Vietnam Veterans Remembered

REMEMBRANCE for veterans of the Vietnam War was conducted in a solemn and poignant ceremony at ANZAC Park, Tea Gardens, on Friday, 18 August.

While the Vietnam War’s end-date may be debated, 18 August was chosen as it commemorates the Battle of Long Tan, “a significant moment in Australia’s war in Vietnam,” said Terry Munright, Treasurer and Trustee of the RSL SubBranch of Tea Gardens.

“For three and a half hours, the 108 soldiers of Delta Company, 6th Battalion, RAR, bravely

engaged an enemy force of 2000.”

Mr Munright detailed the battle’s major actions, including the ‘ANZAC spirit’ of the 161 Field Battery of the Royal New Zealand Artillery, “without whom the Australians would have been overrun and no-doubt wiped out.”

Mr Munright’s oration featured Gordon Sharpe, a conscripted national service soldier from Tamworth, whose life story tragically ended on that day in the Long Tan rubber-tree plantation, while he was redirecting the vital artillery fire.

“On this day, we commemorate all the battles fought by Australians in Vietnam,” Mr Munright continued.

Reverend Richard Goscombe spoke about the very real, and admittedly uncomfortable, need to acknowledge and heal the disrespect and indignity meted out to returned veterans after the war.

“The 50th anniversary of a decade-long war is significant, not just for those whose lives were lost, but those who bear the scars years, decades later,” he said.

Reverend Goscombe remarked that, in biblical terms, “the 50th anniversary is the ‘Jubilee’, a time when things that were taken away are given back, and now is a timely moment to give respect and dignity to these people who served our country so sacrificially.”

The service was accompanied by Redgum’s ‘I Was Only 19’, and Terry Kelly’s ‘A Pittance of Time’, both powerful reminders that most of the troops sent over to Vietnam were, in fact, just 19-21 years old, a fact that is lost on a saddeningly large proportion of today’s society, those, ironically, spared the enforced horrors of conscription into a war.

Beach.

MidCoast Council has kicked off work to improve accessibility to Bennetts Beach, with the project including a host of fundamental and essential improvements to the site.

A new, reinforced concrete pathway is being laid to improve beach access, and eliminate poor drainage

erosion, hopefully limiting the previous leap that was required to get down to the main access from the SLSC.

Other features to be included in the upgrade will be two additional showers, some sandstone block seating, and the replacement of a small retaining wall, turfing and beach fencing –much of which has clearly reached the end of its usable life.

q Accessibility should soon be assured with some further level-matching earthen work.

“With increased usage of the beach and the facilities over the years at Hawks Nest, Council is glad to be able to perform this project to improve access and usability of the area, just in time for summer,” Amanda Hatton, MidCoast Council’s Manager Strategy and Projects, told News Of The Area.

Sustained community pressure to focus on these kinds of needs has also contributed to the activation

Cryptocurrency In Family Law

There is no doubt that over the last few years cryptocurrency has surged in popularity with brands such as Bitcoin becoming a household name. As these digital assets continue to become more prevalent in everyday life, they have also made their way into the family law sphere. Given the nature of such assets, it can pose particular difficulties in property disputes.

Identifying the existence and extent of cryptocurrency holdings is often the first issue. Whilst parties have an obligation to provide ‘full and frank’ financial disclosure about all assets, undisclosed cryptocurrency can be difficult to identify. Unlike traditional bank accounts, cryptocurrencies can be stored in “digital wallets”, registered to a number, rather than a person’s name. They are also often lacking formal regulations and oversight, although this is still a developing area.

Another significant challenge is determining the value of cryptocurrencies

of this project, with Bruce Murray, President of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association telling NOTA, “It is great to see this project underway.”

Council has also cited statistics that have been provided by lifeguards, suggesting that beach access needed improving.

“The concreting is looking amazing, and really shows how it will enable more accessibility around the Club as well as to the new showers,” Rebecca Curtis, President of the TGHN Surf Life Saving Club, told NOTA.

The new showers are yet to be installed, and, presumably, further landscaping will bring the earthen surfaces flush with the new concrete edges.

The beach access

upgrade project is being funded by MidCoast Council through the 4WD beach permit program, and is expected to take three weeks, weather permitting.

for the purpose of property division. Whilst a current value may be relatively easy to determine if you know how much cryptocurrency you or your partner are currently holding, cryptocurrency is known for its volatility, often with sharp increases or decreases in its value over relatively short periods of time. There is also the potential for unexpected tax consequences associated with cryptocurrency and in particular the triggering of significant Capital Gains Tax liability when disposing of such assets.

Both practitioners and the Courts are constantly developing strategies to manage such assets in the family law context and to accommodate the unique complexities they present. If you require assistance dealing with cryptocurrency after the breakdown of a relationship, contact Mullane & Lindsay to speak with a member of our Team.

