WED began in 1974, established by the United Nations.

For 2021’s World Environment Day the central theme was ‘Ecosystem Restoration’.

Events were held worldwide to mark the day, although the continued effects of COVID have restricted the amount of activities that could be held.

News Of the Area spoke with the Forest Ecology Alliance to see what was taking place locally for World Environment Day. FEA could be found at Valla Beach Market, where

World Environment Day focuses on protecting ecosystems and koalas

When asked about the theme of ecosystem restoration for the day, the FEA said, “Ecosystem restoration is a great choice!”

Paula Flack, President of the Nambucca Valley Conservation Association,

spoke about ecosystem restoration in reference to the Nambucca Valley.

“As for this year's theme of ecosystem restoration, it goes without saying that this is needed more than ever and in our Nambucca Valley the focus needs to be on recovery and rehabilitation of the forests that were burnt in the 2019/20 bushfires.”

On World Environment Day, Forest Ecology Alliance encouraged community

shows a clear timeline for the dieback of the Norfolk Island Araucarias with two trees being identified as high priority risk.

In September 2020 it was reported that the trees were in a significantly reduced state of health with old axe cuts, and a small amount of epicormic growth.

There were remedial measures recommended to promote epicormic growth (when dormant buds underneath the bark of the tree are stimulated, through stress into new growth).

It is unclear if these works were carried out.

Although the local community feel the area

has been poisoned, and the axe marks to the trees seem to lead in that direction there has been no recent proof that this has occurred.

In an email sent to the Scotts Head Community Group, Mark Martin, Operations Manager for Reflections stated, “The soils in four areas across the reserve have been tested and there is no evidence to suggest soil contamination, poison residue or lack of nutrients are the cause of the trees demise.”

In May 2021 ArborSite reported that one of the pines is dead and earmarked for removal, and the other, while stable at present, is in considerably reduced health, and will be pruned back to eliminate any risk to users of the

The Take The Pledge petition is organised by Cate Faehrmann MLC and her team, and is about working to protect critical habitat for koalas.

According to Ms Faehrmann, who is a Greens MP and the spokesperson for the Environment and Wildlife and Chair of the NSW Parliamentary Inquiry into Koala Populations and

their Habitat, “The number one threat driving koalas to extinction is habitat loss which includes logging in core koala habitat.

“Establishment of a Great Koala National Park would permanently preserve koala habitat which is currently subject to logging while making the mid-north coast a massive drawcard for tourists.”

By Karen GRIBBIN THE Scotts Head community are upset about the proposed removal of WW2 Memorial Trees in the Little Bay area.

News Of The Area spoke with Moira Ryan from Scotts Head Dune Care who stated she first noticed the now dead tree looking poorly about 18 months ago.

Moira said, “Dune Care raised funds to replant, and the community was generous, we planted 100 plants in the area December 2020, and there are very few of those left.”

ShoreTrack program set to change the lives of local young people

Paul Ireland and Jill Ashley, the founders of ShoreTrack were delighted with the level of community support shown and the positive response of the Nambucca Valley community to the ShoreTrack program.

Jill Ashley told News Of The Area, “The Shore track program focuses on providing our local young people who may not be engaged at school with an alternative opportunity to develop employability and trades-based skills, develop their resilience and pathway back to school or to TAFE or employment.”

ShoreTrack is a part of the BackTrack network, which stems from the original youth program founded in Armidale.

The Special Guest Speaker at the Movie Showing was Bernie Shakeshaft.

Bernie is the founder and CEO of BackTrack and the Australian of The Year Local Hero 2020.

Bernie spoke about his journey establishing BackTrack and the huge success of this alternative learning program in turning marginalised young people’s lives around.

The Backtrack website states the organisation has three roles; keeping kids alive, keeping kids out of jail, and helping them chase their hopes and dreams.

The VIP lunch was held at the ShoreTrack shed in the Macksville Industrial Estate and the movie screening at the Nambucca Majestic Cinema.

Attendees included representatives from The Office of Regional Youth, Office of Regional NSW, Local Government, The Department of Education, BackTrack, industry, Rotary, and Regional Development Australia.

This was an opportunity for the community to find out more information pertaining to the ShoreTrack program, network with supporters, sponsors and collaborators as well as meet the young people involved in the ShoreTrack Program and their families.

By Sandra MOON THE LAW Society of New South Wales is encouraging local farmers and small business owners in the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Nambucca and Clarence Valley Local Government Areas (LGAs), who still haven’t resolved legal matters arising from the 201920 bushfires, to talk to their local solicitor about accessing free legal advice.

Under the Commonwealth funded Bushfire Legal Aid Scheme primary producers and small business owners who are ineligible for free legal aid, can ask their private solicitor to apply for funding of two thousand dollars to help resolve legal matters arising from the bushfires and up to five thousand dollars for related expenses.

