Coral Trees gone to mulch By Margie TIERNEY THE removal of five Coral Trees from the Tea Gardens Foreshore has caused quite a stir. Social media exploded last week, and the News Of The Area phone and email ran hot as Council workmen cut down the trees that had lined Marine Drive for more than half a century. There were more than 90 concerned residents voicing their opinion, some for the removal, most against. Gordon Grainger, of the Marine Drive Reference Group told the News Of The Area, “The community is rightfully unhappy about

the removal of the trees, however it is important they understand and accept the facts leading up to this conclusion.” The fate of the trees was sealed back in 2014 when MidCoast Council resolved to remove the Corals after their root systems had been compromised during roadworks to upgrade the Marine Drive car park. Council arborist Josh Duncombe told the News Of the Area that the damage to the trees had been irreversible and there was a high risk the trees would fall in a storm. Mr Duncombe said, “Coral Trees have now been classified as a noxious weed

In our modern world, litigation is a reality,” said Mr Grainger. “We have defended the outcome as long as it was possible and have

insisted that suitable replacement trees are located,” he said. So far, two mature Port Jackson figs have been planted and the Marine Drive Reference group has sourced another five more mature figs from Tea Gardens Woodward Nursery. “In time it is expected that these figs will grow and become a central visual focus of the area, as well as providing shade for residents and tourists alike as they enjoy the foreshore,” said Josh Duncombe.

Emerging artists talents shown in HSC projects By Daniel SAHYOUN ANOTHER HSC milestone was reached last week when Year 12 Visual Arts students submitted their major projects for marking. The artworks showcased creative talents in a vast array of artist areas including painting, sculpture, photography and graphic design. Olivia Bartley, from Tea Gardens, created a photomedia project titled “Inconsolable” consisting of a series of three prints capturing a female face

in a milk bath. The Bulahdelah Central School student said she was inspired by the feminist views of Australian artist Del Kathryn Barton. “I particularly like the way she portrays female beauty,” Olivia said. “In my work, the murky unclear water of the milk bath and the use of make-up on the face represent a way of masking the insecurities of the female subject.” Olivia is pleased with the colour and clarity of her

finished work and said she would like to extend the theme further and capture more images. The popping candy-like colours used by contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami were the inspiration behind Charlie Brown’s sculpture titled “And Then X 2082, (Star Edition.)“ Speaking with News Of The Area, Charlie said her artwork took more than six months to complete. “I starting making the thousands of paper stars needed to complete my sculpture back in February,” she said. “The tiny stars all needed to be strung individually and assembled separately which took

eight weeks alone.” Charlie said the title of her sculpture reflects the 2082 stars used to create her work. Other artworks submitted include an oil pastel painting by Charlie Burns, graphic designs by Kyle Shultz and Noah Pholi-Harris, a collection of photographs and paintings by Bonnie Mirisch, Kant Richardson’s series of etchings and Luana White’s Multimedia paintings. The artworks were transported to a central marking centre last week and will contribute to 50 percent of the final HSC mark for the subject. Photoery Gall line On

Council seeks feedback on community satisfaction AS part of the NSW Government’s ‘Stronger Council’s’ framework for all newly merged councils, MidCoast Council is currently undertaking customer satisfaction surveys. The random telephone surveys will be conducted throughout September by National Field Services. “The surveys will only take about 10 minutes and we hope that those who are contacted by telephone will be happy to take part and help us improve our services,” said Council’s

Manager of Engagement and Communications, Jane Ree. The survey results will provide baseline information on community views on MidCoast Council’s performance and services. “This information will be a valuable tool for Council to better understand what matters to our community and to develop measures to improve services, focus communications, enhance community perceptions of council and build stronger relationships with our

community,” said Jane Ree. These results will serve as a benchmark for future research and analysis and the survey is intended to be

repeated late 2017. The project is a partnership between the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and the 19 newly merged councils.

Bushfire Ready By Margie TIERNEY BUSHFIRE season is almost upon us and to ensure we’re all prepared, the NSW Rural Fire Service is holding an Information day and BBQ in Tea Gardens this Saturday 10 September. It’s called the ‘’Get Ready Weekend” and members from the RFS will be on hand in the Coles Car Park from 9 am until 3 pm to answer questions on how best to prepare your home and yourselves for fire season.

