Big Year Ahead By Margie TIERNEY

Stephen Dungay is the 2017 Deputy Prime Minister. “I’m looking forward to going on our excursion to Bathurst and performing in the Myall River Festival again.” “I can’t wait, this year is going to be excellent,” Stephen said. Sport plays a big part in Sophie Frazer’s life. “I’m looking forward to improving my running and representing the school in athletics and working hard throughout the year.” “I want to learn more, have fun and get to know the new Kindy [kids] and play with them,” said Kiera Bentley-Baker. Principal Mark Clemson says the buddy system is an important relationship to both Year 6 students and Kindy kids.

THERE’S plenty to be excited about if you’re a Year 6 student at Tea Gardens Primary School. “I love that I’m back at school and I’m looking forward to learning lots of different things,’’ Breanna Foran said. Year 6 pupils have started their last year of Primary with lots of projects and plenty to do as they prepare for High School. “I want to learn more about Maths this year and I am also really looking forward to being the elected Minister for the Environment and caring for our school garden,” Braiven Megallon said. Year 6 is bit like Government with many students taking on a parliamentary role.

The offending driver was later identified from his number plate, which had fallen off as a result of the impact, and was issued two fines for the offence. AROUND the world, it’s estimated more than 600 million adults play Chess on a regular basis. Now we can add a few younger players to the count. The students of Karuah Primary School now have a giant chess set in their playground. ‘’A few of our senior students had expressed interest in playing chess last year and asked would they be able to have a giant set for the playground,”

Teacher Kath Henry told News Of The Area. “Finally, after a very successful ‘Grandparents Day’, the funds were found, with a big thank you to Miss Blatch.” Year 5/6 Teacher Heath Lawless takes the lead when it comes to passing on his Chess skills and advice. Then the older students do so in kind, teaching the younger ones. ‘’We have two playtimes every day,’’ Kath said.

The Calendar is already busy for the 171 students at Tea Gardens Primary with their swimming carnival this week and a visit from the Newcastle Knights and NRL. “The National Rugby League assembly visit will focus on two main values that promote a respectful and successful team,” Principal Clemson said. “Belonging and celebrating differences.”

The Hague Convention on International Child Abduction is the main international agreement covering international parental child abduction. Not all countries are signatories to the convention. For those that are, it sets out an orderly process enabling a parent to have their child returned to the country in which they were habitually resident so that the courts of that home country can have their laws determine any dispute between parents as to parenting arrangements. Hague Convention cases are a specialist area of Family and Relationships Law and our experienced Family Lawyers can provide urgent advice to parents affected by allegations of international child abduction.

DESPITE a few first day nerves and worry about getting lost in a maze of classrooms, Year 7 students at Bulahdelah Central School quickly settled into their new learning environment last week. The 50 students beginning their high school journey together were full of smiles as they got to know each other, met their teachers and began their lessons. Ryver Fitzgerald from Tea Gardens said he enjoyed his first week of high school. “I was a little nervous about starting, but once I got here it was fine, I realised there was nothing to worry about,” he said. “It’s easy to find your way around and I’ve already made some new friends.” Fellow classmate Zoe Egginton from Karuah said she had “no worries at all” about commencing her secondary schooling. “If anything, I was excited about starting,

it’s so different to primary school so it’s been a nice change,” she said. The new students were all excited about the subjects they will be studying including

25 years of bass bashing By Daniel SAHYOUN THE Bulahdelah Bass Bash returns to the Myall River this weekend for the 25th Anniversary of the popular catch and release fishing competition. With prizes up for grabs for reeling in the biggest bass and other species, as well as the mightiest mullet and Top Line Roofing Eel Classic for juniors, there will be plenty to keep anglers of all ages busy. Bulahdelah Fishing Club President Darren Carrall said a new category for carp had been added to this year’s program. “There had been no carp caught in the Myall River until late last year when one was reeled in, and fairly recently two more were caught in quick succession,” Darren said. “We’ve put a bounty on carp this year to target them to see if we can find anymore.” Darren said anyone who catches a carp during the competition will receive a prize. The competition boundaries stretch along the Myall and Crawford River systems down to Bombah Point Ferry so there will be plenty of vantage points for both novice and serious anglers. Darren told New Of The Area the water quality was looking good for the weekend event. “The river’s a lot saltier

than usual but it won’t affect the fishing in any way,” he said. “There’s been a bit of rainfall, however the water is decent and pretty clear.” The weekend kicks off with the famous Bass Bash Ball at Bulahdelah Bowling

