q Six-year-old Kirra-Lea Rooney will be donating her ponytail to help sick kids.

FOR many young girls, long hair and ponytails are a dream come true, with great courage often needed for the long locks to be cut. But for six-year-old Kirra-Lea Rooney, making the decision to have her ponytail chopped off to help young cancer patients was an easy one to make. The Bulahdelah youngster said she instantly decided to donate her hair after visiting people in hospital with her mother. CONTINUED Page 4

This is nothing but unfair and undemocratic costshifting.” Although Premier Berejiklian recently called off regional Council mergers that had not yet been gazetted, Ms Washington said the policy, backed “all the way” by the new Premier, had been “a dog’s breakfast from beginning to end”. It has been widely

reported that the forced council amalgamations, along with the failed greyhound ban, contributed to the government’s popularity plummeting under the leadership of former Premier Mike Baird. But with Premier Berejiklian now at the helm, Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead said the change of leadership gives the government the opportunity to “refresh and refocus.”

“There was a message that came to us about the greyhound industry, there was a perception that we are not listening or understanding what the communities’ concerns are, or what their wants are,” he said. “This is an opportunity for us to get out as much as we can and talk to the community, listen to their concerns and act on them.” Ms Washington said whilst the government is trying to reframe itself with a new Premier, there

MELANOMA survivor Jay Allen has begun his marathon walk from Brisbane to Sydney. The 40-year-old hit the road last Sunday, at the start of a 12 hundred kilometre journey over the next month. The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Community has been busy behind the scenes helping Jay to reach his target of $250,000 for Melanoma research. Mumm’s Restaurant is holding a fundraising dinner for Jay and his support crew on the night he arrives in Tea Gardens on Thursday 23 March. Here’s a taste of the mouth-watering menu. For Entree there’s a choice of four dishes including, salt and pepper squid with capsicum jam, mixed quinoa salad with beets, broccolini, feta, pumpkin and toasted seeds (GF) and house made duck spring rolls with a spicy dipping sauce (DF). Of the five mains there’s fried barramundi or marinated lamb rump

with creamy mash and seasonal vegetables just to name a couple of delicious options. And who doesn’t like something sweet. Chocolate, raspberry, pistachio and frangelico semifreddo with a dollop cream. Lemon and lime tart garnished with berry coulis and soft cream Sticky date pudding smothered in rich butterscotch sauce served with cream and ice cream. There’ll also be a free glass of sparkling wine on arrival courtesy of Tyrells. Cost per person is $50. Community organisations are being urged to book a group table. To Book call Mumm’s on 4997 1162. You can also join Jay on his walk. You can do a few hundred metres or a leg of 20 kilometres or more. He’s due to arrive in Bulahdelah on 22 March, Tea Gardens on 23 March, and Medowie on 24 March.

All About The Buzz

A BUZZING hive of activity surrounded a group of local bee enthusiasts who attended a field day recently held in Bulahdelah. The group gathered at the home of local beekeeper Gary Haynes to learn about commercial methods of extracting honey through a range of practical demonstrations and hands-on experience. Club members assisted with all steps of the process including moving the frames from the beehives to a conveyor for decapping, which removed the wax and exposed the honeycomb. An industrial spinner was then used to rotate the frames at speed, allowing the sweet, sticky honey to be extracted, filtered and collected for

use. Mr Haynes said the field day was an extension of the previous gathering held at the Men’s Shed, where the honey was extracted manually. “This was a more in-depth experience and allowed everyone to see the honey being extracted in an industrial environment,” he said. “Commercial beekeepers can run over 1,000 hives, so you certainly appreciate the volume of honey that’s being extracted.” The Bee Club is run in conjunction with Bulahdelah Men’s Shed, who contribute by building the bee frames and getting involved in other aspects of the club. Some of the honey produced locally is sold through the Bulahdelah Visitors Information Centre.

Mr Haynes said the recent blast of hot weather has not affected the quality of the local honey. “It hasn’t had much of an impact on honey production or the ground flora at this stage,” he said. “But long periods of hot weather with little moisture can dry out the plants and trees, so we could be in for hard time next season.” New members of all ages are always welcome to join the Bee Club. “There is a lot to learn about beekeeping, it’s hard work, but definitely worth it in the end,” Mr Haynes said.

