COASTAL living brings with it an abundant lifestyle, in what can become an unpredictable environment with unforeseen and hidden dangers. Boat Harbour residents are very aware of the beauty of their environment and the dangers that it can bring. Rock fishermen have died on days when the area has appeared to be safe. No one knows the dangers more than Ray and Marcia Smith who lost their Son rock fishing at Boat Harbour twenty one years ago. They are outraged that the life ring has been stolen

produced by the NSW Office of Local Government. The Code must be adopted and automatically applies to NSW Councils affecting all staff and Councillors. There is a recommendation from the Office of Local Government that their standard Social Media policy be included in the Code of Conduct which was adopted. CONTINUED Page 2

from the headland. Marcia Smith told News Of the Area, “Our two Sons were rock fishing on a calm day and a rogue wave swept some of their gear off the rocks, Dean dove in to retrieve the gear and lost his life.” Just six days later another of
her Sons was rescued after being swept off the rocks: he was in the water for around fifty minutes before he was rescued. While the Smith’s applaud the move to make wearing life jackets compulsory for rock fishermen, they know that the life rings are the last line of defence. Peter Murray and his wife Gail spoke to News Of The Area and are
hopeful that someone will fund a replacement life ring for the site. Ultimately they would like to see another installed on the next stretch of coastline at Kingsley Beach. As recently as 2017 local Stephen Spillane rescued a young girl who was swimming adjacent to where the life ring has been stolen.
of the Motion that turn it into a gag order.” Councillor Arnott believes that as an elected representative, it’s part of his job to raise important issues, whether it reflects poorly on the Mayor or other Councillors or not. Councillor Arnott states that it will now be against the rules for Councillors to raise issues that might damage Council’s reputation and to say something that might have a negative impact on Council. Councillor Arnott fears that this may stop Councillors from effectively representing ratepayers and residents. “If they (Council) don’t like being criticised for poor decisions, they (Council) should stop making them.” “Gagging democratically elected
won’t stand for it,” he said. Mayor Ryan Palmer said, “The Code of Conduct is there to protect and uphold the integrity of those who represent our community and set clear guidelines for behaviour. “Councillors can voice their concerns or opposition to anything they like as long as they are not misleading, threatening, intimidating, deceptive, humiliating or offensive.
FROM Page 1
The Code was adopted by Council on the 26 March and supported by all Councillors in attendance except Cr Arnott. Council administers the Code of Conduct and any complaints to come out of it. Councillor Giacomo Arnott of West Ward is standing alone in his staunch opposition to the new rules. Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area, “The Mayor is desperately trying to frame this Motion around one single issue. “Of course no-one condones threatening or intimidating behaviour, and that’s why this behaviour is already unlawful. “The Mayor is purposefully trying to skim over the other parts

Ironically, Stephen also had to rescue the young girl’s family members who went out to assist her as well. This is the third time that the life ring has been stolen. In the past the rings were funded by a National Fishing Club but this avenue has now closed and the local residents are keen to see a Club, local business or individual to step forward to replace the stolen life ring.

Reducing The Burden of Home Loans
By Marian SAMPSON
PARENTS are seeing their children staying at home longer, due to the difficulty that young people are experiencing in finding finance and saving for a home loan. While parents are looking to become empty nesters their children are facing a shortage in affordable housing. Changes in the banking industry post Royal Commission have also seen the Broker industry facing uncertainty. Once young people get finance they need to be smarter
about how they manage their loans. Anita Marshall of Advanced Finance Solutions told News Of The Area, “There are a number of ways you can reduce the burden of your loan. The number one on her list is to make payments weekly or fortnightly instead of monthly “By paying fortnightly instead of monthly the average home buyer cuts around 5 years off the term of their home loan.” Effectively home buyers are paying more off their principal and reducing the interest burden through fortnightly

