Federal Election announced and key dates leading up to it FROM Page 1
Electoral Commissioner Tom Rogers said all Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the 18 May Federal Election. “Enrolling and voting is compulsory. If you are not enrolled, you can’t vote in the 2019 Federal Election,” Mr Rogers said. “Australians must also update their address details on the electoral roll if they have moved, or changed their name. If they’re not sure of their current status – check
online via the AEC website or call us on 13 23 26. “A record 96.5 per cent of eligible Australians are currently enrolled, which is an extraordinary achievement. At the same time, there are still people who remain unenrolled who need to take action before
the deadline of 8pm Thursday 18 April.” The best and quickest way to enrol or update your details is to visit www.aec.gov.au. Australians unable to go online can pick up a paper enrolment form at any AEC office or Australia Post,

TOMAREE High School offers several different learning pathways for students. One of which is the Big Picture. When students participate in Big Picture learning they build a portfolio of work for their HSC focused on career outcomes. These portfolios are used to gain access to University degrees, traineeships and more. Jack Brooker is 17 years old and is currently completing Year 12 at Tomaree High School. As a part of his Big Picture
Project Jack is completing a Certificate III in Screen and Media at TAFE. Jack has an interest in acting, cinematography and journalism. Jack told News Of The Area, “I’m a Hardworking person who enjoys what I do. “My strengths include my creativity and my knowledge in Digital Technology. “I’ve been interested in the Media Business ever since I was young. I was one of the protagonists in my friends movie he made for his YouTube channel. Jack has been a Big Picture student for the last 2 years and
thoroughly enjoy this style of learning independently and through his passions. “I would love to gain a mentorship in my interest area to help increase my chances of further employment in the creative and filming industries,” he said. Jack has gained valuable experience, skills and knowledge also through the TAFE course. He plans to complete the Diploma in Screen and Media once I have finished my HSC this year. Stephen Jennings of Tomaree High School said, “Allowing students to build a portfolio of their work rather than study various subjects works better for
some students, offering different learning programs helps us ensure all students have the best opportunities.”