In assessing the primary purpose of the websites, the Court looked at the principal activity of the website and the principal intention of its users. The Federal Court was satisfied that the primary purpose of the websites was copyright infringement. In relation to The Pirate Bay the Court said the facilitation of copyright was a “blatant and wilful disregard for the rights of copyright owners”. Similar findings were made in relation to the other websites. As such, the Court ruled that ISPs must take reasonable steps to stop customers accessing these file-sharing websites. The decision marks the first time that site blocking laws introduced in 2015 have been successfully used in Australia.

Crazy Dave Honoured

q Broadcast Award finalist Crazy Dave in the studio at Great Lakes FM. Photo: Supplied By Daniel SAHYOUN MARKWELL’S Dave Saul has been named as a finalist in the prestigious Southern Community Media X Awards, which recognise excellence in community broadcasting. Mr Saul, who is known as Crazy Dave, has been honoured in the ‘Best Interview’ category for his segment with Sydneybased Bandintexas, on Great Lakes FM last year. The radio station has also

been named as finalists in four other categories, including ‘Best Outside Broadcast of Community Involvement or Special Event’ for their live broadcast from the 2016 Bulahdelah Show. The local amateur broadcaster, who has been hosting the ‘ROCK shed with crazy dave’ for just over 12 months, said his awardnominated interview was about the barriers encountered by females in the male-

dominated music industry. “I started talking with Kelly and Jackie from Bandintexas about females in rock music, I got their take on whether there are enough women in the Australian music scene,” he said. “I also talked with them about the hurdles they have faced to get where they are.” Crazy Dave, who has a passion for all types of Rock, said his nomination came about after the station asked him to submit some work for the radio awards earlier this year. “I was pretty stoked just being asked, and I didn’t expect anything after that,” he said. “I got a phone call last week from the Station Manager Andrew Farr, who told me I was down as one of three finalists out of literally hundreds of entries from around the country.” Crazy Dave said he was “shocked” after being told he was a finalist. The award winners will be announced at the National Regional Rural and Sub Metro Broadcasters Conference in Wagga Wagga on 11 March. The ‘ROCK shed with crazy dave’ is a combination of music, talk-back and interviews and airs every Friday night on Great Lakes FM from 6–11pm.

FROM Page 1 “I saw lots of children with no hair and I just wanted them to have some of mine,” Kirra-Lea said. “I really like long hair because I can swing it around and it makes me feel like a Princess, but there are some girls who need it more than I do.” Kirra-Lea said she has been growing her hair for the past three years and is preparing to have at least 45cms of her ponytail lopped off in April. Her hair will then be sent to Variety–The Children’s Charity to be made into a wig. As well as donating her hair, Kirra-Lea also wants to raise $1000 to help provide

wigs and vital equipment to children in need. Kirra-Lea’s parents Nathan and Melissa, said they are very proud of their daughter’s selfless nature. “She has the biggest heart of any six-year-old we’ve met,” Melissa said. “To think she is doing this just because she wants to help other people, makes us a very proud Mum and Dad.” A fundraising page has been created for Kirra-Lea with all proceeds going directly to the Children’s Charity. Execution of Search Warrant ON the 27 February 2017 police from Bulahdelah along with Forster detectives executed a search warrant at a local Bulahdelah address. This warrant action was taken as part of the ongoing investigation into a fire at a Bulahdelah saw mill. As a result of evidence uncovered during the warrant an 18 year old male was charged with setting the fire as well as a further break and enter offence at the mill. At the same time the same male was also charged with a separate matter of procuring a child under 14 years of age for unlawful sexual activity. The male was granted conditional bail to appear at Forster Local Court in March to answer the charges.

Runaway van rolled down on the street PEDESTRIANS and other road users were lucky to avoid injury about 10am 2 March 2016 when a runaway van travelled down Stroud Street, Bulahdelah. The operator of the van parked it correctly on the eastern kerb of Stroud Street, Bulahdelah facing south. When she parked it she left it in neutral with the engine throttling down (diesel) and engaged the handbrake. About five minutes after being parked the van rolled from where it was parked backwards through the intersection of Stroud and Richmond Street, and about 200 metres further, crossed over the street and crashed through a fence at the front of house coming to rest in the front garden of the house.

