A GLORIOUS day was enjoyed by many at the RFS Parry's Cove Charity Golf Day 2024, held at Hawks Nest Golf Club on Friday 24 May.

Originating from the wake of the 2019/20 mega-fires, the Charity Day has persisted as a main way for the local volunteer Rural Fire Service (RFS) brigade to acquire equipment and facilities beyond the spartan basics they are initially supplied.

Beginning bright and early, the firies, along with compatriots from the Tea Gardens Lions Club cooking up the BBQ breakfast, were relieved to see clear blue skies, with just a hint of a breeze,

altogether a merciful reprieve from the seemingly ceaseless rains of late.

“The golfing gods were with us,” said John Dunning from Sheargold, the developer of Parry’s Cove and the day’s major sponsor.

With the sirens, the golfers were off to enjoy the day on the course, returning to the clubhouse at lunchtime to enjoy a delicious roast meal, and settle in with nongolfing attendees to listen to the event's special guest speaker, Mr Tony Abbott AC.

Mr Abbott spoke of his more than 20 years in the Davidson

RFS Brigade, parallel to his time in the Federal Cabinet, and the humbling realities of volunteering.

“Today’s turnout shows great community support,” Pindimar/ Tea Gardens RFS Captain David Bright said.

“The RFS is all volunteers; we work with fires, but also assist at MVAs (motor vehicle accidents), the SES, the ambos, missing persons, floods, etc.

“All the money goes to the needs of the volunteers of the Pindimar/Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service, namely our building projects at the

station.

“With more female members now, we only have one toilet and one shower (in the same room), and need a female bathroom, a locker-room, as well as a commercial quality laundry to keep fireground carcinogens out of our homes.”

In a cruel quirk of bureaucracy, despite the fact that Council owns the Tea Gardens Station building, the Brigade still needs to pay for extensions, fit-outs, and the development application for these extensions,

which are all still in discussion between the RFS and MidCoast Council.

On behalf of the entire volunteer Brigade, Captain Bright thanked ‘Deputy Captain’ Tony Abbott for his time, Peter Sinclair, the Brigade’s patron for more than 40 years, as well as all the local businesses and individuals who donated prizes and funds, including major sponsor Parry's Cove (Sheargold), and Phil Jones (Design Bilt), totalling close to $20,000 to help meet the local Brigade’s human needs.

Tony Abbott shares tales of RFS service

A VOLUNTEER RFS Deputy Captain and former Australian Prime Minister, Tony Abbott was the special guest speaker at the Pindimar/Tea Gardens RFS Charity Golf Day at Hawks Nest Golf Course on Friday 24 May.

Mr Abbott, who has been an active member with the Rural Fire Service (RFS) Davidson Brigade in northern Sydney for more than 20 years, readily recounted much of his long volunteer firefighting career, alongside

tales of Federal Cabinet life.

“I was first interested in the RFS in the 1994 Eastern Seaboard Fires, when hundreds of homes went down, and I had decided to join, but then found myself pre-selected and elected to Parliament.

“Years later, after the Sydney Olympics, the bushfires hitting Killarney Heights along the Wakehurst Parkway made me revisit that decision, despite being an MP by then.

“I called to ask what I could do, they said 'maybe

help make sandwiches', because without proper training there’s not much one can do, which was fair enough.

“My first deployment was in the middle of training; they asked me if I could do a 24-hour deployment to the Central Coast.

“I had just been promoted to Cabinet, and had a Cabinet meeting the next day, but I said yes and had to tell Cabinet I was unavailable and gone to fight the fires along the outskirts of Wyong.

“When questioned by a Cabinet colleague later on, I said: ‘You've got to be a human before you can be a Cabinet Minister.

“My work with the Brigade is at least as important as anything I did with Government, and there is something wholesome, good, and true about doing it for the community.

“I was sent to the 2003 Snowy Mountains fires, then 2005 Grampians fires, completed my Advanced

Under section 109 of the Public Health Regulation 2022 the cremation authority must either:

• give the cremated remains to the applicant; or

• dispose of the cremated remains in a burial ground adjoining the crematorium; or

• otherwise retain or dispose of the cremated remains.

