First ‘The White’ and now ‘The Grey’ By Kelly MAY

EARLY in 2018 Madeline Drew released her very first self-published novel titled ‘The White’. Along with her Editor Nicole Thompson, these two young Port Stephens women are driven to succeed. Madeline grew up in One

With her eyes set on a trilogy Miss Drew had already began work on the sequel before the launch of her first novel. Ms Drew told News Of The Area, “I began writing The Grey on Christmas Eve of 2017 and completed writing

The event is delivered by Rainbow Bricks’ Angela and Kevin, who are residents in Port Stephens. Many of the exhibitors are avid Lego builders who give up their time to display their creations. Return and Earn to raise funds By Kelly MAY

TOMAREE Community Hospital Auxiliary never stops fundraising for their local hospital. As major works commenced on the renovations to the Tomaree Community Hospital, the local auxiliary announced a new initiative to boost their donations. Tomra Collection Solutions Australia offer a three-month charity rotation at the recycling centres in the area. Charities are allocated a rotation on the recycling machines with funds going

direct the the chosen cause. Until Sunday 24 February 2019, the Tomaree Community Hospital Auxiliary will have the opportunity to accept donations from all members of the public in the Return and Earn Centre at the Nelson Bay Bowling Club. Located in the rear car park of the Club, the Centre is equipped to accept donations of all sizes. Whether you have a handful or a truck load for recycling it will all go toward helping the Tomaree Hospital and ultimately the Port Stephens community. Making your donation

is easy; just press the ‘Donation’ button for Tomaree Hospital Auxiliary and your donation will be directed to the charity’s bank. This new fundraising initiative will help the environment and encourage Port Stephens residents and visitors to get involved. Publicity Officer for the Auxiliary, Ms Denise Sharp said, “This is a first time event for the charity and the auxiliary is thrilled at the opportunity.” Auxiliary Secretary, Ms Yvonne Barber told News Of The Area, “With the support of our community members

Win $100

the auxiliary hopes to be a regular participant in the recycling fundraising, helping raise much needed funds for the hospital.” “All funds raised are used to support resources and supplies not funded otherwise funded, and to support the wellbeing of the patient,” Ms Barber said. Keeping Australia clean and donating to your hospital is the ideal fundraiser. For any further information about this event, collection or regarding centre operation please contact Auxiliary Secretary Yvonne Barber on 0457 693 366.

of the bell, made of a bronze with high tin content, made it impossible for the thief to carry it very far without fear of being caught, so abandoned it. Mr Clifford Johnson from the Anglican Church told News Of The Area, “The bell holds sentimental value for the Church community and was a significant loss for the town folk.” “The bell had been donated by the NSW Board of Fire Commissioners celebrating 60 years of service to the Cessnock Brigade and also for many years of service to the local Church by Warden Edward Armstrong while a resident of Karuah.” With volunteers, Mr Michael Rapa, Mr Johnson, and Mr Michael McGirk a new tower has been constructed and the bell restored to its rightful place in the last week.

and other BBQ delights. Mr Peter Francis from the Lions Club told News Of The Area, “In total, 754 hours of volunteer time from the Lions, the Men’s Shed, Rotary, Tea Gardens Lions, and other community volunteers helped to ensure motorists were able to enjoy a safe journey.” “We served well over 3000 cups of tea and coffee that are sponsored by Bushells, Arnotts, and Toll Holdings.” Mrs Glenys Francis added, “We served so many, we ran out of cups.” Statistics from the Lions Club show that the food served totalled a whopping 26 big lunches, 69 big breakfasts, 75 BLTs, 82 steak sandwiches,

182 egg and bacon sandwiches, 300 sausage on a roll, 475 soft drinks, 300 bottles of water 300, and 60 cheese toasties. A great effort from a volunteer-led organisation. Mr Francis said, “If we saved even one life or serious injury, it is well and truly worth the effort.” “While all of this was happening we also did Christmas present wrapping and sold Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings in MarketPlace Raymond Terrace.” “Not a bad effort from our generous Club members and community partners.”

Kevin Colman said that a meeting of community representatives endorsed the submission of the white paper which secured some $4 million for new SRV capital works projects and progressed several more in the current works schedule.

