Archery Club growing popularity By Marian SAMPSON
PORT Stephens Archers are a 3D Archery Association of Australia affiliated Club. Members shoot 3D archery which is the fastest growing archery sport in the world. Rubber animal targets are set in bushland at unknown distances and the archer then has to estimate distance and make a shot to score the highest points. The beauty of this form of archery is no two targets are ever the same. Steven Richards of Port Stephens Archers told News Of the Area, “You also need to walk around a course through bushland and so get a fair amount of exercise throughout the course of the day.” The Club will also shoot an indoor series of an evening. “This is challenging as well but it’s also a great way to improve form and

7.5% seven-year increase proposal to IPART ignoring the majority of residents feedback on the rate rise. There is concern over the steep rate rise being way ahead of CPI literally changing the lives of residents on fixed incomes, they will be made poorer they will have to give up things in their lives they currently enjoy. Mayor Palmer said, “At the heart of what we’re proposing is our aim to provide more for all areas of Port Stephens – major projects and enhanced community services to benefit all, along with location specific projects for our local communities. “We know that if we remain with our current rates income, we can continue our current services however we won’t be able to take on or maintain a range of new projects. This Council strongly believes that our community deserves more. “We also know affordability is a key issue, and we’re proposing a new Rates Assistance Program to provide financial assistance to those who may be financially vulnerable,” Mayor Palmer said. Councillor Jaimie Abbott said, “I acknowledge the work of the Mayor and Council staff, but the SRV has not
we have to do it for the sake of the children of Port Stephens and their future; too many kids, have to leave the area for employment and it would be nice if some of them could find a future here in Port Stephens,” he said. Councillor Tucker believes that a rate rise is inevitable at some stage. Residents and visitors complain that our roads and community facilities aren’t as good as other places in the Hunter. Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens, also weighed in on the issue stating, “It’s disappointing that Port Stephens Council is continuing to pursue this massive rate hike when the majority of the community is clearly opposed to it. “No-one I’ve spoken with supports it. “Pensioners, single
can’t afford to pay more. “When the cost of living is so high, and there are many families struggling to put food on their table, Council should have listened to the community and scrapped this proposal. “Now we have to take the fight up to IPART – I encourage everyone to make a submission and have their voices heard,” she said. IPART will now review the application made by Council and is expected to hand down its decision by May 2019, with members of the public able to make submissions between February 11 and March 11, 2019 at www.ipart.nsw.gov.au.

Lodge Will Stay Public By Marian SAMPSON and Heather SHARP
MANY residents of Port Stephens have held grave concerns as to the future of the land and historic buildings of Tomaree Lodge at Shoal Bay. With the Election due in March, Tomaree Lodge has become a political battleground, with both major parties declaring an interest in preserving it in public hands. Both sides have ruled out privatising the Lodge, a heritage-listed former military camp and hospital which is currently used as residential disability accommodation at Shoalhaven Road, Shoal Bay. Ray Williams Minister for Disability services pledged that Tomaree Lodge will remain in public hands. This announcement from the Government comes after member for Port Stephens Kate Washington issued a statement. Tomaree Lodge is strongly supported by the local community and will be kept for community use and as open space. The site is not expected
to be vacant until late 2019 or early 2020, with residents still being relocated after delays in finding suitable accommodation. The residents of Tomaree Lodge are predominantly aged over 65 and live with intellectual and physical disabilities, they will be rehoused into group homes accommodating up to six people providing them with a more home like environment. Liberal Candidate Ms Jaimie Abbott told News Of The Area, “I’m pleased to see the Berejiklian Government has committed to seeing the Tomaree Lodge site remain in public hands.” “It’s a place the community has used for many years and is of great significant to this community,” she said. Ms Washington said, “My position is clear, under Labor the Tomaree Lodge site will remain in public hands.” “This is what the community and I have been fighting for, for years.” “It took a commitment from Labor this morning for the Government to finally back the community,” Ms Washington told News Of The Area.
Tomaree Business Chamber, Nelson Bay RSL Sub-Branch, Destination Port Stephens, Port Stephens Historical Society, Shoal Bay Community Association, Tomaree Ratepayers and Residents Association, EcoNetwork Port Stephens and the Marine Parks Association have been lobbying to see the site stay in public hands and have delivered a vision for the future of the site which