Co-President of the Coffs Harbour & Clarence River Law Society, Cassandra Banks said legal issues arising from the bushfires can include insurance disputes, commercial leases, contract disputes, banking, planning and employment issues.

However, Ms Banks said, farmers and small business owners in the Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Nambucca and Clarence Valley LGAs need to be aware that, if they are eligible under the scheme, their solicitor must apply for the grants by 30 June 2021.

“If there are farmers and small business owners that are yet to resolve legal issues arising from the bushfires, they should talk to their solicitor about applying for this funding as soon as possible,” she said.

“After that you can't apply so it's important to get in now and get some advice and if there is an issue you can get funding for you can get your application in now,” she said.

“There is the possibility of extensions and a solicitor can make a case to the grants department who will assess on a case by case basis to consider additional funding.

“This process doesn’t involve a lot of red tape and solicitors don’t need to jump through hoops to apply for these grants.

“Solicitors just need to register once via Legal Aid’s Grants Online Portal (if they are not already registered) and then they can apply

for the grants.”

Under the funding eligible businesses or primary producers with more than one bushfire related legal matter can receive more than one approval for legal services and related expenses.

The funding is available for items such as insurance disputes, commercial leases, contract

disputes, planning and building law, local government disputes, entitlements to government grants and schemes, credit and debt, banking, fencing issues, property law and employment law issues for employers.

The funding is in addition to legal assistance already available for individuals after a disaster.

Valley Artist in the Spotlight: Greg Barron

WHEN it comes to writing, local author Greg Barron does it extremely well.

Crime, terrorism, history, international politics and the wide-open spaces of outback Australia are all areas Greg writes about and has a passion for.

Greg has lived in North America, New South Wales and in and around Katherine in the Northern Territory.

He has a soft spot for the top end of Australia and its majestic landscapes.

Greg married his wife Catriona on the banks of the Daly River in the Northern Territory.

“I have enjoyed writing from day one,” he told News Of The Area.

Greg has written three thriller novels and one small e-book for publisher Harper Collins.

The first novel, ‘Rotten Gods’ was long listed for the prestigious Ned Kelly awards and has been lauded as, “One of the most sophisticated geopolitical thrillers ever written.”

ABC Radio interviewer Rob Minshull describes Greg’s second book ‘Savage’ tide as, “Both supremely intelligent and written at breathtaking pace.”

He has also written and self-published one non-fiction historical book and five other novels, all of which can be found on Stories of Oz. With so many of his novels based in exotic places, News Of The Area asked if he did a lot of research for his books. “Yes indeed,” he answered.

“I do like research.

“I remember doing research for ‘Whistlers Bones’ and needed a Scottish accent.

“To get a real feel for the Scottish accent I visited friends Lyn and Stuart, Stuart was Scottish, I just sat there with Stuart and I told him the lines I wanted my character to say and had him say them back to me in his Scottish dialect.”

With the research complete, what are the hardest scenes for Greg to write?

“I think action scenes can be really hard.

“Sometimes it is hard to make them not seem stupid and silly.”

‘Panster’ and ‘Plotter’ are terms used in writing circles to describe an author's writing style. q Local Author Greg Barron does extensive research for all of his novels.

A ‘Plotter’ is a person who sits down and outlines every plot detail of their story, following a carefully structured approach.

A ‘Panster’ is opposite to a plotter, someone who sits down and writes with very little planning, allowing creative inspiration to take over.

When asked if he described himself as a ‘Pantser’ or a ‘Plotter’, Greg replied, “A little bit of both, I do plot and plan first up, I do quite a detailed plan actually, but I always deviate from it.

“By the second draft, I do another plan.

“So, I am really a planner but at times, do go down a different road.”

Greg's most recent release is called ‘The Time of Thunder’ and is set in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Bill Powell to share his clay-making secrets

COASTAL Claymakers Inc is a group of enthusiastic people passionate about anything clay.

The group began 17 years ago.

The Coastal Claymakers group has members ranging from as far south as South West Rocks and as far North as Woolgoolga.

In recent times they have noticed ceramics have experienced an unprecedented up-trend.

Michaela from the group said, “With the community appreciating and enjoying handmade objects, the need for hobby classes to experience the

ancient art outweighs the opportunities on offer.”

TAFE College of Coffs Harbour does provide parttime studies of a Cert IV and a Diploma in Ceramics which is a fabulous opportunity presented for the Mid North Coast clay enthusiasts.

A part of the Coastal Claymakers aim as a group is to bring Australia’s best ceramicists to the Coffs Coast and invite high profile artists to share their knowledge and skills.

They have organised and conducted weekend workshops three times per year.

Michaela told News of the Area, “Gold Coast’s master potter Bill Powell will share his life- long expertise in big pot throwing, sodium silicate finishes and crystalline glazes in a workshop on the 26 and 27 June.

He completed the Fine Arts Diploma at the Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, majoring in ceramics.