“Tilligerry Forward is not set in concrete,” he said. Mr Colman said, “There is much more community input needed as we move forward but it is essential that we have a defined direction for the years ahead.” ‘Tilligerry Forward’ priortises the following: • A ‘Town Square’ redevelopment of Lemon tree Passage (LTP). • Pathway linkage of LTP, Mallabula and Tanilba Bay. • Improving the ‘streetscape appeal’ of Pres. Wilson Walk. • Upgrading the ‘dinghy

ramps’ in each suburb to ease the pressure on the Henderson Park facility. • The creation of a ‘Village Green’ and ‘Cultural Village’ in Mc Cann Park LTP. • Rebuilding critical link roads in Mallabula and Tanilba Bay. • A centrepiece ‘Arrival Statement’ in the new roundabout at Tanilba. • Updating youth and community facilities at the Mallabula Complex. • The 30-page document is available for perusal at the Lemon Tree Passage Library.

ONE in five children witness and experience domestic violence in the one place they are meant to feel safest of all. Domestic violence doesn’t discriminate in age, gender, culture, religion or economic background, it affects us all. When a parent escapes violence with their children they usually leave everything they have and know behind. For the children this means a new home, a new school and having to make new friends. Friends with Dignity is a National not-for-profit organisation, providing assistance to the those who have been displaced by domestic violence. Friends with Dignity CoDirector and Chief Financial Officer, Julia McKenna said,

“Leaving behind your home, school, friends and family to escape the ravages of domestic violence, drastically affects the confidence of young people,” Friends with Dignity’s Chief Executive Officer, Manuela Whitford said, “Children living in refuges are required to enrol at the nearest school but often have nothing to take to class, due to their unstable living circumstances and lack of resources.” “Starting the new school year is hard enough for all children, but starting at a new school, not knowing anyone and not having the essentials that every other child has, can be all too much to handle,” said Ms McKenna. The volunteer organisation is currently running a Back to School Drive to help children in

Hunter refuges start school with dignity but they need your help. Ms McKenna said, “We are aiming to provide over 500 backpacks nationally to children who have faced the trauma of domestic violence, and had to leave their much loved belongings behind,” Donations of essential school items such as backpacks, pen, pencils, highlighters, notepads, pencil cases, coloured pencils, erasers, glue, rulers, clear contact, lunch boxes, water bottles and label stickers are needed. Keep Your Pets Cool

Dr Ilona Hudson sits down with News Of The Area to discuss ways to keep animals cool this Summer

By Kelly May

HOT has been the answer for most lately when asked how they are doing. If they could speak, our fur babies would say the same. News Of The Area sat down with local Veterinarian Dr Ilona Hudson to discuss the best way to care for our four legged family members in the heat. If your pets are too big to bring inside with you, then an outdoor patio or Queensland style room is the next best place to provide them shelter. Dr Hudson said, “Providing your dog an area out of direct sunlight with moving air is really important.” “Many people will place a fan on their outdoor undercover area to create a breeze.” It is common practice to wet dogs down with cool water to help them cope, however you could be making it worse.

Dr Hudson told News Of The Area, “Using water to cool your dog down is fine as long as they have immediate access to a fan or continuous running cool water.” “If pets are wetted down and left to sit without a breeze, they will actually get hotter than they were previously.” Heat stroke signs to watch for are uncharacteristically lethargic behaviour, distress, and the edge of their tongue curling when they pant. Immediate cooling methods are vital if you see these signs. The timing of exercise and your dogs breed must be carefully considered. Dr Hudson told News Of The Area, “If you are unable to place the back of your hand on the road for at least five seconds without feeling the burn, then it is too hot to walk your dog.” “Dogs with thick or dark coloured coats

heat up far quicker than others.” Sun safety is essential for all of us, even your dogs. Dr Hudson said, “Many dogs like to lay with their belly up facing the sky, in particular the bigger terrier breeds.” “This needs to be monitored as their bellies will burn and they can develop skin cancer.” Pet sunscreen is available or children’s sunscreen is also a viable substitute. Placing ice blocks in their water bowl helps to cool their drinking water. Dr Hudson said, “You can also freeze dry food or chicken stock in a large block of ice for them to enjoy.” The message may seem obvious but it is clear, taking five mins to consider what a small child would need in the same circumstance may just save your fur baby’s life this Summer.

