African Immersion

The ambition and compassion is there to see when you meet local Alicia Cameron

By Marian SAMPSON

THE ambition and compassion is there to see when you meet local Alicia Cameron. She has overcome much to be where she is today.

About to embark upon a new journey which involves leading a trip of people to Africa. Following on from a successful immersion trip which she took in 2018. On her first trip to Africa,

Alicia was inspired to do more. Alicia was so inspired that she has recreated the trip to share with others and to make real change.

PBL is based on a common set of values that are determined by the community. Possibly the most notable award this week goes to

Community Turns Out To Clean Up Environment

By Marian SAMPSON

CARING for the unique environment of Port Stephens is something which our community does well. The volunteer clean-up of the Mangroves at Marsh Road in Bob’s Farm is just one example of people turning out to do the right thing. Unfortunately this effort would not be needed of people didn’t dump rubbish illegally into our fragile environment in the first place. The picturesque Marsh Road is lined with mangrove habitat and has sustained a fair amount of illegal dumping and littering for many years. After a huge turnout in

2018 they pulled out 18,000 pieces of rubbish in 5 hours, yet they failed to finish the area of road that was closed off. The Port Stephens conservation organisation Sea Shelter working closely with Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters conducted its second clean up the mangroves in Bobs Farm. Removing illegally dumped and tossed waste. This year cleaning the same area and pulling out a further 7359 pieces in 49 bags the team of volunteers and Sea Shelter organisers felt that they finally had accomplished something significant. The waste was sorted and there were many interesting

finds. Lia Pereira co-founder of Sea Shelter told News Of The q Sea Shelter Volunteer Louise Smith is a Bob’s Farm resident and OCCI Member. Just one of the volunteers who got stuck into cleaning up the Mangroves.

He now leaves the Bay to pursue his career at Shore in Sydney. Over the past eleven years he has worked with this school community and the wider community to enrich the learning experience of students in Port Stephens. He actively participated in the Real Futures Foundations initiatives and the St Philip’s Christian College school community continues to do so, working together in collaboration with the Foundation supporting students across St Philip’s Christian College, Tomaree High School, Irrawang High School and Hunter River High School. He sees his greatest

Along with the development of the new Senior School Academic precinct, car park and Early Learning Centre all of which have presented him with an exciting challenge, and ultimately resulting in a steady rise in the academic results of the students. Dr Tim Petterson told News Of The Area, “It is always a challenge leaving behind people that you love. “The St Philip’s community is incredibly precious to me and it is with some sadness that I say goodbye. “Nevertheless, I am excited by what the future holds. “The school is exceptionally well positioned as it commences its 25th year of educating students on the Tomaree peninsula in 2020,” he said. Married but Competitive Port’s Pottery Barn SOMETHING of a family feud has erupted within the Camm household with Geoff and Judy in heavy competition. The motor-enthusiasts couple continue to go headto-head to see who wins the most trophies for their magnificently restored motor vehicles. Until a couple of weeks ago, the score was two-nil in Judy’s favour but Geoff is closing the gap fast with a win at the local 2019 Motorama. Judy had previously taken out prizes at both Newcastle and Parkes by exhibiting her Morris Minor tray-back. Geoff could probably have scored more wins at the Motorama over the past 14

That changed this year with a special category being reserved for car club members only. Geoff claimed the coveted trophy with his 1955 two-tone Chevrolet. Motorama was an outstanding success again this year and is clear winner as the largest and most popular annual community event on the Tilligerry Peninsula.

THERE’S a hidden barn up on the hill behind The Port Stephens Community Arts Centre which houses a well-established pottery group made up of over sixty members. The facilities in the Pottery Barn are first class including several kilns and many wheels available for general use. With Pottery being such a sought after craft there is a waiting list for the growing number of new members. THERE are some times in life when everyone needs a helping hand. Women undergoing treatment for Breast Cancer that live in the Bay definitely need the help and support of their community. Travelling to appointments in Newcastle while unwell can be very taxing especially if you are busy trying to cope with family, and work as well. To commemorate local groups that help Women Westpac Bank Manager, Jason Russell, responded to an Australia-wide competition

organised by Head Office to recognise International Women’s Day. Christine Walton told News Of The Area, “The request was to nominate a group which helps local women. “Jason immediately thought of Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group Inc as he has worked closely with President Taurie Lalor and her Group in the past,” she said. The submissions went before a judging panel and Jason was successful. Recently Jason presented Westpac’s cheque for $500 to Taurie and her newly-

members: Virginia Smith (Treasurer) and Jan Puckeridge (Secretary). As an organisation the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group is incredibly active supporting local women and they need your help. On 28 December 2018 the Land and Environment Court of New South Wales decided the case of Hourigan v Howard [2018] NSWLEC 1686. The applicants claimed plants along the fence line obstructed sunlight to their property and sought a remedy from the court. The Trees (Disputes Between Neighbours) Act 2006 No 126 [NSW] (“the Act”) empowers the court to “remedy, restrain or prevent a severe obstruction” (Part 2A) of sunlight to a window, or any view from a dwelling (section 14B). The particular plants were found to have an average height of 2.5 m, with some new shoots reaching above 2.5 m. Therefore, Part