ANZAC Day throughout the Region
By Marian SAMPSON
ANZAC Day is a commemoration of the sacrifice Service Men, Women and animals from Australia and New Zealand have made during times of war. It is deeply seated in Australia’s sense of nationalism and identity and forms part of our local identity, with the Bay hosting US troops for training during WWII. ANZAC was born in the trenches of Gallipoli where mateship, ingenuity and the true grit of the troops from Australia and New Zealand were sorely tested. On 25 April ANZAC Day will be celebrated around the Country. Russell Durrant, the Honorary Secretary of the Nelson Bay RSL Sub-Branch told News Of The Area, “In Nelson Bay a Dawn Service will be held in Apex Park. Marchers will assemble at 5.30am with the ceremony commencing at 5.40am.
“Following the Dawn Service there will be a hot breakfast served at Wests Nelson Bay Diggers provided to returned and uniform personnel free. Members of the public are welcome to attend for a fee of $5.00.” The Nelson Bay ANZAC Day March will step off from the Nelson Bay Bowling Club at 10.40am down Stockton St to the Memorial in Apex Park with the Service commencing at 10.50am. “After the service a luncheon will be held at Wests Nelson Bay Diggers, starting at 12.00pm. Uniform personnel free, others may attend for a fee; Sub-Branch members $15.00, Serving Members with ID $15.00 visitors and guests $30.00, everyone is welcome,” he said. A Dawn Service starts at 5.45am at Tilligerry RSL Sports Club and at ANZAC Park in Raymond Terrace with the Tilligerry ANZAC Day march stepping off at 9.40am from the South Gate on the Avenue of Allies, Tanilba Bay.
The March will precede down Lemon Tree Passage Road to the Tilligerry RSL Sports Club where the main Service will start at 10.00am. There will be dawn Services at 6am at Bulahdelah at the Cenotaph and in Pacific Palms at the Community Centre. A March will be held at Bulahdelah at 10.30am from Crawford Street followed by an 11am Service at the Cenotaph. As always there will be the dawn Service at ANZAC Park on Marine Drive at Tea Gardens beginning at 6am. A breakfast will follow at the Tea Gardens Country Club followed by another service at ANZAC Park starting at 10am. Former NSW Governor, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair will give the Address. President of the Tea Gardens RSL Sub Branch, Terry Munright said, “After the service at ANZAC Park, there will be a lunch at the Country Club, followed by the traditional afternoon of Two-
Up.” Tea Gardens commemorates ANZAC Day with a 10am March from Ogden Street and an 11am Service in ANZAC Park. In Raymond Terrace Servicemen will form up at 10.45 am for the March at Sturgeon Street, Raymond Terrace, between Glenelg Street and William Street marching to ANZAC Park where an 11am Service will be held. In Seaham at 8.45am a March will form up in Seaham Weir Park and March to the Memorial on Newline Road where the Service will be conducted. In Karuah, they’ll be gathering at 5.45am at Tony King’s Garage, old Pacific Highway, for the March to Memorial Park for the Dawn Service. Ladies Probus Club Changeover By Marian SAMPSON
THERE’s a special group of ladies in town who are busy spreading their own variety of friendship and fun. The Tomaree Ladies Probus Club holds events for ladies and some other events where spouses are welcome. The ladies recently got together and held their Annual General Meeting followed by their Change Over luncheon at Nelson Bay Bowling Club. The lunch was the highlight of the day with the members all tucking into a wonderful meals and talking
about what the Club will be doing over the next 12 months. Retiring President Wendy Bowden, was warmly thanked by incoming President Mary Judge. Denise Clark has taken on the Secretary role replacing long serving Secretary, Daphne Smith. Kitty Phipps retains her Treasurer’s position. Julie McAllister, the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club’s Publicity Officer told News Of The Area, “We welcome all ladies the opportunity to come along and find out about what we do, and of course to consider
joining us.” This friendly Probus Club meets monthly on the third Wednesday morning at Nelson Bay Bowling Club and welcomes new members to join them in fun and friendship on trips and outings and hear interesting speakers. Julie encourages ladies to give up one morning to come along to a meeting, have a coffee and a chat and explore a connected retirement with the Ladies of the Nelson Bay Ladies Probus Club. Interested ladies should contact our club Secretary Denise at 4981 1151 or President Mary 4984 9344.
Macquarie. Ann Gibson told News Of The Area, “Phil and Petah Dodd did a great job of organizing all the activities and outings; not an easy task with a big group.” No stone was left unturned with visits to Sea Acres Rainforest Walk and Café, wine tasting and lunch at Cassegrain Winery and back to base for
the first round of the Boule’ run by the Guru of Boule’, George Hammond. The group visited Wauchope Farmers Market, followed by Ricardos Tomatoes & Strawberries for tour and lunch. More boule’ were played and then everyone gathered for the very popular cocktail

The Happy Hour room overlooked the river and was a very pleasant time of day to be sipping cocktails and chatting to friends. Then it was up and off to the Maritime Museum Artists Market, and a guided tour of the Koala Hospital which was a very interesting visit. The hotly contested Boule’ finals won by John Townsend and Ken White in the men’s pairs and Cathy Lindsay and Ann Gibson in the ladies. “There was lots of encouragement and advice
from the sidelines,” she said. There was also trivia with Quiz Master, Brenda and hilarious entertainment on the side by Russel. Unfortunately the weather closed in and the visit to the Astronomical Observatory had to be abandoned so back it was for more Happy Hour and BBQ dinner. Everyone celebrated the journey with a huge last day with the traditional ‘Big Aussie Breakfast’ organized by Ann & Carol. o you have a pressing problem, annoying anxiety or community conundrum? Jasminda Featherlight, our resident roving Agony Aunt, is here to help. Jasminda will be responding to questions from readers throughout the circulation area of our FOUR News Of The Area papers on a rotating basis. SEND your concerns to Jasminda care of media@newsofthearea.com. au and include your title, initials and suburb. Dear Jasminda,
What is the best way to get my teenage daughter to keep her room clean and tidy? Every time I go in there it is like a pig sty.
“IS IT BEST TO WAIT UNTIL I FIND THE PROPERTY I WANT TO BUY BEFORE SEEKING FINANCE SO I KNOW HOW MUCH I NEED, OR SHOULD I SECURE MY FINANCE BEFORE I START LOOKING?” THE importance of this issue cannot be overstated. In the wake of enquiries and complaints, banks and non-bank lending institutions have significantly tightened mortgage lending, not only by way of approvals, but also borrowing amounts. Information is power, so it’s vital you know where you stand. The last thing you want is to locate and fall in love with your dream property, only to find that your borrowing power falls short of the price point. So, when you think it might be time to make a new purchase, become a first-time owner-occupier or investor, the smart thing to do is to make an appointment with your lender – or meet with a few lenders – to discuss your potential borrowing power. When you’ve found the lender that best suits your needs and budget, secure written pre-approval, so you’re good to go when you find the property of your dreams! Hope this helps Denise

