Opening the event, Port Stephens Council’s Community Futures Directorate, Steve Peart, said the discussions would inform the new Port Stephens Housing Strategy, a document “which provides a framework for future housing growth across our towns and suburbs”.

“What we are seeing is house prices rising, rental shortages, and clearly businesses are struggling, particularly in our main tourism areas, to attract a suitable workforce,” Mr Peart said.

“We have predictions around the future of housing across Port Stephens.

“We need 20,000 new beds in 20 years, which equates to about 11,000 new homes in Port Stephens.”

Mr Peart said Council were seeking solutions to “encourage more townhouses and apartments around our town centres” and “encourage developers to invest in a mix of housing types”.

Guest-speaking at the event were GYDE Consulting directors Anna Chubb and Chris O’Dell.

Mr O’Dell’s address highlighted statistics which paint a stark picture of the region’s issues with housing supply, demand and affordability.

“From 2018 to now we have seen the median price of a house in Port Stephens go up by about 45 percent, it is now

sitting at about $820,000,” Mr O’Dell said.

The median price of a unit in Nelson Bay is $756,000, up 76 percent from 2018.

“We have seen an enormous increase in the apartment market,” he said.

Council’s last housing strategy was released in 2020, however, as Mr O’Dell stated, a lot has happened since then – including a global pandemic.

“We have seen in the Hunter region this economic growth across the board,” he said.

The Hunter Regional Plan 2041 was also released in 2020, which predicts the Hunter’s population of 860,000 people to increase to nearly 950,000 by 2041 – requiring an additional 101,800 dwellings across the region to meet demand.

In Port Stephens this means an additional 11,100 dwellings.

“The Hunter Regional Plan focuses on the urbanisation of the key centres in the region,” Mr O’Dell said.

Outlined in the plan, the NSW Government has set a target of 80 percent of new dwellings to be built in existing urban areas.

Infill development currently accounts for about 20 percent of development in Port Stephens.

Mr O’Dell also highlighted the influx of migration into the area from the rest of the state, with Port Stephens the eighth highest regional NSW LGA in terms of population increase between 2021-22 and 2022-

23.

It is a trend mirrored across the Hunter, with Maitland, Cessnock, Singleton and Dungog all in the top ten.

“Everywhere Port Stephens basically borders is also growing at a rate much faster than the rest of the state.

“The bulk of people coming into Port Stephens are from other parts of the state,” Mr O’Dell said.

Maitland, Lake Macquarie, MidCoast and Central Coast were the LGAs from which the highest numbers of internal migrants arrived during that time.

One in five people moving into the LGA from 2021-22 were the result of overseas migration.

With demand growing, and supply low, land values have responded across Port Stephens, with median land values for residential land rising by as much as 104 percent in some parts of the LGA between July 2020 and July 2022.

According to Valuer General data, median residential land values in Seaham and Wallalong rose by 104 percent, with a 97 percent change in Fingal Bay and 94 percent in Mallabula.

At the other end of the scale, the suburb with the least growth in median residential land values was Swan Bay, at 51 percent.

Residential vacancy rates have also dramatically reduced in the past two years.

At census time in 2021,

Port Stephens had a vacancy rate of three percent, down to 1.07 percent in September 2023.

Mr O’Dell said that on 1 November, around 100 properties were available for rent in the Port Stephens LGA. Rental prices have responded to this demand, with the weekly median rent rising from $432 in September 2020 to $561 in September 2023, a 30 percent increase.

“In the space of three years, rents have gone up by about a third.”

Mr O’Dell also touched on the type of housing stock available to potential renters.

“Four out of five homes are detached.

“65 percent of your housing stock is a detached house with three or four bedrooms.

“Townhouses make up seven percent.

“There is a very limited number of apartments and flats, five percent of your housing stock.

“You have more five bedroom houses than your entire apartment stock.”

Ms Chubb then addressed the audience, highlighting opportunities to create more effective urban areas through planning principles such as the ’15-minute neighbourhood’, a concept promoted in the Hunter Regional Plan 2041 but mired by baseless conspiracy theories in recent times.

“I know there are some conspiracy theorists who think that 15-minute neighbourhoods are about

PORT STEPHENS News Of The Area making sure no one ever leaves their suburbs, but it is really about building communities that are liveable, affordable and sustainable.

“This concept is a really important part of our thinking.”

Ms Chubb also spoke of the extensive benefits of infill developments, citing advantages in terms of affordability, sustainability and the environment.

“In Port Stephens, we know how important the environment is,” she said.

“There will be continuing challenges to look at greenfield sites.

“There are actually ways to increase the number of homes in existing urban areas without even doing that much.

“The rest of the world has discovered the wonders of ‘Fonzie Flats’ or granny flats.

“NSW has had the ability to do that in a really seamless way for a number of years now.

“That is the way you can actually increase housing diversity and supply without even noticing it.”

With providing social and affordable housing an issue in NSW for many years, Ms Chubb described the Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) set up this year by the Federal Government as a “game-changer”.

Over a five-year period, disbursements from the HAFF will be used to support the delivery and availability of 30,000 social and affordable homes around the country.

“It will provide a sustainable and streamlined subsidy for $500 million a year for the next five years.”

Following the guest speakers and a Q and A period, forum attendees engaged in three small-group sessions.

The first focused on housing supply, posing the question: Why should we strive to meet the housing needs of our community?.

Session two explored the opportunities and challenges of greenfield and infill housing.

Session three considered housing diversity, examining how this concept would look in Port Stephens in terms of housing type, density, character and more.

During these sessions, stakeholders agreed upon the need to find a balance between housing affordability and a return on investment for developers.

