By Rachel MCGREGORALLEN NAIDOC Week celebrations began early at Bowraville Central School, with a well organised and heartfelt event on Monday 21 June 2021.

The impacts of COVID-19 were felt last year and NAIDOC celebrations had to be restricted.

Bowraville Central School Principal David Taylor told News Of The Area, “Last year we did put something on but we were not able to invite the community which is a big part of it.

“We had a flag raising ceremony and assembly but no parents, no community.

“Which is why we wanted the whole community to come in today to celebrate with us.

“So St Mary’s, the pre-school, and Bowraville Central school are all

There was an attempted break-in at tobacco shop TSG Nambucca Heads just after 4.30am on Monday, in which a window was smashed but nothing was stolen, while Nourish Cafe & Grocer in Valla Beach was broken into just after 1am on Tuesday, June 15, and Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club was broken into about 12.30am on Wednesday, June 16, according to representatives of the businesses.

Nourish Cafe & Grocer owner Kat Honor said CCTV footage capturing two people breaking in had been handed over to the police, and that the intruders had taken the cash trays from the till, an iPad and all of the store’s tobacco products.

“They forced the side doors.

“They’re double doors with deadlocks but they really went at them,” she said, adding that she is now installing additional locks, security lighting and cameras.

Honor said break-ins in Valla were “unusual” but that her business had been targeted in the past.

“We’re all good, we just try and get on with it. It’s frustrating but it’s part of life, I guess.

“There’s always someone who wants to take the easy way.”

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club manager Johnathon Zirkler said CCTV footage had captured two people breaking into the venue

and that he’d arrived after a security alarm was triggered to find a Keno machine on the floor.

“They did more damage to the Keno machine and the door than what they took,” he said, adding that the intruders had taken about 10 bottles of alcohol but “dropped most of them as they were trying to get out”.

“They’re not really trying to achieve much, they’re just doing it,” he said.

Nambucca Valley Police acting inspector Anthony Smith said investigations were continuing and it was “unhelpful” to speculate at this stage on whether the cases were linked.

Dispelling rumours of a break-in at a residential property in Valla Beach within the same period,

As of the time of this issue going to print, Smith said no further break-ins of a similar nature had been reported in Nambucca Heads or Valla Beach.

“Since the 16th, things have gone very quiet,” he said.

St Mary’s Primary School Principal Warren Niethe, shared with News Of The Area that this was the first time that the Bowraville schools have joined together to celebrate NAIDOC Week in one school.

Principal Niethe explained that the aim of bringing the schools together and inviting the whole community along was, “To make it broader so that everyone in the community comes together.

“It is great.

“We want to make sure it is a community event.

“The concept of the community coming together is an important one.”

Mark Smith, a language revitalisation teacher from St Mary’s Primary School shared some history and explained the importance of NAIDOC day to him.

“This was a segregated town.

“So language revitalisation is very important to me.

“Without the three things: language, land and people we lose our identity.

“So it is all about identity.

“It is like a tripod, so that we are standing nice and steady and still.

“It was a segregated town unfortunately, but things have gotten better now and it is a fantastic day.

Local actor to tread the boards in new Australian comedy NAMBUCCA local Annamarie Cohen is about to take to the stage at the Jetty Memorial Theatre in Coffs Harbour in the role of Zelda in a new Australian comedy called ‘In Bed with the Bishops’.

Written by Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Monash University Rob Selzer the play has only been performed three times since it was written in 2019 and will be put on this time

This marks Annamarie’s second foray into local theatre in Coffs Harbour, having previously been in the ensemble for Coffs Harbour Musical Comedy Companies (CHMCC) production of ‘South Pacific’ in 2019.

‘Bishops’ is the story of Dr Jack Glass, a couples therapy psychiatrist who is attempting to help power couple Betty and Barry Bishop conceive a baby,

Jack’s story of his experiences with the Bishops develops until it catches up with the present, and we get to see how the

whole complex situation comes to a climax.

Assumptions, manipulation, secrets, unethical behaviour, and a messy divorce among other things all combine to drive Dr Glass to distraction as he tries to come to terms with Betty Bishop’s power persona and attempts to

help her achieve her goal of having a baby.

A thank you day held for first responders

SUNDAY June 20 was the day the Macksville Country Club gave back to the region's first responders.