PRIORITIES for 2017 was the topic of discussion at Bulahdelah Lions Club’s first official meeting for the year. Held last week, District Governor Rosalee Sellers joined more than 30 Lions members for the meeting which included a dinner at

Club at 8pm on Friday night with live music from the band ‘Siren’ ensuring a rocking good time. The event will conclude with a presentation at the Bowling Club at 1pm on Sunday. For those wishing to be

Bulahdelah Bowling Club. Mrs Sellers told News Of The Area she will be overseeing the projects the District’s 62 Lions Clubs, 10 Lioness Clubs and four Leos Clubs will be carrying out. “Clubs will also be heavily involved in preparing for the midyear Lions Centenary,” she said.

The fishing club encourages everyone to grab their reels and tackle boxes, bring the family and enjoy the weekend. For more information contact Darren Carrall on 0419996930 or Brett Shultz at 0418664531.

“The official Centenary Day is Wednesday 7 June and we’re encouraging all clubs to do something to celebrate in their communities on that day.” Discussions throughout the evening compared new projects with the challenges of climbing a mountain, where small persistent steps are required to achieve the overall goal. Club President Roger Dixon said their major focus of the year would be the Community Activities Park to be constructed in the Mountain Park area.

q Bass Bash: Bulahdelah Fishing Club President Darren Carrall.

“We have more than $50,000 for it so far and we’re hoping to get up to the $200,000 mark to be able to build a decent skate park,” Mr Dixon said. “The project will include a road system for the younger generation to learn about road rules, exercise equipment for mature aged people and a skateboard park.” Mr Dixon said club members will also continue working on upgrading Lions Park on the southern banks of the Myall River. “We will be making

improvements so both locals and tourists can use the park at any time of the year,” he said. The projects will be supported by many fundraising activities throughout the year including operating the Browns Flat Driver Reviver site during holiday periods and catering for various events. The Lions Club meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.00pm at Bulahdelah Bowling Club. New members are always welcome to join.

q Allan Freihaut said closing the HCCU Agency will impact on local businesses.

Locals short changed businesses are now forced to look at other financial institutions which can better meet their banking requirements,” Mr Freihaut said. HCCU recently informed its members via a letter that the Bulahdelah Agency will cease operations on 28 February and that transactions could be made through the Bank@Post service at the same location once the agency closed. This prompted many responses on the Bulahdelah Community Facebook page with one member commenting, “We lost our hospital now the HCCU, what’s next?” Another posted, “Not good news for those who can’t make it out of town.” HCCU Executive Retail Manager Earl Emerson said the amount of business generated through the Agency no longer justified its

operational overheads. “Particularly in light of the improved and more economical transactional service now being provided by the Australia Post Bank@ Post service,” he said. “Members who have more complex financial product requirements will continue to receive the same flexible, home or work-based service we currently provide via our Mobile Lenders and Financial Planning partner – Bridges.” Mr Emerson said all other general financial product requirements would continue to be met by the locally-based product specialists within the Tea Gardens branch. The Post Office Agency began operating three years ago, following the closure of HCCU’s Bulahdelah Branch at the Rural Transaction Centre.

Tea Cup Club By Margie TIERNEY

IF you love to create, enjoy a chat and a cuppa, then why not join the Tea Cup Club. The Club is the brainchild of Jenifer Gimbert of Black Possum Fabric and Beads in Tea Gardens. “You come along, you get a project every month, we teach different stitches, then you have a high tea, and sit from 2 till 4 and do your project,” Jenifer said. “It might be a thread catcher, needle keeper, or a wall hanging,” Jenifer told

News Of The Area. “They might frame it to put on the wall, or make different baskets, it’s a set project every month.” The Black Possum Fabric shop is now home to four generations of Gimberts. Hazel Gimbert, who has lived in Tea Gardens for 64 years, still helps out daughter-in-law Jenifer. Then there’s Jenifer’s daughter Haylie, and her daughter Harper May who, at 10 weeks of age, is just content to visit at the moment. The Gimbert women

have been running their Tea Gardens business for more than 30 years. But they’ve also moved with the times, now selling online from their stock of thousands of fabrics. “We have lots of sit and sew days, when people can come in for the day and sew and we just help them with whatever project they’re doing.’’ ‘The art of sewing is far from dying it’s still very popular.’’ So if you’d like to join the Tea Cup Club, head to Black Possum on Myall Street, on Thursday 23 February for the Club’s first meeting of the year.