Attendees also discussed opportunities to develop partnerships to redevelop social housing and government owned land.

Ways to reduce negative perceptions around housing density were also considered, as was the need to define suitable sites for infill housing.

A review of Council’s planning policies was also suggested.

In terms of social housing, meeting attendees agreed providers should be encouraged to redevelop old housing stock.

Social housing or affordable housing targets for developers will also be considered.

Marketing programs aimed at changing the perception of areas not viewed as favourable locations to live or invest were also discussed.

Public hearing discusses future of PFAS-impacted land FROM Page 1 last week.

The review is focused on communities around RAAF Base Williamtown, Swartz Barracks in Queensland and RAAF Base Tindal in the Northern Territory.

Impacted landowners from the broader Williamtown PFAS Management Area gathered in numbers at the Murrook Cultural Centre in Williamtown last Thursday to hear more about the review and share their thoughts on future land usage in the area.

In September 2015, the NSW Government announced that PFAS had been detected both on and offsite at RAAF Base Williamtown.

PFAS compounds were active ingredients found in firefighting foams used extensively by Defence at the base from the 1950s.

Defence began phasing out the use of the foam in 2004.

Since the discovery of the contamination in 2015, impacted landowners have been fighting for fair compensation and a way forward.

Some wish to have their land purchased by the government, while others wish to remain.

The new review will explore options for land

usage, including repurposing land adjacent to Defence facilities for industrial use, particularly for the defence industry. Attendees at last week’s public hearing expressed frustration that after eight years of similar meetings, no effective plan for the future of impacted areas had been agreed upon.

Buy backs of land were discussed, with the need for fair prices reflecting the strong real estate market being stressed by multiple community members.

Attendees who do not wish to be bought out from their properties expressed the need for adequate compensation to be offered to landowners, highlighting that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to future land usage would be ineffective.

The use of impacted land for the installation of renewable energy infrastructure was also discussed.

In attendance was Joanne Rigby, a landowner within the broader PFAS management area.

“I think the meeting went really well,” she said.

“It was interesting to hear everyone’s perspectives and what they wanted to get out of this review.

“I am intrigued to see how the review will come up with a nuanced approach to

meet the differing opinions and needs of the area.”

Ms Rigby stressed the need for the review to be “considerate of surrounding areas”.

“Whatever happens in the primary zone needs to be done in the understanding that the airport is there, we have got residential areas and rural-residential land - it needs to be sympathetic and integrated.”

Brian Byers, a landowner in the primary management zone, welcomed the review.

“I was pleased to hear everyone’s views on things and how it is affecting them.

“It was good to see that we haven’t just been paid out.

“Another department is going to fight for us and try to do something for us.”

Mr Byers said the former Federal Government “didn’t want to know” landowners impacted by PFAS contamination.

“I feel like this private reviewer may be able to put pressure on the government.

“We have had meeting after meeting and we have got nowhere.”

Mr Byers hopes to be bought out from his property.

“I don’t want to be here in this contaminated land,” he said.

“Since I moved here in 1980, I had been growing

and eating vegetables here all that time until they told us.

“I don’t do it anymore, but back then I didn’t know about the contamination.

“Everybody else here was the same, small farmers or landholders, who wanted to live on the land because they liked the freedom of it.”

The Federal Government has appointed Mr Jim Varghese AM to lead the review.

Mr Varghese has extensive experience in conducting independent reviews at the federal and

state level.

He is chair and owner of The Leadership Company Qld Pty Ltd, Chancellor of Torrens University, Chair of City of Springfield Board of Directors, and a director of several private and not-forprofit companies.

“The purpose of today was to make an authentic attempt to listen to what the community's concerns are,” Mr Varghese said.

“At the beginning of the meeting there was a very high level of cynicism at yet another review happening.

“At the end of the meeting there was significantly more optimism that some of the issues that had been raised had been genuinely listened to.”

The review team is still calling for community input, with the submissions period closing at 9pm on Sunday 3 December 2023.

fell during the “war to end all wars”, but in all military conflicts since.

“About 416,000 men enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) out of a population of about five million at the end of 1918,” according to the Australian Department of Veteran Affairs.

“Of those enlistments, more than 330,000 men served overseas.”

A further 2139 women served in the Australian Army Nursing Services (AANS) during WWI. According to the Australian War Memorial, more than 60,000 of those who served were killed and 156,000 taken prisoner, wounded or gassed.

Australian service men and women have continued to serve in many locations, some under fire and some performing vital humanitarian work.

Sadly not all return home.

Each year on November 11 communities come together to pay tribute to those that paid the ultimate price.

This year communities gathered at Nelson Bay, Raymond Terrace and Medowie to pay their respects.

Port Stephens Deputy Mayor Leah Anderson attended the Nelson Bay ceremony and laid a wreath

as a tribute to those who have served.

“Remembrance Day was a special day with many people attending to pay their respects and remember those who served our country, and those who continue to serve our country,” Cr Anderson said.

“Lest we forget.”

NSW Premier Chris Minns said Remembrance Day was a chance to reflect on those “who bravely laid down their own lives to preserve our way of life and defend our country”.

“We acknowledge those who currently serve in our defence, at home and abroad,”

Mr Minns said.

“There is no example of a higher public service than offering your own life to protect your country.

“Our nation also owes recognition to those who have lost a parent, child or family member in the defence of our country.

“They profoundly know the value of commemoration of our fallen and recognising those who returned.

“Australia’s free and democratic society is built upon the shoulders of these brave men and women for which we commemorate today.”

three weeks exceeding the initial 100,000m3 target, delivering an additional 30,000 cubic metres of sand.