Desma Hughes, a Board Member at the Macksville Country Club, searches high and low for any grants the Club can apply for that might be beneficial to the Nambucca Valley community.

When a grant through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements – (known as DRFABushfire Community resilience fund) became available the first thought that came to her mind was the first responders in the area.

The Nambucca Valley has taken its fair share of hard knocks over the past eighteen months.

Drought, bushfires, a pandemic and a flood have all decided to pay the Nambucca Valley a visit.

Desma and the Board of the Macksville Country Club wanted to show thanks and appreciation on behalf of the Nambucca Valley community to the first responders, so they immediately applied for the grant.

It was a lengthy process with a lot of volunteer time going into the drafting of the application and the setting out a plan of the projected event.

The grant was successful!

It was then time for the Club to start the ball rolling on this special event of thanks for these amazing people.

“We sent letters to all first responders in the area that we knew had a helping hand in the bushfires.

“These people were from the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, First Responders Network, Ambulance and Police.

“They were all invited to the special day we had planned as a way the community could thank them

for their help and contributions,” Desma told News Of The Area.

The event started at 9:00am on Sunday morning.

All special guests and their families had access to games of golf, golf buggies, golf clubs, tees and any other equipment they needed.

They also had full access to the bowling green.

“There were some people who have never had a game of bowls before,” Desma said.

A barbeque lunch with delicious side salads was served as well as a choice of two alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverages for the adults.

This was followed by tea, coffee and a decadent range of sweets.

“Everyone was so thankful and felt looked after,” Desma said.

“It was so great to see them having a wonderful time.”

The day had no time limit, all guests were welcome to stay as long as they liked, playing as many games of golf or bowls as they wished to

COVID-19 vaccine update AS at 15 June, more than 109,000 vaccine doses have been administered across the Healthy North Coast footprint, which covers from Tweed Heads to Port Macquarie and inland.

Planning is underway to increase the number of

The local CVC in our region is at Nambucca Heads.

Additionally, 20 local general practices are due to begin administering the Pfizer vaccine from 5 July, with a further 10

commencing on 12 July.

More practices are expected to be onboarded from 19 July.

Community consultation on vaccines SIXTY per cent of North Coast residents who responded to a community consultation on COVID-19 vaccination either plan to be vaccinated or have been already.

A further 18% said they would probably have the vaccine, 10% said they probably wouldn’t and 12% rejected the idea of COVID-19 vaccination.

Healthy North Coast, which delivers the Australian Government’s PHN program from Tweed Heads to Port Macquarie and inland,

partnered with 89 Degrees East to develop the short online survey.

It ran from 14 April to 15 May 2021 and attracted more than 1,000 respondents.

Healthy North Coast CEO, Julie Sturgess, thanked all participants for sharing their thoughts and feedback.

“These responses from across the community help us to understand local sentiment, what people are thinking and how we can best serve their needs,” Ms Sturgess said.

“We’re interested in people’s views on vaccination and we’re carefully studying the feedback we’ve received, to help shape the local rollout of the vaccine program.

“In the meantime, Healthy North Coast will continue to support our primary health carers and the community to stay COVID-safe right across the region.’

Key findings from the survey include: • 22% of 35–44-yearolds say they would ‘definitely not’ get the COVID-19 vaccine

• healthcare workers are more likely to be ‘vaccine champions’ (43%), as are over 65s • The local government areas of Byron, Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour, Lismore and Port Macquarie-Hastings indicated strong support for getting a COVID-19 vaccine, with more than 60% of respondents saying they had had a vaccine already or were definitely intending to.

The survey found 56% of people who support vaccination intend to get the jab when the vaccine is available to them.

This compares to 42% from a national survey in April.

Ms Sturgess said it was understandable there was a level of vaccine hesitancy.

She said Healthy North

Coast would continue to provide the community with evidence-based information and guidance while supporting the Australian Government’s national vaccine rollout.

“As we look to analyse and understand the survey results with other health sector partners, we expect to provide additional information on the findings and how they can help us tailor our approach to local communication, resourcing and engagement,” she said.

Cutting energy costs for motel in Macksville FEDERAL Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan says five motels across the electorate have successfully applied for Government funding under the Hotel Energy Uplift Program, including the Mandarin Motel, Macksville.

