Sad Ending of HMAS Banks
By Geoff WALKER
MV Banks was moored across the outer berths of Albatross Marina at Lemon Tree Passage for well over a year. The ship was available for inspection and charter. It became headline news in Queensland last year when its maritime service came to an abrupt end. HMAS Banks entered service with the Royal Australian Navy in 1960 as a general purpose vessel. She did survey, supply and training work for the navy for over twenty years. Built in Queensland along with her sister ship HMAS Bass, this ‘Explorer’ class steel ship displaced 260 tons (loaded), was 101 feet in length and drew 8 feet (2.4 metres). Banks had a top speed of 9 knots and carried an armament of 0.50 calibre machine guns. Her crew complement consisted of 14 Officers and men. After decommissioning, HMAS Banks was sold off and operated out of Ulladulla NSW as MV Banks for fishing charters. In recent times the ship could be found plying the waters of the Great Barrier Reef in the Whitsunday Passage. Sadly, cyclone Debbie arrived last year and Banks found itself high and dry on the rocks in Cid Harbour. Refloated at a cost of $365,000, the former naval workhorse was finally towed to Townsville to be broken down for scrap.

Mambo Fire Community Meeting Ester, 25. Image, 26. Style, 28. Ahem.
ClassiC sudoku
By Marian SAMPSON
THE fire which raged through Mambo Wanda Wetlands in December 2018 has seen growing community concerns. While the Wetlands are starting to come back there are issues that the fire has brought up. Soldiers Point Rural Fire Service (RFS) Volunteers were joined by the NSW Fire Service at a public meeting this weekend to share information on the fire with local residents. While there has been plenty of speculation around arson Daniel O’Meara Captain of the Soldiers Point Rural Fire Service told those gathered
that the fire was reported as suspicious and that he believes that Police have spoken to people in relation to the fire but ultimately that was a matter for the Police. The fire started on dry land and while the RFS endeavoured to keep the fire on dry land in the early stages they were ultimately unable to do so and once the fire went into the wetland there was very little they could do. Fighting the fire was a joint effort which saw cooperation between Marine Rescue, the RFS and the NSW Fire Service. 17 RFS units were
deployed across the fire with units from nearby RFS branches joining the fight. Daniel O’Meara told News Of The Area, “There were around 80 Firefighters on the ground while the fire burned with an estimated $80,000 worth of man hours invested in this one fire
event.” In many ways we were lucky that half of the wetlands were preserved after this fire event. Residents in properties which fronted the fires expressed their confidence in the Rural Fire Service and NSW Fire Service to keep them safe and some
said they could see that everything was going to be fine and went back to bed while the wetlands burned. “Our main consideration throughout fighting a fire is preserving life and property,” he said. Emergency services were hampered by people driving to the fire to “rubber
neck”. Road closures, “rubber neckers” and plantings in Asset Protection Zones were some of the issues of concern raised by the community. Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens said, “Most of us run away from danger and the RFS and NSW Fire Service members ran towards it to save homes.”