“The people of Stockton have fought a long, hard battle to get this sand back on their beach,” said Yasmin Catley, Minister for the Hunter.

“Getting 130,000 cubic metres of sand onto Stockton is an incredible result for Stockton and the wider Hunter community, and while there is still more work to be done, we are on our way and moving in the right direction.”

During the works, it became evident that more sand had accumulated in the approved dredging area in Newcastle Harbour.

The Trud R, the dredging vessel that collected and sprayed the sand onto Stockton Beach, was able to dredge this additional sand.

Investigations into sourcing further sand for Stockton Beach continue.

The NSW Government has steered this project while gathering key insights for a blueprint to help the Department of Planning and Environment map out the next steps for Stockton.

The Blueprint for Stockton, led by the Department of Planning and Environment, will be presented at the next Taskforce meeting in December as the NSW Government works to deliver on its $21 million promise to find long term solutions for coastal erosion at Stockton.

Coastal Design Guidelines released THE NSW Government has released new NSW Coastal Design Guidelines to protect and enhance the state’s waterways, coast and estuaries along our world-famous coastline.

Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) Acting Executive Director State Policy and Strategic, Advice Danijela Karac, said NSW’s coastal environment is an amazing natural resource, and we need to protect it.

“The guidelines provide expert advice for councils, developers and other stakeholders to make sure the NSW coast remains a spectacular natural resource and place of cultural significance for generations to

come,” Ms Karac said.

“The updates will help to improve strategic decisionmaking and environmental outcomes in our coastal places, which impacts most of our population and visitor economy in NSW. “They will help better inform important decisions by councils, developers and anyone involved in designing coastal places.

“They also feature greater consideration of designing with respect for land and sea

Country, Aboriginal heritage, and place-based design that responds to local character.”

The guidelines include a new coastal management framework, and provide up-to-date support for best practice coastal planning, including place-based urban planning, planning for natural hazards, and designing for land and sea country.

Informed by community and stakeholder feedback, the guidelines can help with decisions on:

Requests for changes to planning rules in coastal communities; • Appropriate design for urban areas in coastal places; and, • Managing growing coastal communities.

Ecology centre plan proposed for Tomaree Lodge AN insect ecologist has put forward a proposal to include an ecology centre on the Tomaree Lodge site following its transition into public hands for community use.

Dr Reginald Roberts believes the Tomaree Headland is in a “worldclass location for an ecology centre”, offering ecological, educational, heritage and tourism advantages.

“This region is unique because of its many beautiful

ecological habitats and other attributes which are close to population centres and a major airport, giving it immense potential to attract many more national and international visitors, students, and researchers to our unique and diverse region,” Dr Roberts said.

“The educational opportunities for tens of thousands are immense.

“This region is unique in all of Australia for its tremendous variety of habitats that are within easy reach.

“There is an extremely

rich variety of aquatic and terrestrial life in different habitat, from the ocean and seashore to river estuaries, to the innumerable habitats of Port Stephens, Lake Macquarie, and the Hunter, to the Barrington Tops with its mix of sub-tropical and temperate rainforests.”

Dr Roberts said an ecology centre could provide immense opportunities for students, researchers and eco-tourism, providing an important boost to the region’s scientific capacity.

“Students at all levels would have a firsthand

experience learning, for instance, how the ecology and variety of insects and birds change from the seashore to the hinterland, from the coastal to the tableland, from temperate to the subtropical, from managed to unmanaged.”

The former CSIRO scientist and researcher said an ecology centre could become a key regional centre for learning, enriching interest and education for everyone - “whether visitor, student, senior academic or researcher”.

Dr Roberts is an insect

ecologist with a special interest in modelling the flow of time in natural systems.

In 1986 he retired from the CSIRO as a Principal Research Scientist but has not retired from his absorbing scientific interests.

He is very familiar with the Hunter region, having been raised in Lake Macquarie.

With the exact future use of the Tomaree Lodge site still yet to be determined, Dr Roberts approached the Tomaree Heritage Headland Group with his ecology centre concept.

At 8:30am, churchgoers noticed that their key religious items, the tabernacle and the crucifix, were both removed from their formal resting

places within Our Lady of the Rosary Church on Tarean Road, and they now fear for the fate of their sacred pieces.

“We discovered the crucifix had been discarded between two sheds on the grounds, but the figure of Christ upon it, which was made of plaster, had been smashed from the waist down,” Julie-Gay Smith, Team Leader for Karuah within the Myall Coast Catholic Parish, told NOTA. “The tabernacle, however,

is still missing, it is a heavy metal container and holds the eucharist, so I am not sure what anybody else would want to do with it.

“We are all very upset that this could happen.

“If somebody recognises it, or knows anything about its whereabouts, we just pray that they contact the Police and help to get it returned.”

Climate scientists raise alarm over ocean warming A NEW report by the Climate Council on ocean warming has been released, warning that Australian ocean’s are in crisis as “extreme heat punishes marine life and raises the spectre of irreversible changes with profound consequences for all life on our planet”.

The Climate Council’s Code Blue: Oceans in Crisis report reveals the immense amount of climate-change induced heat currently being absorbed by the world’s oceans is equivalent to boiling the Sydney Harbour every eight minutes.

Key findings include that the rate of ocean warming has more than doubled since the mid 1990s and that global sea levels have risen 20cm since the start of the 20th century, with the rate of rise accelerating.

In addition, the Climate Council ran a highly targeted survey of 30 leading ocean scientists across five continents.

All (100 percent) were ‘extremely’ or ‘very’ concerned about climate-driven changes to the world’s oceans.