In response to “Reality Check” opinion
Dear News Of The Area,
FOLLOWING the letter from David Bruce (News Of The Area 11 April, 2019 ‘Time for a Reality Check’), let us consider a few ‘reality checks’. The Climate Study Group published in “The Australian” 5/3/2019 a graph showing the actual measured temperature rise over the last 40 years to fluctuate from 0⁰ to under 0.3⁰ and now tending down. The same graph shows the PREDICTED temperature rise to just under 1⁰, shades of the discredited “hockey stick” graph. Other scientific papers show CO2 levels in the past of up to four times the present, but only AFTER temperature rises. Conditions of the planet’s weather go in cycles, we are at present cycling 10,000 years out of an ice age and can expect to

Unfortunately young Cr Arnott has not had the benefit of experience and obviously does not understand the damage of “loose lips sink ships”. Rodney Kerr
Dear Mrs KJ, WHAT is it about kids and their bedrooms? I don’t understand why they like to inhabit a hovel. I mean, how hard is it to hang up a few clothes, put the others in the wash and pull up a quilt? Not very. Since you have a teenage daughter, I have some useful suggestions. Teenage girls love to hide notes and diaries and half-eaten chocolate bars, and overdue assignments, so what you need to do is tell her that unless she does the basics, you will be going in there and rifling through everything in order to make sure it is put back in the right spot. She definitely won’t want you fossicking through her things. The next suggestion is to threaten her with device removal if she doesn’t keep her room clean. This is pretty much the same as telling her you are going to amputate one of her limbs, and should be successful. The final option is to gather all the rubbish up from her room and put it into individual boxes – clothes, school work, perfume, clothes, shoes, jewellery, electronics, you name it, whatever is on the floor, put each item into a box, and then she has to barter chores with you to reclaim it, not knowing what each box contains. This could be a nice little bonding exercise. At the very least, it will be fun for you, though probably not her. Hope that helps,
“And being found in fashion as a man, He (Jesus) humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross.” Blessings from Lynne Miles

have a warming effect. Human pollution may have a detrimental effect on human health but is questionable on its effect on planetary wellbeing. The great kerfuffle of the CO2 menace started with an American student’s PhD paper. Such papers should submit their data for peer review. This paper never was, and requests for it to be done are vigorously opposed. The assumption in this paper was seized on by the scare-mongering media and the likes of Al Gore. Any questioning of the scare- mongering CO2 publicity is shouted down. The science is not yet set in stone and a free and open dialogue is necessary. Henry Cox HDA Hawks Nest

Community Library to get a makeover TILLIGERRY Community Library will be temporarily closed for much-needed renovations from midday Saturday 27 April to 10am Monday 13 May. First established in 1982, the library is managed by Port Stephens Council and staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers. Council’s Library Services Manager Kris Abbott says these renovations will reinvigorate this important community service. “The renovation of Tilligerry Community Library is muchneeded and well overdue. This service has been a valued part of the local community for 37 years, so it’s certainly in need of some TLC. “The library was originally furnished with donated second-

hand shelving, bookcases, desks, furniture and curtains. It was even decorated with paintings and photos donated by the local community. “Port Stephens Council has been successful in receiving funding from the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Program. This grant, together with funds from Port Stephens Council, will enable us to complete the refurbishment. “The makeover will include internal painting, new shelving, furniture and fittings. Most importantly, it will include a new range of items for loan, which have been donated by our three other Port Stephens Library branches. “Port Stephens Council is
Carpe diem, Jasminda. proud of Tilligerry Community Library and the team of dedicated volunteers who keep it running. “As well as a place to borrow books, the library is also a place where the community can come together, have a chat and catch up on what’s going on. This makeover is a small way that we can say thank you and show the local community we care,” Ms Abbott said.
About Tilligerry Community Library The library was first established in 1982 as the Tilligerry Deposit Station in a small room in the then Tilligerry Community Centre. In 1997, it moved to its current location in Meredith Street, Lemon Tree Passage. In 2000, it changed its name to the Tilligerry Community Library. The library is currently open 2 hours a day, Monday to Saturday. The library is well used and loans over 1,000 items per month.