The Final Count By John SAHYOUN THE final customers at Holiday Coast Credit Union’s Bulahdelah Agency, completed their banking transactions shortly before the shutters were permanently closed at the facility last week. The closure of the Agency means the community is now without a financial institution. The Post Office Agency, which was in the capable hands of Roger and Judy Dixon, served the community well during its three years of operation. Mr Dixon said he was pleased to have had the opportunity to come together with Holiday Coast Credit Union to provide the wellutilised service. “The Agency has served businesses, volunteer groups, the disadvantaged and many other people in the community who have used the service as

However, the new banking arrangements are leaving some customers less than impressed. “People are discovering they can’t pay bills and some

do not wish to, or can’t use computers to access their banking,” Mr Dixon said. “Many people are annoyed, we can’t tell them the balance of their accounts or open new accounts for them.” Holiday Coast Credit Union Executive Retail Manager Earl Emerson said although the Agency has closed, the Credit Union will continue to support the Bulahdelah community through their various services. These include Mobile Bankers, the Credit Union’s Tea Gardens Branch, which is nearest financial institution,

and digital services. Mr Emerson said further support is available through the Credit Union’s Customer Support Centre which can be contacted on 1300 365724. The Holiday Coast Credit Union has been part of the town for more than two

Library Books could be shelved

By Daniel SAHYOUN

THE fate of Bulahdelah Library will soon be known, with a decision about its future expected to be made by Council next week. A spokesperson for MidCoast Council said a report was currently being prepared for consideration at Council’s Extraordinary Meeting to be held on 14 March. Community member Maureen Guthrie-Horwill, who has volunteered at the library for more than a decade, said she is disappointed that Council was considering closing the service. “This will mean the loss of another service for the community, and one that will greatly affect the elderly,” Mrs Guthrie-Horwill said. “The volunteer librarians have given countless hours of service to the community over the years, it provides a social opportunity for many people,

an opportunity that could now be lost.” Council staff, speaking at a recent meeting in Bulahdelah, indicated that the library was not being used enough to justify keeping it open. This prompted many responses on the Community Facebook page, with one member commenting as the library is staffed by volunteers, the operating cost to Council was just six-and-half-hours of electricity each week. Another stated, “If they added a desk, a kid’s area, computers that are from this century and WiFi, I think the library would get more use.” Representatives from Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism have been in contact with Council, outlining the impacts that closing the library would have on the community. The petition calls on the Council to replace the pool’s solar heating system, repaint the deteriorating surface and maintain the pool to an optimal standard. “We’d like MidCoast Council Administrator John Turner to tell us why there’s no money for the repairs and keeping the pool up to scratch,” Rhonda Bobako from the Myall Masters Swimming Club told News Of The Area. The petition also states, “The lack of solar heating will significantly reduce the pool temperature and therefore limit the duration of the swimming season, which will stop people participating in activities that help to sustain a healthy lifestyle.’’ “The pool is also essential for learn to swim programs and physical rehabilitation.” ”The deterioration of the pool surface is considered to be a safety issue for users.” MidCoast Council claims the solar heating has reached the end of its life and is too expensive to replace. Council also says it’s been quoted $50,000 to As a result of enquiries following the discovery a search was conducted on the home address of the male at Tuncurry where a further 1.9 kilos of what police allege is

repair the pool surface and repaint the lane dividers, money it just doesn’t have. Hard copies of the petition are being widely spread around the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Area. Copies for signature can be found at both Pharmacies, Hawks Nest Newsagency and Golf Club, Tea Gardens Arts and Craft Centre and numerous outlets at the Myall Quays Shopping Centre. Myall Masters recently held a very successful Carnival which attracted hundreds of visitors from all over the State but staging it again next year is in jeopardy. “The black lines are not competition standard so that’s going to stop us from having another meet,” Rhonda said. Tea Gardens and Karuah Primary Schools also hold their annual swimming carnivals at the complex. Aqua Club member Jan Peeters is another local firmly behind the petition. In a letter to Council, Jan wrote, ‘’I understand budgets and budget constraints but urge you to seek some priority for funding for this important asset to many residents of Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest.’’ Ms Bobako is urging as many as possible to add their names to the cause before she submits it to Council by the end of the month. cannabis was located. The male was later charged with supplying a prohibited drug and will appear at court in relation to the charge.