Half (53 percent) said these changes were outpacing scientific predictions.

Overwhelmingly, these scientists agreed ‘rapidly phasing out fossil fuels’ is the single most important action governments could take to address ocean warming.

Report author and the Climate Council’s Research Director Dr Simon Bradshaw said, “The science can’t be any clearer: our oceans are in deep trouble.

“Today the ocean is absorbing excess heat energy that’s equivalent to five Hiroshima bomb explosions every second, or enough to boil Sydney Harbour every eight minutes.

“As our climate changes, driven by rampant burning of coal, oil and gas, our seas are transforming before our eyes.

“More frequent and severe marine heatwaves are pushing coral reefs to the brink, ice sheets are melting at an alarming rate, ocean currents are slowing and seas are rising.

“The climate crisis is also an ocean crisis.

“In hospital emergency rooms, a code blue is called when a very serious life-threatening event is underway.

“We are calling a code blue for our oceans today, because this threatens all the species that inhabit them, the people who depend on them, as well as all life on land.

“Over the past few decades as the climate has warmed, the oceans have done an incredible job of protecting us by absorbing CO2 and an immense amount of heat, but there’s a limit to what they can take and we are close to crossing dangerous tipping points.

“We must scale up the use of clean energy like solar and wind, backed by storage, as quickly as we can so the use of coal, oil and gas is phased out.

“Every step that cuts pollution will help secure our future.”

Ocean scientist Professor Gretta Pecl, Director for the Centre for Marine Socioecology at the University of Tasmania, author of the Australian ocean section of the latest IPCC report and report coauthor added, “Make no mistake, ocean scientists around the world are growing increasingly concerned about rapid and

intensifying changes to our oceans.

“While much of the worry for the brutal summer ahead is quite rightly about the impact on our iconic Great Barrier Reef, the scientific community is also extremely concerned about the Great Southern Reef.

“With forecasts of unprecedented and 'off the charts' marine heat this summer, these critical marine ecosystems face risk of utter devastation.

“We’re observing the transformation of the oceans in real time, as marine species move to survive. In Australia, at least 200 marine species have shifted since 2003, with the vast majority headed south.

“As waters warm further south, many will have nowhere left to go.

“While climate change has already caused extensive change to our oceans - and we’ll continue to see devastating impacts for decades - stronger action by governments to reign in fossil fuels right now can limit future harms and ensure more species and ecosystems are given a fighting chance.

“Scientists agree: the single most important action we can take now is to leave fossil fuels in the polluting past - and it has to happen this decade."

The Code Blue report

also raises concerns for the future of surfing, claiming sea level rise and changing wind and swell patterns threaten to undermine treasured surf spots around the country, disrupting one of Australia’s most iconic pastimes.

Pro-surfer Adrian ‘Ace’ Buchan, Surfing Australia Deputy Chairman, has joined the Climate Council’s call to declare a Code Blue emergency, adding, “Surfers have a deep and spiritual connection to the ocean and we are deeply concerned about the devastating impact the climate crisis is having on our big blue playground.

“Erosion is threatening our most iconic surfing spots.

“Our water is being polluted from flood runoff and dangerous jellyfish moving south. Loss of coral reefs and impacts on sandbars, is not just altering where and how waves break, but is also having devastating impacts on marine life.

"This is all terrible news for the millions of ocean loving Aussies - every one of whom should be concerned and take note.

“This is a call to action: we must work to draw attention to the ocean’s plight and push for decisive and rapid climate action now.”

Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary wins at NSW Tourism Awards THE Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary has won gold in the prestigious 'Tourism Attraction' category of the NSW Tourism Awards.

Port Stephens Holiday Parks Section Manager Kim Latham attended the ceremony and accepted the award on behalf of the Koala Sanctuary, Port Stephens Council, and the very special koala population that call Port Stephens home.

“On behalf of all koalas, and especially ours in Port Stephens, we graciously accept this award that will continue to highlight the plight facing all koalas in Australia today,” said Ms Latham.

“Winning this prestigious award will further spotlight the tireless conservation and preservation work that is undertaken everyday by our passionate and loyal Sanctuary staff,” she continued.

The Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary now goes on to represent NSW in the 'Tourism Attraction' category at the Australian Tourism Awards in early 2024.

100 years of Legacy commemorated

BEFORE those gathered at Saturday’s Nelson Bay Remembrance Day service, Port Stephens Legacy members unveiled a commemorative plaque celebrating 100 years of the organisation.

For the past century Legacy has supported the widows and children of Australia’s servicemen and women.

Legacy was formed in 1923 by a group of retired exservicemen from World War 1.

“They believed there was a need to look after the widows and children of servicemen who lost their lives on duty for their country and for the last 100 years thousands of dependents have been supported across Australia,” Legatee Doug Jacka told News Of The Area.

The plaque unveiling took place just before the Remembrance Day Service at Nelson Bay’s Apex Park.

“Our Chair Carol Selkirk,

ex-Vietnam veteran Brian Armstrong and Legatees were proud to be in attendance,” he said.

Legacy provides essential social, financial and developmental support that families depend upon each day, and works every day with veterans’ families experiencing grief, loss and hardship.

Legacy provides support to the partners and children of those fallen or injured in service to their country and are facing social and financial distress.

THE Australian Navy (RAN) service of Medowie Probus Club member Keith Bailey was the topic of a recent meeting of the club, with a presentation by fellow member Ann Tomlinson.

The presentation centred on when Keith was a Lieutenant Commander in the RAN and was asked to be the Guard Commander when Queen Elizabeth II came to Australia in 1992.