Who controls the ashes of the deceased?

While the ashes are to be given to the applicant, the executor has both the first right to custody of the ashes and a duty to dispose of the body.

The executor:

1. is expected (but not required) to consult with any interested friends and/or relatives;

2. may not exercise their right so as to exclude friends and relatives from expressing their affection for

Firefighter, Village Firefighter, chainsaw, Breathing Apparatus, and Crew Leader courses, and am still at Davidson Brigade, 24 years later."

Mr Abbott recalled the reality-check when his team saved a paddock, wondering why they weren't saving the farmhouse, and the farmer thanked them, saying the house was insured, but his livelihood was in the land, and its irreplaceable livestock feed.

the deceased in a reasonable and appropriate manner; and

3. should consider the express wishes and the cultural and spiritual values of the deceased (but the executor is not required to follow the deceased’s wishes because the Court has held that it is not competent for a person to dispose of their own body by will or otherwise).

What if there is a dispute?

Where there is a dispute over the control of the ashes, the executor’s decision is usually final.

However, in certain circumstances the NSW Supreme Court may intervene on the application of an interested friend or relative.

Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation

Mr

spoke about his time

“In 2007, I was beaten for the Davidson Deputy Captain election, while still a senior Cabinet Minister, by an unemployed motor mechanic, but he turned out to be the right person for the job,” Mr Abbott acknowledged.

“I left Parliament and returned as a Deputy, just in time to serve in the 201920 'fire apocalypse' for our state, where I did more days in service than any other year before, and I had never felt prouder, more humble, than when we were applauded by hotel patrons after saving Manana.

“As far as I am concerned, I wish to serve with the RFS for as long as I am physically capable.

“The strength of a country is in its people, which is not counted in money, qualifications or their job, but in his or her character - by what you choose to do, not for money, but for love.

“Community service

groups and clubs are doing wonderful things for Australia, they are the spirit of Australia, and I am very proud to have been a small part of it."

and disability services currently provided by MidCoast Assist to the community.

There was a strong response to recent requests for proposals from interested parties, following a decision in February by Council to transition out of the services.

Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell, confirmed that Council will now enter into talks with Kirinari Community Services (aged care) and Ability Options (disability services) with a view to transitioning services.

“Council is confident that a good outcome will be secured for the aged care clients, disability participants and staff of MidCoast Assist, through these negotiations.”

Mr De Szell said it is important that clients, participants, families and carers understand that there will be no change to services until they are directly notified by MidCoast Assist of how the transition will work.

“When the negotiations are complete a report will be provided back to a Council meeting for a decision,” he explained.

“It is anticipated that following that decision, contracts will be entered into and transition plans developed to support staff, clients and participants in the transfer of services.”

Mr De Szell said clients, participants and their families and carers will be contacted in advance of any changes.

MidCoast Council made the decision to transition out of the delivery of ageing and disability services in February 2024.

MidCoast Assist was a legacy function of the former Great Lakes Council and began in the 1990s when other government-

funded providers withdrew from the Local Government Area.

“At the time, the objective was to provide services to the community which were not otherwise being provided by the community services sector,” Mr De Szell said.

“Today there are multiple providers (large and small) of both ageing and disability services located in the MidCoast region.

“Those providers offer a broad range of services for the elderly and for people living with disability.”

Mr De Szell said as a result of the

constantly changing landscape, MidCoast Assist has been under periodic review to ensure it was a viable part of Council’s activities.

Ageing and disability services are a discretionary service rather than a core Council business such as roads, water and sewer, planning functions and waste management.

Mr De Szell paid tribute to the staff of MidCoast Assist, saying they have delivered a fantastic and valued service for our community over the course of its operation.

“The decision is absolutely not a reflection of a lack of effort or capability on the part of MidCoast Assist staff – they have been outstanding,” Mr De Szell said.

Have your say on Council LEP

PROPERTY owners have an opportunity to talk to council staff about the impact of the new draft Local Environment Plan (LEP) at drop-in sessions in Hawks Nest, Bulahdelah and Stroud.