ANNA Bay Oval is on the market. While there has been long term speculation about what the Council owned land at the end of Port Stephens Drive where the circus sets up when it comes to town. There has been discussions and speculation about a visitors centre being located on the site with ample parking for caravans. However the talk has been just that talk and the NOTA can confirm that there are no documented plans for the site, and Council has confirmed there is no asbestos on the site. The site was reclassified as operational six years ago with the decision made to keep the current zoning as Recreation. Recreational zoning allows for a plethora of uses including airstrips; aquaculture; business identification signs; camping grounds and caravan parks; car parks; cemeteries; community facilities; depots; educational establishments; eco-tourist facilities; emergency services facilities; markets; neighbourhood shops; public administration buildings; recreation areas; registered clubs; research stations; restaurants or cafes; tourist and visitor accommodation; and water supply systems to name a few. Mayor Ryan Palmer told News Of The Area, “The site has sat idle for nearly 20 years with only the circus using it for the couple of years from time to time. “This is the gateway site for the Tomaree Peninsula and not just a site for development but something quite special for our area. “We had been approached to look at an exciting environmental project for the site and as we do with our land sales/leases where appropriate we put the property out for expressions of interest. “Council will explore all options to get the best outcome for our area and that may be not selling at all. “Any funds we receive from a sale, I will be advocating going back into local recreation,” he said.

Quilling Exhibition
By Marian SAMPSON
THE Port Stephens Community Arts Centre feature artist, until 16 April, is Wendy Lane. Wendy was born in South Australia and moved to Port Stephens in 1999. Wendy Lane told News of the Area, “At school I had no artistic ability and no interest in developing creative skills!” In the early 2000’s Wendy tried her hand at Quilling along with lots of other crafts which resulted in boxes of rejected craft supplies. Towards the end of 2015 Wendy had the idea of making a Quilled Christmas card for a friend after seeing a Poinsettia flower at Bunnings. She referred to the internet for inspiration and found Quilling is a reborn craft and was amazed to see what other people around the world were creating. Floral cards were just the beginning. Wendy has developed her own Quilling techniques using modern tools which are more ergonomic. Wendy has several favourite pieces which she enjoys sharing with friends and family. Many items have also been created as donations for
fundraisers. One recently was a Koala sitting on a branch and was part of the Christmas raffle prize for The Port Stephens Koala Rescue. Another was a large piece for the South Australian Outback Odyssey which was auctioned and raised $400 for the Royal Flying Doctors Service. Wendy is inspired by nature and things around her: she studies objects, takes a photo recreates the photo by transforming many curled up pieces of paper! Special items she has made are a London Landscape, a Lamp Post
from Southsea in the south of England where her son lives and a portrait of her Black and White Cat “Chester” who died last year aged 21 ½ human years. Wendy has recently discovered paper flower making and again is amazed by what others are creating. Giant flowers and Flower Walls are fabulous decorations for weddings and events. Wendy loves learning how to create beautiful, colourful flowers. Discovering new techniques ignites my creative spirit which enjoys being nurtured.

Port’s Youth Week celebrations
q Port Stephens Youth Advisory Panel member Mahaylia Soars.
TWILIGHT markets, a skate competition and a youth get-together will be highlights of this year’s Youth Week celebrations across Port Stephens. National Youth Week is the largest celebration for young people in Australia. Thousands of youths aged 12 to 25 get together to share ideas, attend live events and celebrate their contribution to our community. Held from 10 to 18 April 2019, the theme for NSW Youth Week is ‘Coming together to Connect, Share, Speak out and Celebrate’. Mahaylia Soars, Youth Advisory Panel member, says the Port Stephens 2019 program is designed to showcase the innovation and skills of our young people. “This year, we kicked off Youth Week celebrations early with our Twilight Markets in Raymond Terrace on Tuesday 9 April. It’s a fun night out with food, music and markets featuring the talents of local young people — from visual artists to web designers.” “TYCA will be holding its annual Skate and Scooter competition at Nelson Bay Skate Park, while the Snak and Rap youth celebration will be at Mallabula Skate Park. Wherever you are in Port Stephens, there’s an event near you! “The Youth Advisory Panel has played a
central role in developing this year’s program, which is all about showcasing the skills of local young people and encouraging them to be innovative,” Ms Soars said. Amber Herrmann, Council’s Community Development and Engagement Coordinator, says Youth Week is an important event on the Port Stephens calendar. “Port Stephens Council and our Youth Advisory Panel are proud to support Youth Week — it’s a great opportunity for young people across Port Stephens to come together, have a good time and celebrate their contribution to the community.” “Our Youth Advisory Panel do a great job of making sure the voices of young people in Port Stephens are heard. They share ideas and issues affecting youth with Council, and help
to develop plans and activities for young people in our region. “It’s a great way for young people to build their confidence to speak up about issues that affect them,” Ms Herrmann said.
RAAF Base Williamtown F/A-18A/B Hornet and PC-9 aircraft conducted air support for Australian Defence Force Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) training on the Salt Ash Air Weapons Range, near Salt Ash on Monday and Tuesday (8 & 9 April). PC-9 aircraft will conduct the majority of support for JTAC training throughout the week of 8 to 11 April, and 15 to 18 April on the range and near Bulahdelah. Commander of Air Combat Group, Air Commodore (AIRCDRE) Michael Kitcher said the training requires single,
or pairs of Hornet aircraft to conduct continuous passes dropping training rounds over the Salt Ash Rang. Day and night time activities might continue onto other times throughout the week if weather or operational issues cause delays. “The second component of the JTAC training moves to farmland near Bulahdelah where RAAF Base Williamtown 4 Squadron personnel conduct regular training,” AIRCDRE Kitcher said. AIRCDRE Kitcher said JTACs work from forward positions, and direct
the actions of combat aircraft engaged in close air support and other offensive air operations. “In the urban battlespace we face on operations today, the role of JTACs is crucial to ensuring the precision application of air power; delivering maximum effect with minimal impact on civilians and civilian infrastructure. Air Force is committed to ensuring every effort is made to minimise any inconvenience to residents and local community support is appreciated,” he said.

