INSPIRING: Carter’s story brings awareness THE story of the Medowiebased Goodwin family whose son Carter has cerebral palsy will help raise awareness of the life-changing impact that projects, enabled by Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation have at a grassroots level, in a new campaign that launched on Monday, 25 March. The campaign, featuring Carter and his Dad, Alex, will celebrate the capacity for projects funded by the Charitable Foundation to ‘help rewrite the future’ for people facing disadvantage, marginalisation, or isolation. Alex said his family’s participation in the campaign enabled them to help other families realise there are people and organisations

within their community who are dedicated to helping them overcome adversity, and realise a better future for them and their loved ones. “We’ve had one hell of a journey: from the elation of Carter and his twin sister Milla’s early but uncomplicated arrival into the world; to the moment where the doctors told us that Carter has contracted a virus leading to him being diagnosed with cerebral palsy and my wife asked the doctors through tears whether Carter would ever walk; to now being able to enjoy all the things he can do, and the goals he can achieve. NSW RFS Superintendent Martin Siemsen said all members of the public must still abide by the law when conducting hazard reduction burns. “Even though a fire permit is no longer a requirement, residents must still notify their neighbours and the local

support network. “As Carter’s family, our main capability is in just loving and supporting him unconditionally – which we’ll always do – but it takes organisations, funding and technology to come up with solutions to help kids like him to achieve all they can. For him to be a kid first, and be free to put his disability second,” Alex said. With the help of Cerebral Palsy Alliance and the Charitable Foundation, Carter’s family has access to the Wizzybug, a first wheelchair. The Wizzybug enables Carter to explore and develop his spatial awareness and fine motor skills. It has also enabled Carter to join in with his siblings when they’re out riding their bikes. Charitable Foundation Acting Chair Jennifer Leslie said the

Goodwins’ dedication to sharing their story was overwhelming. “The Charitable Foundation supports projects which have a genuine capacity to make the future better for people facing disadvantage, isolation or marginalisation. We’re so grateful that Alex and Sam have given their time and have been vulnerable in sharing their emotional and inspiring story of how their lives have changed. “Each case study in this campaign shows how profound the impact can be on the life of people and families who’ve benefited from just one of the Charitable Foundation’s projects. I’m amazed to think about how many futures have been rewritten by Charitable Foundation projects during its

15 years, through more than $19 million in funding to enable nearly 450 projects,” Jennifer said. “The organisations and groups delivering the projects funded by the Charitable Foundation work tirelessly to understand how they can best improve the lives of the people they serve, and are the true heroes in our community. Every day Cerebral Palsy Alliance provides programs and support to families and people living with cerebral palsy that help families, like the Goodwins, overcome the day-to-day challenges and achieve anything they set their minds to. I congratulate Cerebral Palsy Alliance on helping Carter’s family to create a very bright future for their amazing little boy,” Jennifer said.

fire authority 24 hours before burning,” Superintendent Siemsen said. “People should also check whether they need a Bush Fire Hazard Reduction Certificate, and have sufficient equipment to control and contain the fire to their property. Superintendent Siemsen said landholders are encouraged to proactively reduce fuel loads on their property while ensuring burns are conducted safely and legally.

“Every landholder has a responsibility to prevent fire from spreading from their property and there can be serious consequences for people who light fires and leave them unattended. Superintendent Siemsen said the local community should not become complacent to the danger of bush fire now that the danger period is officially over. “I urge all residents to take the threat of bush fire seriously and prepare their families and

homes now,” Superintendent Siemsen said. “Your local fire station or Fire Control Centre can provide advice on how to safely undertake hazard reduction work, and how best to prepare yourself, your property and your family for the next bushfire season.” To arrange a Bush Fire Hazard Reduction Certificate, or a free environmental assessment, contact your local Fire Control Centre.