Ann spoke about Keith’s service in the RAN and the preparation needed for the greeting of Her Majesty as part of the Tri-Service Guard.

“A collection of slides were shown during the presentation with Keith accompanying HRH Queen Elizabeth II as she inspected the troops on her arrival, and at the subsequent ceremony three days later when she opened the fiftieth

well-respected status and network to promote the important work of Legacy as an ambassador throughout his life.

The presentation also included some humorous anecdotes from the occasion.

The aim of Probus is to provide a meeting place for retirees and semi-retirees in an atmosphere of ‘Fellowship, Fun and Friendship’.

The Combined Probus Club of Medowie provides for both genders and meets on the third Wednesday of the month at the Medowie Community Centre on Ferodale Road, Medowie.

Tomaree students bring Shakespeare to life TOMAREE High School students have been shortlisted for the Bell Shakespeare Shorts Festival with a short film titled 'The Bard Baffles the Bay'.

The festival is a nationwide competition to retell iconic Shakespeare stories.

42 submissions from around Australia were made to the festival, with the winner to be announced in late November.

Bell Shakespeare is Australia’s national theatre company specialising in the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

“Shakespeare's writing challenges us to reach beyond our grasp and gives us the wherewithal to imagine our future.

“If we can learn anything from Shakespeare and the great storytellers of the past, it is that we hold within ourselves the power to make choices about who we want to be.

“We believe our greatest resource is our capacity to imagine and to transform: to picture a different world, to know that it can be one of our own making,” said a Bell Shakespeare spokesperson.

English teachers Sarah Barnard and Anh Ly have experience working for Bell Shakespeare and have shined a light on the iconic English playwright, poet and actor for the Tomaree students.

To be shortlisted for the festival awards is a major achievement for the local high school.

“One out of only two public schools on the list,

Tomaree High is up against some of the nation’s most prestigious schools,” said Sarah.

Under their teachers’ guidance, the students from year 7 and 10 have been given the opportunity to get their foot in the door of the filmmaking world and have truly made the most of the chance.

“We sat down with the kids to brainstorm, and we came up with the concept: What if Shakespeare characters came to present day Port Stephens as their past time character?” said Sarah.

What if Juliet came to Nelson Bay in search of Romeo?

What if Lady Macbeth walked into Salamander Bay shops with blood on her hands trying to find some hand sanitiser?

The students got the opportunity to learn the whole filmmaking process, including concepts, editing and the final cut.

Each of the students helped to come up with the concept and an interesting way to script it.

Like traditional Shakespeare plays, the film was created in five parts.

With all production taking place in Port Stephens, the film even featured a local police officer who happened to be patrolling the street while filming was taking place.

Students in the year 7 group were given inspiration by a book they were reading for class called The King of Shadows, written by awardwinning author Susan Cooper, who brings the wonderful world of Shakespeare back to life in London.

Community Arts Centre gears up for Christmas

THE members of the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre (PSCAC) firmly believe that art is about sharing joy.

The centre's current exhibitions, on display until 12 December, are themed around travel and Christmas crafts.

“We all have the travel bug,” Meryl Miller of PSCAC told News Of The Area.

“This exhibition is an immersive and captivating art exhibition that explores the theme of travel through a diverse range of artistic expressions.

“The variety of art works makes this an exciting exhibition to visit.”

The community is encouraged to visit the Christmas crafts on display, celebrating the spirit of the season through a wide array of handcrafted creations.

“The gallery is filled with inexpensive gifts, making it the ideal place to start your Christmas shopping.

PSCAC is trying something different to provide their many artists with more exposure, resulting in the sharing of a featured artist and potter for each exhibition.

This month Gill Ward and Heidi Harber are sharing the Featured Potter display with Jo Barwick and Jan Bevan sharing the Featured Artists spot.

Jo Barwick grew up in Tasmania in what today would be deemed a large family of six siblings.

Jo moved to the mainland when she married John.

They settled in Canberra until they made the move to beautiful Nelson Bay as their retirement destination.

Jo and John bought a caravan and travelled about six months per year for a time, visiting beautiful destinations such as Port Douglas, Airlie Beach, and anywhere else along the east coast with excellent fishing spots, great walking spots and quality eateries.

Some of the superb scenery along the way has inspired Jo when painting landscapes.

Jo joined PSCAC and found absolute joy in embarking on her journey with painting, enjoying trying different

mediums, techniques and new and varied subjects.

Jo is excited to put this collection of her works together for this display and has enjoyed the process immensely.

The second Feature Artist for the month is Jan Bevan, who was born in Sydney but moved to Papua New Guinea (PNG) as an eight-month-old baby with her mother to join her father who worked as a patrol officer there after the war.

She lived there for nine years and was sent to Sydney

to complete her education as a boarder at Pymble Ladies College as there were no European schools at that time in PNG. After completing school, Jan went to Teachers College and returned to PNG to begin her career.

Jan married shortly after and had a family.

Jan then returned to the Northern Beaches in Sydney and completed a BA and MA at Sydney University, graduating in Social Sciences to teach in the high school.

Jan has lived overseas in

both the USA and Tahiti for a few years.

Upon retiring Jan’s family moved to a farm in Mudgee where she developed a love for the rural landscape.

Here there were groups of artists who welcomed and included her in various aspects of painting and art.

Jan spent many winters travelling internationally and began trying to paint the quaint towns and villages she came across.

This love of travelling inspired many of her creations.

After moving to Medowie five years ago and meeting a couple of lovely local artists, Jan decided to join the Port Stephens Community Arts Centre at Nelson Bay. Through her membership of this group of talented artists Jan has gained more experience, developing her individual style in watercolour.

