Entertainers’ Final Gift to Community

Eight women from North Arm Cove recently launched their collaborative novel ‘Matilda May Legacy’ at the Galleries in the Garden in Tea Gardens. More than 60 people attended the launch, celebrating three years of hard work by the writing group which culminated in a book of fictional short stories relating to the founding of Matilda Bay. Unlike an order of a court or tribunal, an employer has the right to decline to implement a recommendation of the AHRC relating to criminal record discrimination. Suncorp declined to pay compensation to the applicant on the basis that is disagreed with the Commission’s findings. The AHRC does not have the power to make respondents comply with or implement its recommendations. This decision highlights that while the AHRC can make findings that a person has been discriminated against on the basis of their criminal record, the AHRC does not have the power to enforce the recommendations that it makes to remedy discrimination. Had the finding been made in a court or tribunal, the orders would have been enforceable (subject to appeal rights).

No Hall, No Lunch For 16 years Tea Gardens local Sue Douglas has been donating her time and energy into putting on a community Christmas lunch for those who may not have family or friends nearby.
By Margie TIERNEY
FOR 16 years Tea Gardens local Sue Douglas has been donating her time and energy into putting on a community Christmas lunch for those who may not have family or friends nearby. But unfortunately, there’ll be no such lunch this year. Traditionally, Sue was given the use of the Masonic
Hall on Myall Street to cook for up to a hundred people on 25 December. It took months of planning and gathering donations of gifts and food to ensure a great Christmas was had by all. But Sue told News Of The Area, “The Mason’s Head Office has told me the hall won’t be made available to me this year, so that’s it, no lunch.” Sue added, “The hall has
industrial size ovens which I need and there’s no other venue in town like it.” For Sue, the last 16 years has been a labour of love, bringing the community together on a day when many find themselves at a loss. There’s little doubt Sue will not be the only person who’s saddened by the loss of this Christmas tradition.

Remembrance Day Address By Margie TIERNEY NEWS Of The Area, recently had the privilege of sitting down for a one-on-one chat with Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair ahead of this weekend’s Remembrance Day service in Tea Gardens. The former Governor of New South Wales, will be giving the key address at Sunday’s combined service in Anzac Park on Sunday 11 November. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended four years of one of the bloodiest conflicts in human history, World War One. For Peter Sinclair, his first memories as a child, were of a country at war during the years of 1939 to 1945. “I was born in 1934, so my generation grew up during World War Two,” Rear Admiral Sinclair said. “All my Uncles went to war and my Father was involved in the Merchant Navy so I was naturally fascinated by ships.” “I joined the Navy League
Sea Cadets at the age of eight where we learned how to be a sailor, and the principal purpose was, if the Japanese invaded, we’d know what to do,” Peter said with a wry smile. “Growing up in the shadow of World War Two, gave me a realisation of what it was to serve and sparked my desire to be in the Navy. Peter Sinclair joined the Navy at age 13 and went on to serve for another 42 years. “I had my share of events, and served on 16 ships, seven of which had World War Two experience and had lost men.” “I was always very conscience of the fact that I was ‘watch keeping’ in a place where people had died,” the Rear Admiral said. After his naval career, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair went on to serve as Governor of New South Wales for 6 years and was awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 1992. In retirement, Peter Sinclair’s fascination with ships has continued with
his hobby of building model ships. He’s also a great admirer of Australian Poet, C.J. Dennis. But when it comes to the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, Rear Admiral Sinclair hopes that those who gather for Remembrance Day will remember the sacrifices made by those who’ve gone before us, so that ‘today’ we live in freedom. “Remembrance Day is a time, when I not only pay respects to those who’ve given the lives and their world for their Country, but also a time when I remember a lot of old shipmates and people with whom I served with, in the hope that they will never be forgotten.” “I think Remembrance Day will continue as an opportunity to recognise Australians who have fought for their country throughout our history from the Boer War onwards, but God forbid there will be no more wars, like the ghastly, dreadful, never to be repeated World War One.”

Free Holiday for Farmers By Margie TIERNEY LATEST statistics from the Bureau of Meteorology come as no surprise, that so far, 2018 has been one of the hottest and driest years on record. The months from January to October were some of the driest on record for New South Wales, and the State also had its hottest January to October on record, with temperatures 2.2 degrees above average. As for the drought according to the Bureau. “Meteorological drought is rarely broken in a single event or month, with regular rainfall over a period of several months required to remove rainfall deficiencies of the magnitude of those

Trevor and Jen Nichols recently did their bit by offering their Hawks Nest holiday home free of charge to drought stricken farmers and their families, who were in desperate need of a break. “We could have donated money to a relief fund but we thought of another way we could help farming families,” Jen Nichols said. “We offered up our Hawks Nest Home to four families from Upper Horton, Quirindi and the Tamworth districts so they were able to have a break away by the sea throughout the month of October.”