All land in the MidCoast is zoned into different categories ranging from residential, rural, employment, conservation recreation and waterways.

These zones dictate what can and can’t be done in your neighbourhood, from how the land can be used to the types of buildings and heights allowed.

Council’s Director of Liveable Communities, Paul De Szell said the draft LEP is something everyone should take some time to check out.

“Originally there were three LEPs for each of the different Council areas,” he explained.

“But this is something our staff have been

working hard on for years to bring them together to create one document for the entire region, it provides a more consistent approach.

“It’s an important document that affects all landowners in some way.”

Mr De Szell said in many cases the changes might be as minor as a name change for your particular zone.

Either way, he said it was important to review the draft and provide feedback.

Head to Council’s website to find out more information, use the interactive mapping tool or attend a drop-in session to talk to Council planners about how it affects you.

Sessions will be held at Bulahdelah (outside the IGA) on 11 June from 10am-noon, at Hawks Nest Community Centre on 13 June from 2pm-6pm, and outside Stroud’s museum on 19 June from 9am-1pm.

Phone appointments are also available by calling 7955 7777 or by registering for a call back at www.midcoast.nsw.gov.au/lep

Wide World of Sports visits Hawks

IT WAS lights, camera, action when NBN/Nine Wide World Of Sport (WWOS) cameras visited the Myall River and Tea Gardens Hawks RLFC training at Myall Park on Thursday 23 May.

Footage taken from the evening included interviews with team leaders and players from across the club, as well as women’s tackle training action, and even interviews with a cohort of charismatic juniors.

NBN representatives on the ground explained the footage would find its way into nationally broadcast ‘State of Origin’ pre-game reels, starting next month, with this year’s focus being on the ‘grassroots’ of regional clubs and teams, and their love of footy.

The Hawks have seen some phenomenal growth this year, due mainly to an aggressive awareness campaign locally, and in surrounding towns.

“The Myall River and Tea Gardens Hawks combined have 200 members this year, with 130 in the juniors and 70 across men’s and women’s seniors,” Hawks President Aaron Neighbour told NOTA.

“That’s up from 70 total last year, with just 35 juniors in 2023.”

Ben Hanson, proprietor of the Hawks’ major sponsor, the Tea Gardens Hotel, was instrumental in bringing the WWOS crew to town, having worked in broadcasting himself.

“We are a proud sponsor,” Ben told NOTA.

“We are absolutely thrilled that NBN is here, it’s all about the club tonight.”

Underneath a giant full moon, all teams came to training, from the seniors right down to the littlies, representing eight competitive teams this year,

Stinker’s Fishin’: Hook a cobia and hang on!

THE cobia is a unique fish which at times is confused for a shark.

Also known as a black kingfish or a crabeater it can grow to over two metres in length and weigh up to 50 kilograms.

The quickest way to Tea Gardens, from the breakwall in Nelson Bay, is to hook one of these powerful, tenacious fish and hang on!

More common in northern waters the cobia can be caught on the surface or down

to 100 metres in depth.

Best baits include pilchards, squid, garfish, yellowtail and any live bait.

Lures and artificial bait all work.

Although not caught in big numbers, cobia do appear around this time of year with reports of crackers from Boondelbah Island and the northern face of Fingal Island.

Fingal kayak champ Keith Collin was drifting under the green hut on Fingal Island, using a miserable prawn for bait, enjoying the serenity and the magnificent

view when ‘whammo’, a monster from the deep swallowed the prawn and took off, towing the kayak and its startled occupant.

An hour or so later after being dragged across Fingal Bay and out to sea, the giant fish was brought to the side of the craft.

A huge cobia!

“Now what?” Keith asked himself.

With no possible way the fish could be hauled on board he grabbed the leader to pull the cobia closer only for the hook to straighten and the fish to slowly swim away. Phew!

Time to paddle home.

Tea Gardens locals join Variety Big Bash charity drive

BEAUTIFUL weather way

out west greeted the drivers of the Variety Big Bash charity drive from 19-25 May, including a team of locals from Tea Gardens’ Woody’s Nursery.