Holiday Bonanza

Gonski Cuts

By Margie TIERNEY

WITH the kids back at school and most people back at work, it’s time to reflect on the recent summer holiday season and its impact on local businesses in the Myall. Locals know full well that the towns of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest were buzzing over the Christmas period. And this is why. “At our peak we worked out we had around 1,800 people in here,” Tracey Moore told News Of The Area. Tracey and her husband Ken manage the North Coast Holiday Park in Hawks Nest. “This Christmas, people were a lot happier, the weather was a major factor.” “We didn’t have any problems with rain, like last year when we were washed out, it was quite devastating,” Tracey said. And the tourists just kept on coming with around 900 visitors booked into the Park over the Australia Day long weekend. Tracey and her staff provide each guest with an information pack promoting other local businesses in the area. “I’ve got menus in there, what restaurants there are, what clothes shops, ferry timetables, tide charts, everything in the local area just to let them know what

q North Coast Holiday Park: Tracey Moore and Marissa Schutz. they can do and where they can go.” “It’s so important we keep the money in this town,” Tracey said. The report card from First National Real Estate at Hawks Nest was also very positive. They manage over a hundred holiday properties. “It was a really good season, Property Manager, Meredith Verhagen said. “The first two weeks

News Of The Area

of the holiday season over Christmas were fully booked.” Kylie French from Tea Gardens Real Estate echoed the same reaction to the season in regards to their 130 holiday properties. “It’s been a great holiday period, we had many returns from previous years and plenty of return bookings for next year.” ‘’We’ll continue to be busy till after Easter,” Kylie said.

MEMBER for Paterson Meryl Swanson has written to all schools in her electorate this week asking principals and teachers what the effects of “Gonski” cuts will meant to them. The Paterson electorate will lose $43million in Gonski funding as part of the Turnbull Government’s $30billion cut from schools over 10 years. Labor is fighting these cuts and insisting the Government deliver the full Gonski rollout. “I have no doubt the impact of these cuts will be severe, but I want to hear directly from schools what the

cuts will mean for them,” Ms Swanson said. “I know several schools have used their Gonski funding for intervention programs that have led to great improvements in literacy and numeracy. “One school told me they are meeting and exceeding local and state standards because of these programs. “Properly funding our schools is critical to making sure our young people have the skills they need to put their best foot forward, to get a job, keep a job, and become our future leaders. “As our international neighbours place ever more importance on education we need to give our children the skills and the technology

they need to excel.” Gonski funding was designed to direct additional resources to areas of disadvantage to make up for historical underfunding, Ms Swanson said. After building slowly from 2014 to 2017, it was supposed to sharply increase in 2018-19. “But the Turnbull Government has put an end to that. I will not stand by while funds are cut from schools. I’m asking our schools to help me build the case for the full Gonski rollout. “I have invited teachers and parents to share with me what Gonski funding has meant for them and, importantly, what they will miss out on because of the cuts.”

IN a surprise decision, Robyn Jenkins has resigned from her position on the MidCoast Council Local Representative Committee. The former Deputy Mayor believes “it is not ethical” for her to accept an annual payment of around $19,000 for the work required of her on the LRC. Ms Jenkins said she’d become increasingly

disillusioned by the role of the LRC, citing as an example the proposed MidCoast Council Water merger. “The LRC knew nothing about MidCoast Water, nothing, until we read it in the paper.” “We knew when the community did,” Ms Jenkins said. Her decision last week came as speculation grew that newly elected NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian

was considering a possible backflip on council amalgamations. “I don’t pretend for a second the issue is not complex, some might even call it messy.’’ ”Our government is here to fix it,” Premier Berejiklian said. At this stage, the State Government has merged 20 councils, with 11 including Port Stephens Council still in line for amalgamation.

