Care for wildlife By Daniel SAHYOUN

CONSTANT care and a demanding night-time feeding routine are all part of the job for wildlife rescue volunteer Teresa Mort. Teresa has been involved with the wildlife care and rescue group FAWNA for several years and gives her time to help sick and injured wildlife recuperate and get back into the wild. “Most of the birds, kangaroos and wallabies that come in have been hit by cars,” she said. “It’s about looking after them and healing their injuries then getting them back into the wild where they belong.” Teresa is currently

In the last financial year, FAWNA’s volunteers handled over 3400 sick and injured animals, birds and reptiles. Teresa said the first few hours after finding injured wildlife are critical. “It’s important to keep them somewhere dark, warm and feeling secure until you can get them to a carer,” she said. “Sometimes people will find a cute little baby that’s injured and will hold or cuddle it, but this can scare them terribly and they can die of fright.” Teresa also said it’s important not to feed injured wildlife when found.

THE formation of MidCoast Council is being followed by the region’s business chambers with plans underway to establish the MidCoast Chamber of Commerce. Business chambers from Bulahdelah, the Myall Coast, Gloucester, Forster and the Manning Valley have shown their support for establishing the combined chamber. NSW Business Chamber Regional Manager Kellon Beard said the MidCoast Chamber will benefit
businesses throughout the region. “It will give greater representation to all the chambers in the MidCoast LGA within the new council,” he said. “All chambers will be represented by members, so it will be representative of all businesses right across the MidCoast region.” Whilst each of the chambers will still operate within their communities, Mr Beard said the MidCoast Chamber would further support the region’s
economic development. “We’re basically merging resources and giving a collective voice to the community of the MidCoast region,” he said. “Smaller chambers will benefit because they will not just be going to council or state members on their own, they will be going with the collective voice of all the chambers in the area.” Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce President John Sahyoun said the combined chamber will result in new opportunities.
“We will be able to achieve bigger outcomes for our members and improved economies of scale,” he said. “This will certainly give our local chamber a bigger voice.” Representatives from the region’s chambers have met several times and are currently developing a constitution. Mr Beard told News Of The Area the MidCoast Chamber will be established early in the new year with an expected launch in February.

We all know that warranties play a significant part of negotiating sale transactions. The usual dance involves the Purchaser seeking extensive warranties and the Vendor resisting with the end result somewhere in between. There are a couple of techniques that may assist a Vendor/Vendor’s Solicitor in negotiating warranties that are not too onerous on the Vendor without derailing the transaction altogether. These are the notions of warranty ‘thresholds’ and ‘caps’. These concepts can be drafted to apply to an extensive warranty list to reduce the potential damage or loss that may be suffered by a Vendor for a warranty breach.
Thresholds & Caps Warranty thresholds can be drafted to operate so that a Purchaser may only make a claim for a breach of a warranty if the loss or damage flowing from that breach meets a certain percentage of the purchase price (i.e. 25% of the purchase price). In effect, liability will only be triggered if the breach incurs a loss or damage of a certain amount. In the same way that a threshold will stop a frivolous claim, a cap may limit liability beyond a certain percentage of the purchase price (i.e. 50% of the purchase price). Thus, limiting the Vendor’s exposure. Whilst caps and thresholds will also likely be negotiated keenly, they are useful techniques in a good lawyer’s toolkit.

TAKE a bow, the women of the Myall Coast. The Christmas spirit of giving is alive and well. Late last month News Of The Area appealed to locals to join the ‘It’s In the Bag’ campaign being run by the ‘Share the Dignity’ Charity. Locals were asked to donate a handbag they no longer needed and fill it with essential items and maybe a treat or two to make a woman in need feel special at Christmas. “Initially, it was to supply sanitary items, because when women are forced out of their homes because of domestic situations, quite often they leave with absolutely nothing,” Joanne Kohlhagen told News Of The Area.