Snack n Study for Students

At Irrawang High School Snack n Study (Homework Centre) students are receiving nutritious afternoon tea, compliments of Café Irrawang can make a big difference

By Marian SAMPSON

FOR some students, finding the right time and place to tackle their homework can be as daunting as the tasks themselves. At Irrawang High School Snack n Study is helping

students by providing not only a time and place but also some healthy snacks! Lue Fagan of Irrawang High School told News Of The Area, “The Irrawang High School Snack n Study (Homework Centre) is located in the school

Library and is held every Monday afternoon from 3.15pm until 5.00pm with students receiving nutritious afternoon tea, compliments of Café Irrawang. Students aren’t left on their own without support

either. “Snack n Study is staffed on most days by up to six teachers who happily stay with the students to provide additional support with homework tasks, assessments, improve numeracy and literacy skills

and access to technology located in the state of the Art Library,” she said. Snack n Study is something students can use for weekly tasks or for their major projects. Being in the library with teachers on hand to help

in the quality of students assignments. Students from all years have used Snack n Study which is just one more way that the staff at Irrawang High School are going the extra mile for their students.

Bay Beauty’s Ms Galaxy Bid

By Marian SAMPSON VANESSA Lim is an Advocate, a Model and an Actress who is also a NSW finalist in two International pageants Ms Galaxy Australia and Ms British Empire Australia. Vanessa’s tiara is shining brightly and should she take out either division at the Nationals, she will be competing on the International stage in Florida, USA for the Ms Galaxy Pageant and in Sri Lanka for Ms British Empire. There’s more to being

crowned than looking glamorous in a gown at these events, and contestants raise funds for causes which they feel passionate about. Vanessa is currently raising funds for Run Against Violence, and Make a Wish Australia in an effort to secure a crown. Vanessa told News Of The Area, “I’ve been ranked 30,955 out of over 8,000,000 Actors and Actresses over the world, according to the IMDbPro STARmeter, and have only just started acting since (just before) last Christmas, with

my first International feature film, Risen, by Eddie Arya, to be premiered later this year.” You can support Vanessa in her fundraising and pageant goals at EveryDayHero, where you can find her Make A Wish Foundation fundraising page. The Make A Wish Foundation grants wishes to seriously ill children. Vanessa has been a volunteer in our community and some readers may remember her from her time volunteering on Port Stephens FM.

Call to ensure no Trolling

THE NSW Labor Opposition has called on the Premier to guarantee that no other Coalition campaign teams, staffers or MPs had engaged in Facebook trolling during the recent election campaign. It comes as NSW Labor throws its support behind a call by an outgoing Liberal Parliamentarian to expel anyone who knew about the Port Stephens’ Liberal Facebook trolling. Departing Liberal Upper House member Scot MacDonald said this week that the tactic showed “poor judgement” and that anyone

linked to the trolling scandal during the recent State Election should be “kicked out of the party”. On Monday the Premier said she wanted to improve the conduct of Parliamentarians in the wake of last week’s Election. NSW Interim Opposition Leader, Penny Sharpe, and Labor MP for Port Stephens, Kate Washington, supported Mr MacDonald’s public statements and urged the Premier to be true to her stated commitment. Senior Liberal Upper House member, Catherine Cusack, became embroiled in the controversy in February

after Ms Washington asked Facebook and the Clerk of Parliament to investigate fake Facebook accounts being operated by one of Ms Cusack’s staff members. Ms Sharpe also called on Premier Gladys Berejiklian to guarantee that no other Coalition campaign teams, staffers or MPs had engaged in the behaviour. “Even people from her own side see that there is no room for online trolling and election manipulation from fake Facebook accounts political campaigns,” Ms Sharpe said.

Dear Jasminda,

I’m on a health kick and I don’t really want to buy the kids heaps of Easter eggs this year. Do you have any other suggestions?