Wild Dogs Cost Millions

WILD dogs cost hundreds of millions of dollars every year, according to Hunter Local Lands Services. Not only do wild dogs kill livestock but they are killing working dogs and even pet dogs are being ripped apart while they are chained up on verandahs. Wild dogs are also having a devastating effect on native wildlife like koalas and endangered mammals such as the potoroo. A research program, conducted over 10 years ago, established that there were very few dingoes left on the Mid North Coast, with less than 10 percent of the animals captured DNA testing positive as dingoes. With so much time passing since that research program, one would be hard pressed to find a full blood dingo left on the Mid North Coast with almost all dogs being some form of hybrid. “The problem with wild dogs is that they kill for fun” said the President of the Mid North Coast Wild Dog Association Inc. Julie Steepe. “Whilst dingoes kill for food, these wild dogs we have now just kill because they can. I had four sheep killed on the same night and not one of them had a mark on them.” As well as the financial costs, there is also the untold emotional costs involved of having your flock attacked repeatedly and the constant unknown of when the next attack will occur. “There are a number of methods of controlling wild dogs, we can use 1080, we can trap them or we can shoot them, but the biggest tool we have, and the easiest way people can get involved is to report any sightings they might have. “Government agencies are saying there are no wild dogs around because they don’t have any data for dogs in the area. They want data, let’s give them the data,” Julie said. “We have plenty of ways you can report sightings, we have three Facebook pages: Community Wild Dog Alert, Mid North Coast Wild Dog Assoc and Wild Dog Control Bulahdelah or you can report sightings directly on Feralscan or your Local Land Services office. Mid North Coast Wild Dog Association Inc, with the support from Local Lands Services and National Landcare Programme will be holding a Wild Dog Awareness Day at Karuah Community Hall on Sunday 19 March 2017. There will be a free sausage sizzle and everyone is welcome.

Student Leaders Inspired By Daniel SAHYOUN

A BIOMEDICAL Engineer, an X Factor Contestant and a 15-year-old world explorer were some of the many motivational speakers who inspired students from the Myall Learning Community last week. The 21 student leaders from Booral, Tea Gardens and Bulahdelah Schools came together to attend the Halogen Foundation’s 2017 Imagination Conference in Sydney, aimed at developing their leadership skills. Tea Gardens school leader Caitlyn Condie said the most memorable part of the day was the talk given by Jade Hameister, a young explorer who completed a trek to the North Pole. “I liked Jade the best, because she kept persevering,” Caitlyn said. “And even though she was terrified, she just kept going and going and got through her fears.” The presentation given by Biomedical Engineer for humanity Dr Jordan Nguyen, inspired Booral’s

school leader Griffin Dunn. “What impressed me the most about Dr Nguyen was how he made a mindcontrolled device for a wheelchair, and this has inspired me to achieve my personal best,” Griffin said. For Bulahdelah Central School Captain Maddi Tassell, Australian Survivor Contestant Sam Webb’s talk was a highlight.

“He said it was hard when he had lost one of his friends through mental illness, but he didn’t let it hold him back,” she said. “He kept persevering, and he has inspired me to continue working towards my goals.” The students were accompanied on the twoday trip by School Principals Mr Anthony Pearson

LOCALS and regular users of Pindimar Road at Tea Gardens are calling for a reduction in the 100 kilometre speed limit. It follows a number of reports of near misses on the road which has no dividing line. A local mum of two, who does not want to be named, said she had her children in the car recently when she was nearly run off the road. On Anzac Day last year, a 53 year old man was killed when his vehicle left Pindimar Road and crashed

THE weather was perfect and the fish were biting for the Karuah Motor Yacht Club’s (KMYC) annual Offshore and Estuary Fishing Competition. More than 50 members took part in the weekend event, which saw six boats off shore and the rest of the fleet dropping their lines from tinnies and jetties dotted along the Karuah River. “They were given a list

of the species, the size had to be right, they couldn’t go over the bag limit and they had to be caught by legal methods,” KMYC’s Deanna Baker told News Of The Area A lot of juniors tried their luck and came up trumps with 16-year-old Olivia Mulder winning the Inshore Estuary award with a 2.3 kilogram flathead. “We’ve got our list of rules on all of the fish,” Deanna said. “The fish can be caught and thrown back.” “As long as they take a photo with the date shown,” she said. Independent judge for the weekend was Motor Yacht Club member Bob Dyer. Keeping it in the family was his son Dick who won the trophy for the biggest offshore catch with his 2.6 kilogram snapper. At the end of the event it was time to head back to the Yacht Club for a well earned sausage sizzle. Club members also auctioned off a number of their catch raising $120. The KMYC has since matched the amount with $340 to be donated to a local not-for-profit organisation.

