Our Citizen of the Year By Kelly MAY BEN Niland, awarded Port Stephens Citizen of the Year on Saturday, 26 January has a long affiliation with the area. He moved to Port Stephens as a young child in 1989. Mr Niland now calls the area home with his Wife Nicole and newborn son Lachlan. As always the nominees included many notable members of the Port Stephens Community. Mr Niland said, “I’m humbled, there were other nominees just as deserving of the honour.” The Award recognised Mr Niland for his volunteer work and most recently the ‘Bale out the Drought’ fundraising initiative that raised over $80,000 to help farmers in need.

As the 2018 Citizen of the Year, Mr Niland intends to continue his volunteer work, leading by example and encouraging others to get involved. Mr Niland told News Of The Area, “I think volunteering is rewarding and good for one’s mental health, so I would encourage everyone to think about what they might be able to do to improve their area, and act on it.” Expressing deep gratitude for the recognition Mr Niland spoke fondly of the support of his family. Mr Niland said, “I must thank Mum and my late father for instilling in my brothers and I a sense of community and playing our part to improve it.” “They set a good example which I try to live up to even today and one which I will pass on to my son Lachlan.”

FOR MANY four and five year olds, this week marks a major milestone in their short lives. They will be starting Kindergarten, their first year of primary school, or ‘big school’ as so many of them call it. Starting at St Peter’s Primary School, Stockton this year will be Medowie student Xander Miller. With a big sister already at school, Xander is familiar with the school routine. He says he is looking forward to starting school because “I can see my friends and eat lunches.” Xander also understands the learning side of

Caswell Reserve Celebrations

AS both the temperature and humidity rocketed, one visiting family from Glen Innes headed to Tilligerry for the recently upgraded Caswell Reserve at Mallabula. With five young children in tow they thought that it would be a great place for an Australia Day. By getting in early they hit the jackpot, securing the waterfront shelter shed with its electric barbecue.

Others followed, setting up shop in the shade of the ti trees and playing cricket on the freshly mown grass. Meanwhile, in Henderson Park, celebrations were in full swing as the Lions Club big breakfast did a roaring trade. Live bands kept the crowd entertained. The face painting and jumping castle amused the children whilst the local Car Club drew many curious onlookers to inspect

the magnificently restored classic cars. Waterfront restaurants were packed with both visitors and locals alike. So what does Australia Day mean to us? The Donnelly family said, “Celebrating our history. Patriotism, Looking forward and coming together.” “A Long Weekend and a chance to do nothing.”

SENIORS week sees a host of activities across Port Stephens and the Seaside Singers are gearing up for their free Seniors Week Festival Concert. The Concert entitled Love Your Life is accompanied by an afternoon tea which will cater to 100 over 60’s in the Seascapes Room at Soldiers’ Point Bowling Club on Friday, 22 February from 2.00pm. The singers theme this year is “Singing for Health”. Jeanette Antrum

Kayaker found safe but dehydrated

President of the Seaside Singers Told News Of The Area, “The Seaside Singers are encouraging seniors who like to sing to come along and join our community choir.” No auditions required to join the choir, just a love of singing. “The rewards of joining the group are huge, with the opportunity to meet new friends, reduce the loneliness caused by social isolation and experience the wonderful feeling as the endorphins released by singing together, flood through your body,” she said. The Seaside Singers meet at the Community Centre at

Tomaree every Tuesday night for 2 hours from 7.00pm. This year’s concert will feature some fun songs and a couple of the songs the group learnt in Japan, which they recently toured, as well as the usual sprinkling of songs that seniors know and love. Only 100 places are available so would be concert goers are advised to book early and certainly before the 15th February. Enquiries and bookings to Jeanette Antrum on 0418266393, or by email to jaf.antrum@gmail.com

Facelift for TAG By Kelly MAY

NEW year, new look. On Saturday 26 January, Tilligerry Art Group (TAG) celebrated the official unveiling of their new facade. After the initial move to their new location on Meredith Avenue in Lemon Tree Passage, into the old Rural Fire Station, the local community joined forces

to help the group make their vision come to life. Most notably were five Tilligerry businesses who provided their very welcomed services. Lene Twomey of Norsk Design worked very patiently with committee members to design and develop a website. Nat and Jim Robertson of JN

Industries Property Improvements stood by through the many design changes for the glass windows and doors. Lauren Dennison, a local Activities Organiser worked with Bunnings Taylors Beach and Dulux Sales Executive, Michelle Wilmott, securing a donation of paint supplies to transform the old Rural Fire Station from khaki

green to the now vibrant yellow, red and black. TAG Gallery Manager, Jannine Deneen told News Of The Area, “This work is something that as a group we are very proud of, transforming the Gallery from ugly duckling to magnificent swan!!” Certificates of appreciation were presented to Alan Steane for his artistic creativity in designing the facility’s new look. Thanks go to Lauren Dennison for her tireless efforts in securing the much needed exterior paint. Ms Deneen said, “Our next dream is for an air conditioner for the main gallery space as it gets extraordinarily hot in summer and cold in winter.” The day of celebration included many artist of varying disciplines from across the region and beyond. Entertainment was provided by the local Ukulele Group companying a good old fashioned sausage sizzle.