Myall Emergency Planning Begins

EMERGENCY response groups from around the Myall Coast congregated at Hawks Nest Community Hall to begin consolidating a regional emergency plan on Friday, 18 August.

Representatives included the Pindimar/ Tea Gardens Rural Fires Service, Stroud SES, Marine Rescue Lemon Tree Passage, MidCoast Council, NSW Government Reconstruction Authority and Disaster Welfare departments, Pindimar-Bundabah Community Association and the Tea Gardens Red Cross met at the invitation of the Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA).

“The primary purpose is to discuss, with the guidance and support of our emergency service organisations, the progress of the

emergency plan to date, identify community concerns, and initiate priority actions and events before the onset of disaster season,” stated Joanne Pearce, from the HNTGPA's Myall Way Community Emergency Planning Group.

The gathering marked a long-awaited comprehensive attempt to crystalise communications between the emergency services and community groups, given that the most recent disaster management plan is many years out of date.

Among the greatest hazards identified were bushfires, storm events and eastcoast lows, telecommunications and the bureaucratic realities of cross-boundary communities.

As bushfires, floods and wild storms are an unavoidable part of living in Australia, volunteer organisations like the RFS, SES and Marine Rescue are all well-trained and prepared, however, more keen members are

always needed.

Less obvious, but equally hazardous, issues like telecommunications require serious attention on what can be done when, not if, regular mobile phone networks are obliterated by fires, floods or storms, and people need to get in contact and be accounted for.

Cross-boundaries concerns stem from the Federal, State and Local Governmental jurisdictional boundaries in our relatively broad region overlap each other excessively, which can confound planning and execution of emergency assistance.

Residents’ clarity and education on where to go for evacuation from different disaster types is also a top concern.

The recent, beautiful summery days in the middle of ‘winter’ notwithstanding, the wisest among us know that while we can hope for the best, we should be planning for the worst.

Boxer Hits for Charity

BOXING mentor and former local policeman Rob Wylie will float like a butterfly, sting like a bee at the NSW Police Boxing Competition, held at CanterburyHurlstone Park RSL on Friday, 13 October.

The Police Boxing competition is a one-two punch for charity, with funds raised going to Police

Legacy, and the PCYC, with which Rob has had a long and close connection, mentoring kids in the area into better physical fitness.

"I've always been involved with boxing, and the kids lately, and competed in many kickboxing bouts before, but this is my first boxing event," Mr Wylie told NOTA.

The Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens Boxing Club, which

meets regularly on Monday and Wednesday nights, is closely associated with Rob’s work at the Taree PCYC, which he does entirely for the kids.

“Rob jumped at the idea of starting boxing here, and, as a coach, I’m proud of the effort he’s putting in,” Phil Wallis, one of the local Club coaches, told NOTA.

“It’s about getting and staying fit, channelling

their energies, and setting goals,” Mr Wylie explained, and sometimes the goal is simply a reason to get fit.

Rob has been overwhelmed by the community support he has already received for his Sydney charity match.

“Within three days of posting on Facebook, we’d raised $1300 – the local people and businesses in this town are just great,” Mr Wylie expressed his gratitude.

“Not many people are aware that the PCYC is a charity, it relies heavily on this sort of fundraising.”

The Sydney event has already sold over 700 tickets.

This ‘Friday the Thirteenth’ may be a badluck day for his competitor, Dave Roptell,

be able to live out everyone’s fantasy of legally hitting a superior.

“Fitness is the thing right now, I still have eight weeks to prepare,” Rob said, and anyone wishing to help achieve his goal of raising $2000 can do so at https:// portal.policelegacynsw.org. au/my-fundraising/617/ rob-wylie?fbclid=IwAR1HHk vMzVhyg2x59DnUqxItuluT2 f7vhp4YXupKwHWAyQwsTc eaCmATJnk.

Local History Comes to Life

NOSTALGIA reigned as the Tea Gardens

Family Research and Family History Group hosted local photographer Christian Patteson at the Tea Gardens Library for a special historical presentation on Saturday, 19 August.

Themed ‘Growing Up In the ‘80s in TGHN’, Christian Patteson, who first arrived in the area as a schoolkid in 1977, shared snippets of his own story, then led a virtual video-tour through the decade via painstakingly preserved recordings from the Michael Rowe collection.

“Coupland Avenue was the edge of the

world, and it was a much less complicated, carefree time,” Mr Patteson reminisced.

Horses and cattle were regular sights, the Singing Bridge was still new, kids could surf down Deadmans Dunes, and houses and a racetrack sat on the moors behind Tea Gardens school.

Only two TV channels and a blessed absence of internet and smartphones sounded like an impossible fiction for some today, but it was reality back in the 1980s.