After covering over 3000 kilometres in six days, not to counting the trip to the starting line at Gunnedah, Matt Tulk, Jason Bush, and Mark Grummisch, in the Rabbitohs car ‘NRL2’, along with Knights car ‘NRL8’ drivers Peter Voight and Gavin Bray, are understandably exhausted, but happy.

“This is our fourth run doing the Bash, and we have raised more than $5000 for Variety in that time,” Matt told NOTA.

“We own and pay for the car, pay our own way and

accommodation, and get to go out along the route to see where last year’s funds were sent.

“The route takes us through schools, community groups and families that contacted Variety for help, all over the map, and we raise more money each year to give to Variety to distribute as needed next year, too, so it keeps on going.

“Our local businesses, tradies and community are so generous around here, and nursery suppliers have donated goods, the proceeds from which we donate to the charity.

“The community here is bloody generous, the anonymous donors are incredible.”

One major element of the funds raised came from pig races at the Tea Gardens

Country Club back in March.

While previous years have delivered bone-chilling nights in the western expanses, this year blue skies offered a “perfect run”, according to Matt.

“The excitement of the kids is the main highlight.

"We went to some very small schools, and they saw all the other drivers dressed up as all kinds of characters.”

The final leg was from Muswellbrook to Newcastle, where it all wrapped up with the Variety Family Fun Day, announcing a total of $1.2 million raised this year, of which the ‘NRL2’ cars raised $11,207.

More information, including some awesome photos from the trip, can be found on the Variety NRL2 Facebook page.

Craft Group donate to community groups and cancer research

THE Biggest Morning Tea for cancer research hosted by the Wednesday Craft Group (WCG) on 22 May at Hawks Nest Community Hall was yet another stellar success for the crafty ladies.

The annual Craft Group event itself raised over $800 for the Cancer Council, but the date was also the WCG’s annual donation event for five major community service groups: Pindimar/ Tea Gardens Rural Fire Service (RFS), Stroud State Emergency Service (SES), Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Meals on Wheels, the Free Clinic Bus, and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

The monies donated to each group come from the ladies’ tireless raffles and fundraisers throughout the year.

“The Wednesday Craft Group has been running raffles for around fifteen years, and the money we

donate to our community groups goes to the local branches, not the central offices, so we are happy that we can support our local services groups here,” said WCG’s Kris Whiteley.

Pindimar/Tea Gardens RFS Captain David Bright accepted on behalf of the brigade, saying, “We are always amazed by the generosity of the community here.

“These funds will go towards the Tea Gardens station extensions, partly to accommodate our new female

members - we only have the one toilet and shower nowand also getting a commercial washer and dryer, because many fires these days have carcinogenic hazards that we cannot take home to wash with our families' laundry.”

Sandy Snape, from Stroud SES, thanked the WCG ladies, stating, “The funds will allow us to provide an up-to-date personal 'Patch'n'Go' first-aid kit for each SES volunteer in road crash rescues.”

Meredyth, from Meals on Wheels, said, “There are people in this room who have used, or assisted, our service, and many more outside, from Karuah to Bulahdelah, and this money will go towards helping our driving volunteers with fuel allowances.”

Sandra from the Free Clinic Bus explained, “Insurance is the biggest bill we have coming, and this donation helps us pay that.

“The Free Clinic Bus takes people from all over

Myall Coast out to Raymond Terrace, Newcastle, Maitland, and even Lake Macquarie appointments, but we need more drivers who are under our insurance age limit, and no special licence is needed.”

Jason from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter told NOTA there have been sixteen operations and rescues in the greater Hawks Nest area in the last eighteen months.

“These funds will go

towards special cameras for winch-down rescues from the hovering helicopter, used to capture evidence in operations.”

Rusty Sargent, from Westpac Rescue Helicopter, emotionally announced her impending retirement from the volunteer wing of the charity after 22 years, and she will be sorely missed by the community and the service.

Biggest Morning Tea urges cancer checkups

STORIES of survival were shared, along with tea and cakes, at the Biggest Morning Tea hosted by PD Solutions Cleaners at the Tea Gardens Masonic Hall on Thursday 23 May.