Port Booming Over Holiday Period
By Marian SAMPSON
THERE have been plenty of “No Vacancy” signs at accommodation houses around Port Stephens and the beaches have been full of happy locals and holiday makers. Beach umbrellas and shelters have transformed the Bay as holiday makers have sought shelter from the wonderful summer weather which we have all been enjoying. All of which has seen strong trade in our local Bay cafes, restaurants and retail outlets. Leah Anderson President of the Tomaree
Business Chamber told News Of The Area, “I’ve seen people everywhere and all the cafes and restaurants throughout the days and at night seem full. “It’s been really good to see the businesses doing so well,” she said. Trina Afflick of Pizazz Boutique in Magnus Street Nelson Bay said, “Trade has been fantastic.” Trina enthusiastically spoke about a good future for retail trade in the Nelson Bay CBD where her business moved from the marina precinct. “It’s good to see tourists enjoying the facilities that Nelson Bay provides: we’ve
AFTER spending many waking hours tirelessly working towards raising funds for the Tomaree Community Hospital, the Tomaree Community Hospital Auxiliary received a very grateful ‘Thank you’ recently. While they enjoyed their special morning tea, hospital staff member Katrina Dorman demonstrated the King Vision Video Laryngosope. The Laryngoscope is newest edition to hospital equipment. A purchase made
possible by funds recently raised and donated by the Auxiliary. Ms Dorman said, “The King Vision Video Laryngoscope is a small camera mounted on the end of a tube with an enlarged view.” “It allows doctors to more easily monitor the patient’s airway during the difficult task of intubation.” “This is then used for mechanical ventilation, similarly to when a patient has a breathing tube during an operation,” said Ms Dorman Hospital Supervisor, Mr Martin Lau said, “The
attachment of the camera to the scope allows the Doctor to see the process of insertion and is an excellent accessory to the hospital equipment”. Mr Lau again thanked the Auxiliary for their amazing efforts and particularly to Craft Officer, Ms Glynis Durrant who manages the sewing and knitting teams. Their cloth shopping bags are one of the auxiliary’s best sellers. Hosted by the hospital staff, the morning tea was just one small way to give back to the women of the Auxiliary for their tireless work for the community.

been getting very positive feedback about the unique offerings in the township. “The businesses in the Bay offer a different experience to the chain stores in the main shopping centres, with every shop offering a unique style which tourist and locals really appreciate,” she said. The new Yacaaba Street extension has also seen good use with plenty of people using the green space and pedestrian access to the waterfront. The Bay will again hit peak occupancy over Australia Day which will be celebrated at Fly Point.

Doreen is back for the Community PORT Stephens hasn’t quite been the same over the past two months or so since long time Tilligerry community worker Doreen Bradley OAM has been out of action. On 29 October last year, the now 86 year old was admitted to hospital for what was to be a simple procedure. A two day stay was planned to rectify a pinched nerve in her back. It wasn’t to be. “Complications from the surgery led me being shuffled between four hospitals and a Rehab Centre,” she said. “I also spent time in a Trauma Unit.”
“I’m home now and get daily visits from the home care people as my mobility is restricted,” she added. Doreen was overwhelmed by the number of and well-wishers who visited and called during her recuperation. “Bob and Cynthia Baldwin were there every second day and I had continuous visits from Senior Constable Luke Rogers,” she said. “Some of the others who come to mind are Keith and Eve Jones, Lisa Riley, Sue from Salt Ash as well as Kylie
Anderson and Donna Delphine from the RSL,” she added. Doreen has been a driving force in the community for some 47 years, particularly in helping vulnerable residents down on their luck. The Tilligerry Pool was named in her honour and her campaigns for better policing have been relentless. And the future? “When they started talking nursing homes, I told them to forget about it,”she said. “I’m staying put. There are still a lot of people out there I can help and I’ll be back in the saddle very soon.”

AFTER four years of dedication, Caring for Our Port Stephens Youth, a registered charity better know as COPSY has finally become a reality in Port Stephens. COPSY is determined to bring down the walls of the stigma that exists against mental health and to help young people understand and manage the difficult issues in their lives. In March this year COPSY will launch their counselling service, “A Space to Talk”. This service will be free and available for the youth of Port Stephens between 12- 18 years. A Space to Talk will initially be located in the Tomaree Library and Community Centre with a view to expand to Medowie and Raymond Terrace this year. Public Relations Officer, Jewell Drury told News Of The Area, “Counselling can cost around $120 per visit, with the majority of services being in Newcastle or Maitland. This prevents most of our youth receiving the help they so desperately need, with the cost to the parent becoming yet another pressure for families.” “There is a stigma around depression, anxiety and seeing a Counsellor. We would like to change that. One of the main things we want the youths to know is that you are not broken if you are depressed,” said Ms Drury. COPSY aims to ensure reduce the overwhelming nature of issues such as, grief, family break ups, relationships, school and study stress, addictions, anger, bullying, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, body image and mental health concerns. The new service will also provide School and Community Settings programs covering intervention and prevention, workshops and seminars addressing youth mental health and wellbeing issues. COPSY Founder, Geoffrey Basser said, “In order to obtain a free service, we need the help and support of corporate sponsors, businesses, clubs and individuals.” “We will run solely on donations, sponsorships and grants from our supporters and we need you to come on board with us,” said Mr Basser. For more information about COPSY services or to make a donation simply call 0490 716 265.