A DELICIOUS sausage sizzle, free creamy sponge cake and face painting for the kiddies were just some of the happenings on offer at the Grand Opening of the new IGA in Hawks Nest last Saturday. Outside the store, Rotary Club members manned the barbecue feeding a steady stream of hungry shoppers with snags and onions. Inside, shoppers were greeted by employees Colleen Ross and Betty Sinclair, handing out cake and plenty of cheer. Betty has worked at the
Dungog IGA for eight years but volunteered her time to come to Hawks Nest and help out with the Grand Opening. “It’s been absolutely wonderful, great reviews, people have been really wonderful, they love the shop,” said Betty. “There’s everything here, it’s a classy store.” It’s been a busy year for owners Peter Trappel and James Lovegrove. “It’s a big job starting from scratch, but the young staff are coming along well,” Peter said. IGA has now launched its customer loyalty program, which is a great incentive
ON Tuesday 30 November President Glenn Conroy, Vice President Bea Treharne, along with Committee members, Leslie Falla and Linda Conroy from the Hawks Nest Bridge Club (HNBC) attended a presentation ceremony at the MidCoast Council Taree office where a cheque for $33,000 was presented from the Stronger Communities Grant. With the amalgamation of the three councils earlier this year, the MidCoast Council set up a grant of over $500,000 for 2016 to be utilised throughout the council areas and made available to various community projects. In all the Council received over 70 applications for this scheme which resulted in 17 worthy recipients being successful. To be eligible for funding, applicants were required to demonstrate their project delivered social, cultural, economic or environmental benefits to the local community, that it addressed an identified
need, and that any ongoing costs were able to be met without additional funding into the future. As many readers will be aware, the HNBC has been fundraising to make the clubhouse a reality for several years and we were able to demonstrate that we had already raised at least twice the amount applied for towards our project. Earlier this year the HNBC negotiated and signed a lease with the (then) Great Lakes Council for land in Yamba Street, Hawks Nest on which the Club proposes to build a Clubhouse which will be made available to other like-minded community organisations. It was pleasing to see grants also made to the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Pre School and North Arm Cove Residents Association. Hawks Nest Bridge Club members are very grateful to the Council for their grant, though fund raising continues to reduce the amount needed to borrow.
for locals and community organisations. Every dollar spent in store earns two points and shoppers can allocate all or some of their points to go to a not-for-profit organisation or charity. Peter is calling on local schools, charities and other not-for-profit organisations to drop in and sign up, so they can benefit from the program financially. Local shoppers are also encouraged to do the same or pop online and become a loyalty member. IGA will also be extending its shopping hours over the six week Christmas Holiday period from 7am to 9pm, 7 days a week.

NSW Teachers Federation Representative and Bulahdelah Central School teacher Pam Gollan said protecting teachers’ salaries and working conditions was important for meeting the educational needs of students. “If we don’t protect our working conditions, we could end up with increased class sizes and overworked teachers which really takes a lot out of the focus and engagement of students’ learning outcomes,” she said. “Those things are really important so it’s not all about the teachers, it’s about the students in the long run.”
Mrs Gollan told News Of The Area the inconvenience to students and parents is always taken into account when planning stop-work meetings. “What this means is schools will remain open with minimal supervision for one-hour while Federation Members attend the meetings,” she said. “Schools will resume normal classes following the meetings.” Mrs Gollan said she was unsure at this stage if there would be further industrial action in the new year. Best Beach By Daniel SAHYOUN
HAWKS Nest Beach, also known as Bennetts Beach, is officially one of Australia’s best. The beach was named 15th on the ‘101 Best Beaches’ list released last weekend, ranking all 11,761 Australian beaches. The newly christened “Cossies Beach” on Cocos Keeling Island off the coast of Western Australia took out the title of Australia’s best beach. It was named in honour of Sir Peter Cosgrove and has been described by Tourism Australia Beach Ambassador Brad Farmer as a “little slice of paradise.” Nudey Beach on Fitzroy Island in Far North Queensland was

Kerry Anne has more than 200 dolls and just loves restoring them. She calls it her therapy, having been electrocuted in a work accident seven years ago. Of course there were also plenty of bargains to be had at the car boot sale. “I just sold a whole lot of books to a little girl for $2; she’s obviously a good reader and she was just thrilled with all these good books,” said Church volunteer Caroline

Mr Farmer with help from Sydney University Professor Andrew Short visited every single beach named on the list. The top 101 were selected based on “the views, the sand, surf, bordering headlands and a range of supporting amenities.” Hawks Nest Beach is described in the ‘101 Best Beaches’ publication as a “laid-back holiday favourite that ticks so many boxes for just about everyone.” “It’s been a highly favoured retreat for Prime Ministers to tradies to toddlers learning how to catch their first wave,” they say. “The views to the offshore southernmost rain forested islands and the sweep of white sand and aqua waters make Hawks Nest

This moving tribute has been performed before, and to wide acclaim. Amahl and the Night Visitors was written by Carlo Menotti in 1952. Directed by Diane Williams, this one-act opera tells the story of Amahl, a crippled boy, and his mother who are visited by the Magi on their way to find the Christ child. With beautiful music and a very talented local cast this is an ideal first time opera, and is suitable for the whole family. Tickets are $10 per person and available at the door.

