badge/certificate for being members of WBNSW for 10 years. She also welcomed a new bowler Joan Hannigan. Format for play was a game of Fours and 3 games of Triples, 12 ends. Sue Morris, Ingrid Luck, Lynne Nightingale and Judy McGavock defeated Jan Coomer, Judi Polak, Jill McBride and Dot Dallas 19 v 10. Bev Rhodes, Bev Stephens and Loretta Baker had a lead of 4 shots at the 9th end Lynda Richards, Karen McPhie and Dale Winter made a late come back holding a 1 shot lead on the 2nd last end. Loretta’s ladies picked up 2 shots on the final end winning 10 v 9. Bev Dunn, Jeanette Emmett and Lily Smith had a 5 shot lead on the 7th end Joan Hannigan, Liv Everingham and Jean Glover picked up a handy 4 shots on the 8th end but ended up losing the match 10 v 7. A good win for Robyn Webster, Maynie Roberts & Pat Baker 16 v Karen Elizabeth Kelly and Lynne Green 9. Coming events: Monday 4th March: Pre Pennant practice with teams from Karuah. Tuesday 5th March : Major Singles Club Championship resumes. Monday 11th March Newcastle District Fours Competition commences.

q Finalists for the Club Minor Singles Championship, Col Saillard shapes up to Ron Rowe. Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 27 FEBRUARY: Well the Wednesday Nominated Triples is still proving popular with 56 players taking part today. The summer format, adopted by the bowls committee, proved very successful with not one game being compromised and not one player suffering any heat related condition. As from today, the playing conditions reverted back to the two-game system of 12 ends alternating from the grass and synthetic and the old starting time of 9.30 am for 10.00 am start. A little change to the past format in declaring the winners of the day by rewarding the best performing teams on the grass and synthetic. The winning teams came from the first game and Bob Peady, Doug Naylor and Alan Greenhalgh the best team on the synthetic with a score of + 19. On the grass green a score

of +11 was good enough for the team of Tom Short, Geoffrey Muggleton and Denis Ashbridge to claim the prize. The lucky card draw result was Gary Wynne, John Moore and Neville Vaughan, (welcome back Nev). 3 March: After the close games recorded in the quarterfinals of the Minor Pairs Championship last Sunday, bowls watchers were expecting some fireworks today in the semi-finals. It was not to be! Col Saillard was taking on 3-time finalist, Doug Naylor and Ron Rowe was opposed to Alan Greenhalgh. There were contrasting styles in the first game. Col is a short side specialist and Doug prefers to get some drift playing the wide side. Doug would have been disappointed with his game today, it went AWOL, and Col was largely unchallenged on the short side of the green. Col ran out an easy winner in the end winning 31-10. In the remaining game, both players would agree that

the game did not live up to their expectations with many “sloppy” ends. The break came for Ron at about the 12th end and in the following 8 ends he put on 15 shots. Alan managed a mini comeback but it was too little too late with Ron winning 3119. The final between Col Saillard and Ron Rowe will be played next Sunday and hopefully both players will bring their “A” game with them. In other news; Entries are being received for the Club Major Pairs with 13 teams nominating so far. Round 1 will commence on Sunday 24 March. The first round of the Newcastle District Pennants will kick off next Saturday 9 March with the First National Grade 4’s playing away at Karuah in a local derby. Grade 6 will challenge Wallsend Diggers 2 at home and Grade 7 will travel to Wallsend. Good luck to all our teams!

access and a second, three way bathroom are in close proximity. A formal lounge room leads into a dining room, featuring bay windows with surrounding garden outlooks. The kitchen remains in the heart of the home with open plan living allowing for continual family involvement. Large living spaces are separated into a dining room and family room complete with sliding doors and air conditioning. Gas cooktops

and heating are welcoming inclusions. A generous undercover alfresco area leads off from the kitchen/dining areas and provides an excellent, and very private, entertaining area. Internal access from the double garage conveniently opens out to this space. Side gates allow for access to the backyard. OUR Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club have added another Gold Medal to their growing trophy cabinet. Peter Rogers told News Of The Area, “Our Opens Men’s Crew, our Hunter Branch representative Under/19 crew and the clubs Masters Crew travelled to Pacific Palms near Forster for the Battle of the Boats.” ‘The Battle of the Boats’ Carnival sees the best surfboat crews from New South Wales and Queensland including the current Australian Representative crew compete for top honours. Peter said, “The Open Men’s A crew narrowly missed the final by one place, the new Under/19 crew, competing against older and more experienced competition, were competitive all weekend but

GOLD MEDAL: Peter Rogers, Masters Crewmember.

the Masters Crew dominated the racing to come away with the Gold medal.” The Masters crew of Peter Rogers, Ian Taylor, Greg Ross, Peter McClennan and swept by James Fitzpatrick were undefeated on the last days racing to come away with the Gold medals from a very elite racing carnival. “It is great that the clubs crews continue to do well,” Peter said. “The family atmosphere and the continued competition success the club generates at present has made for a great feeling amongst the entire Boat section.” Late last year, the Club’s Open Reserve Men’s Boat Crew created history for the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club when they were crowned World Champions at the International Life Saving

World Championships in Adelaide. The results from the Pacific Palms ‘Battle of the Boats’ Carnival places the crews in a great position to be successful heading into the upcoming State and Australian Championships.
