Runway upgrades for Airport FOLLOWING a Mayoral Minute from Mayor Ryan Palmer, Council pledged its support for runway upgrades at Newcastle Airport to enable further expansion for the region. Aligned with the Greater Newcastle Future Transport Plan, Council recognised the strategic importance of Newcastle Airport to drive growth in tourism, exports and local economies for the future of the region. In raising the Minute, Mayor Palmer said Newcastle Airport is a critical gateway to both Port Stephens and the greater Newcastle region. “As a region poised for growth, now is the time for Council to solidify its support for the airport’s continued
expansion.” “To achieve this, upgrades to both the airfield and terminal are not only necessary but critical in providing foundational opportunities to enable the airport to grow. Currently, Newcastle Airport has a once in 15-year opportunity to seek funding for the strengthening of the existing runway to enable larger capacity aircraft to utilise the airport.” Mayor Palmer said, “We know the airport has capability to service International routes, driving strong economic outcomes for our area and alleviating existing pressure on Sydney International Airport. Investing in
runway upgrades at the airport opens the door for a strengthened visitor economy, new jobs and savings for locals who will no longer need to travel to Sydney Airport.” “As Council, we will continue to advocate strongly for these crucial upgrades of Newcastle Airport, expediting critical regional drainage improvements to facilitate additional defence and airport related development within the Williamtown precinct. We are committed to driving significant and sustained long-term social outcomes and economic benefits for the people of Port Stephens,” Mayor Palmer

Heritage Book Launch A MAGNIFICENT clear autumnal day greeted invited guests as they gathered at historic Tanilba House for the much anticipated launch of a new book. ‘History & Heritage of Tanilba House’ is the result of meticulous research by the Port Stephens Historical Society and was unveiled by Cr Paul Le Motte from the Heritage advisory Committee. Acknowledged also were Society Patron Professor John Ramsland, his wife, Professor Marie Ramsland and current owners of the historic homestead Deirdre Hall and Glenn Short. Several Society
members and contributors were also praised for their contributions. Deirdre explained to those gathered how she and Glenn had painstakingly restored the interior of the old home to its former glory, and detailed the landscaping initiatives which now showcase the property. Society President Denise Gaudion outlined the historical narrative of the book which has unearthed new information about the house, its occupants and the times in which they lived. The book is now on sale at Tanilba Post Office and the Society’s home base in the
Old Lemon Tree Passage School. We will review the book once we have time to digest the contents in detail. Although Tanilba House is not open to the public, the guests were given a private tour after the official launch. Deirdre and Glenn currently have plans before Council to use the grounds of the property as a function venue. An ‘Open Day’ for the general public will be held once these plans are approved. We will keep you informed.

“WOW!”: This was the reaction of regular borrowers when they walked through the door to our new look Tilligerry Library after its $5000 makeover. New books, new curtains, wicker furniture, new carpet, state-of-the-art shelving and a modern office layout greeted the eye. Standing in for Mayor Ryan Palmer, Library Services Manager Kris Abbott praised the efforts of local volunteers
and community workers who assisted with the upgrade. This included the donation of new curtains, removal of old shelving and restoration of the gardens at the front of the building. Little was wasted with the old shelving being donated to other grateful community groups. A recent decision of Reilly v Reilly demonstrates the importance of acting in the best interests of the principal (i.e. the person who appoints the attorney). In that case Mr Reilly granted an Enduring Power of Attorney to his wife. After doing so, Mr Reilly was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He subsequently died however prior to his death Mrs Reilly (acting as his attorney) transferred one of his farming properties to their daughters for nominal consideration. Previously Mr Reilly had executed his Will and in that Will, he left the property to his son. Mrs Reilly was aware of the contents of the Will however she was of the view that the property should be transferred to the daughters rather than passing to the son under the terms of the Will. In a hearing before Justice Lindsay in the Supreme Court it was held that the wife had committed a “fraud on the power”. Her actions in

transferring the property to the daughters were contrary to the prior wishes of the husband. The wife appeared to be more interested in ensuring fairness between the children. She disregarded the wishes of her husband and appeared to rely on the power she had as attorney for her husband to transfer the property even though she was well aware that that was not what her husband wanted. The decision was appealed and the appeal was dismissed. Justice McFee stated that the wife “was in her capacity as (the husband’s) attorney seeking to do what she thought was in the best interest of the family, rather than what was in (her husband’s) interest”. An attorney must always act in what he or she perceives to be the best interest of the principal. The attorney cannot put their own interests (or that of a third party) ahead of those of the principal.