He then went on to establish his own studio on the Gold Coast in 1980.

Mr Powell said, “I value true craftsmanship.

THE Newcastle Stand-up Paddle Club (Newcastle SUP Club) will again be hosting the very popular Scotts Head Paddle Games (SHPG) in June.

In its 11th year the games attract all levels of competitors, in both stand up paddle board surfing and racing, with the weekend focusing on participation and fun.

There are approximately 100 competitors registered to attend, some events still have open places, but they are filling fast.

News Of The Week caught up with Dyan Thais, Secretary of the Newcastle SUP Club who said, “We have approximately 100 competitors who have registered to attend, the local event is in its 11th year with competitors travelling from Victoria, Queensland, and NSW.”.

This is a three-day weekend event taking place from Friday 18 to Sunday 20 June.

Entry fee is $90.00 and entries close 11 June.

Celebrating the life of Valla’s Tim ‘the Bream’

By Andrea FERRARI UNIMAGINABLE; a loved one goes off for their day and doesn’t return.

Ever.

It’s a true story that stirs the locals in Valla from the day it happened to the families of Tim ‘the Bream’ March, and his mate Jarrath Hillyer.

In 2019 Tim and Jarrath set off to go sea-fishing in familiar and ordinary circumstances.

And never returned – forsaken to the sea.

Heidi March, Tim’s daughter told News Of The Area, “On Saturday 3 July, 2021 at 10.30am a celebration service will be held at the Nambucca RSL for our Dad.” Jarrath’s ‘send-off’ will happen in his home town in Bombala.

“The decision has been made for the send-off the reason that once the inquest has taken place on the 16th June Dad and Jarrath will be officially declared deceased.

“For us we could not have a send-off for Dad and close his life off with the formalities still

not finalised.

“How do you say goodbye to someone when they are somewhat still existing?

“When you grieve there are no rules but for us this was a process that we both felt was the way to move forward in this process.

“Our Dad was well known around the local area.

“For many things, but especially his genuine character for enjoying having a good time with all walks of life.

“He was a true mate to so many and was always the bloke to offer a helping hand whether it was using his handyman trade skills, giving some kind of direction or having a chat and beer.

“As courageous as he was, he had a soft gentle heart.”

The theme of the send-off is to come along and celebrate Tim’s life.

“Dad loved a party and any excuse to celebrate.

“What happened with Dad and Jarrath is a tragedy.

“However, we do not want a day of mourning.

“We want a day of celebration looking back on the full life Dad has lived.

“He always had a great story to tell and he departed

this earth in his true style doing just that.”

At the RSL family and friends will have his send-off service and then head to the Valla Tavern to celebrate the

Tim ‘the Bream' way.

“We are so warm heartedly grateful for each and every person who has supported us and still continues to support us,” said Heidi.

“This will never be forgotten and will remain close to our hearts forever.

“We would love to thank each and every person in the community that played a part in the search for Dad and Jarrath from people walking the beaches, searching the ocean whether it was on land, in the water or above.

Real estate in high demand, rentals hard to find

REAL estate is in high demand in Nambucca Valley, both in terms of buying and renting.

According to Craig Bellamy from @realty this is an “Australian wide housing phenomena”.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Mr Bellamy said the real estate market has a 17 year cycle.

“Last time was in 20022003,” said Mr Bellamy.

“Prices doubled across a 2 year period.”

There is a key difference this time as interest rates are at an all time low.

Mr Bellamy said, “According to figures 300,000 people have moved into regional areas.

“There is not much stock.

“It comes in and goes pretty quick.

“Places are selling in a couple of days because there is a fear of missing out,” he said.

News Of The Area spoke with David Winton from Nambucca Valley Property who said that property sales are moving quickly.

Mr Winton stated that a range of people are buying and moving into the Valley.

When asked if Nambucca Valley Property had found it was new residents from the cities who were coming in and snapping up local property, Mr Winton said, “It is a bit of everything, locals trading on up or down, people coming from built up areas. It’s a mix.”

The amount of available rental properties are at an

all time low.

Mr Winton said they have low rental stock at the moment, and a couple of weeks ago they had nothing.

When agents do have rentals available they are snapped up quickly, receiving large numbers of applications.

“With over 20 years working in the Valley, we have never seen it like this,” commented Mr Bellamy from @realty.

Mr Bellamy mentioned that AirBnB had reduced the amount of long term rental properties out of the marketplace.

Speaking with News Of The Area, Mr Bellamy expressed his frustrations in relation to the current real estate climate.

“It’s upsetting for us as agents when there are people under so much stress with lack of affordable housing, both for buyers and renters.”

Dine and Discovery Vouchers extended

THE Dine and Discover initiative has been one of the financial stimulus packages the hospitality and travel industries needed post COVID-19 lockdowns.

And now, the NSW government has released some fabulous news!