The RFS says there are 5 simple steps to having a bushfire survival plan. First, trim overhanging trees and shrubs. Mow your lawn and remove all the cut grass. The RFS also recommends that you remove material that can burn around your home such as door mats, wood piles, mulch leaves and outdoor furniture. Clear and remove all debris and leaves from the gutters around your home. And finally the RFS suggests you prepare a hose

Shame on you Council OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, SOME might like the new view that has opened up on the Tea Gardens waterfront. But come summer it won’t be pleasant there if you take the family for a picnic . Unless ofcourse you want a rather communal experience with strangers on the intimate shelter tables. What utter incompetence on council’s part. That is even worse. Council decision makers who are supposedly wise

custodians of our open space don’t live here and are obviously way out of touch with reality. What makes it truly shameful though is the continual ignoring of our collective local knowledge, advice and our desires . Council, please explain why you have not removed the Coral Tree near the COOP. Surrounded by asphalt and enduring multiple roadworks over the years surely it is worse than those

other bonsaied tough specimens you have last week destroyed. What about the one near the library and children’s playground? That one is growing in better soil which causes tall growth and topheaviness and much greater vulnerability. An even worse sign of incompetence is the existence of the one (now two, maybe more ) right behind your very own Tea Gardens Office .

newsofthearea.com.au That bunch is spreading into the bush as they do when grown in such a location. Council when you are sitting in that office at meetings do you even know what you are looking out the window at? The waterfront ones were contained - the possibility of them becoming a weed was impossible, the ones next to your headquarters are spreading in front of your face . Council, apart from Coral trees did you not see nearly every species of tree fail at times during storms over the last several years? Why haven’t you removed all of those? We are the true owners

of the land, not the council. Why don’t we ignore council as it ignores us and make our own suitable plantings. A trial of several species might be required to see what grows in that exposed location which has salty poor backfill type soil. Hibiscus tiliaceus or Cottonwood is the name of the plant Philip Everett recently wrote about . It is salt tolerant growing throughout the coastal Pacific Rim including Australia. It is used widely on the Newcastle Foreshore as a street and park tree. It can be trained to do just the job required at Tea Gardens. It was in fact one of the

suggestions made by the Marine Drive Reference Group. Whatever is planted, it is going to take years for anything to grow in that location. Therefore if you are young couple just about to start a family, think about summer picnics with your grandchildren not your children . Council you don’t know appear to know what you are doing regarding the management of our foreshores and you should be ashamed. Christian Patteson (Horticulturalist) Hawks Nest

Kore Farm walk OPINION

Dear News Of The Area, IT is my opinion that you can always pick those who had a dangerous and adventurous childhood by the way they tackle the crossing of a creek bed. There are those who head straight across with confidence in the knowledge that they will not slip, heads up they stride out looking at their destination and not their feet. “No problem, it’s easy” they say from their safe vantage point quickly arrived at on the other side. Then there are the others, heads down testing every footfall and usually choosing the wrong one, they totter and slip precariously from stone to stone until arriving, sometimes unscathed but usually with wet feet, at the other side. Similar can be said for walking across cattle grids, but maybe that also has something to do with the size of your boots.

So goes our walk to Kore Farm last week. An exceptional early spring day and the opportunity to sample and purchase some wonderful local produce brought out a good contingent of enthusiastic walkers. Apart from the tiny challenge above it’s a scenic, easy walk in. Helmut and Emma welcomed us with a lovely morning tea and the opportunity to refresh before our tour of the farm. Helmut is a goldmine of information and knowledge as we walk around and generous in his sharing of same. Swarming bees, horses, dogs, geese and chickens share the property with a wide variety of citrus, berries and other fruit trees. Thank you Helmut and Emma for the wonderful hospitality shown to The Thursday Walkers on their visit last week. I might add that a hamper of Kore Farm’s beautiful products make for wonderful and welcome gift. Helen Watkins Thursday Walkers Group

Bulahdelah welcomes new Scout Leader By Daniel SAHYOUN

THE Cub Scouts program in Bulahdelah has expanded with the recent addition of a Scouts group catering for older children up to the age of 15. New Scout leader Colin Griffiths has stepped forward to take on the group and said he is looking forward to the challenges. “I hope to get the kids out into the environment and teach them to be more confident in themselves,” Mr Griffiths said.