Old Times Return to King Street
By Heather SHARP
CROWDS gathered once again at the annual King Street Heritage Festival, Raymond Terrace. Now in its fifth year, the event competed with the Federal Election for attendees, and although the usual representatives were unable to attend due to Election commitments, the day was still a resounding success. With warm weather, people were happy to stay for longer and enjoy the old fashioned games, entertainment, interesting stalls, and dress ups. A new feature of this year’s Festival was antique dealer, Dave from 2nd Time Around,

offering appraisals for people’s special items. Ms Kaye Newton, organiser of the King Street Heritage Festival told News Of The Area, “A highlight was to see just how many adults were having a go at the games provided by Sanjex Seratti.” “There were plenty of simple games for children but it is lovely to see young and old having simple fun together.” “There was more variety of musicians this year while still adhering to the theme of stepping back in time to
traditional instruments and acoustic music.” “Fernando Torres was a newcomer who sang traditional songs of the Andes in Spanish.” Largely run by volunteers, the Festival received some sponsorship from the Port Stephens Council Cultural Fund. MarketPlace Raymond Terrace once again provided prize vouchers and also helped to promote the event in its lead up. A donation of $500 from
the Raymond Terrace Bowling Club was put towards hiring a disabled portable toilet in addition to the regular ones, and the purchase of some marquee seats. For the first time, Bunnings sponsored the event through free kits and paints for children to make up wooden windmills and paint them. My husband and I both vote for the opposite side of the political spectrum. He is now in a euphoric mood and I am having an existential crisis? How do I handle it?
Which is best, Private Treaty or Auction?”
Mrs HA, Tea Gardens
IN strategies have pros and cons. With no-time-limit, Private Treaty gives vendors more negotiating power with buyers, plus flexibility to include conditions such as ‘subject to sale of buyer’s property’. Additionally, PT is cheaper from a marketing perspective, so the financial outlay isn’t as heavy. However, it may take longer to sell your home and of course the period for ‘inspection disruption’ is greater with the open-ended time frame. An Auction’s finite time frame creates a sense of urgency with buyers and its’ inherently competitive nature means there is no price barrier. Vendors determine a reserve and settlement date to suit and open-house inspections permit vendors to arrange their lives during the campaign. Additionally, there are three opportunities to sell: pre/ auction-day/post. However, marketing costs are generally higher than PT and you’re committed to them even if your property fails to sell. Vendors that are private people may be uncomfortable with crowds walking through their home. As an Agent, it is my role to guide you to the right strategy for your market area, home, budget and lifestyle needs. Hope this helps Denise

Bob Hawke, Drawing A Close By Paul DORIN (Cartoonist)
POLITICAL cartoons have a long history in Australia enriched by the luxury of having politicians with great features and personalities for a cartoonist to draw. Labor’s longest-serving Prime Minister Bob Hawke featured in thousands of cartoons during his four terms in parliament. A survey of the nation’s cartoonists once revealed Hawke as the most popular Australian prime minister to draw. Since 1983, when Hawke became prime minister, he has been my all-time favourite character and political figure to draw. He provided plenty of “inspiration” for material. I loved drawing him; he could be created from a simple line drawing to a detailed caricature. I could draw him with my eyes READING:
shut. Hawkie had great cartooning features, his mouth had this permanent scowl and eyes lay aggressively beneath his eyebrows. You only needed to draw his eyes and
eyebrows to recognise who you were drawing. The other distinctive feature was his immaculate silver hair. Cartoonist favourite: RIP Bob Hawke.
q Cartoonist favourite: RIP Bob Hawke
Psalm 63: 3 KIND Blessings from Lynne Miles
Dear Mrs HA, I REMEMBER many years ago going to pre-marriage guidance sessions with a Catholic Priest, even though I wasn’t Catholic. At best I was a lowercase agnostic with a Church of England education. I don’t really remember what these sessions involved, but I’m pretty sure he didn’t ask about our attitudes towards politics. Anyway, he ended up taking a leave of absence after session two, potentially because he could sense my hostility at having to endure marriage advice from an unmarried priest so I could get married in a brick Catholic Church complete with graffiti, instead of on the beach. The same could be said for people without children who tell you where you are going wrong with your childrearing. Advice is always easier from a comfortable, illinformed distance. Which brings me to your election question. This is a challenging one, because the two main parties are so ideologically disparate, that it can make you question your shared values, your outlook on the world, your ideas about what is important and what isn’t. It can make you swat down his proffered democracy sausage because you are a vegetarian worried about the extinction of 1,200 animal species. It can make him ask how you can vote for a party that doesn’t have a solid economic backbone. It can make you both argue about these points as you walk past cheery men and women selling cupcakes. That is the nature of democracy. It is about being able to vote for your individual, closelyheld beliefs, even if they conflict with those of your spouse.
“Because Your kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise You.”