PRESENTATION TO MAXIMISE YOUR PROPERTY’S SALES POTENTIAL

“I’M selling my home. Do I need to buy new furniture to make it look more appealing to buyers?” This is an often-asked question and a relevant one! When you sell your property, it’s important to keep in mind that buyers want to imagine themselves living in your home; their furniture; their lifestyle. So it’s not so much about showing a home that is out of a brochure. Although this is lovely if you can afford it, the most important bit is about presenting a property that is clean and tidy. For example; cobwebs removed, surfaces dusted, carpets vacuumed and steam-cleaned; hard floors washed; toys put away. Bathrooms and kitchens should be spotless and surfaces clear. And a vase or two of bright flowers looks wonderful. Same with the laundry. Buyers don’t need to see dirty washing! Outside should reflect the inside with lawns mowed, gardens neat and tidy, rubbish removed and any doggydoo picked up! R and R Property offers an in-house style service as an integral part of our listing process. Our knowledgeable team can advise you on what you need to do to present your home in the best possible light. Hope this helps Denise

Mrs KH, Tea Gardens Dear Mrs KH,

We don’t want excuses Bill Doran former Independent candidate for the seat of Port Stephens says both sides should swallow pride

Dear News Of The Area,

I RAN as an independent for the seat of Port Stephens and just as I predicted lon Sunday, the withdrawal of promises has started. The Berejiklian government is now punishing the seat of Port Stephens for not putting Jaimie (Abbott) in the seat through this backflip on the Fingal bay link road. Kate (Washington) will claim there’s nothing she can do about the money or promise because we didn’t put a Labor government in. To both sides, we don’t want excuses, we want community results and if that means one or both sides need to swallow some pride, then do it! Ms Berejiklian, you made an allowance for that money so why not take that $188 million and use it to compensate those in the PFAS Red zone with a state land buyback for example. That will be one massive Port Stephens problem the best part of solved. Or invest that money in a regular fast ferry service around the entire bay. Thus increasing opportunities for numerous

people around the electorate, both visitors and residents alike. Teddy Roosevelt once said “Complaining without offering alternatives is whining” so here are some alternatives. Now we need our leaders to act like adults, listen to us and collaborate for better community outcomes. Bill Doran (former Independent candidate for the seat of Port Stephens)

THERE are so many Easter options this year because Easter has become just like every other festive occasion on the calendar. It is an excuse to buy things we don’t need simply because they are available. Apart from all the chocolate eggs, here are some of the things I have seen advertised at the local shopping centre and since I’m trying to avoid single-use plastics, it is very hard to come to terms with the range: 1. An artificial grass table runner. What is this for? Is this to cover in tiny eggs instead of using the real grass in the backyard? I’m confused. 2. An egg hunt grabber. This is a sort of plastic tong contraption because for some reason, our kids who have quite effectively picked up eggs with their hands every other year, now need a sort of egg-a-scoop, similar to what we use to pick up dog poo. Why? 3. Egg trees and Egg wreaths because marketers have decided to sabotage useless stuff at Christmas and extend it to Easter. 4. Easter hunting pack – this sounds positively dangerous. Is the NRA involved? How about James Ashby and Pauline Hanson? Avoid this one at all costs. 5. A light-up toadstool – what on earth has a toadstool got to do with Easter? Now I’m not condoning mass chocolate eating, but I reckon it has to be better than buying plastic rubbish. At least your kids will eat the eggs and there will just be a bit of coloured foil to get rid of. You could always try buying them No Added Sugar Carob Eggs. Those things should fit in with your health kick and they taste so foul that your kids definitely won’t eat too many.

q Bill Doran.

Carpe diem, Jasminda.

q Mayor Ryan Palmer with members of the Mambo Wanda Wetlands Reserves and Landcare Committee.

“One of the biggest things that our community can do is to plant appropriate native gardens. As part of this Grant, we’ll be helping neighbouring properties with garden plant choices to reduce the source of encroaching weeds.” Mr Skinner says Council is looking for volunteers to help protect the wetlands. “We want Mambo Wetlands to be around for future generations to enjoy. We already have a dedicated group of volunteers who meet for a monthly working bee — but we’re always looking for more people to help.” For more information or to volunteer at Mambo Wetlands, contact volunteers@portstephens.nsw.gov.au

ONE of Port Stephens’ most significant environmental assets — the Mambo Wetlands — is set to benefit from a $100,000 Grant to rehabilitate and protect the area for future generations. Port Stephens Council successfully applied for the Grant from the NSW Government’s Environmental Trust to restore and rehabilitate the Mambo Wetlands and protect it from invasive species. Jordan Skinner, Natural Resources Team Leader, says the Grant will allow Council to undertake important restoration works. “The Mambo Wetlands are a precious part of the Port Stephens environment. They play a crucial role in maintaining the health of the port — filtering water, providing a nursery for fish and crustaceans, and a vital food source for birds, insects and other native animals. “Unfortunately, the Mambo Wetlands face many threats including encroaching weeds from neighbouring properties. These weeds can compete with native species and damage the health of the wetlands. “This Grant will allow us to regenerate Mambo Wetlands and educate our wider community about its importance and how we can all help to protect this treasured environment.

unique performance saying that you can hear, that there is a recognizable and unique merge of voice and guitar. To catch her, head to Bulahdelah on 12 April.