The five businesses are part of 440 hotels, motels and serviced apartment facilities across Australia to be awarded grants of up to $25,000 to undertake energy savings projects under the $10.2 million program.

Mr Conaghan says the energy-saving works will help reduce costs.

“This will help lower their energy bills by upgrading to more energy efficient airconditioning, refrigeration and equipment, improving the building through double glazing and insulation, carrying out energy audits or installing energy monitoring equipment,” Mr Conaghan said.

“The five facilities are, Zebra Motel, Coffs Harbour - $25,000 for air conditioning upgrades; Toreador Motel, Coffs Harbour - $25,000 for hot water system upgrades; Mandarin Motel, Macksville, $24,775 to install new solar hot water heaters and split system air conditioners; Beaches Holiday Resort, Port Macquarie - $25,000 for lighting and ventilation efficiency works; and, Rockpool Motor Inn, South West Rocks - $11,700 for energy efficient air conditioners.

The documentary by Mid North Coast veteran talents, Peter Geddes, former journalist and Bellingen resident in the ‘70s, and Pete Gailey, life-time film editor, was hosted by Pete, joined by Fiona Perry from Bowraville Theatre.

It's a gem of a film sharing the untold story of Bellingen’s hippie history and the conflicts with the town’s residents during the 1970s and ‘80s.

Scotts Head Reserve struggles

THE historic Norfolk Island Pines that crest the ridge above Little Beach are in decline.

Although not indigenous to Australia the stand of trees is estimated to be 50 – 80 years old.

Originally planted as a memorial to locals who gave their lives in WW2 the trees are emotionally connected to the Scotts Head community.

The pines are mentioned in Buz Brazel’s book ‘Scotts Head As Good As it Gets –

Two of the pines are in a critical condition with one being earmarked for removal and the other to be severely pruned back as reported by arborists, ArborSite.

As a follow up on our original story about the pines, News Of The Area took a walk with Moira Ryan, a member of Dune Care and Scotts Head Community Group, up to the headland to look at the two pines in question and the surrounding coastal area.

Poison has been suggested within the community as a reason for the decline of the pines, however Mark Martin,

Reflections Operational Manager, stated in an email that soil samples from the site came back negative to poison.

Moira said that many poisons are residual and any testing would rely on the timeframe between the event and when the testing took place.

The trees have been roped off from the public.

Pines on each side of the damaged trees are still in good health, some with lower branch damage that locals say could be attributed to pedestrian traffic.

“Our volunteers replanted the head land area with natural vegetation and mulched both pines, but they’ve all since died, the whole Reserve is struggling,” said Moira.

Rescue and Education Program ON Thursday 18 June News Of The Area visited Bowraville Central School to see the Rescue and Education Program running for the first time.

The session was attended by senior students.

Bowraville Fire and Rescue NSW, Nambucca Valley Police, and Nambucca Valley Highway Patrol guided the session for the students.

Max Duncan, Station Commander at Bowraville Fire and Rescue NSW, said the session was, “About our young drivers and passengers understanding risk on the road and that there are consequences for their actions.

“There is a tendency to think it is never going to happen to me,” Acting Inspector Anthony Smith, from Nambucca Valley Police

told the students.

Highway patrol spoke about the thousands of stories that could be shared about the trauma and impact of road accidents on families, communities, and first responders.

The five major behaviours that cause car accidents were shared with the students.

These are speeding, fatigue, driving under the influence (both alcohol and/ or drugs), driving distractions such as mobile phones, and non-compliance with seat belts.

The emergency services staff encouraged the young people to think about the consequences of their actions.

Regional Seniors Travel Card extended

MORE than 300,000 seniors in the regions will benefit from reduced travel costs with the NSW Government committing $246 million to extend the Regional Seniors Travel Card for an additional two years.

The Regional Seniors Travel Card is a $250 prepaid Visa card designed to ease the burden of travel costs for eligible seniors in rural, regional and remote areas.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said seniors across NSW have benefited from the initial two-year travel card trial, with 337,500 cards issued in 2020 and more than 330,000 cards issued to regional seniors in 2021 so far.

“Living in regional NSW is rewarding in so many ways, but every day we struggle with the tyranny of distance,” Mr Barilaro said.