Di Beaton, owner of PD Solutions, said, “Cancer resonates with many present, as everybody you talk to has had somebody affected by cancer.

“You’ve got to help out where you can.

“Even if we raise just $5, it's something.

“Over the last two years, I have lost three family

members to cancer, including my younger sister and two brothers-in-law.”

Two special guest speakers from the community, Rex Dale and Kerrie Gregory, shared their stories of suffering and survival, both reinforcing the message to ‘Get Checked’.

“My message to the blokes is: 'Go to the doctor, get checked out!'; to the wives: 'Chase them to the doctor, or end up like me',” said Rex.

"I had asthma most of my life, but ran out of options, so the doctor sent me to a specialist, who sent me to an oncologist - I didn't know

what that was.

“MRIs, scans, X-rays, and chemo weekly at Maitland Hospital, saw five of the seven spots on my brain successfully burned out.”

Kerrie told of her terminal diagnosis of a ‘triple negative’ cancer, which came on the heels of another different and devastating diagnosis for her husband.

“‘Triple negative’ can't be starved like ordinary cancers, it can change and move through the body," Kerrie explained.

“The treatments were costing $950 each trip, but we switched to the Mater where the cost went down to $50 because of donations like yours today, and the cancer is gone now, with removal of lymph nodes in surgery.

“Ladies, get checked out, and check yourselves!"

Through a plethora of raffles, entry and donations from across the community, the Morning Tea raised more than $1300 for cancer this year, all of which will go directly to the Cancer Council.

Dorin’s Draws By Paul DORIN

I HAVE previously written about the political trend where 45 percent vote to the left and 45 percent vote to the right, with half the remaining ten percent either not voting or unable to be found.

This means that all the politicking is then focused on gaining the majority vote from the last five percent.

This creates a form of ‘social engineering’ where spin doctors of the political system detail what they want you to believe rather than how things actually are, so that people accept their view as reality.

I recently saw results of a survey conducted in the USA which serves as a good example of this.

The first question asked: ‘What percentage of the population in the USA is black?’.

Survey respondents answered 41 percent; the correct number is around thirteen percent.

Next question: ‘How many families achieve an income of $500,000 per year?’.

The surveyed answer was 20 percent but the reality is only one percent.

‘What percentage of Americans are vegetarians?’.

The response was 30 percent but the correct number is just five percent.

‘What percentage of Americans are

Diel vertical migration

Area,

A RECENT article in Renew Economy contained a statement that separate research has determined that the effect on ocean habitats from the development of offshore wind farms is minimal.

I draw the Federal Government’s attention to a phenomenon called diel vertical migration which occurs at depths between 200 metres and about 1000 metres (where offshore wind farms are proposed to

be built) in which small fish, phytoplankton and zooplankton migrate each night from their hiding places on the bottom to feed on the surface.

According to reputable sources, this is the largest migration on earth and it is critical to assisting with carbon sequestration in ocean depths aside from being a major source of food for cetaceans and the creatures that sharks and rays and other fish eat.

By all accounts the plankton is

DEAR

I HAVE two fully grown adults living at home because they are students, but they are so grotty I feel like I need to leave home so I can have a clean, organised space. Help!

Dear Gerry,

HOUSING affordability has meant that many of us are living in shared accommodation situations with extended family for far longer than we'd anticipated (or wanted).

In our 20s, it was fair enough to live with someone who thought the linen cupboard was a bin or who found it acceptable to put iron marks in the carpet

transgender?’.

A big question in the US armed forces at present.

The answer was 22 percent but the actual number is 0.5 percent.

‘What percentage of Americans live in New York?’.

Respondents answered 30 percent, the real number actually is three percent.

So why are there big differences between people’s perception and the actual facts?

Generally speaking, the answer could be the effectiveness of media reporting and advertising.

We tend to believe what we see and hear on television, radio and printed media.

One of the thoughts being offered is that as 20 percent of Americans regularly use ‘Twitter’, these views are seen to control a large percentage of public opinion.

extremely sensitive to light and would therefore probably react adversely to the light, obstructions and noise generated by offshore wind farms and their attendant vessels.