There are artworks by a myriad of members of PSCAC on display at the gallery, which is located at Cultural Close, Nelson Bay and is open daily.

The CWA was formed in 1922 at a time when country women were fighting isolation and a lack of health facilities.

Founder Ruth Fairfax introduced CWA in New South Wales with the goal to improve conditions for country women and children.

Within the first year, the Association was a unified, resourceful group that was going from strength to strength.

The members worked tirelessly to set up baby health care centres, fund bush nurses, build and staff maternity wards, hospitals, schools, rest homes, seaside and mountain holiday cottages - and much more.

“We focus on providing a space for women to meet up each first Monday morning of every month for tea, coffee, cake and a good chat,” Dorothy said of the local branch’s

activities.

In the Monday catch ups and annual meetings, guest speakers teach skills and share experiences with members.

“Last year we had a guest who taught us all about Latvia, then another guest taught us how to sow, knit, crochet and other forms of arts and crafts,” said Dorothy.

“Anyone is welcome to join our monthly meet ups.

“Try it for a few weeks

and see how you like it,” said Dorothy.

There are two CWA branches in Nelson Bay. The Nelson Bay Branch meets and arranges activities in the daylight hours.

The formal meeting is the first Monday of the month at 9:30am at the CWA Hall, and meets every other Monday at the same time for a social meet up plus other activities.

Nelson Bay Evening

Branch meets and arranges most of their activities in the evening or weekends.

Their formal monthly meeting is every second Wednesday evening at 7pm, social events and other activities are as planned.

The Christmas Market will be held on November 25 from 8:30am to 12:30pm at the CWA Hall, corner Gowrie Ave and Achilles St, Nelson Bay.

Christmas Market to raise funds for charity work

Offering a range of items from scones and tea to plants grown by CWA members, the market will raise money for different local charities, one of which is Hope Cottage, where the money raised will provide food and other groceries.

PBL Awards recognise life saving action

SPECIAL congratulations go to all the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Award nominees for the week.

Sarah Foister, PBL coordinator for Karuah Public School told News Of The Area, “At Karuah Public School, Positive Behaviour for Learning continues to bring together our whole school to create and promote a supportive, safe, and positive learning environment.

“Community PBL enhances this environment by bringing together and including our wider community.

“Our school values of ‘Respect, Responsibility and Pride’ are the building blocks of our explicitly taught PBL lessons and each week these lessons are shared with our community.

“For many years we have seen the positive changes and benefits that PBL brings to our students within school and also within the community.

“We are proud to be a part of the Raymond Terrace Community PBL initiative and its ability to reinforce our school values and celebrate the outstanding students we have at Karuah Public School,” she said.

This week’s nominees • Ryder Fuller of Raymond Terrace Public School has not only displayed his PBL values but helped to save a life in doing so.

While camping with his family Ryder noticed a young girl face down in the water.

He acted immediately to raise the alarm with nearby adults.

The girl was rescued and resuscitated by public and then ambulance staff.

After time in hospital she has recovered and may not have if not for Ryder’s quick actions.

Ryder will always hold a special place in the hearts of the young girl’s family.

• Kylahni Ferguson of Irrawang Public School was nominated for a PBL award for helping a new student on the bus.

She ensured they felt safe

and that they got off at the right stop.

• Grahamstown Public School’s Mia Lawrence was nominated for a PBL Award for always being willing to assist others and constantly taking initiative to help out around the classroom and playground, whether it's picking things up, making spaces safe or helping those who are upset or hurt.

Mia has also been a positive role model for students integrating from the support unit by making them feel welcome and working with them on learning tasks.

• Irrawang High School’s Vice-Captain Ellie Winter-

Wilbow was nominated for her outstanding representative of the school on the recent CAPA tour, always helping and displaying a positive attitude.

Ellie was also instrumental in helping the recent Year 12 Halloween fundraiser to be one of the best ever held at the school.

• Hunter River High School student Washington Wacando has been nominated for being an outstanding representative of the school’s Clontarf Academy and wider community.

• Salt Ash Public School’s Evie Carleton was

nominated for always being polite and showing kindness towards her peers, staff and visiting teachers to the school.

• Mackenzie Pearson of Medowie Public School was nominated for encouraging her peers.

On an excursion to Taronga Zoo, Mackenzie supported her peer who was scared of reptiles.

She helped them into the enclosure, prompted them and created a little game as they were looking at the animals to distract them whilst giving them positive reinforcement.

nominated for supporting a younger student on the school’s new fixed equipment.

The younger student was struggling on the bars.

Grayson ensured the younger student was safe as he encouraged and supported him.

There were celebrations all around as renowned cruise operator Moonshadow-TQC Cruises was awarded gold at the 2023 NSW Tourism Awards held on Wednesday 8 November at the White Bay Cruise Terminal in Sydney. q

Locals take on Premmie Marathon Challenge

NOVEMBER is Prematurity Awareness Month and local couple Christine and Brendan Brookhouse are taking on the Premmie Marathon Challenge, raising funds to help premature and critically ill babies have a better chance of survival.

To date, Christine and Brendan have completed 34 kilometres (km) of their 100 km marathon goal.

Christine noted that she decided to join the fundraising movement at the last minute.

“I was asked by a friend of the founder if I could help share the message about the Premmie Marathon challenge and thought why not do it, and while I’m at it, I will throw Brendan in as well.”

For the founder of Running for Premmie Babies, Sophie Smith, the connection to the cause is more personal.

In 2006 Sophie and her husband Ash lost all three of their prematurely born triplets. Henry was born at 21 weeks, too early for medical intervention to save him, and he lived for one precious hour.

