ANZAC Service At Tomaree High School By Marian SAMPSON

THERE are some communities that are greatly connected to the defence of our great nation Australia more than others. Port Stephens stands proudly among those communities. The students and staff of Tomaree High School came together to recognise the defence community and, of course, ANZAC Day. Stephen Jennings of Tomaree High School told News Of The Area, “School Captains Dan Villamanca and Katerina Nicolopoulos with Flight Lieutenant Donna Watts-Endresz and student Madi Munro laid a wreath at the School’s Lone Pine Memorial during a moving ANZAC Day Service.”

q School Captains Dan Villamanca and Katerina Nicolopoulos, with RAAF Flight Lieutenant Donna Watts-Endresz and Madi Munro who was the student speaker at the school’s ANZAC Day ceremony.

ANZAC Day Commemorated at Tomaree High School FROM Page 1

Madi Munro spoke at the Service as did the Flight Lieutenant, recognising one of the key days that commemorates the spirit of Australian and New Zealand Service Men and Women and acknowledges the sacrifices made especially by those who have given their lives in the service of our Nation. Many of Port Stephens residents are servicemen and women attached to the Williamtown RAAF base. With these people who Serve, are their families, the Wives, Husbands and importantly the children of those who have chosen a career which secures the future of our nation. There is no doubt that being an area which is a defence community has many challenges and benefits. There is the rotation of families in and out of their

q The School ANZAC Day assembly. Bay postings, which sees students regularly moving from school to school, and of course there are the job opportunities, not only within the Australian Defence Force but in the industries that support it, including the new aerospace centre at Williamtown. Tomaree High School students were made aware of the many job opportunities within the Defence Force after the Service. To this community from school through to retirement there are many who have Served, whose Mothers and Fathers continue to Serve. We will remember them.

Boomerang Park Proposal By Marian SAMPSON

SOME are wondering what the real benefit of the postponement of Council’s decision about the potential residential development for older people in Boomerang Park will achieve. Councillor Le Mottee told News Of The Area, “The report was included in the business paper without any prior knowledge of the Councillors. Normally a briefing session would be held before including anything like that in the business paper.” “As far as I was concerned at the time when this first came up, it was never about making money for Council, it was about finding somewhere for seniors living as close as possible to the CBD.” The community can rest easy to some extent about a proposed development as, “The resolution of Council was NOT a resolution to proceed with the proposal to rezone part of Boomerang Park, it was to put it on hold for 3 months while other options are investigated.” There are other factors at play regarding the proposed development for Boomerang Park, including considering other sites like the current Raymond Terrace Council Depot. Councillor Le Mottee also believes that the proposed development needs to be considered in the context of the Raymond Terrace / Heatherbrae Strategy before deciding whether or not to

q Community Members are keen to save historic Boomerang Park from Development. proceed with the planning proposal at Boomerang Park. “I iterate and reiterate that Council’s resolution, simply put that matter on hold for 3 months: it did not progress the matter in way, cost the rate payers any money or tie up any staff resources,” he said.

Councillor Arnott is opposed to the proposed development. He said, “The people of Raymond Terrace have been very loud and consistent in demanding that Boomerang Park be saved from rezoning, subdivision, sale and development. “I look forward to continuing

to support the people of Raymond Terrace, and continuing to support the ongoing existence of a historically, culturally and environmentally important part of our town,” he said. One thing is certain, we have not heard the last about the future of Boomerang Park and a Seniors development.

Remember colleagues who have fallen

MEDOWIE Rural Fire Brigade will join Firefighters around the world on the first Sunday in May to pause and remember colleagues who have fallen in the line of duty. International Firefighters Day, also named St Florian’s Day after the patron saint of firefighters, was created in 1999 after tragic deaths of five Victorian firefighters battling a bushfire near Linton, about 120 kilometres west of Melbourne, in 1998. For firefighters at Medowie Rural Fire Brigade (RFB), the day provides an opportunity to pay respect to their fallen colleagues. The respect firefighters have for one another crosses the Classic Sudoku 132 boundaries of the specialities within profession - be in using To solvemany the puzzle, all the blankthe cells must be filled it from urban,1 to rural, ADF,number volunteer numbers 9. Members of the public and neighbouring fire services are invited to attend. “The intent of the day is to remember our fallen but also take the opportunity to engage with our community.” Medowie Station will also join the international “Sound Off” – the sounding of station siren for 30 seconds at noon (local time). The Sound Off is an international event with fire departments and brigades around the world also participating at their local noon. This will be followed by a minute’s silence with the fire station flag at half mast. The event starts at 11:30am on Sunday, May 5 at the Medowie RFB Station – All are welcome.