“People could even boat out to the islands, which is illegal today,” Mr Patteson continued, detailing how his endless childhood explorations introduced him to every inch of Yacaaba headland

(sometimes an island), despite a few hairy misadventures.

Nostalgia intensified with Michael Rowe’s assorted home-video collection giving the more than 40 onlookers a visceral visual reminder of how the Myall River had rich seagrass, the Hawks Nest shops had tiny gum trees, and the phone booths were “critical pieces of public infrastructure”.

Engrossing and informative, Mr Patteson granted some requests to once more lay eyes on long-lost locations, like the river’s drogher and ferry wrecks, or the once-loved Barrington House.

All the footage had been rescued from an ignoble fate at the tip by local vigilant historian Janis Winn.

After transferring as much as possible to digital MP4 format, Mr Patteson has delivered everything to the Family History and Local Research Group, indicating it desperately needs some further, ideally professional attention.

Those present roundly applauded Mr Patteson’s work, hopefully inspiring a drive to properly preserve other such relics.

New amenities block opens at Bulahdelah

ANOTHER asset designed to improve the visitor experience has been completed in Bulahdelah with the construction of a new amenities block at Lions Park.

Bulahdelah Lions Club

President Judy Dixon said the idea for the amenities block came about as there were many people staying in Lions Park and had to come across the bridge for toilet access.

“We received many requests from people that used the park so we put in for a grant which was successful and we had Council construct the facilities,” said Mrs Dixon.

Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie congratulated MidCoast

Council on the completed construction of a new amenities block for Bulahdelah’s Lions Park, made possible through $300,000 from the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program.

“I’ve been working with Council to address local community priorities through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program and I’m delighted that, through the assistance I was able to secure in the previous government, we have been able to improve these facilities here in Bulahdelah,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Investing in local community infrastructure such as this will ensure our community has access to

modern, safe, and inclusive amenities.”

Dr Gillespie said the program had now become a critical program for regional councils in local infrastructure delivery.

“I am pleased that the government is going to retain the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program as this program will go some way towards getting more community and road projects on the agenda,” said Dr Gillespie.

Many other improvements have been completed including new pathways and barbeque facilities.

It is expected that Lions Park will reopen to the traveling public in the near future.

Myall River Camp management proudly received the Gold Award at the Destination North Coast and Business NSW Gala event held in the Tweed. Managers Maree and Mac told News Of The Area, “We are over the moon!

“It was a great honour to achieve this award and to showcase our local area.

Sunday Sushi in A Taste of Japan

TASTY morsels gave a hint of future culinary delights as the new management of Tea Gardens Country Club’s The Garden Eatery hosted a ‘Taste of Japan’ on Sunday, 20 August.

The latest in a series of ‘Taste of Asia’ outings at the Country Club, previously featuring fare from Malaysia and Vietnam, patrons enjoyed Japanese specialties including maki-sushi, yaki-gyoza and takoyaki, as prepared by the new manager Jamie Zhang and his expert sushi chefs.

The sushi came in many varieties, with most diners enjoying a sampling of each, from smoked salmon to crispy chicken katsu, and delicately battered tempura prawns or vegetables.

Gyoza, better known as ‘dumplings’ by some, was best served with just the right mix of soy sauce and vinegar, to give the pan-fried pork filling its chance to shine.

Takoyaki, meaning ‘cooked octopus’, transported others to the brightly-lit avenues of Doutonbori, Osaka, where the local Japanese and visitors alike indulge in the hot street food surrounded by the illumination and sounds of the famous tourist district.

For many Club patrons, it was the first chance to enjoy expertly crafted Japanese cuisine, the likes of which would normally be scarce outside the big cities, under the clear, azure sky of the Club’s Pavilion, overlooking Port Stephens in the distance.

Jamie has stepped into some pretty big shoes, with the recent, sad

departure of Jenny Po and Ly Do, who have come to be embraced by the locals for their array of Asian dishes at The Garden Eatery.

“Jamie and his team have a strong culinary background in authentic Malaysian cuisines, as well as a passion for Japanese food,” Jenny told NOTA.

“I learnt all I know through family business,” explained Jamie, who comes to us from a long line of exotic gastronomy providers, as well as owning Chinese and Italian gelato restaurants in Maitland and Hamilton, and a specialty Japanese joint in Sydney.

Myall U3A Photography Group’s Photo of the Month

EACH month the Myall U3A Photography Group selects one photo taken by a group member to be printed in News Of The Area.

This month’s photo topic was ‘Quarters’ and the photo selected was taken by local photographer and club member Sue Donohue.

“With the subject open to interpretation, we had photos including shearers’ quarters, military quarters, fruit quarters etc,” Sue said.

This photo was taken of the first quarter moon phase on 26 July using a 150600mm lens.

The next first quarter moon phase will occur on 24

August. August has been a particularly exciting month for stargazers and astronomers alike, with five astrological events taking place.