Recorded by renowned musician Robbie Long at Funky Lizard Studio in Newcastle, the CD features 8 songs, including 4 original numbers. “We were lucky enough to play at the Karuah Bluegrass Festival this year, and won their “Political Agitation” songwriting contest,” said Leanne Barrett, who plays accordion & percussion in the band. “The prize included recording time at Funky Lizard Studio, which gave us the incentive to record a CD,”said Ms Barrett. Jabiru vs Kangaroo By Margie TIERNEY
IT was a case of ‘What in the world are you doing in my backyard?’ when a kangaroo recently came face to face with a Jabiru in suburban Tea Gardens. The Jabiru, as it’s commonly known, is Australia’s only representative of the stork family, and usually hangs out in the Northern Rivers of New South Wales. Tea Gardens local Brian Beattie, captured these photos of the Jabiru, who he’s nicknamed Fred. “He or she arrived in early August and was very disoriented and weak” Brian said. “It didn’t seem to be able to fly but with good feeding, as in basa fillets from Coles,
it appears to have gained strength,” Brian said. “We thought he’d taken off but last week we saw him again in the pond adjacent to Shoreline Drive.” The black neck stork likes to inhabit freshwater marshes, wetlands, lakes, and mangroves so it’s not surprising that he’s taken a liking to Tea Gardens. The Jabiru has been listed as endangered, not only in Australia, but worldwide. Once plentiful right along the east coast, their numbers have dramatically declined. They are now considered extinct throughout much of NSW. Wildlife authorities have been notified of the sighting and it does appear that the Jabiru has been tagged in the past.
REMEMBRANCE Day, November 11 2018, will be commemorated by the Stroud Community as 100 years since the Armistice of World War I, with a unique ceremony and dedication. This is a special day where people of all walks of life come to remember and pay their respects to those who served, and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
It is a time for everyone to remember the blood that has been shed, and the tears that flowed freely throughout the war. As a symbolic gesture, the people of Stroud are having a Service where a ‘tree blessing’ of a white magnolia will be planted and a plaque will be placed, which will read “For those who died and those who cried”.

Secretary of the Stroud Country Club, Joey Lyall, and her daughters Sage and Cassandra were the brains behind this not-to-be-missed event. Seals Swim Club Relaunch STROUD Seals is a small Swimming Club based in Stroud, but year round squad training takes place at Lakeside Leisure Centre, Raymond Terrace. While small, the Club has established itself as competitive Club which caters for swimmers who are competing at State level but also embraces those swimmers who are younger and still developing their skills. The Club is very fortunate to have Head Coach Michael Abel running and developing their swimming pathways and technical program. Seals Head Coach, Michael Abel is a licensed coach registered with ASCTA; he holds a Masters Degree in Coaching from Griffith University. Michael has over 30 years experience coaching swimmers from junior level through to competing on the National and world stage. He applies this extensive knowledge to developing technically comprehensive and detailed squad training programs, for groups and individuals. Michael has been involved with swimming at the coaching and parent level and fully understands the pressures of work, school, and family. His long term holistic approach enables him to manage training effectively to get the most out of the athletes so they can achieve their full potential as they develop their skills. He is always available to discuss his approach to coaching and his training programs with swimmers and parents. In order to expand and develop the range of coaching services within the club, Michael is developing junior coaches James Newall (21) and Tim Tatchell (19) who are both state/national level competitive swimmers. Tim Tatchell is working as a learn to swim teacher at Lakeside Leisure Centre and is developing his swimming coaching at Lakeside Leisure Centre. Tim also swims competitively and trains with Stroud Seals Swim Club. He is working hard developing a small business enterprise, training hard at his swimming to attain State Open times and undertaking a coaching qualification with Lakeside Leisure Centre. James Newall, is studying physiotherapy at Newcastle University, but is also a passionate and committed swimming coach. Having been a highly competitive swimmer himself, James thoroughly enjoys developing new swimmers and passing on his knowledge and experience. James is a Bronze level coach and works as a coach at Newcastle Forum at Newcastle University and has also coached at Lakeside Leisure Centre. In these Centres he has trained both high performance squads and development level squads. James, as part of his coaching development, is establishing a Junior Dolphins Program at Stroud Community Pool. The Junior Dolphins Program aims to bridge the gap between learn-to-swim and squad training. James hopes to attract young swimmers on Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons to Stroud. James can be contacted on email james@ awstructures.com.au Once a month, all three Coaches can be found at Stroud Community Pool, helping the Club to run and organise Swimming Club. o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of edit@mcnota.com.au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
I adore my newborn, but she won’t sleep and I am suffering from severe sleep deprivation. It means I’m having trouble doing anything fun during the day because I am too tired. Help! Mrs KF, Medowie commitment and vision, and these young Coaches under the guidance of Michael Abel are developing their potential and
developing young swimmers. Come and meet the Coaches on 18 November 2018 at 2pm at Swimming Club.
q Assistant Coach Tim Tatchell, Head Coach Michael Abel, Assistant Coach James Newall
Dear Mrs KF, SLEEP deprivation is horrendous whether it is from working night shifts, waiting up for wayward teenagers or looking after an elderly relative. A newborn takes it to a whole new level. The exhaustion can make you feel as though you are walking on air. Your brain doesn’t run on all cylinders and it can be hard to have the energy to find things as pleasurable as usual because you are just too fatigued. My advice would be to let normality fly out the window for a few months. Sleep when the baby sleeps, take up babysitting offers while you get some rest, accept meals and be a bit kind to yourself. Don’t try to be Wonder Woman because from memory she didn’t have a screaming baby, mastitis and vomit-stained clothes to contend with. That feeling of sinking into an exhausted stupor can take the shine off motherhood. I remember in those days feeling like I could give my babies to the highest bidder, or even the lowest bidder, in fact on some days I would have gratefully paid someone to take the darlings off my hands for a week. My daughter, an insomniac, almost broke me. At three am I’d say to my husband, ‘Take her away’ and to his credit he would walk our daughter around the neighbourhood or dance with her to Rage, which is probably why she now knows so many song lyrics. This too shall pass, Mrs KF. My children are now teenagers and would happily sleep until midday if I let them. Life is calm again, well it was, until I did something really stupid and bought a puppy. Carpe diem. Jasminda.

This contest lasted 26 ends despite some good bowling by Bev she lost to Bette Saillard a slightly more “seasoned” opponent. The score 151 v 119. Judi Polak and Francis Betar battled it out on Rink 9. The hot weather (plus Francis’s bowling) proved to be too strong for Judi, who conceded on the 18th end.