My husband has started shaving his legs. Should I be concerned? Mrs KL, Ferodale

MRS KL, there are men out there with very well-defined, muscular calves. These fine examples of athleticism unfortunately rarely see the light of day due to the pelt of hair that hides their true magnificence. If you’ve got it, flaunt it, as the saying goes. Also, we live in an age where hair from the neck down seems to be viewed by anyone under 25 as a vile and vulgar defect. I’m guessing that your husband is over this age, so let me ask a couple of questions to narrow things down a bit. You just have to answer A or B for each (do it silently if your husband is sitting close by). Number one: A. My husband recently bought a 10-speed racing bike or B. My husband recently bought a Mimco bag. Number two: My husband cries when his team loses the football or B. My husband cries when Gwyneth Paltrow wears yellow. Finally, three: A. My husband borrows my car or B. My husband borrows my pantyhose. Now, let’s be clear, I am not judging one way or another. I actually think man B sounds like a lot more fun (and probably more economically viable). Regardless of the outcome, if he is a man who, postshave, removes his hair from the sink or the bath then you are in luck, Mrs KL. Be thankful for small and smooth mercies. Carpe Diem, Jasminda.

Bowls Gets Serious Karuah Men’s Lawn Bowls Club By Trevor DAVIES

KARUAH men are battling out the Club Triples Championship in one of the highest standard competitions in many years. At the time of writing this, only two teams remain in contention from the original 10 or so who started. Each game has been a cracker with enthralled spectators on the verandah of the RSL witnessing some excellent competition. Club President Gordon and his team of Stewie and John French were the favourites to take the competition. In an exciting and very close game they were beaten in the last end by Leon, Jason and David in a game that

entertained a large and vocal crowd. Leon’s side now play Mike Denko’s team in the final in what should be an epic encounter. The game should be played on Sunday morning 12 March, weather permitting. Ring the club to reserve a seat - just joking, but do come along to watch some great bowls. The pennants have kicked of and continue this week with the club 2 wins and 2 losses after 4 games. With the midweek pennant under way, the weekend pennant started this week with a very narrow loss to the side away at Soldiers Point and a good win to the side at home against Raymond Terrace on wet greens. Masters in the Swim SWIMMING Myall Masters Swimming Club By Rhonda BOBAKO MYALL Masters Swimming Club enthusiastically participated in the recent Cessnock Pointscore Carnival. Ninth placing in a field of 27 Clubs from throughout New South Wales was an extremely satisfying result. Club Coach, Leon Bobako, was thrilled with the results of the seven swimmers representing Myall Masters. Newcomer, Montanna Gessey, swam strongly to gain first placing in her three events. Montanna’s results were matched by Coach Leon who placed first in all his events. All members placed in the top four of all events entered. The team of Bobako,

Pelicans Splash to Victory By Daniel SAHYOUN KARUAH Public School’s Swimming Champions for 2017 were announced at a recent school assembly in front of students, parents and staff. Declan L was awarded the Junior Boy Champion and Jorja L’s fine form in the pool resulted in her claiming the Junior Girl title. Shaquiel also performed strongly, continually splashing his way through the water to win the Senior Boy Medallion. With many shining performances at the carnival held last month, it came as no surprise that the results in the senior girl’s division were very close. Strong swims by Reiannah S and Dakotah P lead to the pair finishing the carnival on equal points, resulting in the joint title of Senior Girl

Champions being awarded. After much suspense, Pelican, led by house captains Emma and Bailey, was announced as the winning house for 2017. Students in Kingfisher and Swift were also commended on their participation and great enthusiasm throughout the carnival. Sports Coordinator Mrs Kath Henry said it was pleasure to award the prizes. “There was a packed assembly for the distribution of ribbons and medallions,” she said. “The students were ecstatic on their win and there were many proud parents, carers and family members in attendance.” Mrs Henry now encourages all students to start training for the upcoming Athletics Carnival which will be held on 29 March.