includes realising the full potential of this outstanding natural and heritage asset, by maintaining public access and enhanced interpretation of the unique natural, cultural and heritage qualities of the Headland and Port Stephens. election campaign, can be seen as positive for the future of Port Stephens. Tomaree Lodge was designed by the NSW Government Architect’s Office and built from 1942 by the NSW Department of Public Works for the Commonwealth Government. Tim Meharg, Chairman of the Shoal Bay Community Association (SBCA) said, “These pledges are welcome news and end a lot of
uncertainty about the future of the historical and visually spectacular Tomaree Head precinct, once the Lodge is vacated.” “We support the Friends of Tomaree Head, who propose that the Headland be transformed into a nationally significant tourist attraction while maintaining its heritage values, with increased parking and the preparation of a masterplan,” said Mr Meharg.
Council leading the fight against illegal dumping Port Stephens Council is leading the fight against illegal dumping, with an 80% reduction in most hotspots over the past 12 months — but the war isn’t over. This year, Council will be battling illegal dumping with funding from the NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative. Nick Jones, Waste Compliance and Strategy Coordinator, says an Illegal Dumping Clean-Up and Prevention Grant will enable Council to install even more measures to prevent illegal dumping. “This grant funding will allow us to continue our successful war against illegal dumping, focusing on new hotspots along roadsides. “We’ve had a positive result with our current approach with an 80% reduction in most hotspots, which is a great win for the Port Stephens community,” he said. This year, we’ll be targeting illegal dumping of household and garden waste at: • Ferodale • Tomago • Oyster Cove • Twelve Mile Creek “We will be cleaning up waste, installing signs, conducting surveillance and enforcing the law at these locations,” he said. “We’re also asking the community to get involved and report more illegal dumping incidents — sending the clear message that illegal dumping is not ok in Port Stephens. “With the community’s help, we’ve been able to track down more offenders, issue infringement notices of up to $8000, issue clean-up notices and even prosecution in the local court,” he added.
This project is a EPA Waste Less, Recycle More Initiative, funded from the waste levy.

High School Seeing Double! Record number of Twins! By Kelly MAY THE staff of Irrawang High School would be excused for thinking they were seeing double this week as the record number year seven students ventured onto the school grounds for the first time. The Irrawang High enrolments for 2019 are in excess of 900 which is an increase of more than 250 compared to 2017. Year seven in particular has seen a notable increase of around ten percent from last year, among them were a record six sets of twins. When asked about the school’s facility capabilities, Irrawang High School Principal, Mr Paul Baxter said, “We have the facilities to cater for this many students and are continuing to update and create Future Focus learning classrooms.” The sets of twins did
not know each other before starting high school as they each came from different partner primary schools. Identical twins Hayley and Libby Gentle found it strange meeting other identical twins. Hayley told her mother, “One set of twins is very identical, I mean they look exactly the same, I can’t tell them apart.” Her mother Nicole simply replied, “Well now you know how everyone else feels when they see you two.” Fraternal twins Abby and Issac Keeley had a different experience. Not looking at all the same they had trouble convincing people they were in fact twins. Issac told News Of The Area, “It was good having Abby with me: it made it easier to catch the bus and know that there was someone to find at school if

I need to.” Their mother, Elizabeth Keeley said, “From a parent’s perspective it is comforting to know they have each other.” The staff has taken the influx of twins in their stride. Mr Baxter said, “We have a very strong focus on supporting, getting to know and forming relationships with all our students.” “It has been a great week back for year seven and they have enjoyed a variety of subjects in the first two days.”

Trove is an Australian online library data “The most efficient approach to digitise a newspaper for online access is to scan the master copy of microfilm, perform content analysis, apply Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and quality assurance of the text images and text,” Shirley said. So far Stage One, copying the newspapers on to microfilm has been completed. Stage two involves performing content analysis, OCR and quality assurance cost $2.31 per page. To complete the eight reels it’s estimated the cost is close to $20,000. The Family Research Group, recently received a Grant of $5,000 from the Royal Australian Historical Society funded by NSW Government which will be available this month. More donations are always welcome. And the public is invited to a launch of the project on Monday 18 February from 10.30am at the Group’s research centre at 3/209 Myall Street, Tea Gardens.

