brother Harvie is unaffected by XLP syndrome. Currently Kobie is reliant on weekly infusions of immunoglobulins but the treatment is no longer effective and more intensive therapy is required to save his life. “Without treatment we will lose our son,” Kobie’s Mother Ms Kaylene Staader

Sydney for at least three months. Long term treatment with steroids may also be required after transplantation. While being treated, Kobie will be isolated from his siblings and extended family to reduce the risk of infection. His parents are preparing for the lengthy hospital stay and trips to Sydney for treatment but with four other children, spending time away from home is especially challenging. Kobie’s Grandmother,

Suzanne Coglan will move into the family home to care for Kobie’s siblings while Rod and Kaylene take care of Kobie. XLP syndrome is an extremely rare inherited genetic immunodeficiency disorder characterised by a defective immune system. It almost exclusively affects males. Having a compromised immune system means that a simple illness or infection could be life threatening for Kobie. More than half of individuals with XLP syndrome experience an

exaggerated immune response to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). EBV is a very common virus that most people will contract without ill effect but for Kobie this virus is deadly. Mr Rod and Ms Kaylene Staader own Nova Martial Arts at Heatherbrae where Mr Staaer is the principal trainer. Some of the Studio’s senior students have taken on coaching roles to allow Mr Staader to take time away from the business while Kobie is undergoing treatment. “Once treatment starts we

can only hope and stay positive that it will give us a healthy little boy.” said Kaylene. The expenses incurred travelling to and from Randwick Hospital, accommodation in Sydney and providing for the family left at home without their usual incomes will place a huge financial strain on the Staader family.. This prompted Kaylene’s sister Nicole Coglan to start a Gofundme page. Donations can be made at https://www.gofundme.com/ kobie039s-fight-for-life…

Amongst a number of alleged expletives shouted down the line to the Lotteries Official, the woman also said, “You wouldn’t believe how much this means to me.” “I think it’s great when I win over $10, so this is just insane!” In addition to planning a holiday the lucky winner said, “I’ll be celebrating this week.” “I definitely think I will pop a bottle of champagne.” “Then I would love to go up north for a holiday!” “Check out some of the islands.” “I will share some with my

loved ones too.” Annually, Australians spend approximately $20 Billion a year on gambling - mostly on pokies: an average of $813 per man, woman, and child.

While this Raymond Terrace woman is lucky to have won in Lucky Lotteries, the chances of winning are definitely not with the punter.

With a typically Aussie phrase, the shocked woman cried “Are you fair dinkum?” when told she had won $200 000 in the Lucky Lotteries Mega Jackpot Draw. The unnamed woman won the guaranteed 1st Prize of $200,000 in draw 1282, drawn Thursday, 18 April 2019. She said she would take her winnings and go on an overdue holiday. The woman, who wishes to

Port Commemorates ANZAC Day By Marian SAMPSON

THE moving Tributes made as Port Stephens commemorated ANZAC Day will never truly reflect the pain of the loss that families suffer when our Service men and women pay the ultimate price in times of war. Mateship, endurance, commitment and bravery are all traits we think of when we consider the ANZACs. They came from all over a young Nation and they went to countries far away, and this year we commemorated the 104th anniversary of the landing of ANZAC troops at Gallipoli.

Port Stephens Councillor Chris Doohan who once served gave a moving address at Medowie’s Service. Councillor Doohan said in his Address, “Thanks to all whot acknowledged the Parade, and clapped as we marched past. “The feeling of pride during the applauded Parade, never diminishes.” Councillor Doohan asked, “What if every clap you heard this morning, was a bullet whistling passed your head? What if every drum beat you heard was a bomb landing near you or your family? What if every marching footstep, was a filthy enemy

Our Air Force, Our Army, and Our Navy are revered as some of the best in the world. As ever, Australia punches above its weight, but then that too is the spirit of the ANZACS. CONTINUED Page 5

Port Stephens Commemorates ANZAC Day on 104th Anniversary of Gallipoli Landing

Our country, our relatively small population, and the resources they have to support them. “To all of you uniformed men & women standing here this morning, and all those in uniform in Australia or around the world adorned

with our flag, ‘Thanks mate’,” he said. He also asked us to thank those wearing their medals on the left. After all, these men and women are all physical survivors of signing a blank cheque to give their sweat, their mind, their time and their life to this country, and, to you.

He also acknowledged all those wearing medals on the right, who have lost a Service person as the contribution the original recipient of that medal did for our country. Some died fighting, some died helping, but all died with the passion of our country and its freedom front of mind. Port Stephens residents showed once again that we are here , standing proudly with those who served. The Spirit of the ANZACs is alive and well not only in those who continue to serve, but in those who stand respectfully to commemorate ANZAC Day. It is a part of Australia’s DNA.