Jasper and Evan were born at 24 weeks and were

cared for at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick.

On the day that Sophie went into labour with Jasper and Evan, there was a critical shortage of NICU beds in Sydney, and she was warned that her babies might need to be transferred interstate, with the possibility of her babies being separated.

Luckily, Sophie’s boys weren’t born for another three days, by which time two NICU beds had become available at the Royal Hospital for Women.

Tragically, despite huge efforts to save their lives, Jasper and Evan were unable to overcome their prematurity.

Evan passed away from a brain haemorrhage when he was ten days old.

The first time Sophie and Ash held their son was when his doctors removed his life support and he died in their arms.

Their third triplet, Jasper, overcame many hurdles, doubling his birth weight, and they shared many happy

memories, but he suffered from chronic lung disease and the ventilators available were unable to support him.

When Jasper was 58 days old his lungs collapsed and no more could be done to save him.

When their babies were in hospital, Sophie and Ash realised that most of the machines that kept their boys alive were donated and learned that the hospital relies on fundraising for 70 percent of the equipment in the unit.

They also never forgot the shortage of equipment at the time of their birth.

What began as a quest to run the SMH Half Marathon and raise $20,000 for one new humidicrib for the hospital, in memory of their boys, has grown into what is now the Running for Premature Babies Foundation.

The Foundation has so far raised over $5 million for life saving neonatal equipment and funded research to solve the many mysteries of prematurity and advance the care of premature babies for the future.

Port Stephens Housing Strategy and Housing Forum A FEW months ago, I spoke about the challenges Port Stephens and many other regional communities across Australia are facing when it comes to housing.

Across Port Stephens, we’re seeing housing prices continue to rise, business continuing to see workforce shortages and more and more people struggling to find a place to call home.

On top of this, the NSW Government has set a target of 11,000 new dwellings for Port Stephens over the next 20 years.

The Port Stephens Housing Strategy is the guiding document that provides the framework for future housing growth across our towns and suburbs; it identifies what types of housing can be built, where new homes can be located and what's required to support new development.

Over the past few months, our elected Council has commenced a review of the Port Stephens housing strategy.

We’ve been working hard to find solutions and seek opportunities for housing growth.

Just last week we joined together with 50 representatives from our community, business, government, services and developers to share ideas, seek solutions and look for ways in which we can improve housing outcomes in Port Stephens.

We will continue this conversation in the New Year when we begin checking in with our community on the future of housing in Port Stephens.

We want to hear from a wide range of residents and business on the ideas proposed to encourage different types of housing, more density of housing in our town centres and how we can support more affordable housing close to shops, services and public transport.

The information we gather will be used to inform our strategy and set the direction for the future of housing in Port Stephens.

Sunrise Village expansion DEAR News Of The Area,

THE expansion of these over 55 lifestyle developments only brings more retirees into our community without regard to the strain they put on our already badly stretched community services.

Most doctor surgeries are not able to take new patients and I know from a couple of visits to our local hospital that they are being swamped by these new residents who have no local GP. Most restaurants open only three nights a week because of lack of staff.

These villages are a major source of these problems as the current review by Councillor Leah Anderson has highlighted that we need thousands of new affordable homes so that the workforce can provide the care our aged need.

The policy of Council must be to find low cost land so that the Bay area can attract workers to our area otherwise the community will shrink to holiday makers caring for themselves.

I recommend all interested in these problems to view the SBS program Meet the Neighbours that deals with the problems of shrinking regional areas because of lack of workers.

An array of arguments against offshore wind

DEAR News Of The Area,

I AM a Tea Gardens resident and a member of the Port Stephens Great Lakes Marine Park Advisory Committee.

I am also the Treasurer of the Myall Quays Community Association and a member of the Australian Institute of Energy’s Newcastle Branch.

I operated my own company for 25 years assessing public and private infrastructure projects.

I am writing to express my opposition to the proposed location of an offshore wind farm project off the MidCoast and Port Stephens area of NSW. I am aware that this project is a federal government initiative but it is also my understanding that, if power cables from this project come ashore, then those cables and supporting infrastructure come under the control of the NSW Government.

There are a number of strong arguments why the NSW MidCoast area is a poor location for this proposed facility.

Newcastle Port is one of the busiest bulk shipping ports in the world.

Newcastle Port has started development of its container terminal on Kooragang Island which is now operating and will grow greatly in volume in the future.

This will result in increasing shipping movements in and out of the Port.

A container terminal in Newcastle has huge potential to service northern NSW goods and container traffic via our excellent road and rail connections to the port.

The Inland Rail Project between Melbourne and Brisbane has suffered massive cost increases since starting and may not be completed due to these cost blowouts.

Goods traffic carried on the completed section of the Inland Rail line as well as the rest of the northern NSW rail network could easily and efficiently be transported by sea in and out of Newcastle container terminal.

The federal government is currently spending $160 million to further develop Newcastle Airport into an international airport facility to enhance local produce exports from the MidCoast region as well as international and domestic tourism.

Newcastle and the Hunter are enjoying strong growth in domestic and international tourism and its fantastic scenic appeal could be damaged in the longer term by the proposed offshore wind farm.

The Port Stephens area is an international standard scenic area of incredible natural beauty and would be adversely impacted by any offshore wind farm arrangement.

There are thousands of vessels travelling up and down the Australian east coast each year which could also be adversely affected by the offshore wind farm project.

The 300 odd wind towers will not be embedded in the ocean bottom but will be tethered by chains and anchors to the seafloor - what happens if one or more of these towers breaks loose in a big storm?