Nowhere in the literature published by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is this phenomenon even mentioned let alone acknowledged as something to be considered.

I know the phenomenon exists on the east coast of Australia.

While sailing offshore at night I have regularly observed plankton lighting up the surface when they are disturbed by the boat

Small modular nuclear reactors are like unicorns

DEAR News Of The Area,

RECENTLY (NOTA, 2 May 2024) I asked important questions about the Federal Opposition's nuclear policy, such as:

- Where will they be built?

- What type and size of reactors?

- What will happen to the tonnes of hazardous, high level radioactive waste generated by nuclear reactors?

- What is the risk of radioactive leakages, reactor failures and accidents?

So far, I have received no official answers from Liberal or National Party MPs, which

begs the question: what are you hiding Mr Dutton and Mr Littleproud?

As for small modular nuclear reactors (SMNRs), they are a bit like unicorns: nonexistent.

The most recent SMNR proposal was a seven module, 462 MW NuScale VOYAGR nuclear project in Utah.

After ten years in the development, capital costs ballooned out to US $9.3 billion (AU $14 billion), which equates to US $20,000/kW planned capacity (more than AU$30,000/kW).

The NuScale project collapsed and was

terminated in November 2023.

According to GenCost 2023-24, the NuScale construction costs were much more expensive than renewable energy sources, such as:

- rooftop solar panels at AU $1505/ kW;

- large-scale wind power at AU $5545/kW (fixed) and AU $6856/kW (floating);

- Snowy 2.0 pumped hydro at AU $5450/kW.

Hopefully fiscal sense will prevail and the Federal Opposition will stop chasing unicorns.

Regards,

Kenneth HIGGS, Raymond Terrace.

or who created mould experiments in the fridge, but that's not okay when you realise your flatmates are now your grown children, living rent free and often having their washing done and their meals cooked as part of a very uneven deal.

Bad habits take time to create, and good habits take time to develop.

In our home, to stop me from curling up in a foetal position and screaming, 'If you don't leave home, I will,' I've started to ease them into the idea of personal responsibility by leaving passive aggressive post-it notes on mirrors and toilets saying 'not self-cleaning' and also implementing the 'two-drawers a day' concept.

This involves every family member cleaning out just two drawers every day, leading to a more organised household without it being too overwhelming.

If that doesn't work try the 'bin two drawers a day' concept, where you randomly select two messy drawers and empty their contents or sell the items.

Your family members will soon get the message.

It would be interesting to know if similar circumstances apply to life in Australia.

Is what our young people watch on YouTube being accepted here as normal life?

As a well-educated society we are probably questioning many of the elements which are being presented to us as normal.

This questioning might be upsetting the perceived power structure in the way our society operates and by conditioning us to accept a society that doesn’t yet exist may be a method of gaining control of the way others may think that our society should operate.

I believe social engineering can only become worse and more confusing once artificial intelligence is used to present a case for changes in our society.

and dolphins.

Until recently I had no idea of the extent or complexity of this migration.

I request that you acknowledge the significance of this phenomenon and provide verifiable evidence that thousands of square kms of light-filled ocean containing numerous obstructions and making large amounts of noise from turbines and attendant vessels, if offshore wind farms are developed around Australia, will not significantly interrupt the basis of the food chain.

Yours sincerely, Cherylle STONE, Soldiers Point.

Tea Gardens Women's Bowling Club

THIS story begins on Thursday 1st February, 2024 day 1 of play NDWBA Pennant Season, the following is a

tale of determination, team work, training, coaching and great bowling, ( perhaps I should say blood, sweat and tears). TGWBC had 2 Grade 3 sides entered in this Pennant

Competition, Grade 3 White and Grade 3 Blue. Pennants concluded on Tuesday 27th February our Grade 3 White coming first in their section hence progressing

to the Post Sectional PlayOffs. These were contested on Monday 4th March at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club, another story of success our ladies defeated a Soldiers Point side 54 v 32 winning a NDWBA Pennant flag, 11 years since this was last achieved. The next step the Regional Finals played on the Monday 8th & Tuesday 9th April again at Raymond Terrace. On day 1 of play they convincingly defeated Scone 65 v 18, a tough contest the next day against East Cessnock our ladies winning by 1 shot 43 v 42. This win meant not only was this Pennant side the first to bowl/win at a Regional Final but our first ever team to bowl at a State Pennant Final to be played at Ballina, Tuesday

21st to Thursday 23rd May.

