Premier Visits Businesses whilst in Town By Marian SAMPSON
IN a very relaxed walk through the Premier visited the central business district of Nelson Bay. News Of The Area was exclusively invited to participate in the walk through. The Premier visited the township on Tuesday afternoon and took time to walk into local businesses and chat with the owners. On the list of businesses in the Bay that the Premier visited were Bella Rose Boutique, OPAAT Health, and Arteke Salon Collective. Premier Gladys Berejiklian told News Of The Area, “It’s not often I can just visit a township and visit local businesses like this.” The wonderful boutique

Council’s General Manager Wayne Wallace said, “Nelson Bay Road has remained a high priority for Council over several years. “Council’s advocacy to the State Government for this Election will see the next step of the road duplication completed,” he said. The Premier emphasised the fact that investing back into the community with projects like the Nelson Bay Road duplication, is a direct result of the hard work that the Government has done to build a strong budget. Liberal Candidate Jaimie Abbott said, “This is a big win for Port Stephens: it will improve road safety, removing some of the bends and alleviate dangerous points on the stretch of the road.”

Tilly Gets Arty
Tilligerry Arts Group Inc. run exciting school holiday programs to encourage children to enjoy their own creativity.
By Kelly MAY
THE children of the Tilligerry Peninsula have enjoyed expanding their artistic horizons these school holidays. Fortunately they have had the Tilligerry Arts Group Inc., fondly known as TAG close by to guide their structured creativity. The group was formed over eleven years ago, by a small group of Tilligerry artists and craftspeople who saw a need for a local art network to provide encouragement and support. Due to the group’s popularity, their membership has now expanded to embrace members from the wider Port Stephens and Newcastle area. The group run a variety of art sessions and courses from their gallery located in the old Lemon Tree Passage Rural Fire Brigade building. During the summer school holidays the group has concentrated their focus on children’s art. The group is fortunate to have children’s art teacher, Donna Ling on board.
TAG Inc. Gallery Manager Jannine Deneen told News Of The Area, “We have been privileged to have Donna Ling provide lessons this holiday.” “We are hoping that this can be repeated in other school holiday periods.” The group also has a papercraft teacher who has provided classes for children to broaden their artistic interests. Ms Deneen said, “She is very talented and
experienced in papercraft.” “The groups she ran last year were enjoyed immensely by the children who participated.” With the return to school just around the corner, many children are gathering stories to share with their friends. Ms Deneen said, “We hope the classes will give children a love of all things arty and start them on the life’s path of enjoying their own creativity.”

Fire Ready By Marian SAMPSON
BEING Fire safe is more important than ever for residents in Port Stephens. The region has suffered through major fires in Mambo Wanda Wetlands, Fingal Bay, Tomaree Headland, Medowie at Lemon Tree Passage and the list goes on. Current weather patterns, and global warming along with the very nature of the Australian bushland dictates that more fires will follow. Daniel O’Meara Captain of the Soldiers Point Rural Fire Service (RFS) told News Of The Area, “There are lots of things residents should do to plan for a fire, you shouldn’t be planning for a fire when it is raging, you should be

planning now for events that may happen in the next five years.” There are some great resources for residents to use to make sure that they are fire ready and some simple things around their homes. These include cleaning out the gutters and having metal gutter guards in place as well as metal fly screens and not plastic ones. Residents should check for their nearest fire hydrant and make sure that it hasn’t been turfed over. Fire hydrants are indicated by H. P. and H. R. signs on power poles or marked on gutters. “Once you find the fire hydrant open it and make sure it is clear, if you can’t open
it call the local NSW Fire Service and they will send a team around to check it for you,” he said. It’s also important that cars are not parked over fire hydrants. For those with gardens the type of mulch you use should be considered, particularly if you are near bushland, choosing pebbles over a combustible mulch could help to save your property. Trimming, gardens, mowing and removing waste is also an important factor in making your property fire safe. Residents should follow the information on the firesnearme app and website or ABC radio when fires are burning, not local RFS Facebook pages as the RFS may well be too busy fighting the fires to update their individual Facebook pages.
vessels like the radio base are manned by volunteer crews with some members on 24 hour call out for at sea rescues. During operations in 2018 the radio base managed 255 marine incidents and made and received a massive 15,900 radio calls. These calls can be anything from a radio check to a vessel reporting its
departure or arrival into port and onward destinations. The volunteers in the radio room also made and received 16,100 phone calls and managed 1100 Rural Fire Service communications. Marine Rescue Port Stephens manages communications for the Rural Fire Service (RFS) Hunter Valley and Lower Hunter Valley at night time.