PORT Stephens has a very active Landcare program which is manned by community volunteers. The Soldiers Point Landcare group works across the area and with the Mambo Wanda Wetlands volunteers to protect our local wetlands and bushland. Landcare is engaged in improving our local environment, working with endemic species to make the environment as natural

as possible. After the recent bushfires in the Mambo Wanda Wetlands there has been positive bush regeneration. Unfortunately the fires also created an environment where weeds can proliferate. The Soldiers Point Landcare Group is holding a working bee on Wednesday 17 May, in Mambo Wanda Wetlands, adjacent to the Salamander Shopping Centre car park. Margaret Lamond told News Of The Area, “We will commence at 8:30 am

meeting at the South West corner of the car park just beyond the shade cloth barrier fence. “We work until 10:30 and then have a cuppa and chat time,” she said. The Group is targeting the weeds with an emphasis on Bitou and Lantana plus they will be removing litter. Our local Landcare groups also target erosion along the foreshore areas of the Bay and planting species that support our local fauna.

IPART has received 685 submissions from Port Stephens residents, the majority of which are objecting to the increase citing a range of reasons, including the lack of benefits to residents from the proposed projects to be funded, financial hardship and above average unemployment rates in Port Stephens. The Tomaree Residents and Ratepayers Association’s submission to IPART called for attention to be given to the region’s poor as the region’s household income sits below State averages, “There are more poor people: 23.2% of Port Stephens households have a gross weekly income of less than $650, compared to 19.7% of all NSW households (ibid).” Port Stephens Council’s ambitious plan to increase rates is certainly controversial. One anonymous submission to IPART said, “In my opinion the Council management lacks direction and is entitlement driven. “Staff are blessed with over generous working conditions including free daily fresh fruit and other meals (some ratepayers can’t

Dumpers Detected on CCTV PUBLIC outrage on social media coupled with CCTV footage has identified the vehicle and people allegedly responsible for the dumping of furniture and other items on the footpath outside St. Vincent de Paul’s charity outlet at Tanilba Bay. A spokesperson for the store said that a description of the vehicle, its number plate and the property address from which the

items are believed to have come have been forwarded to Port Stephens Council and Police. Vinnies thought that the construction of a security fence would solve the dumping problem. As a spokesperson explained, “It was costing us $187 per month for a skip to remove the unwanted dumped goods so we developed a new procedure to improve

Assaulting Police and Resisting Arrest

THREE men have been charged with assaulting police and resisting arrest at a Raymond Terrace pub last week. About 6.45pm (Thursday 25 April 2019), officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended a licensed premises on William Street, after reports of a brawl; with police closing the venue and moving on patrons. A short time later, a group of men returned to the front of the premises and police directed them to move on. The men allegedly refused and became aggressive towards police, during which time a male senior constable was allegedly struck to the head with a glass bottle and punched several times in the head by a 19-yearold man. Two other men, aged 22 and 24, attempted to free the younger man from police, before OC spray was deployed and all three were arrested and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station. All three were charged with offences including ‘fail to quit at a licensed premises’, ‘affray’, ‘hinder police in execution of duty’, and ‘resist arrest’. The 19-year-old man was also charged with assault police, and use weapon to avoid apprehension. They were granted conditional bail to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court on Monday 6 June 2019. The senior constable received minor swelling around his head; however, did not require hospitalisation.

Dear Jasminda,

I’ve just joined a gym and I need to familiarise myself with gym etiquette. Are there any things I should keep in mind?

I have a dog and a cat. What are my chances of being accepted as a tenant?

Until recently, having a pet – anything other than a goldfish or a budgie – consigned you to rental purgatory. Rejection was the norm. If you were accepted, often the best you could expect was very basic accommodation. But now, with so many Australians having four-legged family members, times have changed. Potential tenants don’t need to relinquish their dog or cat in order to secure a roof over their own heads. Generally rental properties are advertised with ‘pets permitted’ or ‘no pets’ so you know what you’re looking at from the outset. A ‘pet bond’ may be asked for in addition to the rental bond in case of damage to carpets, gardens etc. Many tenants provide references from previous landlords attesting to their pet’s good behaviour. Landlords and Agents want good tenants and pets do not necessarily preclude you from securing a lovely rental property. We have tenants renting with their dogs & cats and they have always been treated with respect by both the Agency and the Landlord. At R and R Property, we and our landlords assess every application on its merits and treat everyone with respect. Hope this helps Denise