Adventure Playground Tanilba Senior Citz PORT Stephens Council staff have now completed stage one of the Caswell Reserve makeover, which is a link in a chain that will eventually see the peninsular encircled by pathways and boardwalks. This ‘Grand Plan’ comprises part of forward looking proposals contained in a White Paper submitted to Council. It is available for perusal in a document titled ‘Tilligerry Forward’. This was developed by Cr Steve Tucker and

Kevin Colman OAM after consultation with a broad range of local interest groups. Caswell Reserve now has an adventure playground beside the Bay with safe swimming at its edge. The new amenities block is complete and functional. Stage 2 will see the demolition of the old toilet block, an opening up of the area for passive recreation and the addition of a disability friendly pathway. This will be constructed from the Billy’s Beach viewing

platform across the front of the Reserve and bridge the creek. There will be a rebuild of the boat ramp. Trailer parking has already been provided. Local Gandparents Kevin and Linda Scott were some of the first residents to take advantage of the new facilities. The Lemon Tree Passage couple found it an ideal place to amuse their three Grandchildren Jamie, Natiri and Tali who were staying with them over the holidays. They had travelled down from the Blue Mountains.

Hold Open Day

By Marian SAMPSON

THERE’s a well kept secret in Tanilba Bay which allows local seniors to engage more with their community. The Tanilba Bay Senior Citizens offers locals a place to connect and engage in conversation, craft and even some sport. The Centre offers a range of activities and has assets ready to be used including a full sized pool table. There is an Open Day being held on Wednesday 1 May from 9-1pm. Fay Kelly told News Of The Area, “There will be an array of demonstrations and activities on the day including demonstrations on spinning and weaving, card making, macramé and jewellery making.” The day will also see a bric-a-brac table and craft table with treasures to buy, a morning tea for a gold coin donation with a Mother’s Day raffle with a $100 cash prize for first place. The Open Day is designed to showcase the

q Tanilba Bay local Fay Kelly at her weaving loom. Centre and its offerings to those older residents in the community who would like to connect, have a place to talk and enjoy each others’ company, while enjoying some activities. “If we get positive interest

in the demonstrations we are hoping to hold some workshops where the seniors of Tanilba Bay can learn how to make jewellery, cards, macramé spin and weave,” she said.

Talented Locals

By Marian SAMPSON

THE talent of our local artists never ceases to inspire. Many of these artists call the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre a second home. Joy McLeod is one such talented artist. Her works will be featured at the Centre until 7 May. Joy has always been fascinated by making marks on paper. Her other great love is music which she studied for many years as well as other creative crafts. Joy completed a three year Showcard and Ticket Writing course at Maitland Technical College where she learned the craft of working with a lettering brush and paint to create eye-catching show cards and

tickets which was a sought after skill before the digital age. In 1990 Joy was fortunate enough to tour England and Europe where she became enthralled with the great Artists of the world. Determined to pursue her artistic talent she enrolled for a semester with John Earle. She then went on to complete a four year Painting Certificate course at TAFE, working with oils, acrylics and mixed media. In 1996 Joy was introduced to water colour and fell in love with this often frustrating, very challenging, but glorious medium. Meryl Miller told News Of The Area, “Joy has attended many workshops and tutorials with notable artists whose work she greatly admires, including Margaret

Wright, Graham Bryce, Joseph Zbukvic, Madeleine Szymanski, Warwick Webb and the late Molly Flaxman.” Joy’s work has been successfully exhibited around the Hunter Valley and has won numerous awards including First Prize in the recent 2019 Port Stephens Art Prize for her work entered into the category Port Stephens Art Prize – Our Natural Environment. Her painting was called “Seascape Boat Harbour”. Joy’s works hang in many homes, commercial and local Government venues both in Australia and overseas. You can view Joy’s work and that of other local artists on display from 10-4pm daily at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre, Cultural Close, off Shoal Bay Road in Nelson Bay.