Putting the Edge on the Knife
By Liz MUDD
A REAL passion for his work and the tools he uses daily has turned into an unusual business for Medowie resident Bryce Morsley. Mr Morsley, 25, is a chef at Wests Nelson Bay and one of the main tools of his trade is knives. As an apprentice, Mr Morsley found many excellent knives available in Australia. None were exactly what he wanted so he ordered a custom made knife from a maker in England. It was 12 months before the knife arrived and it did not work as expected, so Mr Morsley decided to make a knife for himself. Researching the process led to meeting Mert Tansu from Branxton, NSW. Tanzer a former chef and now a full time knife maker gave Morsley the essential skills to get started and his first knife was made. Mr Morsley enjoyed the process so much that he began to acquire the specialised equipment needed to continue making knives. Mr Morsley told News Of The Area, “There are quite a few custom knife makers but not many make specialised chefs knives.” “I’m making knives that can be customised to suit the purchaser, give superior performance, and are still very affordable.” His aim is to make knives that are not only functional but beautiful as well.
blade, Morsley also makes and shapes handles, mostly made from Australian native timber, Gidgee, prized by knife makers for its beauty and hardness. Morsley said, “There are less than 50 Master knife makers in the world and only three of them make chefs knives.” “I’m aiming to progress through the steps to become a Journeyman through the American Bladesmith Society.” Morsley has a facebook page for his knives at www.facebook.com/ brycemorsleyknives and is also putting the final touches on a website https://brycemorsley-knives.myshopify. com .
Morsley sources his steel from the United States and different grades are required depending on each knife’s purpose. Blade blanks are waterjet cut at Bennetts Green but every other part of the manufacturing process is done on site in Mr Morsley’s Medowie workshop. Blades are hardened by heating in a purpose built kiln and cooled quickly in engineered oils in a process called quenching. The blade is allowed to cool to room temperature before being reheated to a much lower temperature and air cooled to temper the blade which gives it the durability for work. Complementing the

Heat didn’t stop dune care volunteers By Adrienne INGRAM
SEVENTEEN keen volunteers battled the heat to attack weeds smothering the dunes at Winda Woppa, Hawks Nest. The dunes at the western end of The Boulevarde now has plenty of healthy wattle stabilising the sand but mixed amongst it are bitou bush, threatening to undo all their good work.
The volunteers cut the bitou bush just above sand level and applied poison directly onto the stems so the roots would die in the ground and continue to hold the soil and sand in place. Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Bitou Busters coordinator Jill Madden said the working session was shortened due to the heat, but it didn’t stop the volunteers from achieving great results.
“Everyone agreed this area was a great place to work in,” Jill said. “But they wished they’d brought their swimming gear, so they could have had a refreshing dip as the sea looked very inviting.” She thanked everyone for making such a difference to the beautiful dunes at Winda Woppa but said there was still plenty more weeding to do in the months ahead.