Day 1 our ladies had a good win against St Johns Park, the next morning went down to a side from Penrith but coming second in their section they qualified for Round 1 of the Finals here a win against Nyngan 39 v 35. Semi Final the next morning resulted in a win for Tea Gardens v West Tamworth 44 v 30, this match concluded on the 41st end. Now to the end of this story the Final and what an ending TGWBC Grade 3 White demolished Tuncurry after 39 ends the score 56 v 31. TGWBC will be 69 years old in November congratulations, well done and every accolade to the team consisting of Bev Harrington, Lynne Green, Gay Pezet and Robyn Beaumont and the the other half of

the side Lyn Nightingale, Robyn Webster, Karen Green and Pat Baker also to the reserves Deyonne Page and Irene Roberts for bringing home our first State Pennant Flag. Thanks for your good bowling as well to Lorraine Murphy and Sheila Rattray who bowled in the side earlier in the season. No social bowls played Tuesday 21st May due to rain. Results from Thursday 23rd May as follows a win to Jan Coomer, Ingrid Luck and Judy McGavock 16 v Maryanne Cuss, Judi Polak and Dale Winter 12. Lynda Richards and Preccy Swaddling defeated Sue Morris and Jean Glover 15 v 13 and an 11 all draw to Kay Berczelly and Jane Uff v Kris MacDonald and Carol Hayden. The winners on the day winning with the highest margin were Jan, Ingrid and Judy.

Junior Hawks win host of home games

CLEAR skies met the gala of home games for the Myall River Hawks JRLFC at Myall Park on Saturday morning, 25 May.

Backing off their brush with stardom from the Wide World of Sports (WWOS) training visit earlier in the week, all home games were glorious victories for the Hawks, in what was a truly fun and wholesome day at the home field.

The U6s, and their parents, started bright and early, the former burning up their limitless energy in a friendly game of tag-footy with Raymond Terrace, exhibiting the young sportsmanship we all want to see, especially as

the visitors had to lend the Hawks two players to make up the numbers, while coaches acted as referees and helped the kids learn and practice the game.

The U9s played Nelson Bay, in what became a high-scorer for both sides, with pace maintained back and forth along the field throughout.

Both teams scored tries almost every time they took possession – the future of both clubs seems bright.

Next, the field suddenly expanded as the U11s took to the pitch, and some players found that with the right off-field incentives, the tries can come thick and fast.

The U11s wore their game faces, rocking into

half-time leading Swansea 18-12, the stars of the WWOS interviews on training night leading the team of many serious young players to several good tries and solid conversions, and confidence in the future of the Club’s Senior Men’s and Women’s teams.

At two minutes to go, the Hawks were up 30-24, and the tension ratcheted noticeably after a knockon against the Hawks gave Swansea possession with just enough time to possibly equalise with a converted try.

For the Hawks, it was the difference between a draw or victory, and their defence held to take the game, and both sides sang their songs, regardless of the outcome.

FRIDAY

SOCCER

TEN, 7.30pm

Set to roar with the spectacle of a sell-out crowd, the Matildas have well and truly captured the nation’s hearts. Coming off the back of 12 sold-out matches and with the Olympics just around the corner, this highly anticipated friendly against China from the picturesque Adelaide Oval is set to get the adrenaline pumping for soccer fans new and old. The Matildas will be looking to assert their dominance in this warm-up against the reigning AFC Women’s Asian Cup champions as they prepare for their mission to secure their first Olympic gold medal.