NEWS OF THE AREA PORT STEPHENS

2A of the Act applied. Relevantly, in winter only part of the lower section of the affected windows was obstructed; there was no obstruction of sunlight for the remainder of the year. Consequently, the court concluded the obstruction of sunlight was “not severe” and therefore the court could not make any orders relating to the offending trees. If you are considering an application to “remedy, restrain or prevent a severe obstruction” to sunlight to your windows or a view from your house caused by trees on your neighbour’s property, the height of the offending trees must exceed 2.5 m and the obstruction of sunlight must be severe.

Community Hospital Fundraising By Marian SAMPSON

THE Tomaree Community Hospital services the population of the Peninsula and even beyond. Unfortunately not everything that the Hospital needs to deliver the quality of service that the community expects is provided through Government funding. To address this a group of local ladies come together and fundraise to make what can be the worst day of your or your loved ones life that little bit better. Recently the Tomaree Hospital Ladies Auxiliary handed the hospital $25,000 to buy equipment, some of which many of us would presume to be provided through Government funding. Norma Thurle Told News

Of The Area, “One of the big ticket items that the fundraising has purchased was an arthroscope, others have included heart monitors for patient beds.” This week the ladies are out and about at Woolworths Salamander Bay with a Mother’s Day raffle. The prizes include a decadent stay at The Anchorage and some lovely gift hampers. Over Easter there was a craft stall and these ladies work tirelessly to ensure the team at Tomaree Community Hospital have everything they need to meet their patients requirements. Mavis Richardson and Norma Thurle were manning the stall. The Ladies Auxiliary welcome new members who can assist them in their fundraising efforts. The new work that can be seen outside the Hospital is part of the NSW State Governments’ $8 Million Dollar OneHealth facility which will deliver allied health services to the community, it is not an extension of the actual Hospital.

New Ferry Operators

By: Margie TIERNEY

IT’S full steam ahead for the new operators of the Tea Gardens Ferry service to Nelson Bay. Since Teresa and Shane Charchalis took over in December of last year, they’re very pleased to say they’ve only missed two trips and that was due to bad weather. “We’re really enjoying

what we do and the passengers are loving it too,” Shane told News Of The Area. “We’ve got a new sound system on board, so there’s music and often singalongs, it’s just great,” Teresa said. Shane and Teresa have also made a promise to passengers to never leave anyone behind. “In the past, we’ve heard stories of passengers being

stranded, that will never happen now.” The couple has also introduced a ‘Sunset Cruise’ out of Nelson Bay from the start of June. Return tickets are just $20 and its running 7 days a week. “It leaves Nelson Bay at 3.30pm and departs Tea Gardens at 5pm,” Teresa said. “We’re happy for people to

bring their fish and chips on board for the trip back.” The couple is also in talks with a local bus operator hoping to link the ferry with a sightseeing trip that will take passengers around Hawks Nest, Winda Woppa and Mungo Brush.

“We’ve started restoration works on both timber ferries, and will be working throughout the quieter months to re-paint and get them looking much nicer,” Teresa said. “There is a lot of maritime history attached to both vessels, and we would love to

get them heritage listed.” Port Stephens Ferry Service is running three services a day, 7 days a week and you can book online or sms. Ferry Cancellations are posted on their Facebook page from 7.30am.

Dear Jasminda,

My new boyfriend has a thing about feet. He is quite obsessed by them. I personally don’t like my feet being touched because I’m extremely ticklish. Everything else about our relationship is great.

I have a dog and a cat. What are my chances of being accepted as a tenant?