The Conjunction of the Moon and Saturn occurred on 3 August and the Conjunction of the Moon and Jupiter on 8 August.

From August 12 to 14, the Perseid meteor shower peaked above Sydney.

Lauded as the ‘best meteor shower of the year’ by NASA, the Perseid shower whizzes past Earth every August, and has a 133 year orbit.

Island legend

Stinker’s Fishin’ and Stories

IT would be fair to say that one man in the history of Broughton Island reached legendary status - the Greek fisherman Dimitrios Georgis Karageorgis.

Known to all as ‘Kerosine Tin Jim’, the gentle giant lived on the island for 49 years where he trapped lobsters, cared for the island’s goat population, imported chooks, tended a vegetable garden, set his kerosene lamp up as a light for returning fishermen after dark and welcomed all

visitors to the island.

Jimmy did have a home in Nelson Bay, however he preferred to remain on the island with his friends - the fairy penguins, sting rays, goats, sea eagles and skinks. Official records of the man are unable to inform us as to when he arrived in Australia and where he was born.

Unfortunately, he did not leave a family on his passing in the 1970s.

Big Jim will be remembered by those who were fortunate to have met him as a kind and generous man of amazing strength.

A true character.

Stargazers across the world were able to witness over 100 meteors per hour.

Hopefully, with a clear sky on August 27, we’ll have good visibility of Saturn in opposition.

Around its August 26 - 27 opposition, Saturn is rising in the east at sunset and will be visible all night.

Afterward, for the rest of 2023, Saturn will remain visible in the evening sky.

It’ll finally disappear in the sunset glare by midFebruary 2024.

Date and time of opposition: 18:00 AEST on August 27, 2023

Just a stone’s throw

IT was early last week when I had run out of things to do. The wind had been blowing

from the west or northwest for close to a month and the sea was as flat as a flounder. The worst possible conditions for me to catch a snapper.

on a 2 metre sea to whip up waves that crash over the shallow reef in front of the Fingal Outer Light.

This creates the ideal conditions for big snapper to

gather in the white water.

As if sent by some mystical fishing God, the wind started blowing from the south and a bumpy sea slowly built. Here we go. I’m off!

With ‘Stinkpot’ hitched up I headed for Kiddies Corner on Fingal Beach.

It was about 2.30pm when I dropped anchor just north of the two white poles that signify the Sanctuary Zone.

The wind blew me

to within 20 metres of the bombie. Perfect!

With no berley trail, I tossed the first bait of a fat prawn on a 6/0 hook, no lead, just short of the white water.

Set my rod in the holder and started organising my second rod.

As I baited the second rod, with a cube of fresh yellowtail, rod number one went off with a bang!

The reel screamed, the line was tight as a violin string and the rod had buckled over, with

the tip just out of the water.

The squeal of the reel was fantastic.

The pressure was so great I had real trouble pulling the rod out of the rod holder.

After a fair battle I hauled a cracking 8kg snapper over the side and into the esky.

As I was recovering, rod number two buckled and buck jumped.

Another awesome snapper.

I caught a couple more and ended up leaving the fish biting, upped the anchor and headed home.

I remember driving back up the driveway at 4.45pm.

In a bit over two hours, I had launched the tinny, motored out to the lighthouse, caught a bag of fish and returned home.

Where else, apart from Port Stephens, can you catch cracker snapper out of an 11foot tinny with a 9hp motor, less than 2km from home?

Nowhere I know.

Sack the coach

AS much as I enjoy watching most sports being played at the highest level, it continues to disappoint me when I hear demands from supporters of a losing team to “sack the coach”.

It is the players on the field who provide a win or are defeated by a better team on the day, despite the attempts of their coach to motivate them to provide their best efforts on the field.

Maybe they didn’t deliver the coach’s plan.

Maybe it was just bad luck, or the run of the game that decided the result.

So why do we see this irrational “sack the coach” response from some people?

Presently the rugby league teams experiencing this are St George Dragons and the Gold Coast Titans, with recent changes in coaches for the Wests Tigers and Canterbury Bulldogs.

These are all so-called professional football teams and play the game for money, as do their players.

To my way of thinking (and of course I might have this wrong), it is clearly a lack of loyalty from supporters who really need to ”support” their players and staff, not

unfairly criticise them for not winning every week.

When you have a 16-club competition in any sport, some teams are in the top eight positions and the rest are in the bottom half of the table.

This is the simple fact of life, no matter how good the players or managers/coaches happen to be.

When we look at our nation’s economy, we see and hear similar and often unjustified demands to sack a particular ‘coach’, be he or she a cabinet minister, particularly in the Treasury area.

The one that offends me the most is the top economic decision maker within the Reserve Bank.

The Governor's duty is to manage the economy to the best of his ability.