Probus Club of Fingal Bay Visits Hunter Valley for Wine Tasting

q Everyone enjoyed a sausage sizzle at the picnic grounds behind the Hunter Gardens Shopping Village.

By Marian SAMPSON THE Hunter Valley offers many opportunities for days of indulgence, and Fingal Bay Probus Club selected the Ingenia Holidays Hunter Valley at Cessnock, as a base for a trip to the area. Julia Redlich of the Fingal Bay Probus Club said to News of The Area, “Who can resist visits to the Chocolate Factory at Pokolbin, wine tasting at nearby McGuigan’s Winery, that also included a cheese tasting at the Hunter Valley Cheese Factory?” The group also visited Petersons Winery at Mountview, and enjoyed a superb dinner at the Brickworks Brasserie. “Add in dinner at Blue Thai at the holiday base and a sausage sizzle picnic behind Hunter Valley Gardens Shopping Village where the fabulous shops were investigated, making the trip a real pleasure for

all,” she said. Another day and another wonderful outing with morning tea at Myrtle House Café before Wollombi was explored, the Country Store getting special attention. There was a fine farewell pizza night at Ingenia Holidays’ camp kitchen, safely in the hands of trip mastermind Ross Jennings, aided and abetted by Roy and Geraldine Jeffery. The Probus Club of Fingal Bay meets on the second Monday of every month at 9.30am at the Fingal Bay Sports and Recreation Club, 100 Rocky Point Road, Fingal Bay. Probus offers a selection of activities such as barbecues, a book lovers Club and walking for pleasure. The Club invites a variety of guest speakers and new members, guests and visitors are always welcome. For more information phone 4984 9147.

Salt Ash Pony Club Team Success at Merriwa

By Liz MUDD

THREE riders from Salt Ash Pony Club attended Pony Club NSW State Sporting, Team Penning, Campdraft, Team Sporting and Mounted Games Championships held at Merriwa Showground on 13 to 16 April 2019. The Event saw entries from over 600 riders and horses with the bigger age groups having up to 52 competitors vying for the win. Abbie Lonsdale, Nathan Lonsdale and Alana Buresti represented Salt Ash Pony Club and Zone 25 successfully in Mounted Games, Campdrafting

and Team Penning events. Abbie Londsale, and her horse Chilli, joined with Gloucester Pony Club members Dannielle Channon on Flint and Katrina Channon riding Green Valley Dalray to contest the under 17 years Team Penning event. Great teamwork and the lucky draw of a quiet mob of cattle saw the girls take the title of Pony Club NSW Under 17 years State Team Penning Champions. “We were really excited to win this.” said Abbie. “We’ve had limited practice with drought conditions making cattle difficult to source,

ausing the cancellation of Team Penning and Campdraft events.” Abbie also placed 10 th in her Campdraft event. Nathan Londsale rode his horse Polly in novelty events such as Barrel, Flag and Bending races to place 5 th overall in the Sporting Championship. Alana Buresti and her horse Dynasty teamed up with Wallsend New Lambton Pony Club members Chloe Shultz riding Gus and Teagan Chester on Dolcivita to claim Reserve Champions in the Under 25’s Team Penning competition, a great effort for the team who had not ridden together before.

I'm feeling quite unnerved about turning 50 when I don't feel anywhere near that age. It just sounds so old. How should I approach this? Mrs YL, Hawks Nest Dear Mrs YL, YOU know this problem isn't really a problem when you think about all the people in this world who will never make it to 50. That you are reaching this amazing milestone is actually fantastic. It's evidence that you haven't succumbed to a life-threatening illness. You haven't suffered an accidental death due to circumstances beyond your control. You haven't been swept into the ocean while trying to get a selfie in front of the pounding swell, because you are too mature for that nonsense. You are winning the game of life, Mrs YL. You are a winner. I know it is a cliche, but it really is just a number. I mean Iggy Pop is still swivelling around on the stage in his 70s, Grace Jones is still cavorting down the catwalk in a skimpy bodysuit. The whole notion of what you can and can't do at certain ages has passed. We do, of course, live in a youth-obsessed society, and that doesn't help. People are told by marketers that they need to look younger with smoother skin, fatter lips, firmer thighs, flatter tummies, and on it goes. You can either succumb to this or you can embrace your age and just be the best you can be. Fifty is fantastic when you think about the alternative, Mrs YL. PS: You can always lie about your age. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