GOOD on you, Mrs KG. A gym is an excellent place to exercise and most gyms are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, just in case you feel like doing some bench presses at 3am on a Sunday. I mean, who wouldn’t? Gyms can be a bit daunting at first. Some gyms encourage show ponies who like to trot around in full makeup and the latest active wear, but who don’t actually do anything because they prefer to glisten, not sweat, and they don’t want to break a nail or lose a false eyelash mid squat. Other gyms seem to encourage burly men who are literally soaking in testosterone, so I guess the first thing is to choose a gym that suits your vibe. Once there, a few things will keep the experience positive for yourself and others. Okay, this one seems obvious, but you should shower and deodorise before and after exercise. No one wants to engage with a sweaty armpit when they are focusing on swinging a kettlebell. Follow the same standard of hygiene you would when preparing for a Tinder date, because chances are you’re going to get up close and personal with quite a few people. For the same reason, take a towel with you and place it on any benches or equipment before use. A hot groin is appealing in a Rocky Horror clip, but not when it has been leaching into the bench you are about to use. Common sense prevails with equipment. Put it back where you found it. It doesn’t take long and shows that you respect the gym and your fellow exercise enthusiasts. Even though you probably want to swear or moan during some exercises, maybe try to keep it down a bit. Internalise your expletives. It can be disconcerting when someone is grunting like the love child of Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal. The sound level should be similar to making love in a tent. Bite a boxing glove if necessary. Finally, selfies. Yes, of course we want to know that it is possible to be a vegan with a six pack and bulging biceps, but be respectful of Miriam in the background sweating over the prowler sled wearing her ‘Everything Hurts and I’m Dying’ t-shirt, because she doesn’t want to be Insta-famous. Trust me.

Fire Training Keeps Community Safe

By Marian SAMPSON

THE Raymond Terrace branch of Fire and Rescue New South Wales recently undertook a rather different kind of simulated fire and rescue training. The Station had a visit from the Fire and Rescue NSW BA Hazmat Semitrailer. It is one of two specialised training simulators that makes their way around New South Wales to regional areas to ensure that our Fire and Rescue crews have access to the latest and best training

opportunities. The team’s skills were put to the test by running a mock scenario where they responded to a granny flat fire that was heavily smokelogged with zero visibility. Acting Deputy Captain Giacomo Arnott of Fire and Rescue NSW, Raymond Terrace Branch told News Of The Area, “We’re very grateful that the Fire & Rescue Breathing Apparatus training trailer visited our Station this week and provided essential training for our crew. “As the urban firefighting force in Raymond Terrace

and surrounds, Fire & Rescue must maintain and practice our skills when it comes to fighting fires in confined spaces such as houses, units, granny flats or factories. “This appliance gives firefighters an excellent opportunity to train in a makeshift simulated house/ building complete with rooms, furniture and a variety of dummies. “The night was extremely beneficial to us all in maintaining and improving our skills to protect our community,” he said.

Joint Strike Fighter aircraft training NUMBER 3 Squadron from RAAF Base Williamtown will conduct the first training for F-35A Joint Strike Fighter aircraft over Salt Ash Air Weapons Range (SAAWR) from MondayFriday, 6-17 May 2019. Up to four jets will conduct a number of passes over the range for up to two weeks during weekdays only. Acting Commander Air Combat Group, Group Captain Harvey Reynolds, said the initial training runs would involve a series of dry passes over the range, and be followed by gunnery activities. GPCAPT Reynolds said residents living in East Medowie, Salt Ash and Lemon Tree Passage can expect the range to be used intermittently throughout this period.

Thursday, 2 May, 2019

“SAAWR training activities are an important part of the validation and verification phase for the newly introduced aircraft and the aircrew,” he said. “The program will include practicing F-35A weapons loading and unloading procedures, and provide gunnery practice which remains an essential skill for fighter aircrew,” he said. The F-35A aircraft will operate over the range in a similar manner to the F/A18A/B Hornet aircraft. F-35A operations over the SAAWR were assessed and approved as part of the F35A Environment Impact Statement. “Annual use of SAAWR will remain well under the usage allowed under the operational conditions for the range which is a maximum of 115 days each year over a 10 year rolling average,” GPCAPT Reynolds

said. “Air Force has a responsibility to ensure personnel are ready and able to deploy at short notice and this involves necessary air to ground training that is employed at SAAWR,” he said. Every effort was made to minimise any inconvenience to residents during SAAWR training and advised the range schedule could change at short notice due to weather or operational considerations.