I’d encourage anyone thinking of applying to come along to get some tips on developing your idea and writing the application. “Each year, I’m impressed by the standard of applications and the creativity we have here in Port Stephens. This year’s show is host of the inaugural Brumby 250 where four horse trainers from New South Wales have put all of their skills to the test for the past 250 days to train four Snowy Mountain brumbies, going head to head as they battle for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. and ensuring everything runs smoothly for both trainers and the Brumbies, “To ask people to take care of and train a wild horse for 250 days is a massive ask, especially in such a devastating drought, but everyone jumped at the opportunity. ‘We have just been astounded with what the trainers and the Brumbies have achieved.” They will compete at Stroud Show on 26 April in the led and ridden Brumby classes and Saturday the 27 April is the grand finale being the freestyle competition where the trainers will use their imagination to showcase everything they have taught their Brumby over the past 250 days. Hannah Pikkat, one of the trainers said “This has been a fabulous learning experience.

“I’m nervous about the finals but I’m also very excited to show what the Brumbies can do and what I have taught Gypsy,” says Hannah who has also opted to keep her Brumby after the Tournament is finished. The show also has a wide range of food stalls, arts and crafts, and produce. The K9 jumping is sure to be a hit with dogs scaling walls of up to 2m. Add to this the program of barrel racing, ute muster, demoderby, post splitting, animal nursery, rodeo, fireworks, prized produce and lawnmower race and Stroud has the makings for a wonderful show. This weekend Stroud will be showcasing family friendly fun alongside with plenty of country hospitality and spirit to share.

Bowls Club
Strong Results
By Marian SAMPSON
THE ladies from Soldiers Point Ladies Bowling Club has been doing the Bay proud with several strong results. Lorraine Cloke, Publicity Officer for the Club told News Of The Area, “We are very proud to announce our Team of Adele Pearson, Vicki Marshall, Jackie Williams and Pam Smith, were the winners of this 2019 District Event. “Runners up were also from Soldiers Point, those being Pamela Stephens, Alison Moxey, Vacie McIntyre & Betty Herbertson.” The Club also claimed place in the District Fours Championships with the team of Jan Sutherland, Melissa Witts, Maria Barrett & Cheryl Field achieved Runners Up in this event to Natasha Scott’s team from Raymond Terrace. Natasha Scott’s Raymond Terrace team also proved their dominance in the District Open Triples Championships with Jan Sutherland, Vacie McIntyre and Betty Herbertson taking out the Runners Up position. “District events are played between all the Women’s Bowling Clubs in the Newcastle District annually so “to have these three teams reach the finals is great.” Being Runners Up is no mean feat in these Championships, it illustrates that our teams are continually knocking on the door just waiting for it to open as I am sure it will in the future.” The ladies recently held a Group 2019 Pennant Bonding Day which included a game of Bowls, followed by a motivational discussion regarding the general etiquette and rules of the game which gives all a reminder and an update of any changes to the rules which have occurred since the last Pennant Season. This year, the Soldiers Point Ladies Bowls Club has seven Pennant Sides - eight players to a side - all excited to start the season. “All Club Members were involved whether playing Pennants or not for as we know the backbone of your Club are the stalwarts who support and work tirelessly sometimes without recognition. “Where would we be without those girls who set tables, sell raffle tickets, run the social games during Pennants and are ever ready to impart their wealth of knowledge when needed,” she said.

IN Port Stephens High Schools students get a plethora of choice when it comes to sport. On top of the traditional swimming, soccer, hockey and football there are a wide range of choices. Sport is a way to exercise both the mind and the body and maintain fitness. Participation in sports that are enjoyable sees greater engagement for students in the school sports programs. At both Irrawang High School and Tomaree High School students can grab
a fishing rod and reel and spend their sports time potentially catching dinner. In Nelson Bay the students fish the break wall where they stand a chance of catching luderick, and bream. Around Raymond Terrace, the students fishing for sport can catch species like flathead and bream. At Irrawang High School when planning the year’s sporting activities, sports staff try to keep as many activities as local as possible to support and engage with their local community.