UNTIL recently, having a pet – anything other than a goldfish or a budgie – consigned you to rental purgatory. Rejection was the norm. If you were accepted, often the best you could expect was very basic accommodation. But now, with so many Australians having four-legged family members, times have changed. Potential tenants don’t need to relinquish their dog or cat in order to secure a roof over their own heads. Generally rental properties are advertised with ‘pets permitted’ or ‘no pets’ so you know what you’re looking at from the outset. A ‘pet bond’ may be asked for in addition to the rental bond in case of damage to carpets, gardens etc. Many tenants provide references from previous landlords attesting to their pet’s good behaviour. Landlords and Agents want good tenants and pets do not necessarily preclude you from securing a lovely rental property. We have tenants renting with their dogs & cats and they have always been treated with respect by both the Agency and the Landlord. At R and R Property, we and our landlords assess every application on its merits and treat everyone with respect. Hope this helps Denise

Len Roberts starts Defamation Case

CR LEN ROBERTS has issued “Concerns Notices” under the Defamation Act against a number of people and organisations which he claims have defamed him. The notices refer to articles published in the Manning Community News and various Facebook pages and posts. Cr Roberts is seeking any unlawful defamatory publication or communication to cease, the removal of any offensive material, the publishing of a full apology and compensation for the expense and harm already caused. Cr Roberts is represented by Bromhead Legal in making this stand against malicious and hurtful comment in public debate. Solicitor Greg McInnes

social media trolls and unregulated publishers, I can prevent another family suffering the kind of abuse that my family has had to endure,” said Cr Roberts. “Enough is enough.”

argues that Cr Roberts has served his community with integrity for many years, and agrees the need to prevent others becoming the target of such attacks. “Publishers need to take responsibility for the cruel, damaging and malicious comments they allow to be carried in their publications. “We have a very strong case and recent court judgments have come down heavily upon reckless publications and irresponsible social media posts,” said Mr McInnes. Cr Roberts has drawn comparisons with the ugly attacks made on social media against a Gloucester Dog Pound business, which was recently forced to close after providing a service to that local community for 15 years. “I hope that by taking this strong approach against

“I believe the perpetrators are acting like cowards and that we are striking back for those without a voice,” said Cr Roberts. “I will continue to take the necessary legal steps to protect and restore my reputation in the community I have served for many years.” I would like to thank the many people who have supported me through this difficult time and who knew that the truth would eventually come out.”

Miss HA, Hawks Nest. Dear Miss HA, OH what a rabbit hole I just went down researching this subject. I have never understood an attraction to feet, maybe because I think my feet are probably one of the least attractive parts of my body. My second toes are bigger than my big toes, so there’s a weird asymmetry going on. I’ve also got odd little pinkies. I have reasonably decent gaps between my toes – very handy for a range of dexterous tasks – picking up pegs (or pretty much anything on the ground), back massages, taking the caps of bottles, but probably not as aesthetically pleasing as toes that huddle together. Yet, there are those who clearly have a foot fetish. Who can forget the photos of Fergie’s toes being sucked (not me, that’s for sure). Women who had their feet bound suffered incredible pain, having their toes broken in order to resemble the lotus (and a whole raft of other perverse reasons that aren’t suitable to relay in a community paper). There are social media sites specifically for people who are into feet (who knew?). Yes, it is a strange old world out there. Now, if you really don’t like your feet being touched, and if the whole ‘I’m ticklish’ thing just encourages your new man, perhaps you could turn him off by telling him you have a rather undesirable foot condition – there’s a raft of them – corns, bunions, Plantar Fasciitis, Athlete’s Foot, Plantar Warts, Diabetic Foot Ulcer . . . . That should dissuade him. Good luck, Miss HA. Personally, I’d be getting cold feet.

Nelson Bay Hockey Club Dominates On U18 Rep Hockey Team FROM Page 16

Unfortunately the team lost both games; 3 nil and 4 to 1. Cathy Churchill coordinator for the team told News Of The Area, “There was a great goal scored for the team by Carlin from a short corner. “Beau was outstanding in defence, working tirelessly. “Jordan MacDonnell fast and skilful as a striker, making strong inroads into defence every time he had the ball. “James Rowland the Goalie was brilliant in goals, quick and light on his feet. “All players were on the ball and played well today.

“The score didn’t indicate how close the games were,” she said. While Ros Shirlock said, “The Hunter Representative Team, travelled to attend Hockey NSW State rep championships, they played well as a team.” “The boys were wonderful representatives for the Hunter region. “A big thank you to Cathryn Churchill for her coaching and the Manager Juliet O’Rourke. “We’d also like to thank Hockey NSW for their support of the U18 Hunter Boys team,” She said.

Ready to assist your business! office@perpetualbookkeeping.com.au By Marian SAMPSON THE Hunter Representative Under 18’s Hockey club is dominated by players from Nelson Bay Hockey Club with only two players on the team from other clubs. They played at the Northern NSW U18s State Carnival on the weekend. Whilst other regions are struggling to field teams NB hockey is able to send away representative teams in all age groups most years. The club is rightly proud, for a small club, they are over represented at State level. Many of the boys are in the Hunter Sports Academy training squad and enjoyed having the opportunity to show off some of their skills against the best in the state.