Rescue Boats earmarked to be Upgraded BOTH Port Stephens and Lemon Tree Passage Marine Rescue flotillas are included in the list of 28 units to receive new boats. This is part of an initiative by the Berejiklian State Government. Over the next four years some 38 new vessels will be added to rescue fleet manned by volunteers along the NSW coast at a cost of $37.6 million. This means an effective doubling of the Marine Rescue budget.
Lemon Tree Passage unit commander Rick Tyler said that the new vessel would improve the effectiveness of the service. “Ours is one of the oldest serving boats in the fleet and we look forward to the upgrade,” he said. “The rapid change in technology means that older craft are left behind and electronic communication systems, radar, night vision equipment and rescue gear need to be brought up to pace,” Mr Tyler said. The roll-out of the new

vessels will probably see the new Lemon Tree craft come on stream in about two years according to Rick.

Community the focus of Disability Support Group By Kelly MAY THE introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has brought about a higher public awareness of disability services in the community. One provider, Endeavour Group Australia (EGA) Nelson Bay has, after months of uncertainty, announced it is here to stay. EGA is looking at offering new and exciting activities to their programs this year to be inclusive within and give back to the community. Ms Kim Harding, the Team Leader at EGA spoke with News Of The Area about the day centre for high needs adults. Ms Harding said, “Our programs will be focused on skill building and reaching goals no matter how big or small, independent living skills ranging from travel training healthy cooking skills, and fitness we set our activities to be fun and engaging but also to build skills while doing so.” Mr Glenn Tarrent from Anytime Fitness will once again lead participants in a weekly gym session where he modifies exercise to suit all abilities. Feedback shows both the staff and participants love this part of the program Mr Adam and Ms Michelle Nicholas who run disability lawn bowls at Raymond Terrace Bowling Club will also be back and teaching the team new skills in lawn bowls. Mr Nicholas provides assistive ramps so everyone can join in and within the last 12 months the team has improved and picked some very valuable skills. Ms Harding said, “We will once again be running our monthly Bingo which is the second Thursday of every month at Soldiers Point Bowling Club.” “This is a fun and interactive day for anyone with special needs to come and join in; we have gift vouchers for prizes that are donated by Soldiers Point Bowling Club and the Bistro also caters a great valued $5 lunch.” “The Bingo is run by our participants and the money raised has enabled us to purchase items such as a BBQ, picnic chairs, a karaoke machine, and has paid for our Christmas parties for the past two years.” “We have many new ideas to come this year: so keep a look out for us throughout the year, our doors are always open so feel free to drop in meet the team.” EGA is looking at beginning a music therapy group or Zumba classes but at the moment are unable to find someone who can come and start this up for a reasonable price. If you are interested or know some who is, please contact Kim Harding on 0488 007 212.

Long Lunches and Australia Day Fun
By Marian SAMPSON PORT Stephens local Seniors are on the move and none more so than the members of the Probus Club of Port Stephens who certainly haven’t been letting the grass grow under their feet. The Group has already clocked up two events in January 2019. The fishing group and friends decided not to fish until February and organizer David Long held a bring-aplate “Long’s Lunch” to get the year started.
Australia Day was again celebrated at Sunset Beach by the Probus Club, with a late afternoon family picnic when most members dressed up accordingly for this fun activity. Ann Gibson Publicity Officer for the Port Stephens Probus Club told News Of The Area, “Lots of friendship was evident as is the usual case in this very active Probus Club.” February will bring all the usual activities back into line with lots of other events already being planned for

Help – My house is For Sale, but nobody has come through it yet? What do I do? DC Medowie FIRSTLY, I suggest you check in with your real estate agent & ask if people are making any enquiry on your home? If so what type of questions or feedback is there? Has the agent suggested your property to buyers they’ve spoken with? If so, & the buyers say they’re not interested in your property & don’t want to view, then ask why. If you’re aware of a recurring negative comment, you may be able to repair or adjust the issue. Do you have stylish & sparse furniture/ furnishings? Was the house tidy when the photography was done? This will impact your photographs immensely & could either attract or turn off potential buyers. Where is your agent advertising your property? You need to be listed on the most popular search sites. How does your property look online & in print advertising? Has the agent had professional photography completed for you? If the presentation & marketing are perfect, then the next question needs to be - are you priced correctly for; your home, the current real estate climate & your location? Do you know what similar properties have sold for in your immediate & surrounding area? Hope this helps Denise