He has a team of Government appointees representing the community with special qualifications to act as a committee to make decisions based upon the best available economic data when applied to their plan to manage the economy.

The Reserve Bank’s task, amongst many, is to contain the rate of inflation to between 2 and 3 percent.

It is currently running at just below 6 percent, so they must pull the levers controlling the economy in order to achieve that outcome.

This creates a situation where interest rates are used to rein in people’s expenditure on goods and services in order to bring the economy back under control.

This is done until they reach their goal of creating a much lower rate of inflation, with the desired result of keeping the cost of living within people’s ability to manage comfortably on their present incomes.

The Governor’s position is a contracted

one for a period of time.

Unlike that of the sporting coach, the role is supposed to be independent of outside or political influence.

The Governor’s position is said to deliver a salary of $1 million per year.

Many coaches of professional sporting teams generate salaries of $500K and $750K annually - some might even earn more.

However, when they are sacked, they usually receive their remaining contracts paid out as part of their removal.

The Reserve Bank Governor completes his present contract in September this year.

It will be interesting to see if the newly appointed female Governor, being a longtime employee of Treasury and the past deputy Governor, an important part of the decision-making committee that raised interest rates so many times, decides to change the process in order to deliver a different result.

So much for no political interference if that happens to emerge.

Sacking the coach whose team failed to deliver the important requirement of keeping the voters happy would prove to be a poor result for the Banks’ perception of independence in the field of economic decision making.

I guess it all comes down to who gets the blame for roaring inflation in our economy.

Who do you think might be the fall guy for the course of our economy?

Is it the Governor of the Reserve Bank, the associated committee, the federal Treasurer or just the desire of the federal Government to pass the buck to someone else in order to declare that it is just not their fault for the tightening direction of our faltering economy.

Pindimar Minderoo Muster

VOLUNTEERS from the Australian Resilience Corps will muster at Pindimar North and South for three days, 19-21 September, aiming to mitigate future bushfire disasters in the area.

The ‘Muster’ is a specifically organised, on-site project under the Minderoo Foundation’s Fire and Flood Resilience mission, and includes local community members and corporate volunteers to “build proactive, confident, and resilient communities”.

Minderoo approached MidCoast Council, an LGA home to many high-risk areas, seeking to provide Resilience Corps’ volunteer assistance in tackling.

Mid Coast District’s Bush Fire Risk assessment of the Pindimar, Bundabah and North Arm Cove areas is officially “likely” and “extreme”, the consequences rated

“catastrophic”.

MidCoast Council is also putting the call out for local

volunteers to bolster the ranks; those who live in and around these areas should already realise the benefit the added mitigation will provide.

“We are looking for community members who would also like to contribute to the bushfire preparedness of their community, and the Tea Gardens Men’s Shed is ready to assist as well,” Steve Carmichael, MidCoast Council’s Bushfire Officer, told NOTA.

Registration is essential to join and volunteer with the ‘Pindimar Minderoo Muster’, mainly for insurance purposes, and can be done in three simple steps online at https://www.resiliencecorps.org. au/muster/mid-coast-pindimarmuster-day-1/.

From the Resilience Corps, across each of the three days of

the Muster, up to 30 volunteers will roll into Pindimar, including university students and corporate members, many coming up from Newcastle.

“Fire trails up Nardoo and Wyree Street in North Pindimar, and Corbie and Challis Avenue in South Pindimar are the target areas,” Mr Carmichael detailed.

Owing to the ‘papersubdivision’ reality of Pindimar’s maps, some target ‘roads’ will resemble bush paths with plenty of vegetation to be cleared, and trimming tree branches.

Volunteers should carefully note the clothing and tool requirements, laid out on the Resilience Corps’ website, such as sturdy, close boots and long pants and sleeves, as well as ample weather and sun protection.

OPINION & LETTERS

Draws By Paul

July and August Progress Association Update OPINION

SPRING is around the corner, and we are progressing lots of great things in and around our villages, starting with the arrival of our exercise equipment at Providence Bay Park, plus the upgrades to Hawks Nest beach foreshore, plus the pending improvements to all nine amenity blocks!

The installation of the three exercise stations in Providence Bay Park will take up to six weeks, all managed by a joint project team comprising the supplier, Moduplay, and MidCoast Council (MCC), and Progress members.

Of note, this project did not require $19,000 for solar lighting and following an application by our Grants Officer, the NSW Government and MCC approved a variation to install new solar sensor lighting at both the Tea Gardens Skate Park and the Lions Lookout (amenities and dump point).

The new robust Green Frog Systems lighting will be professionally installed and be managed as a MCC asset, improving immediate and long-term safety and amenity.

Onto other local projects now progressing:

• Bennetts Beach landscaping and shower upgrade: Well underway (refer photos) to be completed before summer.