“It is all about having fun while learning new skills for life.” Mr Griffiths said he was planning many outdoor activities in addition to preparing the Scouts for the next Jamboree which will be held in Adelaide. The new leader has had a long association with the Scouting organisation beginning with his involvement in Cub Scouts during his youth in Cabramatta. He has also had many years’ experience as a Scout

Leader. The Bulahdelah group currently has more than a dozen members involved in the Cubs and Scouts programs and Mr Griffith said he hopes that membership will continue grow. “With only a Cubs program previously running for younger children, the addition of the Scouts group now means we are able to cater for older kids as well as younger ones,” he said. “I’ve been networking with other Scout groups in the district and we hope to

have more members by the end of the year, we have a lot of work to do but I’m up to the challenge.” Mr Griffith joins Cub Leaders David and Teresa Mort, Andrew Garemyn and Nicky Hammerl who ensure the Cubs and Scouts have a lot of fun with plenty of adventures and new experiences. Enquiries regarding Bulahdelah Cubs and Scouts can be made at the Scout Hall in Stroud Street on Monday nights between 6-7.30pm. By Daniel SAHYOUN

WATT’S In Vogue closed its doors last week after serving the Bulahdelah community for almost a decade. The final day of trading was celebrated with wine and nibbles which were shared with staff, community members and visitors to the store. Owner Kim Dorney said she made the decision to close up shop to pursue other interests. “It’s not a matter of having had enough, it’s just that I wanted a change, my kids have all grown up and left home and my husband wants to travel,” Mrs Dorney said.

q SCOUTS: Connor Baker, Reefe Mirisch, Jayden Watling with Bulahdelah Scout Leader Colin Griffiths.

“We’ve also wanted to go to horse shows on Saturdays, but that hasn’t been possible as the shop has taken priority.” Mrs Dorney’s business has been a large part of the community and she said there are many things about the shop that she will miss. “I will definitely miss the friendships that I’ve made and just being here and servicing the community,” she said. “I’ll also miss the Melbourne Cup Fashion Parades and all the fundraising that we have done.” Some of the many fundraising events that

Watt’s In Vogue has been involved in include the Girl’s Night In which raised more than $7,000 and fundraisers for the Preschool and Mark Hughes. Although the business is closing, Mrs Dorney told News Of The Area she won’t be going anywhere soon. “In my spare time, instead of the shop, there are some renovations and gardening I need to do around my home,”Mrs Dorney said. “I would like to thank all my valued customers who have come into the shop over the years, and for all the warm comments that they have given us.”

q Club Champion Richard Lee representing Tea Gardens in the Newcastle District Champion of Champions competition. Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 31 AUGUST: After a washout last Wednesday, devotees of the weekly Nominated

respectability in the score with the team of; Peter (Defttouch) Gurney, Bob Weir and Bill Whalan taking the money on +30. In second place on +29 were; Barry Drayton, Scott Beaumont and Ron Webster. The real applause of the day was reserved for the “Lucky Losers”; Neil Kibble, Col Amos and Dave Rimmer. 2 September: With rain just about all around, I did not expect the Friday Jackpot Open Pairs to be played. Fifteen players felt otherwise and the managed to complete their 20 ends before the rain set in. The lowest winning margin was selected to determine the winner and Jeff Baker and Vic Garlick managed to do that taking the money. There were no lady bowlers present today. Perhaps the threat of rain put them off. The Jackpot was not won. 3 September: In other news, Club Champion,

Hawks Defeated in a Thriller LEAGUE

By Neil REYNOLDS Tea Gardens Hawks TEA Gardens Hawks were beaten in the preliminary final, played at Kurri Sports Ground on Saturday. In a thrilling finish, the Hawks came back from a 22 point to 6 deficit against the Windale Eagles. With fifteen minutes remaining, the Hawks levelled with two tries to Jake Geraghty, and one to Brooke Roach. In a reversal of the 2015 final, which the Hawks won by a field goal point, the Eagles reciprocated in the final minutes, to advance to the Grand Final. In a disrupted preparation, John Schultz, Cjay Misifosa, Regan Hunter, and Brendon Muxlow where all under injury clouds throughout the week. All withdrew on game day. The return of Luke Handsaker, Allan Fepulai, and Jason Purdon was timely. The Hawks opened the scoring with a converted try to Allan Fepulai. They contained the Eagles

against a very strong wind for most of the first half. Two quick tries 10 minutes before, and then 10 minutes after half time gave the Eagles a comfortable lead. With the game looking out of reach for the Hawks, Luke Handsaker led a recovery that almost got them over the line. Best for the Hawks was Jake Geraghty. His work in attack and defence was exceptional. Allan Fepulai was strong up front, and Brooke Roach was inspirational. Carl Williams’ work on the wing was tradesman like. A replay of the game, along with all the semi-final series can be seen on U tube via Bar TV dubbed “TopBetta Monday night football”. All grand finals will be streamed live on Saturday. The “A Grade game between Shortland and Windale will kick off at 4pm. The “Hawks Nest Golf Club” Lady Hawks were defeated by Newcastle University, in the final on Saturday. In a strong first half performance, the girls led the more fancied rivals by six points to 4. Unable to contend against the strong wind in the second half