“This card has made a huge difference to the lives of seniors living in the bush who have fewer transport options than those living in the city and we’re excited to announce it will be offered again in 2022 and 2023.”

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said the extension and expansion of the Regional Seniors Travel Card is part of several cost saving measures aimed at seniors in the upcoming State Budget.

“We know the cost of living is a big issue facing seniors and households, which is why the Regional Seniors Travel Card is being offered to even more people,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Increased funding will allow us to extend the card from 2022 to more seniors in the regions, including those eligible for the Age Pension and receiving either a Disability Support Pension or a Carer Payment from Services Australia.”

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said the Regional Seniors Travel Card has provided a significant boost to businesses across our regions.

“Having an extra $250 in their pocket has made it easier for regional seniors to get to the shops and medical appointments and stay connected locally and with friends and family living in other parts of the State. It’s also injected more than $108million into regional economies, benefitting local taxi operators and fuel stations,” Mr Toole said.

“We’ve been reviewing the schemes that support people with disability and carers to ensure they meet the needs of those in the regions, including investing in community transport and a new smart card for the Taxi

Transport Subsidy Scheme.

“We know these groups would also like to be eligible for the Regional Seniors Travel Card and we’re pleased to be able to make that happen as part of the next phase of this program.”

The Regional Seniors Travel Card can be used for pre-booked NSW Trainlink Regional trains and coaches, fuel and taxis.

From 2022, eligible applicants will include seniors who have reached the Age Pension age and are

receiving: • The Age Pension through Services Australia or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs • A Disability Support Pension or a Carer Payment from Services Australia • A Service Pension issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs • A Disability Pension through the Department of Veterans’ Affairs under the Veterans’ Entitlements Act 1986 • A War Widow(er)’s

Pension issued by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

People who hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card issued by Services Australia or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs are also eligible.

The regional boundaries for applicants will remain the same in 2022. More information about which regional areas are included in this initiative can be found at www.service.nsw. gov.au.

Nambucca Heads Library precinct renovations at tender stage

THE Nambucca Heads Library renovations are a step closer to getting started.

Nambucca Valley Council has advised News Of The Area that, “The final detailed design plans have been completed and the construction of the upgrade is now at the tender stage.

“Tenders close at the end of June and will be assessed by a tender review panel and a recommendation put to Council in July.”

Marlene Griffin, Nambucca Valley Arts Council Volunteer, contacted News Of The Area to share some community concerns about the proposed refurbishment of Nambucca Library.

Ms Griffin stated that people are concerned about the impact the refurbishment in the current form will have on the usability of the Nambucca Community and Arts Centre.

“The Arts Centre has a

long history of providing entertainment to the community from both local and touring theatre and musical groups,” Ms Griffin told News Of The Area.

The initial concept plans, stated Ms Griffin, were put out for comment by Council two and a half years ago and 47 responses were received, 46 of which were received within the time frame.

Ms Griffin said, “Of these only three were in favour of the plans, and there are overwhelming community concerns about the plan.”

One major concern relates to the proposed changes to the courtyard between the Arts Centre and the Library.

This will be landscaped, with seating put down, and a fence with a gate installed.

The landscaping of the courtyard, and the inclusion of the seats, will mean that the area that has been used to unload equipment and enable disabled and elderly access will no longer be available for use.

When asked about the reduction of space Mr Robert Hunt, Assistant General Manager CS from Nambucca Valley Council, said, “The current bus stop will cease as there is another bus stop around the corner.

“This area will become a loading zone with a pram ramp in the kerb where musicians for example can unload and load their instruments.

“Their vehicle will have to be legally parked somewhere else until the concert/event has finished.

“There will also be a No Standing Zone which will allow the elderly and others to be dropped off and picked up if attending an event.

“There are already two disabled parking spaces in the immediate area.”

Mr Hunt said that with the current arrangement, “There is a definite safety issue with vans, buses and other vehicles crossing the footpath to park in the courtyard and then reversing out onto the

“The courtyard will become a better utilised space by the community when it is upgraded and becomes part of the library and cultural centre facilities and will vastly improve what is currently somewhat of an

eyesore in the Nambucca CBD.” Safe evacuation from the Centre is also an issue, said Ms Griffin.