Spreading A Love For Books By Kelly MAY
ENSURING every child is given the opportunity to learn to read is something Swan Bay resident, Hazel Wheeler, feels very strongly about. In an effort to bring stories to all children, Ms Wheeler began a book drive collecting second hand books for the less fortunate or isolated children of country and outback New South Wales. Previously, Ms Wheeler volunteered for the ‘Stories in the Street’ program in Raymond Terrace. Ms Wheeler told News
Of The Area, “I heard that the inability to read is a big problem inland due to the shortage of books.” With help from relatives and friends donations have gone to children in some of the smallest single teacher schools west of Narrabri. Ms Wheeler said, “So far we have taken approximately fifteen boxes out, however there is still much work to do to reach more isolated schools throughout New South Wales.” Unfortunately the donations have began to slow and Ms Wheeler is
having to buy the second hand books herself to ensure the children are not left without. Ms Wheeler is asking the people of Port Stephens to help her gather children books they no longer need or use. The Centre at Karuah is the main drop off location for donations between 9:30am and 3pm Monday to Friday and 2pm on weekends. Aussie Home Loans Raymond Terrace have also come on board as a drop off location for the month of February.
It is hoped that a drop off location in Medowie can be sourced for March. Ms Wheeler said, ”Books will be checked for suitability before distribution.” “Thank you to everyone who is able to positively contribute to the education of our disadvantaged children who are still suffering through the drought.” For more information about donating or becoming a drop off location please contact Ms Wheeler on 0428814246.

10 Challenges, 10 Months, $10,000 By Kelly MAY
TEN challenges in ten months to raise ten thousand dollars. Medowie grandmother Monique Bortoli is attempting ten extraordinary challenges to raise money and awareness for people affected by domestic violence. The funds raised will go directly to the Yacaaba Centre, a front line organisation in Port Stephens helping people get in safe homes and start rebuilding their lives. All challenges will be personally funded. Ms Bortoli told News Of The Area, “The challenges range from ultra marathons to adventure races, leading up to the most important challenge of the ten.” “Seventy-nine laps of Mount Tomaree, approximately 174km, one lap in honour of every lady who has lost their life to domestic violence in 2018.” Using her passion for adventure sports Ms Bortoli will speak out against family violence encourage others to do the same. Ms Bortoli said, “I will support, encourage and inspire people affected by domestic violence to get out, get safe and recover their lives, and I will involve my community to make this happen.” The first of the challenges was a 60km stand up paddleboard in Myall Lakes, which was completed on Saturday 19 January. Ms Bortoli said, “The weather was perfect for the first couple in hours, then the southerly created chaos for us.” “It was very hard work and we were sometimes even traveling backwards.” Ms Bortoli said, “We raised $2235 for the Yacaaba Centre on my first challenge.” “Now I will rest, recharge and reset for the second challenge in four weeks.” The remaining nine challenges are: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