LIZARDS, snakes, and reptiles of all kinds have made their presence known for all the right reasons these School holidays. Children of all ages had the opportunity to experience an interactive, entertaining and educational reptile show at Raymond Terrace’s MarketPlace last week.
‘Reptile Rules’ gave the community a chance to get up close with the animals and learn interesting facts. Patting pythons, touching turtles, stroking crocodiles and even wearing snakes as crowns brought smiles and laughter all round. Even the parents had a giggle at the presenters contagious humour.

Ms Boyd said, “The handler was wonderful, he was friendly and engaging and really encouraged everyone to handle the reptiles.” Another happy Mum Stacey Vella told News Of The Area, “My eight year old Riley, loved how funny the show was, and Noah my five year old loved how he was allowed to pat the animals and ask questions.” “It was really good to see all the kids laughing and having fun while also learning about the animals.” Needless to say there will be plenty of stories to share among friends about their reptilian encounter, when these lucky Port Stephens kids return to school in a couple of weeks.

Local mum, Melanie Levy said, “Seldom have I seen a group of kids as mesmerized as they were at the show.” “It was really interactive with the kids handling the snakes and lizards.” Every child got the chance to touch the reptiles. Presenter John had such charisma that even the shy and more hesitant little ones eventually felt confident enough to touch the reptiles. Ms Levy said, “The presenter was absolutely fantastic with adults and kids alike, he really made it great.” Raymond Terrace Grandmother Linda Boyd took her two Grandchildren Silas and Leila to see the show.

It’s also just downright stupid to leave a child or pet in the car, no matter how close you are paying for fuel, dashing in to pick up takeaway and so on are not circumstances worth risking the safety of little Yolanda or Fido, no matter how annoying they can be. It is also illegal to tow a boat using a mobility scooter as a man recently found out while towing along the Pacific Highway at Belmont, but I say points for being innovative. Hopefully the courts offer him some leniency for thinking outside the square. Another one that should be noted is keeping left unless overtaking, though I think there should be an exception to this one. Have you ever been in the right lane and some moron in a hotted-up car is tailgating you because you are actually doing the speed limit, but you can’t move across safely, and yet he keeps his bonnet just a hair’s breadth away from your bumper because he is not an Angry Bird, but an Angry Man, with Angry Man issues. In this case, you just have to stand your ground until it is safe to change lanes. You can’t let him intimidate you, because he is not really intimidating, he has just been watching too many episodes of Animal Kingdom and he thinks he’s Pope, but he’s not, he’s actually Nigel from the tax department. Music, Memories and Acoustic Vibes from Mad Wax Sami By Margie TIERNEY
IF you love the music of Ganggajang, and the cult surf movie Mad Wax, then the only place to be next Saturday night is the Tea Gardens Hotel. “I’m really stoked,” Hotel owner Ben Hanson said, “I grew up with the movie and the Band’s music.” “The Band arranged the instrumental music for the movie in the mid 80’s and it was so right, so well chosen for the surfing,” Ben said. “The Band’s songs are still popular,” Ben said. “There’s ‘Gimme some Lovin’, and ‘Sounds of Then’, probably better known as ‘This is Australia’.” “Now the band’s here in our Pub, we’ll be screening Mad Wax, I can’t believe it.” Also looking forward to the night and the memories it will bring back, is Tea Gardens resident Michael Hohensee, a

Michael wrote the script and co-directed Mad Wax during a period when Mad Max feature movies were creating massive waves of a different nature. “It’s a fun movie with quality surfing and fabulous music, “ Michael said, “I think it wears fairly
well, especially after 30 years.” Mad Wax, was filmed in Australia, Hawaii, Tahiti and France and was acclaimed for its originality with a fresh approach to the accepted surf movie genre of the day. You can catch all the action at the Tea Gardens Hotel on Marine Drive on Saturday 19 January.