News Of The Area contacted Council, who wish to assure the community that there is no need for concern.

“There are ample

emergency exits located in the hall including front, side and rear emergency exits.

“The courtyard is proposed to be fenced and gated, however patrons can still exit through the gate as well as the double front doors and rear exit,” said Mr Hunt.

IT is an exciting time for the Nambucca River Jockey Club with the approved funding for new running rails to be installed at the racecourse in Bowraville.

An agreement proposed by the Country Racecourse Development Fund was signed on June 14 by the Nambucca River Jockey Club to fund the provisions of the material and transportation costs that are associated with the new rails and components.

The Board of the Nambucca River Jockey Club are pleased to announce that a new running rail will be installed at the Bowraville Racecourse in the coming months.

The installation of this new rail will be completed

by Club members and will be supervised by the supplier Simtrack.

“We have a great crew of volunteers,” Nambucca River Jockey Club Secretary Geoff Harris told News Of The Area.

Valley Artist in the Spotlight: Alicia Parry

LOCAL singing sensation Alicia Parry has been singing and performing for as long as she can remember.

“I grew up putting on shows with my cousins for our parents, Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents, and any other innocent bystander,” Alicia told News Of The Area.

When Alicia hit her teen years she was asked what she would like to be when she left school.

This was a difficult question for her to answer.

“I remember feeling lost,” she said.

“The only thing that ever stuck out to me was to be a singer, but singing wasn’t ever really seen as your typical career choice.”

During these impressionable years Alicia took vocal lessons and entered local talent quests.

She sang at the school and at local events such as the Carols by Candlelight.

“These opportunities helped me gain confidence and gave me the experience of performing live,” she said.

It was at the tender age of seventeen when Alicia landed her first gig at the local pub.

With many live gigs such as clubs, pubs, bars, weddings, private functions and charity

events tucked under her belt it was time for Alicia to start a different career path, that of becoming a mother.

“I took a break from the live gigging scene to focus on raising my three children,” she said of her time out from singing.

Her reintroduction to the musical scene wasn’t until she was still on maternity leave with her third child, she decided to start teaching

vocal lessons one to two days a week from her home.

Now some years later, Alicia is teaching vocal lessons four days a week.

Her students range in age from seven years old to mature adults.

“I love sharing my knowledge, to see how much someone grows in their confidence and ability is just so rewarding,” she said proudly.

When asked what she loved so much about music, Alicia replied, “I love that music is for anybody and everybody.

“It doesn’t discriminate.

“People of all ages, abilities, culture and race can experience the joy that music brings.

“So as cliché as it sounds, music has no barrier, and I love that.”

It was in 2014 when Alicia entered back into the live music scene.

IT was a full house at the Music Station for the first Ready Set Go, Youth Performance held on June 20.

The atmosphere was electric as the sound of excitement and music buzzed throughout the Music Station in Macksville.

The Creative Youth Council proudly launched their first Ready Set Go Youth Music q

Event called - ‘Let’s Get Live’ on Sunday.

The event featured local Nambucca teens who performed and coordinated the entire show.

The event is the final product of 18 months filled with hard work consisting of fortnightly workshops held at the Music Station for young people in the Nambucca Valley aged between 12 and 18 years.

Alicia’s music is best described as acoustic pop.

She plays various covers and puts her own artistic spin to the performance.

What is in the pipelines for this amazingly talented musician?

“My priority for this year is focusing on getting some more originals completed.

“I am hoping to make some time for writing this year.

“Another project is getting some tracks down for recording.”

‘Looking Back’

INVESTIGATING history is a fascinating endeavour.

Peta Coe has explored this idea in her imaginary works which reference prehistory and ancient cultures.

During the last two years, she has considered the flowering and decline of mainly European civilisations while pondering what our own future might look like.

Works in a variety of media, including large and small scale paintings and wall reliefs will be on display.

While they reference the past and at times reinterpret

artistic achievement across the ages, other exhibits evoke particular cultures using fantasy.

Peta said, “I wanted to pay homage to those civilisations whose creative output was phenomenal.

“While all civilisations have triumphed over the centuries, I have, in particular, great admiration for the Ancient Greek sculptors of the fifth century BCE. “For me, my recent creative work has been like a love poem to the ancients.”