FRIDAY, May 31

SUNDAY

TULSA KING

TEN, 8.55pm

He may be 77 but, in his television debut, Sylvester Stallone is still kicking (and punching) in this wry new series from Yellowstone Sheridan. In this fast-paced, nine-part escapade, the Rocky and exudes unflappable movie-star presence as he embraces the comical side of crime playing New York mafia player Dwight; he’s recently released from a long stint in prison and trying to set up his new life and empire in Oklahoma. In tonight’s second episode, “Centre of the Universe”, Dwight, Tyson (Jay Will) and Bodhi (Silicon Valley’s Martin Starr) take a detour while on a “business” road trip. Also featuring the handsome Garrett Hedlund, it’s like The Sopranos without the dark psychology.

WEDNESDAY

NICOLE KIDMAN, EYES WIDE OPEN

SBS, 8.30pm

Known for her broad

Kidman is a celebrated star around the world, but also Rabbit Hole and Big Little star doesn’t speak openly about her personal life or indeed give many wide-ranging interviews, but this compelling, admiring doco from Patrick Boudet carves out an intimate exploration of the connections between her life and extensive portfolio of unique roles. There’s no new interviews from her, but French film critic Michel Ciment’s extensive 2012 chat, as well as her colleagues’ insights, polish this fascinating celebration of Kidman’s artistic spirit.

Hawks Nest Ladies Golf SPORTS

Competition

For those not in the know, this is a unique and special golfing event held each Thursday for lady

golfers over the age of 50. It’s all about being social, active, and having fun. And of course, playing golf. We have a large core of lady vets who turn out each week, often up to 50 or more, and the energy around the

players on the course and in the clubhouse is always big on fun and laughter.

Vets golf is played over 9 holes, and simply turning up is probably the most important part of the competition. You actually

score points just for coming! These points accumulate over time, and before you know it you’ve amassed enough to take your nett score down to single figures, even into negative figures. So your gross score,

minus your handicap, minus your bonus points generates your total. It always looks impressive on paper to score 2 or 3! And there’s often a bit of friendly sledging about who’s got all the points and is most likely to win next. The winner loses all of their bonus points, so it’s bound to be a long time before the next win.

The recent dismal weather has played havoc with our fixtures, with both Saturday 18th and Tuesday 21st May ladies

Hawks’ teen titans

TEENAGE footy at its best was witnessed upon Myall Park on Saturday, 25 May, as the U16 and U13 Myall River Hawks rounded out a day of home-ground victories for the local club.

Playing West Maitland, the U16s took to the field looking almost like seniors.

Drawing a big crowd, both sides put up stiff competition and defence from the start.

West Maitland’s kickers fell short on their first three conversions, costing a precious six points that would haunt them later, especially as the Hawks laid down plenty of plays involving big run breaks and timely hand-offs to bring in

the tries.

West Maitland stuck with the corners, making a few groundings on the wings, resulting from the Hawks' strong central defence.

The final minutes were exhausting.

Spectators could feel the energy on the field change in the epic finale, as West Maitland's desperation to score again was outmatched by the Hawks' defence halting them at halfway, thus sealing the home victory 2818.

The final home game of the day was the U13s vs Cardiff, and the Hawks were strong from the start, scoring the first try within five minutes.

By ten minutes in, the Hawks had three tries.

The Hawks' #2 then made a blistering run up the field, facilitating a fourth try,

before a fifth came in the farleft corner, and a sixth left Cardiff visibly demoralised by half-time.

A flurry of Hawks tries in the second half pushed the score to 44-0, and with ten minutes left, Cardiff came as close as they ever were going

to get to scoring. The Hawks held them back and got it out of there, pelting through the disintegrated Cardiff defence, with Alex Saunders coming around from the wing to ground under the posts twice.

The ‘mercy rule’ was triggered at 60-0, ending the game a few minutes early.

Hawks' try scorers were: Banjo (x2), Ryder (x1), Alex Saunders (x4), Kyzaiah (x1), Darren (x1), and Jaiv (x2).

Seniors Women’s Tackle almost clinched victory away against Waratah at Merewether, holding it for the majority of the match –with each game comes more confidence.

Seniors Men’s against Clarence Town was postponed due to poor ground conditions.