By Margie TIERNEY LOCALS wanting an update in regards to the massive Riverside development planned for Tea Gardens are being urged to attend the next meeting of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association. Representatives from Sheargold Property Developers, the new owners of the site, will address the meeting. The company recently submitted their latest concept plans for the Riverside project to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment. “We have been working closely with MidCoast Council, as well as the State Environmental and Planning Agencies to ensure we strike the right balance between supporting local economic growth, maintaining the area’s natural charm and providing much needed housing supply,” Managing Director Michael Sheargold said. “You only get one chance in the life of a project to make sure the design and planning is right and that time is now,” he said. On the drawing board are plans for approximately

800 dwellings and a retail/ commercial centre. The site is bounded by Myall Street to the west and the Myall River to the east. Completion date is scheduled for 2035. Mr Sheargold added, “We look forward to working with the local community in delivering this very exciting project”. More information on the Modified Concept Plan can be found on the Department of Planning and Environments major projects website. The next meeting of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association is being held in the old library at the Hawks Nest Community Centre at 7pm on Monday 13 February.

Dear Jasminda, I have been single for some time, in fact, my family has probably lost all hope for me. Whilst I thoroughly enjoyed my independent, please-myself lifestyle, I have opened my heart to the possibility of love and have been seeing a man for a couple of months and feel I should introduce him to my family but am very nervous about the daunting task of unleashing my family upon a very shy man. Miss EB, Corlette

Dear Miss EB, What are we working with here? A Brady sort of bunch or a Focker sort of family? I’m sensing, between the lines, that it is probably the latter. It is natural to feel nervous, EB. You’ve swiped right, put your best foot forward, felt the first flicker of love and all that hard work could come undone. Ease your new man into the fold one family member at a time. Start with the most impressive ones and work your way down the list. When you say “unleash”, I gather that there may be a Hannibal Lecter-type in the old gene pool. Leave Uncle Mac until the end-of-year dress-up party when gimp masks are somehow more socially acceptable. Or just tell your new man you are an orphan. He sounds like a keeper. Carpe Diem, Jasminda.

Bushfires can flare up at any time of the year, but are more prone in the warmer months of the year from October to April. Alert levels play an important part of the NSW Rural Fire Service’s education and awareness campaign. It advertises and promotes these levels on its website, on the radio

and in the ‘Fires Near Me’ app and residents need to keep track of the alert levels so that they know what to do in the event of a fire. The alert levels are: ADVICE: A fire has started.
There is no immediate danger. Stay up to date in case
the situation changes. WATCH AND ACT: There is a heightened level of threat. Conditions are changing and you need to start taking action to protect you and your family. EMERGENCY

WARNING: An Emergency Warning is the highest level of bushfire alert. You may be in danger and need to take action immediately. Any delay now puts your life at risk. Before a fire even starts, monitor the Fire Danger Ratings daily at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fdr. There are six fire danger ratings ranging from Low-Moderate to Catastrophic “The higher the fire danger rating, the more dangerous a fire is likely to be. Under catastrophic conditions leaving early

is the only safe option,” a spokesman for the RFS said. “When it’s Severe you should only stay if your home is well prepared and you’re ready to defend it.
“At Extreme, only stay if your home is prepared to the very highest level and is specially built to survive a bushfire.
“Catastrophic is as bad as it gets – no homes are built to withstand a fire in these conditions. Leaving early is your only safe option.”

Junior League Call Out LEAGUE

Myall River Junior League By Neil REYNOLDS

THE Myall River Junior League has planned an expression of interest evening at Myall Park. Club representatives will be at the ground between 5 and 6pm on Tuesday February 14, to receive expressions of interest from current and new players who are looking to play League in 2017. Names will be taken for all age groups from six and under through to 17 years of age. The number of teams and age groups will be dependent on player numbers in each division. Official training is planned to start on February 21. A sausage sizzle is

being arranged for players expressing interest. The Club is also asking for expressions of interest from people to take on roles as trainers, managers, and coaching. Recent initiatives by the Rugby League’s governing body require a high level of compliance in supporting Junior League players, which require support staff to undertake training courses, which are available over the next couple of months. Official competition will kick off on April 1, and the Club is planning trials from mid-March To contact the Club phone 0417 226619 or email Neil Reynolds on: nreynolds.2@ bigpond.com