Neighbourhood Watch groups keeping an eye
By Kelly MAY
THERE has been a notable rise in incidents requiring Police action in the area, according to local Neighbourhood Watch Groups. One such incident that received excessive social media coverage recently, was the theft and burning of four cars in Medowie. This same incident was discussed at length during the Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) meeting on Wednesday 30 January. During the meeting Secretary of Medowie NHW, Ms Libby Dingle said, “I have spoken with the local Police Liaison Officer and it is important to note that only one of the four stolen cars in this incident was from Medowie.” “The offenders are not believed to be from the Port Stephens region.” The four cars were used in a string of offences before one ran out of fuel and the other three were abandoned and burnt out. One left in a front yard on Heritage avenue and the other two on the side of James road. Contents recovered from the boot of one vehicle was from various locations not just the registered address.
NHW Medowie urge residents to stay vigilant with their personal and property security. They have security cameras available for two month loans, should anyone feel the need to set up a system, or wish to try them before installing their own. Anyone wishing to borrow a camera should contact NHW via their email address medowie. nhw@gmail.com. Later this year NHW Medowie will host a Security Awareness Expo. The event will include experts in home and vehicle security. As well as the opportunity to have your number plates fitted with one way screws to prevent them being stolen. A stolen number plate is not just an inconvenience. Your number plates can be fitted to a stolen car and that car used in a range of crimes, such as the theft of petrol. Further information on this event will be discussed at the next bi-monthly NHW meeting on Wednesday 27 March at the Medowie Community Hall. All members of the local community are invited and encouraged to attend.
Unhappy about Rate Rise OPINION Dear News Of The Area, DESPITE survey percentages of up to 74% being against Council’s sought SRV, Mr Palmer, the Mayor, believes ‘the community has unequivocally told us that they want more than we can provide with our current income’, while Mr Le Mottee speaks of a clear mandate from ratepayers. Port Stephens deserves trustworthy councillors who will follow the regulations in the NSW Local Government Act, such as: 8A (2)(c) Councils should consider the long term and cumulative effects of actions on future generations. 8A (2)(e) Council decisionmaking should be transparent and decision-makers are to be accountable for decisions and omissions. 226 Role of mayor (f) to ensure the meetings of the council are conducted efficiently, effectively and in accordance with this Act. 232 (d) to represent the collective interests of residents, ratepayers and the local
community. Further relevant and eyeopening reading material will be found in IPART’s ‘Revenue Framework for Local Government’. I leave it to Mr Ken Fletcher (Examiner 25/10/18), Mr Peter Slater (Examiner 18/10/18), E Boyce (Examiner 03/01/19) and/or other interested individuals to pursue information relating to breaches of the Act etc. Anyone against this SRV sought by Port Stephens Council must lodge a submission (signed by you/ your family/your neighbours) with IPART from 11 February to 11 March. Public submissions should be made BY POST to PO Box K35, Haymarket, NSW, 1240, or ONLINE www. ipart.nsw.gov.au If sufficient people lodge submissions there may be no need for a Yellow Vest movement in Port Stephens. That time of the week again
Concerned Mr KM, Fishermans Bay FOR those readers who have not already been bitten by the Marie Kondo craze - actually I don’t think Marie Kondo would bite - she would take neat nibbles and wipe her mouth delicately with a napkin requiring advanced-level origami skills to replicate its precise Marie Kondo folds - Marie Kondo is a celebrity tidier. Yes, you did read that correctly. You can be a celebrity for just about anything these days: for having your buttocks injected, for being a weirdo on YouTube, for marrying a stranger (this is more suited to C-grade celebs), for writing non-erotic erotic fiction (50 Shades of Bad Writing), for being a brat and making a reality TV show (suited to adults and children), for making up new moves (dabbing, whipping, nae nae-ing and now flossing - something dentists should take advantage of in their marketing strategies) and so on. You get my drift. Anyway, Marie Kondo, one of the tidiest-looking humans I’ve ever seen, teaches us how to make do with less by keeping what brings us joy. Of course everyone’s idea of joy is quite unique. Some people find joy in having forty-seven pairs of boots, others by keeping every drawing their child has done since pre-school. Some people find joy in collecting teapots. Others in collecting nutjobs (or so the divorce statistics would indicate). So, I think it is a very personal thing. The other issue with the Marie Kondo craze, is that it’s pretty much a waste of time unless everyone in the family gets involved. There’s no point spending hours folding your kids’ t-shirts into perfect folds, when they still toss 15 items of clothing onto the floor to find what they’re looking for. Basically, if we’re all going to go Kondo (and being a minimalist, I take no issue with the idea), there may be an opening for Kondo Bootcamps where everyone arrives with a boot-load of junk and then returns home with just one tiny box of joy. Or, here’s an idea: How about we just stop buying useless crap in the first place? Then all your joyless discards won’t end up in landfill. Again, the problem with this comes back to the idea of fads and fads are what keeps our capitalist society going, as evidenced by people trying to re-sell their 57 Beanie Boos, or 200 Furbies, or their 20 Tamagotchis or 39 slap bracelets, or 15 fidget spinners or their Tickle Me Elmo . . . actually I reckon Tickle Me Elmo would bring Marie Kondo a lot of joy. I bet she would smile, and perhaps even emit an enigmatic, yet controlled laugh with one hand covering her immaculatelypenciled lips. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