Freddie Mercury-style showmanship JASON Paris is a musical tsunami like no other. Is it his Freddie Mercurystyle showmanship, working the crowd into a frenzy, or his mellow tones, layering a sexy vibe over the whole audience? Jason is an extraordinary pianist (fiery, yet finessed) whose style would impress Little Richard and Elton John. He possesses an unbelievable fouroctave voice that is both powerful and sensitive. Few performers can carry off everything from Queen to ABBA in the original key, but Jason does exactly that. With his Elton – The Young Years show, Jason has established himself as a performer of excellence, athletic, powerful and emotional. Whether he’s filling auditoriums or pubs, Jason stuns young and not-

so-young audiences alike. When seeing Jason perform, you can be guaranteed

that your audience will be completely satisfied. Jason is playing at Tilligerry RSL on Saturday 6 April.

q Jason Paris.

DIXIE Conlon had her first taste of gold at the Little Athletics State Track and Field Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre on 16 and 17 March. Representing Raymond Terrace Athletics Club, Dixie overcame the extremely wet conditions to make a personal best jump in the U11s triple jump. Dixie added an impressive 39cm to her previous best jump which secured her first place and the gold medal for the event. She also finished 5th in the 60 metre hurdles. Jack Kenny and Keira McGregor also represented the Raymond Terrace Athletics Club. Jack won silver in the U17s Javelin event with a strong 48.63 metre throw. Keira finished her very successful season with a bronze in the 100 metres with a time of 12.88 seconds. Wet weather on the second day of the Championships saw officials taking the unprecedented step of cancelling 15 events. The majority of event cancellations were due to long jump and triple jump sand pits being flooded. Unfortunately two representatives of Raymond Terrace Athletic Club were unable to contest their events due to the

cancellation. Dixie’s gold medal was the finishing touch to her best season. In January 2019 she was thrilled to be selected to the NSW Little Athletics Team for the Trans Tasman Challenge event. The Trans Tasman Challenge is for athletes in the U11 and U12 age groups, from NSW and Auckland. The event was held in Auckland on 13 January, 2019. Dixie gained valuable experience in Auckland and hopes to be selected again for the event in 2020. She also competed at the NSW Country Championships which were held at Hunter Sports Centre in Newcastle on 24 to 27 January, 2019. This was Ms Conlan’s first time competing at the NSW Country Championships. Despite heatwave conditions she claimed gold in the 200 metre event and in long jump as well as a silver for the 100 metres. With the athletics season finished most athletes will be taking a well earned break. Raymond Terrace Athletics Club will hold an Annual Presentation of Club Awards at 4.00pm on 5 May, 2019 at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club.

owner Wendy Ward offered him to Ms Shannon to train and compete. The following years saw the partnership flourish and in 2016 the pair won the Adelaide International CCI 4* event, the most prestigious eventing competition in Australia. The win put them in contention for Olympic selection. After Adelaide, Ms Ward notified Ms Shannon and Heath Ryan of her intention to sell Clifford. With the purchase of the horse being out of reach for Ms Shannon, Terry and

Ginnette Snow came to the rescue allowing Ms Shannon to continue the partnership and follow her Olympic aspirations. Mr Snow, owner of Willinga Park a state-ofthe-art equestrian facility at Bawley Point, is a wellknown philanthropist who gives support to many champion riders. With the partnership secured Ms Shannon and Willinga Park Clifford contested Adelaide International CCI 4* in 2017 finishing in 7th place and again in 2018 where they became the first horse and rider combination to win the event twice.