• Apex Park Repair plus Jetty replacement: MCC advised that Crown Lands have approved the extension and a contract award process is underway.

• HN Fishing Platform upgrade: Underway to be completed before summer.

• Cemetery Wall and Garden: Following several work requests to the MCC, the retaining wall at the cemetery has been upgraded from rotting timber to a concrete block wall.

We will be holding a working bee to improve the gardens and plant native flowers.

• Toilet Upgrade Win: Following a spate of serious graffiti and vandalism plus the ongoing neglect and cleanliness issues, we provided an assessment report to MCC with photos of nine blocks.

As a result, the MCC $100k of capital funding to improve all blocks this FY.

This is a great outcome and please help by being vigilant and reporting any issues to MCC (7955 7777) and/or the Police Assistance Line (131 444).

• Myall River Dredging: We strongly support the Myall River Action Group (MRAG) and have sent letters to the relevant state and federal Ministers.

We share MRAG’s concerns about the silting of the Myall River and the collective need to ensure it remains open to navigation.

• Tea Gardens Pool: With our second successful grant ($2500), we purchased a new lap timer, new clock, and flags.

The old lap timer has been removed, cleaned and parts replaced, and will be reinstalled, plus the Honour Board has also

DEAR Jasminda,

Since the final game with the Matildas, I'm feeling a bit blah.

The game was something to look forward to and now life has gone back to its dreary everyday slog.

What now?

Dear Narelle,

Narelle G.

IT would have been impossible to predict that the World Cup would unify Australians when we are so intent on being argumentative and disconnected about everything (Climate Change, windfarms, YES vote, foreign policy, freedom of speech, and any issue on any 'You Know Your From ...' Facebook page where even a simple query about free cat sitting can turn into an aggressive argument about declining

bird species, responsible pet ownership, security cameras, and minimum wage requirements).

The excitement of the Matildas was palpable.

Suddenly people who had never played soccer, and who had certainly never watched women play soccer, were on a first name basis with the players and their merits.

My daughter who has never played team sport was shouting out tactical advice.

My husband wanted to watch Bend it Like Beckham between games.

There was talk of a public holiday and political euphoria not experienced since Hawke said: "Any boss who sacks someone for not working today is a bum."

So, it is no wonder that many people are experiencing a bit of a post-Matildas slump.

Perhaps one way to get around it is to encourage more young girls to move off the sidelines and onto the field, and to support them with the same fervour as we have in the last few weeks when they do.

been renewed – by the Men’s Shed and members (thank you!).

The remaining funds enabled the shower floors to be repaired, additional safety handrails to be installed, plus rustproof replacement hardware.

The Winter Working Bees have continued to clean the pool deck, garden, and maintain the facilities.

Separately, we have requested the MCC to provide a copy of the LGA-wide pool review which will, in part, inform the future operations. We retain serious concerns about the pool’s future, and strong united community support will be vital to its future and any upgrades following the pending 2023-24 season.

Singing Bridge Golden Jubilee 6 April 2023: The Sub Committee had its first planning meeting on 11 August (thank you!) and developed a draft event management plan.

We will be applying for event grants to fund this historic and important festival.

The event (like our Bridge) will span both villages and we hope to engage closely with MCC and our community groups and local businesses to ensure a great party.

For our members (we need more!), please note:

• Volunteer Support: We won another minor Stronger Communities grant that was required to be used on volunteer expenses (PPE) and we purchased BBQ aprons, sun caps, and UV shirts.

• Heatherbrae Bunnings Fundraising BBQ: To date we have had two BBQs raising over $2500 with the next one scheduled Sunday 17 December (all day) with a Xmas raffle.

Finally, this August is our Membership Drive Month, and we need you!

As you can see around our twin villages – projects are now progressing but only due to your continued strong community support and a strong membership so we can lobby local, state and federal government action, apply for grants, and apply volunteer power.

Please contact to renew or join at HNTGProgress@gmail.com, costing only $15 per annum.

Enjoy the local improvements as the weather warms for the beach season.

New studio for the local radio station

WITH a new home, Myall Coast Radio has recently recommenced broadcasting.

The studios have transferred from the industrial estate in Tea Gardens to the Bulahdelah Rural Transaction Centre.

Being off air for seven weeks was a bit of a worry but a dedicated team of volunteers and technical people made a seamless transition between the sites.

“We were approached a few months back with the possibility of establishing the studio in Bulahdelah and we thought it was a great idea as it will become a valuable community asset,” said Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism President John Sahyoun.

“We are truly focused on making this a regional voice for the Myall Coast area and stream our love of this area and music to the world.”

The new studio was funded by the State Government through the Community Building Partnership program and

Tennis and Pickleball Are In Season

RACQUET sports are reigniting into spring, as the winter footy season ends and Myall Coast residents seek more ways to get active into summer.