Just for kids Win $10.00

Holiday Fun

COLOUR-IN COMP

By Marian SAMPSON

PARENTS are always tested in school holidays with their kids seeking something to do. In Port Stephens there is plenty to occupy school children of all ages and some of the options are even free. Taking the time to explore the local landscape and parks is always a great way to spend time enjoying fair weather. The NOTA’s top parks for kids are Boomerang Park at Raymond Terrace, Neill Carroll Park at Fly Point and Robinson Reserve. All of these parks have skate parks that suit riders of various skill levels. There’s plenty of history to absorb in and around Raymond Terrace as well as at Tomaree Headland where you can walk to The Point and see the torpedo tubes and gun emplacements from WWII. Consider walking up to the top of Tomaree Headland to take in the view or for those feeling less active, drive up to the top of Lilly Hill and enjoy the view out to the Barrington’s and up the coast to Seal Rocks. Children under 16 don’t need a fishing licence to bring home dinner and there are plenty of spots to fish from the shore, although it is a good idea to check the Marine Park zones before dropping a line. Younger kids may even enjoy catching nippers for bait. Local Mum Mel Turner told News Of The Area, “I really enjoy the fish that Harry catches and now he even cooks them for dinner too.” For those with a bigger budget check out sandboarding on the dunes, you can hire boards at the Anna Bay servo, taking in a dolphin-watching cruise, or catch the ferry over to Tea Gardens and enjoy the trip. There’s free entertainment at Murray’s Brewery and plenty of space for the kids to run around while you enjoy a brew or

two. For those into sport, kids can spend hours in the cricket nets perfecting their skills. Wet days can be more challenging and hearing “I’m bored” is not on any parents’ hit parade. NOTA recommends checking out your local library; they have board games and other activities as well as books, ten pin bowling, indoor playgrounds and even checking out what’s on at the flicks on these days. For those interested in being sustainable you can stop off at the Salamander Bay Recycle Centre and pick up a DIY project there. Kids can create something from someone else’s waste.

Australia’s Coastline than any other early explorer.” Among his coastal surveys was one of Port Stephens conducted in 1843. While we were all taught about Captain James Cook and Matthew Flinders, many have never heard of Stroud’s, Phillip Parker King and the work he did in charting the Australian coastline; nor of his contribution to agriculture. The memorial will be officially opened on Sunday 5 May by Father Andrew Sempell Rector of St James Church in King Street Sydney. Jonathan believes that his great, great grandfather’s contribution was not recognised by the early government because he fought against the subdivision

of land in the Stroud area, to development in the 1800’s. The Rear Admiral headed up the Australian Agricultural Company for 10 years and settled in Stroud before passing away in 1856. King was the first, and for many years the only Australian-born person to attain eminence in the world outside the Australian colonies. On 5 May the monument will be unveiled by the youngest direct descendant of Rear Admiral King Charlotte King with a very public with a celebration of King and his contribution to Stroud’s history. Attendees can also enjoy a tour of Quambi House conducted by Brian Eastoe, of Stroud Heritage Conservation Inc. and attend a luncheon ($25pp).

Memorial For Stroud Explorer

ONE of the less famous explorers of Australia was Rear Admiral Phillip Parker King (1791-1856). He was born on Norfolk Island and was the son of Philip Gidley King and his wife Anna Josepha, née Coombe. He is about to be honoured with a memorial in Stroud. PORT Stephens was well represented in the 2019 Billabong Oz Grom Cup with some great achievements from Mike Clayton-Brown in the Under 16’s and Dane Henry in the Under 14’s. Most states were represented in the event, with surfers coming from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and WA.