This program has been extended, meaning the vouchers will be valid until July 31.

If you are a resident of NSW and are over the age of eighteen, you are eligible to apply for 2 x $25.00 Dine vouchers and 2 x $25.00 Discovery vouchers from Services NSW. You can use your vouchers at all participating venues any day of the week the venue is open.

The challenges of learning from home

FOR periods of this and last year, schools around the Nambucca Valley experienced lockdowns, including during the brief period of flooding affecting the area in March and the extensive Covid-19 enforced lockdown over the course of two months last year.

In order for schoolwork and classes to be maintained,

locked down school students had to turn to online learning as the sole prospect of keeping their learning on track.

I spoke to Year 12 student Tracy Nguyen about her experiences with at-home and online learning.

“During COVID and the floods, I made sure to attend my normal classes online and had breaks when I needed, although I felt more distracted learning online as I was in an environment that didn't have

any teachers making sure I was doing set class work,” said Year 12 Nambucca Valley student Tracy Nguyen.

At some schools around the Valley, Google Classroom was a reliable resource for students to keep track of what they learned for each subject in each period at home.

There, school work can be posted for students to see so they know what they’re supposed to be working on for a class, either collaboratively

or individually.

If teachers wanted to conduct a lesson they would use Google Meet, a format that allows people to interact with each other remotely, in class cases, teachers would use it to get in contact with students to conduct lessons.

Zoom was another platform used for online learning.

It’s similar to Meet in the way it's used, however the difference is that Zoom was

a government initiative to improve digital literacy, has created significant value for people in its target age group.

Be Connected is an Australian Government

initiative aimed at engaging people over the age of fifty to improve their digital skills and gain confidence online.

Between 2016 and February 2020, the total

number of people engaged by the program rose to over 880,000, which is more than double the anticipated amount.

The Swinburne report also found the program boosted social connection creating a social return on investment of $4.01 for every $1 invested.

The results have been made possible by the three thousand plus Be Connected network partners all over Australia, who deliver the program.

New South Wales alone has approximately one thousand community organisations which have engaged older Australians, spanning a diverse range of cultural and educational

Nambucca Valley Writers Group hold AGM

THE Nambucca Valley Writers Group (NVWG) celebrated another year of writing excellence, holding their Annual General Meeting on 22 May. President Roby Akin delivered her report on the group’s endeavours over the past 12 months, which included withstanding venue changes due to Covid-19, seeing the group move to Zoom meetings and then to the Nambucca Leagues Club.

Roby Akin who has been a member for the past 23 years stood down from nominations this year for a well-earned rest.

member for at least 23 years, and filled most committee positions at some stage.”

The 2021/22 NVWG Committee is President Yvonne Kachel, Vice President Elizabeth Newman, Secretary Karen Gribbin, Treasurer Bill Ridley, and Committee Consultant Roby Aiken.

The group have a busy year ahead with an anthology to be launched in 2021, and conducting workshops both inhouse and to the wider community.

Members will be traveling to Byron Bay for the Writers Festival in August.

This year will see the group mixing the trip with workshops, festival events,

and personal writing projects.

The group has approximately 20 members, and new members are always welcome.

Meetings are held on the fourth Saturday of the month with lunch at 12:30 pm, and the meeting at 1:30 pm.

“The lunch is optional, otherwise the meeting starts at 1:30 pm,” said Roby.

Meetings are held at the Nambucca Leagues Club, 24 Short Street, Nambucca Heads.

Late deliveries not your newsagent’s fault

RECENTLY distribution arrangements for newspapers and magazines have changed for local newsagents, resulting in some late and incorrect deliveries.

It is believed, these distribution arrangements have been altered by newspaper publishers and magazine distributors, not by your local newsagent.

This problem started approximately three weeks ago.

According to Ian Booth, CEO of Newsagents Association of NSW and ACT, this means that newspapers now being delivered to newsagents from Taree up to Queensland have an altered delivery pattern.

"The delivering contractor delivering the papers also changed.

"This has had an impact on the delivery times to newsagents of their newspapers and magazines.

Mr Booth said of the new delivery contractors involved, “It would appear to us they are not as experienced as

they should be.”

Some of the problems experienced by the newsagencies, according to Mr Booth, were quite dramatic.

These included missing titles and short deliveries of papers.

Mr Booth says that there were, “Reports of members being dramatically affected.

“News Corp has been provided with an extensive array of information highlighting the problems experienced by newsagents.”

Newsagency, has been impacted by the change.

There was, according to Mr Kimber, “Poor communication and consultation.”

Mr Kimber confirmed on the first day of the new delivery service the newspaper and magazines were two hours late.

Mr Kimber said that the delivery service has since improved, but is still later than what it used to be.

Mr Kimber states that he “has to give credit to the logistics lady from News Corp who was very good

at trying to work out the problems”.