Dear Jasminda,
IS SPRING THE BEST SEASON TO SELL MY HOME?? SPRING has always been the go-to season for listing property. In reality, with blue skies and warmer weather after Winter’s chill, but without Summer’s intense heat; vibrant gardens after Winter’s dreariness and Summer’s dryness, and Autumn as the forgotten season, it was definitely all about Spring! But my how times have changed! With sellers wanting to stand out from the crowd, the past decade has seen Autumn’s popularity skyrocket. With fewer competing listings, lovely consistent weather and that dreamy, golden Autumn light that compliments homes and gardens, Autumn is the ‘new Spring’. And surprisingly, while Summer and Winter were traditionally no-go zones for listing, they too have increased in popularity as sellers take advantage of these less crowded listing markets and the heightened enthusiasm for moving that a new year brings. So, while all four seasons have merit, it depends entirely on your reason for selling. There is no doubt however, that the Christmas holiday period allows sellers to ready their properties to maximise profits with Autumn’s beauty. And with Autumn in full swing – now is a great time to list! R and R Property offers an in-house style service as an integral part of our listing process. Our knowledgeable team can advise you on what you need to do to present your home in the best possible light. Hope this helps Denise

Last week my husband and I went on a Date Night and it was a flop, mainly due to external circumstances such as torrential rain, a restaurant booking that fell through and a noisy alternative.
Time for Reality Check Dear News Of The Area,
US golfers will be pleased to know that if you believe BIll Shorten it should only take about 8 to 10 minutes to recharge our vehicles. Mine takes 6 to 8 hours. This must be some new wonder he is introducing. Obviously his electric car policy has been well thought out. Global carbon emissions are currently
rising by twice as much as Australia’s total annual emissions. It is completely naive to think that action taken by Australia on its own can influence the impact of climate change, particularly given the fact emissions are rising very strongly in China & India. We live in la la land. It is time for a reality check. David Bruce Tea Gardens
Quick fix housing Dear News Of The Area,
IN response to your “Plaza Plans” (News Of The Area, 21 March 2019) This is what one would call quick fix housing for homeless people. Older people wouldn’t consider selling their comfortable homes to buy one one these cement boxes on leased land. Older people ‘s housing deserves a more interesting style/ plan. From its appearance on paper and what was said at the meeting I cannot see this going to far. What is needed is some long term planning in the centre of town and how the communities needs are to be met. Transport, medical, foot ways and other service providers eg Nursing home need to be improved if you are READING:
trying to increase accomodation for another 200 – 300 hundred older people. Susan McDonnell
Disillusioned, Mrs KG, Hawks Nest. AH, Date Night. What sadist came up with a concept where people who have been married for decades need to go out and pretend they’ve just met. It is doomed to fail. The very concept of Date Night, where two people go out to forget their responsibilities, their children and their mortgage to “enjoy themselves” (as quoted in the Cambridge Dictionary no less) seems to insinuate that non-Date Nights are not pleasurable at all. Going on a date is smoke and mirrors, anticipatory stuff. You date when you are getting to know each other. You don’t date when you’ve already been intimately exposed to every eccentricity, every habit, every political view, hell, let’s be honest here, every orifice of the person sitting opposite you. You not only know your dining partner’s hobbies and interests, you know what they look like slumped over a plastic chair in the shower covered in their own vomit. You know what they feel and sound like when they bite your arm and swear like a trooper when giving birth because lavender oil and deep breathing just doesn’t cut it. You know what they smell like after you’ve roughed it together on a six-week camping trip. You have a lifetime of bonding experiences, so revel in the good, try to erase the bad, and don’t think for one moment that a platter of overpriced Warrigal greens, red wine or an arthouse flick once a month will make one iota of difference. Carpe diem, Jasminda.
Numbers 14: 18 LONGSUFFERING - “The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in love, forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet, He does not leave the guilty unpunished; He visits the iniquity (sin) of the fathers on the children for generations.” Blessings from Lynne Miles

FRIENDSHIP and belonging is part of the essence of every community. Port Stephens is lucky to have a special Friendship Group. Members of The Port Stephens Friendship Group visited the Victor Chang Cardiac Institute in Darlinghurst Sydney for a tour of their research unit dedicated to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. The institute was founded in 1994 in memory of pioneering surgeon Dr Victor Chang and has been responsible for reducing the mortality rate from cardiac disease by 76%. The tour was conducted by Research Scientist, Professor Diane Fatkin. The tour took the members through the laboratory and research areas of this world class facility explaining some of the discoveries into diagnostic, prevention and treatment of heart disease. At the conclusion of this interesting and informative tour, members of the Friendship Group enjoyed lunch at the Cruising Yacht Club at Rushcutters Bay before heading home again with Port Stephens Coaches.