Things to do in Port Stephens These Summer School Holidays

By Marian SAMPSON

PORT Stephens is still bursting with great things to do with the kids these school holidays. For many families it’s all about balance, a few paid activities and a host of free things to do is on just about every families to do list. Of course there’s the wonderful beaches to visit, and if you think you have been to all of them make sure you check off the list as Port Stephens boasts 26 beaches in its pristine waterways. Ava Maree O’Brien said, “Playing on the beach is great”. There’s fish to be caught

too, but please check out the Marine Park fishing zones prior to casting a line. If beach swimming is not for you, you can check out Tomaree Aquatic Centre and Lakeside Leisure Centre which are sure to cool things down on a budget. There are also some wonderful parks with play equipment including a gated accessible park at Little Beach and stimulating adventure parks at Boomerang Park, Boat Harbour and Fingal Beach. There are free skate parks at Boomerang Park, Anna Bay and Nelson Bay. You can check out

the sculptures at Vantage Estate Corlette and at Soldiers Point Marina where some are larger than life, there are some great photo memory opportunities at these locations. There’s Tilligerry Habitat which is open from 9am-3pm daily with free entry, Tilligerry Habitat is a great place to walk along the boardwalks and to even spot a koala in the wild if you are lucky. A visit to the Salamander Bay or Raymond Terrace Libraries will see you and the kids escape into a world of fantasy between the covers of some beautifully written children’s books in cool air conditioned bliss.

‘KEN the Koala’ dropped in to the caravan parks at Hawks Nest and Jimmy’s Beach to give a special talk to holiday makers and their children on the facts of life when it comes to Australia’s national treasure. Myall Koala and Environment Group’s Adrienne Ingram acted as the interpreter for ‘Ken’ answering questions and debunking some myths around our beloved koalas. “Did you know our Koalas are not bears, they are marsupials, with a pouch and they are only found in Australia,” Adrienne told the gathering. The youngsters were also given a crash course in koala anatomy from their five fingers to the sounds they make to communicate and that fact that only male koalas call. President of the Koala Group, Jill Madden said, “The caravan parks asked us to come and

give a talk, it was a good experience for us and we’ll look at doing it again over the Easter period.” Koalas only have a joey every two or three years and unfortunately, numbers in New South Wales have been going down for years. There’s now estimated to be around 30,000 across the State, where previously there were millions.

A number of reasons have contributed to their demise, tree and forest clearing, so less food, corridors that allow them to move from one patch of forest to another, bushfires, dogs and cats. If you do spot a koala, its best leave it alone unless it’s injured and then call a local wildlife group and they will tell you what’s the best plan of action.

Whiskey Mountain Boys The Whiskey Mountain Boys are live at the Tea Gardens Country Club

By Kelly MAY

THE Festive season has come and gone for another year. Now it is time for The Whiskey Mountain Boys to rock into town. Just three big kids having some fun at the Tea Gardens Country Club on Saturday night 12 January from

7:30pm. With these three larrikins it is all in their voices, cool harmonies, and crazy capers. They are a well oiled outfit, with the knack of turning any occasion into a party. The Whiskey Mountain Boys is a trio of experienced,

talented and professional entertainers. Using instruments such as the bush bass, mandolin, stomp box, bass guitar and acoustic guitars, they deliver their own hillbilly thumping versions of all the well known party songs we all love. With music from some of the all time greatest.

No. 089 1 Corinthians 13: 4 - 8a LOVE - “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy or boast, it is not proud. It is not rude or self-seeking, it is not easily angered and keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, trusts, hopes and perseveres. Love never fails.” Blessings from Lynne Miles Blessings from Lynne Miles

Zone Championships for Athletes

q Under 7 medal winners – Mia Clarke, Boston Maloney and Charleise Chivers.

FORTY-five Raymond Terrace Athletics Centre (RTAC) athletes competed at the recent Port Hunter Zone Championships which they also hosted at their field. It was an incredibly successful weekend for their athletes who competed against the 10 other Centres in the Zone. Three Under 7 athletes, Mila Clarke, Charleise Chivers and Boston Maloney won a total of 3 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze medals. They are awarded medals at Zone as they do not progress any further. The remaining 42 athletes have all qualified in a total of 132 events for the Region Championships at the Hunter Sports Centre, Glendale, in February. This is the first time to have all athletes qualify. A record number of 22 records were set or broken by 15 of the athletes. CONTINUED Page 14