One change that has made a big difference to Mr Kimber is that the newspapers now come wrapped which saves him some time.

Shirley Walsh, of Macksville Newsagents, when asked if she is still experiencing problems said, “Plenty of them, there are still problems with the magazines, we are short on them.”

According to Ms Walsh, the fact that newsagents don’t have access to delivery

drivers' contact details makes it impossible to contact them if there is an error.

Ms Walsh also commented that, “The places that get their newspapers and magazines from us, such as Scotts Heads, are even more affected.

“If we get them late then they get them even later.”

News Of The Area contacted News Corp for comment but did not receive a response before publication.

Two Macksville Lions recognised for service

TWO long serving Macksville Lions’ Club members have been honoured at a Lions formal dinner at the Macksville Ex-Service Club.

The dinner was attended

by Lions Club members from Lions’ District 201N1.

The district covers a large area in NSW from Yamba on the coast, west to Wee Waa and south to Nabiac.

The awards were presented by Lions’ District Governor Kevin Thornton and the evening was part of a weekend of management meetings held by Lions.

The visitors were able to visit and enjoy local attractions, including Perry’s Lemon Myrtle Farm and the Pub With No Beer.

Lion Brian Hemsworth received a James D Richardson Honour Award for his many years coordinating the Lions’ Youth of the Year program in the 201N1 Lions’ District.

The award is named after James (Jim) D Richardson BEM (1910-1987).

Jim Richardson was one of the most beloved and respected members of

Lions in the formative years of the Association in Australia and in 1958 was the first Australian to serve on the Lions’ International Board.

Lion Lorraine Hemsworth’s service was also recognised with a Helen Keller Award for her years of service on the District Cabinet as the Secretary and Assistant Secretary.

Lorraine has also held lead roles in the Lions’ Youth Exchange Program which facilitates young Australians travelling overseas for up to four weeks and for overseas

youth being hosted by Australian families for a similar period.

The Helen Keller Award is presented by the Australian Lions Hearing Dogs foundation (AHDF) and recognises those who have greatly contributed to the organisation over a number of years.

At the dinner the Macksville President Lion Cathie Vine, presented a cheque for $1000 to the AHDF, the profits of raffles run over the Christmas period at Scotts Head.

Since 1980 the AHDF has provided over 600 assistance dogs to hearing impaired Australians and the program has now been extended to provide diabetes alert dogs.

Brian and Lorraine Hemsworth have hosted dozens of youths from many countries through the youth exchange program.

They have both served as the Macksville Lions Club President as well as holding other roles at club level.

The couple are also long serving employees of the Nambucca Shire Council and it

was fitting that Mayor Rhonda Hoban OAM, was the guest of honour at the dinner and witnessed the presentations.

Mayor Hoban is a staunch supporter of the four Lions Clubs in the Nambucca Local Government Area, and she welcomed the visitors to the Valley and gave an excellent keynote address to the dinner.

The Macksville Ex-Service Club showcased the excellent cuisine available in the region and the Lions returned to their home clubs full of praise about the dinner and their time in the valley.

Lions Park Hit Again By Vandals ON the morning of Monday 7 May work began on the installation of new lions at the Lions Park at Nambucca Headlands.

As Luke and Rachel McGregor-Allen, reporter for News Of The Area, pulled into the carpark they noticed that the remaining lion and the stand, a large rock, closest to the carpark had been pulled over onto the side.

In last week's edition of News Of the Area, Rachel reported on the lion that was stolen from the park in a story titled ‘Lion stolen from Lions Park.’

Now it’s partner had also been disturbed.

Don Parveez, from the Lions Club, was also at the lookout, “I was just here yesterday and the lion was not distrubed then,” he said.

“They must have done it

overnight.”

When examining the lion now lying on its side Mr McGregor-Allen commented,”They have tried to take away this lion too, you can see from the underside where they have chipped away at the adhesive.

“You can also see where they have tied a chain and sling around the lion and tried to pull it out.”

This time the thieves were not as successful and the lion was left lying.

The plan was that these two lions, that form the entrance to the walkway down to the whale watching platform, would be fixed on Monday 7 June.

Owing to the damage, this plan had to be postponed.

However, two new concrete lions were installed successfully on Monday close to the whale watching platform by Mr McGregorAllen on concrete blocks.

It is a magnificent view, and when the vandalised lions are put back into place let’s all hope that they can remain undisturbed and ready to greet visitors as they walk down to the platform.

Claim on estate after 30 year estrangement RAY and his wife adopt a child named Edward, who is 6 months old.

When Edward is 14 years old, Ray and his wife separate.

Ray’s relationship with Edward diminishes from minimal to non-existent contact until Ray passes away, 30 years later.

Edward discovers that Ray made a Will, leaving the whole of his estate to charity. Ray’s estate is valued at $600,000.

Edward makes a family provision claim against Ray’s estate, seeking half of Ray’s estate.