TAG is run by volunteers who have one major thing in common: a love for artistic creativity. Ms Deneen said, “It is very exciting to welcome newcomers into our midst, to see their work, be it art, craft, sculpture, photographic, jewellery or whatever else, and to include them in our programmes.” More information about TAG and the programmes they run can be found on facebook or their website.

Texture, Colour and Intensity

By Marian SAMPSON

CREATIVITY comes in many mediums and this month’s feature artist at the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre is one who explores different mediums for texture, colour and intensity. Meryl Miller of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre told News Of The Area, “Marianne Newton signs her work as ‘Yanney’.” Creativity is central to Marianne’s approach to life. After completing secretarial studies, Marianne advanced her ambition in the creative art world of clothing design at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, in Canada. “Her ability with textiles resulted in her successful career in business both in Dressmaking and Soft Furnishings. “After retirement she expanded her creative side by pursuing art as her passion,” she said. Her individual application of colour and design feature in all of her art works. Texture with the use of various media, namely acrylic, inks and pastels underpin her style. Marianne signs her works ‘Yanney’, which, is harks back to her Dutch heritage.

Leading the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre ”Pastel Meet” a group that has grown to ten enthusiastic artists who meet on the second Wednesday of the month. Marienne works with the Pastel Meet Group exploring their creativity, while enjoying comradery and the delicious homemade cake provided by Marianne. Membership at the Gallery is open to members of the community. If you would like to find out about membership and the classes available to those wishing to explore their creative side, pop into the Gallery and speak to the members who are

on duty. Together with Judy Jones and Nada O’Loughlin-Yonge, Marianne is a Gallery stylist ensuring that our six weekly Exhibitions reflect our members’ work in the best possible way. Marianne is a member of the organising committee for the 2019 Port Stephens Art Prize which will open at 6:30pm on 15 March. To enter the art prize visit https://artscentrenelsonbay. org.au/art-prize-2019/ entries close on 15 February 2019. Fire Station a permanent 24/7 facility Bundall Qld Australia 4217

Port Stephens MP Kate Washington earlier this week announced that 16 of the additional 200 firefighters will be posted to Salamander Bay Fire Station, allowing it to become a fully operational 24/7 Fire Station for the first time

A DALEY Labor Government will make the Salamander Bay Fire Station a permanent 24/7 facility for the first time, with an additional 16 permanent firefighters for the Bay area. NSW Labor this week announced an additional 200 permanent firefighters across the State, including 116 more firefighters for regional areas in New South Wales. NSW Shadow Emergency Services

Minister Guy Zangari joined Port Stephens MP Kate Washington earlier this week to announce that 16 of the additional 200 firefighters will be posted to Salamander Bay Fire Station, allowing it to become a fully operational 24/7 Fire Station for the first time. Salamander Bay Fire Station services the growing area of the Tomaree Peninsula, including Nelson Bay, Salamander Bay, Anna Bay, Fingal Bay, Soldiers

Point, Corlette and Shoal Bay. The station currently has a mixed model of onduty firefighters and on-call (retained) firefighters. The commitment will see Salamander Bay become a fully operational 24/7 Fire Station – a significant boost to fire and emergency protection on the Tomaree Peninsula. The commitment comes after Mr Zangari and Ms Washington hosted a roundtable meeting with local community groups and

business representatives in May last year to discuss local emergency response times and the unique fire risks facing the Bay area. Attendees at the roundtable included representatives from the Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association, Tomaree Business

Chamber, local Aged Care facilities, local community and sporting clubs, and the Firefighters’ Union. Since then, Port Stephens has experienced a number of serious fires that have placed homes and properties at risk, including the most recent Mambo Wetlands in Salamander

Bay. Kate Washington MP said, “Port Stephens has hardworking firefighters who are all committed to keeping our community safe. I’ve spoken with local firefighters, and I’ve spoken with local residents and businesses, and they’re all keen to see this station manned 24/7.” “Our communities have seen these firefighters in action in recent months and know how important these extra firefighters will be to keep everyone safe into the future,” she said.

The Eagles Show By Kelly MAY

THE Eagles are one of those bands that has an appeal that is both universal and enduring. Since forming in 1971, The Eagles have won six Grammy Awards, had countless chart-topping hits around the world and, in 1999, their Greatest Hits album won the Award for ‘Best Selling Album Of The Century’. The songs themselves have transcended generations to become

iconic to millions, still today. The Eagles Show ‘The Heart of the Matter’ has become widely acclaimed for their authentic renditions of Eagles classics and the Band follow up their 2018 Hunter shows by returning in 2019. The Heart of the Matter will take you on an incredible musical journey through the career of The Eagles, featuring classics such as Take It Easy, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Hotel California, Witchy Woman, Heartache Tonight, The Long Run and many more.

Lead vocalist Paul McGovern’s unique voice, akin to that of the legendary Don Henley, takes audiences back in time with the beautiful vocal harmonies responsible for creating the incomparable sound of The Eagles. ‘Heart of the Matter’ is undoubtedly one of Australia’s most popular tribute shows. Appearing at Nelson Bay Diggers on Saturday 9 February, this is a show not to be missed by any Eagles fan. Tickets are available direct from the venue.