Bowling Champs 1 March The Wednesday Gala Bowls day reverted back to the old format today as the Mid-Week Pennant side were playing away at the Water Board BC. In fine, warm conditions 36 players attended with 4 games of Fours and 2 games of Pairs being played with 12 ends being played in the

Swimming Champions: Shaquiel, Reiannah, Dakotah, Declan and Jorja.

morning and another 12 ends in the afternoon. Teams received 20 points for a win plus 1 point for ends won. As is often the case, it was a Pairs game that came away with the money. The combination of Steve Marsh, (visitor) and Col Saillard took first place. Well done! The Fours team of Kevin Barbie, Gary Wynne, Lon Richards and Henk Faber taking second place. ends will be played with the starting time being set back to 9.00am for a 9.30 start. The Mid-Week Pennant side played away at the Water Board Bowling Club today in bright and sunny conditions, despite heavy showers all around. Winning away is never easy and the Mighty Pelican Pest Control Dolphins did very well on a beautiful synthetic green running just a tad slower than home base. Two Tea Gardens teams had very close games. Mark Hair’s team lost a nail-biter 20-17 and the Greg Pearson team continued on their winning way with a last end victory 22-21. Great game! Our remaining team were outgunned losing 21-31. The final score: Water Board 72, Tea Gardens 60. It is pleasing to report that the match was played in Great Spirit with the game of bowls clearly the winner overall. 3 March It’s ironic that just a few short days ago bowls competitions were being cancelled due to the heat and now they are being cancelled because of the rain. Such was the case today when rain cancelled the Friday Open Jackpot Pairs. 4 March

The rain continued and some initial games in the Newcastle District Saturday Pennants had to be postponed. Play at Lemon Tree Passage, for the Grade 5 side, and play at Hamilton North, for the Grade 6 side were called off. They will be played next Sunday at those venues, weather permitting. The Dolphins Grade 3 side were fortunate to have an “at-home” game where they took on Cardiff. It’s a big advantage having an all-weather synthetic green. Rain threatened all afternoon and the players had to contend with frequent

light showers. Controlling Body, John Younghusband called a halt to play at the 59th end when heavy rain put an end to proceedings. As 54 ends constitute a “game”, the scores at that time were final. Tea Gardens running out winners 54-43. In the individual matches, Sean Mearrick’s team won 18-13, Richard Lees’ team were never headed and won 21-9. The Steve Pell team lost 15-21. Well done! Thanks to Umpire, Nola Jackson and Controlling Body, John Younghusband. 5 March Persistent showers

continued this morning and unfortunately there was no Sunday Bowls. The Sunday bowlers have having a rough trot lately with weather conditions. Showers cleared in the late morning to allow the Final of the Club Minor Singles Championship to proceed. The fine conditions did not last long with both players having to endure almost constant drizzle and rain, heavy at times. To their great credit the match was completed with the man with the “deft touch”, Peter Gurney winning over the 3 times “bridesmaid”, Doug Naylor. Peter showed great consistency in appalling conditions to clinch the title 31-13. Congratulations to both players and indeed all the entries in this competition. Thanks to Marker, Ross Barry and Umpire, Greg Pearson. In other news Entries are being received for the Club Pairs Championship with the first round commencing Sunday 19 March. Entries close at mid-day 15 March.

Nippers at State Champs

By Margie TIERNEY

THREE young nippers from the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Surf Life Saving Club had the time of their lives at the State Championships at Blacksmiths Beach last weekend. Sophie and Ella Howard and Tiarna Chester joined more than seven thousand competitors at Swansea

Belmont for three days of intense wet weather competition. In the flags competition, Sophie finished 8th out of 200 while Ella came in 15th. Tiarna just missed out on making the finals, while her board and swim were cancelled due to the large swell. The sprints competition was held on Saturday with

Sophie making it into the finals and Ella coming in 10th, missing a finals berth by just one place. Sophie’s outstanding finish saw her family and supporters head back to Blacksmiths on Sunday to compete in the finals and they weren’t disappointed, the tiny 10 year old coming in an amazing third and winning a bronze medal.