The Court notes that an adopted child is eligible to make a claim.

In defence of Edward’s claim, it is submitted to the Court that Edward never attempted to maintain a meaningful relationship with Ray and that he bore some responsibility for the poor state of the relationship.

An examination of Edward’s financial circumstances, reveals that he owns a home with only a small mortgage owing on the property, earns $100,000 per year, has $200,000 in superannuation, $50,000 in savings and no dependents.

The defence argues that Edward does not have sufficient financial needs to warrant the making of an order of anything more than enough to pay out his mortgage of $60,000.

The Court also hears that during his lifetime, Ray performed volunteer work for the charity and donated regularly, and on this basis accepts that it was understandable for Ray to leave the whole of his estate to the charity.

Nonetheless, the Court also accepts that despite an estrangement of some 30 years, in the circumstances, Edward had a moral claim on Ray’s estate.

Ultimately, the Court makes an order that Edward receive the sum of $160,000 from Ray’s estate and that the estate pay the bulk of his legal costs.

Milestone Birthday for CWA member DEAR News Of The Area, WE celebrated a milestone birthday at our meeting when one of our lovely long serving ladies reached 80 years.

Despite her many handicaps she has been generous with her time, with her skill of crocheting hand towels tops and knitting .

Our Craft stall at the Plaza is well stocked with hats for children and coat hangers once more.

Meeting many of our regulars again has been interesting hearing of the COVID lockdown stories.

Many members have relatives on the land and are finding the devastation of the mice

plague very distressing.

As yet CWA has not printed a recipe for mice pie!

Or mice stew for the colder days.

Bingo was well supported and we look forward to the 6 July Bingo, a time to keep warm with a warm drink, and enjoy having some fun.

The CWA Group Council day plans are almost completed and Nambucca will welcome many CWA members from the Mid North Coast area.

At face value, I can see your point. You have given the clothes to your friend out of the goodness of your heart, and you would expect that little Timmy would be happy to receive the Ninja Turtle singlet and Samantha would be thrilled with those faux leather boots, but alas they are now there for the world to see, along with a catchy sales pitch: 'Vintage singlet and vegan boots in great used condition' which is certainly not the description you would have given them.

The thing is, Elizabeth, there is actually zero monetary advantage in selling secondhand clothes to social media communities. I tell you, those people are savvier than any nanna at a Garage Sale. They are as cunning as Victor Lustig (Google him). As relentless as rodents. As tight as a fish's . . . you get the idea.

I discovered this the hard way when I tried to sell my seven-year-old son's soccer boots.

They were in immaculate condition because, let's be honest, he spent half the season on the bench and even when on the field he wasn't too keen on getting his boots scuffed. They cost me $100, so I put them on the local marketplace site for $10, complete with photos from various angles and a detailed sizing chart with European conversions. That probably took me about half an hour, so I was already on slavelabour rates. Well, then the queries started.

Would I accept $5? Ah, no. Would I drive the boots to the purchaser who lived half an hour away? Nope. Would I arrange for free postage (which would be more than the asking price)?

Negative. Would I take some more pictures including one of the shoe next to a ruler? Nein, du nerviger Dummkopf. Trying to sell that one pair of soccer boots became a full-time job. I had to take annual leave to keep up with the enquiries.

I never sold those boots, Elizabeth. They are still in the wardrobe. My son is now sixteen and playing rugby. His feet have grown another ten centimetres. The boots are still listed on the site, waiting patiently for someone to pay me a measly ten bucks so I can put it towards the therapy surrounding my lacklustre sales career.

So, the point is, let your friend try to sell those items. She will be burdened by the tactics of people who do this for a living. They grind you down until you end up offering to pay them just so they'll shut up and take the goods off your hands.

New consent curriculum for schools A NEW consent package is being developed for NSW schools, focusing on support for teachers and engagement with parents.

NSW Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell announced the new suite of initiatives on Sunday 30 May as the first major step following the Statement of Intent signed by all three school sectors earlier this year.

“This government has made very clear its intentions to work with the community to combat sexual violence,”

Ms Mitchell said.

“Schools play an important role, side by side with parents, to instil the values in our students and children on what is acceptable behaviour and how to foster respectful relationships.

“To support teaching of respectful relationships, a new range of curriculumaligned teaching and learning resources – aligned with the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) curriculum – will be created for teachers.”

Ms Mitchell said the

resources will be available on the Department of Education’s Learning Resources Hub. “They will be quality assured and produced by subject-matter experts,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Our consent curriculum content in the PDHPE curriculum is the strongest in Australia and these resources will ensure teachers can deliver it in the best way possible.”

The resources will include lesson sequences and stage-appropriate teaching

activities that teachers can use or adapt to assist them in the classroom.

“We will be able to monitor the uptake of these resources to know which ones are being used most in schools and where more support is needed,” Ms Mitchell said.