DEAR Jasminda,

No ashes for attorney JOAN was married to Patrick for 15 years.

Joan has three children from a previous marriage, being Brian, Angus and Julie.

When Joan began developing early signs of dementia, Joan and Patrick appointed each other as their enduring power of attorney.

The usual provisions of their power of attorney allowed the spouse to “confer benefits” on him or herself.

As Joan’s condition deteriorated, she told Patrick to “enjoy himself” as she knew his life would be centred around caring for her.

It was not long before Patrick took over Joan’s affairs as her attorney.

Out of Joan’s investments, Patrick purchased a new car to drive her to appointments and to do the weekly shopping.

Over the following years, Patrick also took respite holidays by himself; a cruise that they always wanted to do together, and a holiday Turkey, where they had honeymooned and a trip to the Ashes, a life-long dream for Patrick.

When Joan dies, it is revealed that Patrick had spent over half of her investments, which otherwise would have been inherited by her children.

Brian was very angry and as Joan’s executor, audited Patrick’s actions.

Although many of the expenses Patrick claimed were reasonable, and he thought he was acting with the blessing of Joan in taking overseas holidays, Patrick was required to pay a considerable amount of money back into Joan’s estate, as only reasonable gifts and living expenses are permitted.

Joan’s power of attorney could have included a power for Patrick to pay for respite holidays.

It is important to consider all the options when recording your attorney’s powers, to ensure all parties are clear on the powers that are granted.

MANY local residents burn with white-hot anger at domestic cats roaming through

their properties at any time of the day or

We don’t allow dogs or domestic stock to

roam freely through the neighbourhood, so why are domestic cats exempt?

It beggars belief.

To try and stop this, I have started

THERE seems to be a lot of variation in advice for this problem.

I know of some parents who make their kids wash their clothes when they start high school, and others who are willing to accept baskets of dirty washing even after their children have flown the coop.

I'm a bit pedantic about washing and drying clothes because I like to match the pegs and hang the clothes depending on who owns them and then play the 'match the sock' game, which never ends well because of the sock-eating washing machine.

I have, however, stopped putting the washing away.

Now I just place piles of clean clothes outside each person's bedroom where they invariably sit until desperation kicks in.

I feel that this is going to be a shortterm dilemma, because eventually they will all leave home, or, if they don't, I will leave home and join a commune where everyone wears easy-care clothing or maybe no clothing depending on where the commune is located.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

I would simply implement a clotheswashing roster for your offspring, or else wait until they have their own children and then bask in the joy of their appreciation even if it is 20 years too late.

I SAW your full page ad about the flood recovery morning tea at Macksville Senior Citizens Centre on 16 of June to get together and thank the volunteers, so I went along, there was a beautiful morning tea, hot and cold food, a lot of volunteers were there but only a few residents.

I was very disappointed with this response when you think of all the people that went through the recovery system 1173 in total.

Surely some people that were helped could have turned up to say thank you to these people, very disappointing.

“This year Michaela’s trip took her five days as she had to drive through NSW to avoid Victoria’s Covid problems.”

Macksville Sea Eagles go down to Coffs Harbour Comets THE Coffs Harbour Comets have won their fourth straight match after a 32-22 victory away from home against the Macksville Sea Eagles, during Round 9 of the Tooheys New Group 2 Rugby League season.

After being last on the ladder last month with a 1-4 record, the Comets have turned their season around to move into third spot on the ladder.

The 70 Years and Over (Any Board) went to Keith Drinkwater, while the Sup Foil event was taken out by James Casey.

On Sunday, 40 paddlers competed in a massstart Distance Race, with competitions across 3km and 9km courses.

Nicki Day was the fastest woman to complete the 3km course, finishing with a time of 30:15.2.

Shane Lynch was the fastest male across the finish line, with a time of 19:08.5.

In the longer 9km course, Kaelan Lockhart was the fastest with a time of 47:47.1.

Ange Jackson crosses as the fastest female with a time of 1:01:03.2.

SUP Foil and Wing Sling were new Divisions added to the competition this year.

The men’s two ball best ball on Saturday saw Shane Langley team up with Dan Traynor from Frederickton for a good win.