The Myall Park Tennis Club hosted many social tennis groups, with some big events planned for the end of the year.

Those seeking to stay active, but weary of the court-wide dashing, have taken to the world-wide phenomenon of ‘pickleball’.

While its name was derived from its inventor’s canine companion, Pickles, one visit to the courts will convince you it is onomatopoeic, as the lightweight whiffle balls are rapidly whacked by players’ square paddles.

Now the fastest-growing sport in the United States, pickleball is also gaining significant traction in Australia, mainly for its lower-impact and smaller court area, while being great

for the reflexes.

Think of it as a cross between regular tennis and table tennis, with elements of badminton thrown in.

While no formal pickleball club has yet formed in Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens, avid players who don’t necessarily have a background in tennis gather on Thursday and Sunday mornings, 8:30-10:30am.

“Pickleball attracts everyone, it’s an all-age sport like tennis, but it’s easier to pick up,” Samantha Leggatt, Tennis Coach at Myall Park Tennis Club, told NOTA.

“It would be a great option for juniors to try in the footy off-season, and a nascent competition is forming.”

Ms Leggatt also indicated the possibility of a twilight family pickleball evening, to be organised soon.

Those in the Myall Coast who prefer a more serious competition on the full courts are also in luck, with the Tennis

Seniors Tournament, open to players aged 30 and up, due to hit Myall Park Courts from 5-9 November, featuring mixed teams.

Players wishing to join the Seniors competition will have to become a member of Tennis Seniors NSW.

Tennis players interested in something more than a casual match meet at the courts on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm, and Saturdays from 1pm.

Roos beat Hawks in Qualifying Final

GAMES don’t come much closer than when the Karuah Roos battled with the Tea Gardens Hawks in the first Qualifying Final at Lionel Morten Oval, Karuah, on Saturday, 19 August.

After being charged $8 apiece by the League to enter, spectators from all over witnessed round three of the ‘local derby’ grudge match that started and ran all the way through with some heavy hitting tackles and scores that were hailed as heroic at every turn.

Rough saw Karuah pound away at the Hawks’ well-guarded backline, relentlessly striking the righthand corner, until a switch to the far-left granted first try to Karuah’s Mitchell Baker, followed by a successful sideline conversion by Samuel Croese.

Karuah dominated possession in the first half, but Hawks defenders dragged several Roos over the sidelines in a bitter defence.

The Roos’ Koby Martyn

found the crack in the Hawks’ line for a try in the extreme right corner, and Croese performed another sideline kick.

The second half started with a strong Karuah offensive, matched immediately by a revitalised Hawks counter-surge, which

got John Schultz rammed through the Roos’ line like a Sherman tank to score directly between the uprights, successfully converted by Shaqueil Saunders.

Karuah’s third try, to Koby Gordon, came amid a fog of contentious calls that had seen play stop and start

innumerable times, as well as increasingly rough play that resulted in one Karuah player limping off.

The concrete steps erupted repeatedly as each side swept back and forth to each try-line, and finally John Schultz, in his 101st game, tank-rammed through and grounded beneath the posts again, for Saunders’ second easy conversion.

Full time score: Karuah won 18-12.

Tea Gardens Soccer Club

THURSDAY afternoon

training was well attended with our volunteer trainers passing on their knowledge.

Saturday morning saw

games played from round 14 of our local draw, with a near perfect day for our players and spectators.

In the Minis grade (5,6,7yrs), game 1 refereed by George Cassin was

between the Myall Lakes Butchers Port Jackson Sharks and the Lofty Cranes Shovel Nose Sharks ending with the Port Jacksons in front 4-0.

George refereed game 2 as well that resulted in a large

Mitch Napier, Dwayne Fleming, Josh White, Koby Gordon and Josh Page.

Two other Roos inductees – centre Ryan Saunders and winger Luke Perry - now play lock and fullback respectively for rival club Tea Gardens Hawks.

Evans, the Roos’ hard working President and Team of the Decade inductee, told News Of The Area that he was “proud to be named alongside so many club legends”.

“The players named have been great stalwarts and warriors for this club and top ambassadors for Newcastle-Hunter rugby league,” Daniel revealed.

Elusive custodian O’Bryan was the logical choice at fullback – a fearless competitor and

attacking weapon that has led the club to premiership honours.

Perry and Crampton were named on the wing for their try-scoring prowess and finishing ability with the dashing Page and Saunders considered a crack centre combination.

Evergreen five eighth and points-scoring ace Sam Croese was a popular choice for the number six jumper –a talented playmaker with a wealth of experience.

He may have turned in electrifying performances in the number nine hooker’s jumper in recent seasons but the crafty Evans was honoured as a half back.

Demon defender Aden Callaghan is rated one of the club’s finest lock forwards and earned the number thirteen jumper while tireless second rowers Napier and Matt Croese justified their selection with “high work

rate” tags.