Street Food Social By Kelly MAY
IF you build it they will come. To some this is just a famous movie line, but to the organiser of Street Food Social, Jess Rowarth, it has become reality. Boyd Oval in Medowie played host to the second social event of this kind last Saturday (19 January). With a welcoming cool change the Medowie residents came out in force to enjoy and support the event. There was something for all taste buds and dietary requirements. Savoury cuisine included paella, nachos, Vietnamese, and burgers, while desserts were on offer in abundance with macaroons, ice-cream, eclairs, and churros. Choux Patisserie owner, Tara Poelaert said, “It was really nice to do this or the first time in Medowie.” “It is lovely to able to do something in smaller areas.” Relaxing on rugs picnic style, the growing crowd enjoyed the vocals of local singer Arlen Black. Jumping castles ensured the children were able to burnoff the extra energy. Medowie teen, Hayley Carmody said, “The festival was a great opportunity to catch up with some friends and to relax with some awesome music.” Medowie resident,
Nicole Gentle said, “There was an amazing range of delightful food, with a relaxed atmosphere perfect for a family friendly get together.” Street Food Social was an idea born from the well known Sacred Tree Markets. Ms Rowarth told News Of The Area, “We noticed a demand for this type of event receiving endless calls and requests about what food we were having at the markets.” “We are ecstatic and loved going out to Medowie.”
Ms Rowarth said, “We are so excited that the community embraced the social event, ideally we would like to run them about four times a year throughout Port Stephens.” “To do this long term we may need to seek corporate sponsorship, so for now we are gauging a response from the communities.” The next Street Food Social will be held at Fly Point Park in Nelson Bay on Sunday 27 January.

Port runners on track for Japan Marathon PO Box 8271 Bundall Qld Australia 4217
TWO local women will soon have the opportunity of a lifetime to represent Port Stephens at the 39th Wakashio Marathon in Tateyama, Japan as part of an annual marathon exchange. Amy Hansen of Anna Bay and Catrina Thompson of Corlette will participate in the Wakashio Marathon on Sunday 27 January thanks to assistance from Port Stephens Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee. Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee Chairman Nigel Dique says the runners will be put up in homestay accommodation and will have the opportunity to experience the Japanese way of life. “As part of the marathon exchange, our local runners will be home-hosted for five nights to experience the unique Japanese way of life. “They will also meet Mayor Kenichi Kanamaru at a civic ceremony, learn how to make traditional Japanese

Mayor Ryan Palmer says Port Stephens Council is proud to support this unique cultural experience. “Port Stephens Council has a strong relationship with our sister city Tateyama, and this marathon exchange is an important part of our longstanding friendship. “This is much more than just a run — it’s an opportunity
for participants to learn from others, experience something completely different, and form lasting friendships and memories,” Mayor Palmer said. “I wish Amy and Catrina all the best in Tateyama and I know they will do Port Stephens proud,” he added. Council and the Port Stephens Sister Cities Committee provided each participant with $300 to help cover airfares, passport costs, meals and other travel costs.
showed us the hot spots on a chart and their advice was spot on,” said Craig. “Squid was the favoured bait. We also caught some sharks and a nice little snapper,” he added. “We are staying at the local Holiday Park for a fortnight and will be out on the water most of the time.” “We might even try our luck crabbing in Tilligerry
Creek,” he said. Reports of good hauls of mud crabs from the upper reaches of Tilligerry Creek, Oyster Cove and Limeburners Creek have been filtering in. Currently, with the export market from Asia paying top dollar for this much sought after delicacy, Sydney wholesalers are asking as much as $90 for a 1kg crab mud crab.

AFL President With Big Plans By Heather SHARP
PORT Stephens AFL Club is looking to expanding under the direction of new Club President, Mr Darren McKimm. Part of a sports-mad family who are devoted AFL followers, Mr McKimm told News Of The Area he is looking forward to the joys and challenges of presiding over the Club. “We cover from Fern Bay, Williamtown, Raymond Terrace, Medowie, Lemon Tree Passage, Tanilba Bay, and up to
q Noah McKimm focuses on the game.
Karuah.” The Club which has been running for almost twenty years, currently has Auskick for 5 to 12 year olds, U9s, U11s, U13s, U15s, U17, and a senior women’s team. The women’s first season was in 2018 and have worked hard to form a cohesive and competitive team. “Considering about half of the women have never played before, they did really well,” Mr McKimm told News Of The Area, “One of my goals as President is to form a senior men’s team in the next two to
three years.” Mr McKimm’s young sons are also part of the Club, motivating his decision to stand as President. Mr McKimm said, “My boys both play for the Club and I enjoy watching them play.” “We are a family focussed Club.” “AFL is an exciting game to watch live.” Encouraging more people to play, Mr McKimm said, “It’s good for fitness, our Club offers a friendly environment, and the coaches are approachable.”