Runners up were Neil Cunneen teaming with Mike Simpson.

Shane and Dan's consistency was exhibited with each winning the nearest the pin - Shane finishing about 30cm from the pin.

Other nearest the pins went to Allan Clarke, Michael

Manning and Col Dunne.

Allan Clarke won the midweek competition sponsored by Liam Fuller.

Balls went to Tony Green, Liam Fuller and Paul Fox. Rhonda McCauliffe and Allan Clarke are continuing their junior coaching on Friday at 4 o'clock before a two week break for school holidays.

Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club

A HUGE week of Golf on the Island this week, not to mention the continuing Course Recovery Program being completed by our staff, with much appreciated ongoing assistance from Brad Fortesque / Fortade Pty Ltd and MidCoast Trucks for providing us with some heavy equipment.

On Sunday and Monday, we welcomed the Ready Mob Indigenous Knockout 2021 Tournament attracting competitors from La Perouse, out to Gilgandra and up to the Queensland border.

Congratulations to the winning team from Kempsey, and first time entrants from Bowraville who managed a very creditable 3rd place.

There was a lot of friendly rivalry, both on and off course - notably the contest between Coffs Harbours teams 1 and 2, with the 2’s winning that contest.

The Best Dressed team was from Gilgandra.

You guys were so well organised, and it was our pleasure to host your Tournament - we hope to see you all again next year.

An Open Medley Stableford on Tuesday 15 June was won by Lyn Grose (29) with 42 points from Colin Habgood (8) from Kempsey with 40 points.

These guys blitzed the field with the closest other good scores from Rod Kinnear (Kempsey) and Bill Mann back on 35 points, and the ball rundown to 33 on countback.

Our General Manager, Jonathan Zirkler (4) took out Division 1 (scratch to 16) with 37 points from Rodney Smith (15) from Tully Park with 36 points on countback.

SATURDAY 19 June saw the mighty Nambucca Valley Lions travel down to Port Macquarie to take on the Magpies.

The Lions gave it a solid crack but ultimately went down to the Magpies 9.7 (61) - 5.5 (35).

It’s been a tough year for the lads from Nambucca so far with one win out of eight games but the attitude displayed from every player each week tells a different story.

It’s not just the game of footy that’s keeping the club running, it's the lads that make up the team and their willingness to play and get together week in, week out and that is one of the key ingredients of a successful football club.

Jane Austen’s final manuscript has been brought to life with lovely detail, making it a perfectly diverting period drama. What better way to wile away a winter’s Saturday evening than to dip into a world where top hats and flowing gowns are the backdrop to everyday life, and romance is always promising to bloom? When you’re lounging in your tracksuit after ordering takeaway pizza, it’s the epitome of escapism. Tonight, in the penultimate episode, Lady Denham (Anne Reid) is close to death, and the tensions between Edward (Jack Fox), Clara (Lily Sacofsky, above) and Esther (Charlotte Spencer) reach boiling point.

Scripted dramas and reality TV may be all the rage, so where do you go to soothe the soul with life-affirming stories and comic warmth? If you haven’t already made the discovery, it’s this unique interview series.

With different interviewers each season – journalist and professor of global affairs Stan Grant and Paralympian Kurt Fearnley have asked the questions – this round boasts singer and drag queen Courtney Act (right).

Through five episodes, kicking off tonight, she chats with some notable young people who are keen to make a difference. Tonight Lisa Origliasso, one half of pop duo The Veronicas, delves into sexism in the music industry and the pivotal role of family.

By Karen GRIBBIN LAST weekend Newcastle SUP Club held the annual Scotts Head Paddle Games.

Little Beach dawned on Friday morning, mild and sunny with a low swell.

Dyan Thais, Club Secretary said, “The location is beautiful, there’s never any trouble getting contestants to Scotts Head, and we are opening with a perfect winter's day.”

The beach was dotted with tents, stand up paddle

boards galore, and a sea of colourful flags.

Scotts Head P & C were cooking up a storm with egg and bacon rolls and sausage sandwiches.

News Of The Day caught up with Dyan who said last year was due to be the 10th Anniversary of the games, but had to be cancelled because of Covid.

The games had been locally organised for nine years, but when the event became too big, the Newcastle SUP Club inherited the games.