The late Ben Langdon was posthumously recognised as the Roos’ number one prop forward along with the powerful Ben Bradley while long serving player-coach and experienced campaigner Fleming secured the hooker’s jumper.

Interchange players include Tyson Peters, Simi Asomua, Josh White, Koby Gordon, Jack Croese and Tim Johnson.

In finals action last weekend, the Karuah Rooettes advanced to the Grand Final of the Newcastle Maitland Regional Community Women's competition after a 28-0 win over Awabakal Morisset.

They will meet Dora Creek who tipped out Cessnock Goannas 20-18.

The Roos set up a Grand Final qualifier with minor premiers Clarence Town Cobras in the Men's Northern

margin between the Karuah RSL Wobbegong Sharks scoring 10 goals while the Aussie Roofing & Guttering Reef Sharks got close often but didn’t pop one in.

Our popular “Ice Cream Shack Player of the Day”vouchers were awarded to Miles Hood, Jerome Laver, Dylan O’Malley and CJ Williams.

Spend your vouchers and enjoy an ice cream kids.

Game 1 in the Midis’ grade (8,9,10 yrs) the Ray White Real Estate Bull Sharks stay in front of the Tea Gardens Auto Electrics Hammerheads Sharks with the Final score of 6-2 when regular volunteer Andrew McCormack from Hawks Nest Pro Shop blew the fulltime whistle.

Game 2 was a close match between the Rapley Builders Grey Nurse Sharks and the Boatshed Cafe’ Mako Sharks that ebbed and flowed back and forth until the very end.

The Makos had their

noses in front 5 goals to 4 at the full-time whistle.

One of our experienced players Lily Fidden refereed this exciting game, thanks Lily.

The proud recipients of our “Hook N Cook Player of The Day” vouchers were Oscar McCormack, Archie Wall, Elijah Fraser and Lucy Laver. Go grab some fish’n chips kids, enjoy those vouchers.

The Juniors grade (10,11,12 yrs) game was an arm wrestle between the Hawks Nest Golf Club Thresher Sharks and the Mumms on Myall Tiger Sharks.

Volunteer referee Ross Fidden had his hands full all game with both teams showing fantastic skills, determination and grit with one goal being awarded to each team.

A hard fought 1-1 draw was the result.

Congratulations to Saxon Rapley and Beaunon

Lawrence were awarded the “Hook N Cook Player of the Day Vouchers”.

Fish’n chips for lunch after soccer?

The winners of our “Tea Gardens Hotel Half Time Raffle Voucher” and the “Mumms on Myall Midday Raffle Voucher” were Maiko Tully and Andrew O’Malley. Enjoy your meals folks.

Thanks to volunteer Nadine for running the raffle every Saturday.

Our Friday night meat tray raffle at the Tea Gardens Hotel was run well by Kirsten and Sonya, thanks ladies!

Anyone out there who is looking to enrich their life by volunteering in your local community, please come along and have a chat.

Thanks to our volunteers Colleen, Wink, Brownie and “the two grannies” Anne and Donna for keeping everyone happy by helping to run our popular canteen this week. Cheers!

This US genealogy series hosted by Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. is bursting with personality. A little more brash, fun and moving than its cohorts such as Who Do You Think You Are?, emotions are heightened in this enthralling mix of DNA and history. Featuring a bunch of stars, its guests all have an entertaining knack for wearing their hearts on their sleeves and playing up the drama. Season seven premieres tonight, with acclaimed actress Glenn Close and director John Waters discovering stories of goldrush Yukon and an enclave in Quaker Pennsylvania.

The world of TV dramas can be staunchly far-fetched, but there’s nothing forced about this excellent Aussie series. Its heart-wrenching, authentic quality is partly attributed to the fine cast, including Stephen Peacocke (The Newsreader), Emma Harvie ( from Accounts) and Justine Clarke (Tangle), and also the fact that all the extraordinary storylines are based on real incidents from the Royal Flying Doctors Service. Punctuated with close-ups of the characters, the intimate camera work pushes all the emotional buttons. Tonight, Pete (Peacocke) must work with the suddenly returned Eliza (Emma Hamilton) on a mysterious case of a sick fouryear-old boy.

wondering, it’s pronounced “what the FAQ”.

tonight, this rambunctious and inquisitive new eight-part series is a little like Google as a live entertainment show, complete with musical sequences and comical asides. It’s presented by a team of wisecrackers – Chas Licciardello (The ), Kirsten Drysdale (The Checkout), Lawrence Leung, Lou Wall, Cameron James and Alex Lee (The ) – who will do whatever it takes to answer viewers’ burning questions. In each episode around six questions are dealt with, such as, “Why is yawning contagious?”. This boisterous shebang includes expert interviews, experiments and demonstrations.