In a nail biting finish Myall River ran out winners against East Maitland by 22 points to 20. Congratulations to the team and their management for their efforts in 2016. The “Tea Gardens Masonic Centre” 11’s were defeated by Windale at Malabulla Sports Complex in an earlier game on Saturday. The loss put them out of the finals race. 12 MYALL COAST NEWS OF THE AREA

AS the 2016/2017 approaches the cricket club is calling on players to register for the upcoming season. Registration days for juniors and seniors are at: TEA GARDENS OVAL SATURDAY 10th & 17th September between 9.30am and 11.30am. KARUAH R.S.L. CLUB on SATURDAY 17th September between 10am and 12pm. Once numbers are established it is anticipated that training for all grades will start in late September, with the seasons for juniors and seniors kicking off in early October. The times and dates will be known later in the month. The club cater for MILO

cricket, first year cricketers from 5 years to 12 years. This is a coaching mentoring year within the club locally played at Karuah each week starting in later October. It is subject to sufficient numbers and as the season gets closer the club will have a better idea if the program proceeds this season. It costs $50.00 for the year and kids receive a MILO kit bag to use each week. The club cater for juniors from Under 10’s to Under 16’s and it is anticipated that we will field Under 10, 13, 14 and 15 sides this year in the Maitland District Junior Association. Boys and girls play together in the teams, with girls being able to play 2 years below their age bracket. New players receive a club playing shirt and choice

of cap or broad brim hat. Insurances are covered in the registration through Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia. The club cater for seniors in two divisions in the Dungog District Association. You must be 12 years or older to play in the senior competition, male and female. Equipment is also supplied and the registration fee is $100.00. Insurances are the same as the juniors and new players will receive a shirt and cap or broadbrim as part of the registration. The club will need coaches and helpers, so have a think, the more that get in the less there is for those to do. It doesn’t take to much time and the committee are experienced in running this club, so advice is only a question away. At this stage coach numbers are good but if junior numbers grow the club might need a couple more.

Karuah Men’s Bowling Club By Trevor DAVIES WHILE Karuah’s very consistent ladies are tied up playing their “consistency singles” this month, the men are now engaged in playing in the District 3 bowls triples competition, known as the 3 X 3’s. Karuah Men have two squads this year with a team in Grade 2 and another in Grade 3. The 3 x 3’s competitions are played on Wednesday afternoons by 3 teams of 3 players in each squad with each player playing 3 bowls per end. In the first round played on the 31 August the Karuah Grade 2 team had a comfortable Squad win (each team score contributes to the overall squad result). The Grade 3 team were away at Teralba and on an unfamiliar matting surface, in intermittent wind and rainy

team managed to hold onto and increase despite some impressive bowling from Olive’s team. After the 16th end the winning margin was 11 but Olive’s team sent down some great shots scoring 7 points for the last two ends. The final score Anne Mackenzie’s team 20 defeating Olive McKeown’s team 16. Thanks Vicki Rankin for umpiring and Karen Green for being the controlling body. Social bowls winners were Kerry Faber, Dorothy Thompson, Karen Green and Maynie Roberts for a win plus ends. Everyone joined in to wish Maynie Roberts happy birthday and congratulations for her 58th wedding anniversary.

squalls were defeated by the home squad by 1 shot over 54 ends. In a 2 loss knockout format, they have 1 more chance and will play again on Wednesday the 7September at home. Being a member of a team and a squad is one of the joys of lawn bowls! While our game isn’t as physical as that played by our Karuah Kangaroos Rugby League Team (Go The Roos), we flatter ourselves that team play and mateship, knowing your role in the team and doing your best for your side and club is just the same. We reckon that our sport is just as enjoyable as we remember competition being back in our earlier, fitter sporting days.

The good weather breaks and arrival of Spring has allowed social and training days to continue and even though fun and social, competition winners do come away with a few dollars as well as bragging rites. Karuah’s great grass green is bearing up to the traffic magnificently and playing extremely well. If you want to see great comp bowls, come down to the club on Wednesday afternoons and watch the 3 x 3s from the comfort of the veranda. If you would like to play or an intro to the game and some free instruction, drop by Tuesday or Thursday mornings, or for free breakfast and a game Sunday mornings. See you at Karuah.

q Bragging rites and pocket money go to Peter Cairnes and Dave Benson winners of last Thursdays social comp.