FOR Elton John Saturday night’s alright. The same can be said for the members and guests of the Tilligerry RSL Club, rocking out to the party tunes of solo guitar and vocalist, Bernie. Bernie began playing guitar at the early age of nine years old. Following six years of lessons in Sydney he moved to the Central West and continued his journey under the capable mentorship of Leo Dekroo for the following seven years. Leo and his brother Doug, better known as The Dekroo Brothers, are famous for a hit single in the 1960’s titled ‘And Her Name Is Scarlet’. After gaining experience with various artists and Bands Bernie decided to go it alone taking vocal lessons and moving to Newcastle. Professionalism is a key ingredient to Bernie’s solo shows with crowd engagement and providing an exceptional sound highest on his priority list. Bernie will rock out the Tilligerry RSL from 7:30pm on Saturday 9 February, with unmistakable covers from artists such as Hunters and Collectors, Dire Straits, Greenday, The Eagles, and Chris Issac. The Tides Bistro kitchen opens for dinner at 5:30pm. Why not give yourself the night off, have an easy dinner and let someone else do the cleaning.

WHILE most of us have been trying to keep cool over the past couple of weeks, young athlete Keira McGregor was burning up the track at the New South Wales Country Athletics Championships at Glendale near Newcastle. And again the 12 year old came home with a chest full of medals. Dad, John McGregor said, “Her 100 metre is her most important event and the hardest to win with great competitors from all over the State, but Keira ran a terrific race to win the Gold.” A second day of competition saw Keira compete in the long jump and 200 metres getting a second in both. “Heat was the major problem with 44 degrees and after the long jump the competition was called off for an hour to see if the temperature dropped which it didn’t,” John said. Day Three and another second for Keira in the triple jump. “The jumps are becoming specialised events and you need not just speed but new techniques as well,” John said.

Get Your 2019 Free Market appraisal Now Thinking Of Selling?
CuriOuS AbOuT The MArkeT?
When it comes to selling property there is no secret that there are better times on market than others. For example; spring we all know, will see a flourish of property hitting the market which brings a competitive wave through the area for quality properties. Winter is when the market slows down a little, there is not as much to choose from, therefore a seller can receive a pretty penny due to demand. Christmas time is a busy time of year, buyers are holidaying, renovating, relaxing or spending time with their families which in turn leaves a quieter time over Mid December to the second week in January. This brings us to noW. Whether you’re thinking of selling, or seeking an appraisal for future financial goals, mid-January to mid-May is the perfect time. right now, buyers have settled back into their routines and can seriously commit to buying property. Conveyancers are back on deck, loan departments fully staffed, and those buyers who put off their search heading into Christmas are now picking it right back up.
Don’t wait and miss out on the rush of buyers trying to secure property by the end of the January holidays to the end of February, be a step ahead of other sellers and be the first on market in 2019 when competition for property is HOT.