BOWLING Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA 1 February The new month brought with it some early welcome relief from the heat. The 50 bowlers that played the usual Wednesday Fours format enjoyed overcast, but still, humid weather to contest their matches over 21 ends. As sometimes happens with nominated teams, the winners were far superior to their opposition and I am told that the team of Col Farrugia Brian Emmett, Peter Gurney and Bill Whalan, won by “a large margin”. Enough said! The runners-up was a triples combination of Brian Newbury, Ron Green and Leigh Hunt. Lucky losers were Graham Watkins, Bill Bridges and Barry Drayton. 3 February Friday Jackpot Open

Pairs was played today with 16 bowlers participating in overcast conditions, but with a light breeze. A welcome was extended to David Perry who was visiting from Rydalmere. The formula used to determine the winners was 4 points for a win plus ends won. This suited the winners Lon Richards and Bill Whalan. They accumulated +16. The Lucky Losers were Stewart Sturrock and Max Stephens. The jackpot was not won and will stand at $80.00 for next week. 5 February Extreme heat put paid to any Sunday bowls being played today. In other news The Mid-Week and Saturday Pennant season is almost upon us. Mid-Week Pennants will commence on Wednesday 22 February with the Tea Gardens Grade 4 side playing

at home against Carrington. The Saturday Pennant competition will commence on 4 March with the Tea Gardens Grade 3 side at home to Cardiff. The Grade 5 side will play away at Lemon Tree Passage and Grade 6 will also play away against Hamilton North.

Bowling Off the Richter BOWLING Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lynda RICHARDS TUESDAY 31 January: Once again hot weather conditions triumphed over bowls. Three games for Round One of the Club Championship Singles Competition were to be played. The winner in this singles competition is the bowler

who reaches the score of 25 shots first, regardless of ends played. A decision was made to commence play at 8am based on predicted temperatures for Tuesday. Unfortunately by 9am, the temperature had reached 37 degrees Celsius. Well off the “Richter Scale” for allowing bowls to be played. Most teams had completed 7 ends at this

stage. Play was rescheduled to resume on Thursday 2 February. There was no social bowls played. Happy birthday greetings to Bev Dunn. Thursday 2nd February: Round One of the major Singles Competition resumes plus three other games that were scheduled for this date. Two players forfeited meaning their opponents will proceed to Round Two of the competition. Once again play commenced at 8am in an endeavour to beat the hot

There are 18 teams entered in Grade 3 divided into 3 sections this year. Grade 5 will be contested with 30 teams competing in 5 sections and in Grade 6, there are 39 teams entered divided into 7 sections. Wow! All Grades will be assured of some heavy completion.

weather. On Rink 1 Sheril Johnson and Lynda Richards were “neck to neck” most of the game but Sheril claimed victory on the 29th end, 25 v 23. Rink 2, after 19 ends Maynie Roberts defeated Pam Gilchrist 25 v 8. Kayelene Pearson and Karen Green played 21 ends on Rink 3. The final score here was Kayelene 26 and Karen 13. A mammoth game of 31 ends was played on Rink 4 between Kathie Rimmer and Francis Betar. Francis just “kept hanging in there” but Kathie finally out bowled her, winning the

The Selectors have arranged some trial games for Grade 5 and Grade 6 next Saturday 11 February. Grade 5 can test their skills against a team from Dungog at Tea Gardens and Grade 6 will play a team from Karuah at Karuah. All players, both those

preliminary selected, plus reserves should make arrangements to attend. More entries are needed for the Club Minor Singles Championship commencing on Saturday 18 February.

game 25 v 16. Another close competition on Rink 5, 22 ends played Robyn Beaumont 25 defeating Loretta baker 22. Finally Rink 6 great bowling from Lorraine Harvey and Lynne Green. Lorraine managed to increase her lead of 1 on the 13th end to 8 shots on the 19th end. By the 22nd end Lynne was only down by 2 shots. Lorraine then managed to score 5 shots in the next 3 ends. The final outcome Lorraine 25 v Lynne 19. Great bowling by all

participants. Congratulations to the winners and condolences to the losers. A big thank you to all the Markers, Umpire Vicki Rankin and Controlling Body Nola Jackson. Despite the hot weather conditions there was still a few spectators/supporters present, which is great to see. No social bowls were played. Watch this spot for results of Round 2 of the Club Major Singles Competition that will be held on Tuesday 7 February. Weather permitting.