The Department of Education has also partnered with the Federation of Parents and Citizens Associations of NSW and, as a first step, will hold the first webinar for all public school P&Cs this month.

The webinar will be an opportunity for P&C members to find out more about the Statement of Intent, what students currently learn through the curriculum, and how parents and carers can stay engaged in the discussion.

“Parents are partners in their child’s education,” Ms Mitchell said.

“I want to know they have everything they need to have these important conversations with their children.”

In Term 3, the Department

will also invite P&C members and other representative parent groups to participate in a survey.

“Through the survey, we will learn more about parents’ current understanding of consent education and the kind of supports they would find helpful in our collective effort to help young people build healthy and respectful relationships,” Ms Mitchell said.

The resources will be available to all teachers in the coming school term.

Parents will receive more information on the webinar and survey via their P&C or local school.

2. On 29/5/21 at about 9:15pm, Police stopped a vehicle in Mann St, Nambucca Heads for the purpose of an RBT. Checks on the 21 year old male driver revealed he was a disqualified driver and in breach of bail conditions.

The accused man was issued a Court Attendance Notice to appear before Macksville Local Court on 10/6/21.

3. On 3/6/21 at about 3pm, Police were alerted to a family dispute at a Macksville address where a 44 year old woman had

been assaulted.

A 13 year old female youth was arrested at the scene and later charged at Macksville Police Station.

The young person was released on bail to appear before Macksville Children’s Court on 10/6/21.

4. On 2/6/21 at about 11:35pm, Police were alerted to a family dispute at a Nambucca Heads address where a 65 year old man had been assaulted and sustained head injuries.

A 42 year old man was arrested at the scene and

later charged at Kempsey Police Station.

The accused man was refused bail to appear before Kempsey Local Court on 7/6/21.

5. On 2/6/21 at about 2:50pm, Police arrested a 24 year old man at a Nambucca Heads address for breaching an AVO. The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station where he was later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 24/6/21.

6. On 2/6/21, Police arrested a 46 year old man at

a Macksville address following investigations related to a domestic violence assault upon a 47 year old woman who had sustained a minor leg injury.

The accused man was charged at Macksville Police Station and was later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 10/6/21.

7. On 1/6/21 at about 9:00am, Police arrested a 33 year old woman at a Nambucca Heads address for breaching an AVO. The accused woman was charged at Macksville

Police Station and was later released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 24/6/21.

8. On 25/5/21 at about 1:45pm in Nambucca Heads, Police issued a 29 year old male driver with an Infringement Notice for driving an unregistered vehicle.

Checks on the driver revealed he had never held a drivers licence and he was issued with a Court Attendance Notice to appear before Macksville Local Court on 10/6/21.

1. On 2/6/21 at about 8:00am, Police arrested a 46 year old woman at a Kalang address following investigations related to a neighbour dispute in which alleged shots were fired.

Police seized a firearm during a search of the premises.

The accused woman was charged at Macksville Police Station with firearm offences and stalk/intimidate.

The accused woman was released on bail to appear before Macksville Local Court on 8/7/21.

EPA Redeployed to Clear Floodwater Debris in Nambucca River

AFTER the initial clear up, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has visited the Nambucca River again to remove further debris left from recent flooding.

The EPA was responding to reports that flood debris remained in the Nambucca River post clean up.

The nature of the debris, according to an EPA spokesperson, was namely damaged and destroyed oyster leases.

“Last week our contractor was redeployed after reports of further flood debris remaining in the Nambucca River.

“Some oyster farmers were having difficulty

removing damaged leases.

“The EPA returned with the contractor to remove the leases and associated debris,” the spokesperson said.

The clean up occurred last week and the EPA organised for skip bins to be available for the removal of lease debris that could not be re-used.

“There has been a large variety of debris collected to date,” said the spokesperson.

“Oyster infrastructure including large plastic blue barrels, piping and rack components have been some of the most prominent debris collected in the area.”

The EPA told News Of The Area they appreciate community reports of flood debris in local rivers

and waterways to the Environment Line on 131 555 or info@epa.nsw.gov.au.

The EPA spokesperson said the Nambucca River has continued to be monitored for further flood debris.

Following the major flooding this year, Oysters NSW acknowledged on their website that, “Oyster growing equipment is expensive, and the recovery of lost gear is essential to enable the industry to rebuild following this latest disaster.”

They also encourage anyone in the community who comes across anything they suspect as oyster growing gear to follow the regional advice so the gear can be returned to its rightful owner.

However the website states that for the Nambucca region, the drop off point for oyster gear is yet to be confirmed.

We have been blessed by some great weather coming into the start of Winter, but the high tides have wreaked some havoc over the course, with saltwater entering the fairways through the recently unblocked drainage systems.

There have been stories of stranded patrons and staff in the Clubhouse when the access causeway “went under” on numerous occasions – our courtesy bus became stranded on the centre hump for a few hours - the joy of being on an Island.