Vibrant Spaces Expands FOLLOWING the success of the Vibrant Spaces initiative across the Manning Region, MidCoast Council has given the green light to extend the program to the town centres of Bulahdelah, Gloucester, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Pacific Palms and Stroud, on a six month trial basis. The concept behind Vibrant Spaces is that businesses use the footpath, free of charge, in return for some innovative thinking and a common sense approach to adding colour, products, chairs and tables onto our streets. The aim is to encourage people to stop, linger, shop and dine, which not only benefits local businesses, but makes for a more pleasant shopping experience. The former Greater Taree City Council introduced the initial Vibrant Spaces trial in Taree’s town
NewsOfTheArea.com.au
centre back in September 2014, which resulted in an overwhelming increase in sales, foot traffic and street vibrancy. Following this trial, the program was implemented in Taree and extended to the town centres of Harrington, Wingham and Old Bar. MidCoast Council’s Director of Community Spaces and Services, Paul De Szell, is excited to roll the initiative out across the wider MidCoast region and give these town centres a new lease of life. “We’ve found that relaxing the red tape and encouraging businesses to think outside the box when it comes to using the footpath in front of their business can have an incredibly positive impact on our town centres,” Mr De Szell said. “As far as we’re concerned, Vibrant Spaces is a win-win and we’re looking forward to seeing
the innovative ideas that local businesses come up with.” The six month Vibrant Spaces trial will kick off on Monday 5 December 2016 and run through to Monday 5 June 2017. During this time, Council staff will be coming out to each area to provide guidance and assistance for those who need it. Businesses wanting to participate are encouraged to look at the town centre maps on Council’s website to see if they’re eligible for the trial and register by completing the simple online form at www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/ VibrantSpaces. For more information, businesses can get in touch with the team at MidCoast Council via email council@midcoast.nsw.gov.au or phone 6592 5399.

GOLF Hectic Social Pace for Bowlers Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS
AS the end of the year approaches things are getting hectic on the social scene for the women bowlers but slowing down a bit on the green. Social bowls will be played up to and including December 8, but after this date there will be no bowls played until early January. Coming events include Presentation Night on Monday 5 December and Break Up Day on Thursday 8 December. Weather conditions on Tuesday 29 November were to say the least “a bowler’s
worst nightmare” with strong south-easterly winds blowing at about 25km per hour with wind gusts up to 33km per hour. Two games of fours and two games of threes were played the winners with a win plus ends being Robyn Beaumont, Karen Green, Dale Winter and Maynie Roberts. On Thursday 1 December, just a small group of bowlers turned up for bowls. Rain was falling and play was nearly called off, but luckily it wasn’t and soon after the commencement of play the rain eased off and the sun shone. Format for the day was a game of triples and a game of

Sunday 4 December twenty four bowlers from the Sunday Bowlers, (Introduction to Bowls) travelled to Dungog for a game of bowls and lunch with the Dungog Travelling Bowlers. A great day was had by all, good company, fun bowls and an enjoyable lunch. Thanks to Robyn Webster for organising the trip and to Ron Webster for driving us all there in the Tea Gardens Country Club bus.
Novocastrian Swimming Meet SWIMMING
Myall Masters Swimming Club By Rhonda BOBAKO SIX Myall Masters Swimming Club members travelled to Charlestown for the popular Novocastrian Swimming Meet. Representing the club in the pool were Linda Stubbs, Leon Bobako, Chris Lock and Chris Mobbs. All swimmers recorded strong performances, gaining for Myall Masters 9th placing from 27 Clubs. Bobako and Lock scooped the pool with first placings in all events entered. Shirley Darch and Val Mobbs gained further practical skills in timekeeping

While members are encouraged to challenge themselves in this manner, fitness and improvement of technique is the main focus. These skills are developed by attending regular training sessions. The Club is fortunate to have three coaches, Leon Bobako, Brad Jensen and Mal Motum, who give of their time to keep up-to-date with current techniques and training programs to benefit Club members. Coaches Bobako and Jensen recently attended a coaching seminar
with high profile coach and swimmer Mark Morgan. The fun social side of Masters Swimming will bring members together on Friday, 9 December to celebrate Christmas. for a win plus end meant that to get in the money, players had to win both games.
Achieving just that was the team of David Garcia, Greg Smith, Bob Weir and Bill Whalan. They finished with +56. This team managed to win all but two ends in their first game and picked up another 20 points in winning their second.
The triples combination of Ron Green, Neil Kibble and Leigh Hunt came in second on +55, edging out the Fours combination of Kevin Barbie, Bruce Everitt, Frank Zumbo and Henk Faber, who finished third on +52. 2 December
Summer arrived with a vengeance today with the temperature hovering in the

It put a few intending players off but 12 diehard bowlers braved the heat to contest the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs.