Gorilla Season Underway Tilligerry Social By Trevor DAVIES
EVERY year Karuah’s male bowlers, morph into ‘Gorillas’ as the Club Championships get underway. The championship is teams of 4 with a position on the honour board on offer and kicked off this weekend last. Max Rosser, Games Secretary and activity controller said, “The self selected teams all really want that spot on the honour board and play gets pretty cutthroat.” Forty eight players and twice that many spectators gathered on Sunday to watch some first rate bowling. The green was magnificent and the weather perfect. The competition was fierce. Max said, “some tried and proven teams took on some new combinations and upsets were there.” Among other results, Gordon Latimore’s team of champions, winners of multiple years past got done by Brendan Revell’s newly formed
team while Tom Mulley’s team of big name bowlers just pipped Marty Mills’s team of roughies on the last end. Emotions, while good natured, ran high. Cheering and applause often broke out in the spectator area, with all the action of games being played on different rinks, sometimes difficult to follow. Of course, decorum had to be maintained and two umpires were used to keep passions under control. One of the Newcastle Districts senior Umpires,
who was playing, John Bilby said, “The two umpires did a great job of keeping the games on the rails and ensuring the rules were always observed.” The two Nationally accredited Umpires, Peter Joass and Trevor Davies maintained a watchful and supervising eye on all activities ensuring that all fun had, was “regulated”. Head along to watch some great bowls. Ring the Karuah RSL Club to check when the Gorillas are playing.

Port GromSearch hopes for Clayton-Brown By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephen surfers will be represented along with some of Australia’s best and most promising young surfers in the Illawarra region next week to contest the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final presented by Flight Centre. The Bay’s Elle ClaytonBrown will join over 50 aspiring professional surfers from all over the country who will contest the three-day event, which will run in the Illawarra region from the 15 January. With parallel Rip Curl GromSearch Series being held in over 10 countries, the series has become a crucial stepping-stone in the development of junior surfers right across the globe. It is a tribute to Elle Clayton Brown’s technique and ability
q Elle Clayton Brown carving it up. Image supplied by Surfing NSW.
to be a part of this international youth sporting event. The list of previous GromSearch winners illustrates the prestigious history of the series, with World Surf League (WSL) competitors Gabriel Medina (Brazil), Tyler Wright (Australia), Owen Wright (Australia), Matt Wilkinson (Australia), Jordy Smith (South Africa), Kolohe Andino (USA) and Sally Fitzgibbons (Australia) among the list of former competitors and GromSearch International Final Champions. Ellie Clayton-Brown is considered one of the regions’ best female surfers. In 2018 Elle Clayton-Brown came second in the Surfing NSW under 19 year old girls All Stars competition. For the Clayton-Browns surfing is a family affair with Elle’s brother Mick also from Port Stephens taking out youth titles in the sport this year. The Australian series is made up of five events as well as a National final. Participants for the National
final are determined from the GromSearch ratings, counting a surfers best 2 results across the series. Elle and her brother Mike surfied in the Hydralyte Sports QLD Pro Junior Presented by Hyundai competition last weekend at North Stradbroke Island. Elle was ranked 7th in the competition. Their father Mark Watson told News Of The Area, “It’s an extremely expensive sport and we are very thankful to Kim Burton and Port Stephens Toyota for their support.” Surfers have to start young to get a ranking and both Clayton-Browns’ are keen to become top of their sport. Parents Mark Watson Sue Ellen Goyne are committed to seeing Elle and Mike’s surfing dreams come true. “We travel around Australia to the competitions in a caravan; in the next few weeks they will surf at competitions in Wollongong, Maroubra and Lake Macquarie,” he said. The Clayton-Browns are just some of the up and coming surfers based in the Bay with Josh Stretton shining in Stand Up Paddle events.