Macksville Stingers Div 3 Men take win

WE may not bite, but boy do we sting.

The Macksville Men’s division 3 team came away with a win on the weekend against the inform Northern Storm with a score of 3-0.

Macksville played like it was their final game with one of the many standout players like Connor Ford, who as right wing showed absolute brilliance with a run of almost 40m before passing the ball to team captain Brodie Bartlett who scored.

Connor’s efforts were impressive because he

was playing with two sore ankles.

In what could be touted as the grudge match of the season, Macksville player Mark Robinson showed his brilliance as a player by attempting to score four times during the entire game.

His football skills and prowess helped players like Allen Machin and Tim Brown set up another goal for Brodie to score the team's second goal of the match.

The Stingers dominated possession of the ball and the first half of the game saw them outrun and outmanoeuvre the Storm.

A late surge by Aiden Laird almost resulted in another goal for the Stingers but the full time whistle beat them.

Strikers defeated but the future is still very bright

By David WIGLEY THE Nambucca Strikers were defeated 6-1 by the Coffs United Lionesses last Saturday in the women’s second division.

For Club coach Rhys Jones, development is the most important priority as he provided his assessment of the match to News Of The Area.

“A competitive game of football was expected as the Lionesses are a skilled and well drilled outfit and Nambucca have a never say die attitude, it was always going to be a big ask for the very inexperienced Nambucca team.

“Nambucca were slow starters and allowed the Lionesses an early

breakthrough with a well constructed goal from the right hand side.

“Normally teams with similar experience would drop their head, however this Strikers team is very different, they consolidated and started to compete and challenge every ball.

“With Coffs’ short sharp possession game and Nambucca's persistent pressure you wondered who would crack first, then in the 30th minute a great through ball split Nambucca defence and Coffs scored 2-0, the score remained the same until half time.

“Simone Jordon and Tash Brittian battled everywhere on the field.”

Rhys said that the Strikers side had shown tremendous improvement throughout the

season.

“Progress has exceeded all expectations, the team led by Kyesha Cohen are learning all the time and experience is a valued commodity in football and this team is gaining that very quickly, combined with their competitive never say die attitude a bright future is definitely in store for this group of ladies,” said Rhys.

The Nambucca Strikers will host the Orara Valley Dingoes in the women’s second division on Saturday 12 June at 1pm at Coronation Park, Nambucca.

Bowls Returning to Nambucca Bowls Club

THE Nambucca Bowls Club underwent a major greens renovation project in early March to replace the old synthetic greens with a new superior needle punch product.

The project commenced in early March but was unfortunately seriously impacted by the flooding event that occurred throughout the region on

19 March.

As a result, the bases of the greens were severely damaged and have been rendered unfit to play on for some months now.

Work recommenced on one of the bowling greens a couple of weeks ago and bowlers will be able to participate in bowls this Friday.

THE Nambucca Valley Lions hosted the Lismore Swans on Saturday 5 June.

It’s Lismore's first season in the Mid North Coast AFL division, and have already proven to be an impressive side to watch, travelling to Nambucca with four wins under their belts.

There are myriad ways to ring in the weekend, but unless you are tuning into Gardening Australia with a vino in hand, you are probably doing it the wrong way. Is there anything more life affirming and relaxing than learning about nature with a group of can-do folk from the comfort of your couch – or bed? Not really.

Anchored by Costa Georgiadis, this long-running series is a lesson in finding joy and purpose with nature, and it’s all very laidback. Tonight, Costa meets city gardeners who are utilising the street.

Handsome and oozing charisma, Rob Lowe leads the cast of this ostentatious and cheesy procedural disaster drama. Arguably one of the most underrated actors of his generation, many will find it difficult to forget his goofball role on cult satire Parks and Recreation, but his turn here as Owen, a perfectionist Manhattan firefighter relocated to Texas, is unique and entertaining – often accidentally. Season two kicks off tonight, with the coronavirus pandemic embedded into the narrative.

But a global health crisis still has nothing on the series’ overthe-top emergencies.

Sadly, female lead Liv Tyler doesn’t return, but excitement awaits with a 9-1-1 crossover in two weeks.

NAMBUCCA Heads Squash Club served up matches for all ages in round two of the Wednesday night competition.

Club President Bruce Graham served up against eleven year old Dylan who is 56 years younger than his 67 year old opponent from Nambucca Heads.

It was a game of contrasting styles as Dylan scurried around the court chasing everything that moved, favouring

low shots whereas Bruce was conservative in his movements and preferred the high shots.

Nambucca Heads Squash Club has a rich history of developing junior social players and it’s the family atmosphere that greases the wheels as Bruce explained to News Of The Area.

“Squash is for all ages, it doesn’t matter how old or experienced you are, it’s good exercise and fun.

“Over the years we’ve had players compete at state level and national level.