We get regular major storm events off

the NSW Mid Coast and Novocastrians and local residents can clearly remember when the Pasha Bulker was blown ashore at Newcastle a decade ago.

Bulk carriers and container vessels move quickly across the ocean and can come from the horizon to where you are in 20 minutes - what happens if a loose wind tower collides with a travelling vessel in a major storm event?

It is obvious that the federal government is ignoring adverse local opinion and resident opposition to this offshore windfarm project because we have a small local population and are seen as a “safe” Labor electorate.

As greater Sydney is the major regional user of power in NSW, why shouldn’t this offshore wind farm be located closer to Sydney?

One can just hear the screams if it was proposed to build this project off Palm Beach in northern Sydney or off the eastern suburbs - just imagine Bondi Rescue being filmed with dozens of wind towers in the ocean off the beach area!

It is apparent that the federal government is treating our local residents opposed to this project with contempt as we have a small regional population and “just don’t matter”.

The cost of building and operating these offshore wind “factories” is much higher than the cost of land based wind facilities and hence the cost to be charged for the power from them will be much higher than from alternative sources.

No matter who produces any product or service for the market, in the end someone has to buy that commodity.

It appears to me that the big driver of the international interest in these offshore electric “factories” would be the carbon credits and clean energy certificates that the investors could sell in the market to polluters to offset their carbon emissions.

It is interesting to note that Fortescue Metals Group Ltd announced on 26 October in their September 2023 Quarterly Production Report that they have completed the acquisition of the Phoenix Hydrogen Hub in the USA where Phase One proposes an 80 MW electrolyser and liquefaction facility.

They further announced that, from FY24 onwards, Fortescue will no longer buy voluntary offsets unless required by law, with the funds saved reallocated to the Company’s own decarbonisation plan and, in October 2023, Fortescue opened a new zero emission battery factory in Kidlington, UK. For these practical reasons I regard the proposed offshore wind farm in the MidCoast region as poorly sited and urge its relocation away from our magnificent environmental treasure that is the Port Stephens and MidCoast area.

DEAR News Of The Area,

I WATCHED a program on SBS Dateline about the local Indigenous peoples of Norway and their fight with big business.

It was concerning as they have had wind farms built on their lands without their permission.

The government felt it would do no harm.

But these people farm reindeer, which are herded over large areas as there is not much food. The reindeer won’t go anywhere near the windmills.

That has significantly cut their feeding grounds.

No studies were obviously conducted.

What if whales have the same reaction?

Where do they go?

Biodiversity can rebound after bushfires, but recovery lags in the most severely burnt areas EXTREME fires drove biodiversity declines despite overall resilience after the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfire season in NSW, a new study suggests.

The Black Summer Bushfires burnt an unprecedented area of over five million hectares of eastern Australia, with severe economic, environmental, and human impacts.

Now, a study conducted by UNSW Sydney researchers shows plant and animal life has struggled to rebound in locations subjected to the most severe fires.

The study, published in the journal Global Change Biology, analysed differences in species diversity in the aftermath of the 2019-2020 bushfire season in New South Wales.

The researchers found that up to eighteen months post-fire, biodiversity can recover after fires of low to high severity (when fires burnt the understorey and scorched or partially consumed the canopy) – and did increase a year and a half after the Black Summer Bushfires.

However, areas burnt by fires of extreme severity (when fires completely consumed the canopy) experienced reduced levels of biodiversity compared to unburnt and other less severe burnt regions.

Fighting misinformation

THE claim that wind turbines off the Illawarra and Hunter Valley coast would kill 400 whales a year supposedly comes from a journal called Marine Policy.

As the Sydney Morning Herald

(November 4) recently reported, the editor of the journal says that the article is a fake and no such article has ever been published.

Likewise, the claims that turbines will emit dangerous ‘infrasound’ or that the surf will be reduced along the coast have also been debunked.

The two most recent articles reporting the positions Greenpeace and EcoNetwork Port Stephens have taken provide an excellent insight into how the leadership in these two organisations is operating.

Both environmental groups are posing a dichotomy of either we have offshore wind farms or we succumb to the disastrous impacts of climate change.

Why can’t offshore wind be the second generation renewable energy source, if the scientific data eventually proves it does not pose unacceptable environmental risks?

“This initiative was critical, as long-term biodiversity monitoring data covering multiple groups of organisms, such as plants, insects, birds, and more, especially at the well as wind turbines.

How fortunate we were Stinker’s

Fishin’

By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE I WOULD like to share a special story with you which starts in 1974 when my wife Ella and I arrived in Port Stephens.

Being recently appointed to Nelson Bay High School, it was time to search for a house to buy.

With a very limited budget - nothing - we finally settled for a shack in Fingal Bay. An ordinary structure, but it was home.

Hardly anyone chose to live in Fingal, which was a bit of a ghost town between holiday times.

An elderly couple, who kept to themselves, lived next door.

They were inseparable playing golf, walking through the bushland and playing cards until all hours of the night.

Just the two of them.

I did notice that the study light burned, on many occasions, ‘til sunrise.

They were a lovely couple who always had a cheery smile.

It was soon after, when our children Jodie and Ben arrived, that we became close friends with our neighbours.

The kids could not wait to get home from school, toss their school bags in the garage and race over to spend time with the lady next door.

Bertie and Daphne Rooke really enjoyed having the kids visit as their only child, a girl called Rosemary, had left to live in England.

Our time together with the Rookes continued to grow and

it was then that I started to learn more about them.

The reason that the light burned ‘til sunlight was that Daphne, who we always called Mrs Rooke or Mrs Rookey, was a writer.

If I listened closely, on still nights, I could hear the clatter of the old typewriter hammering out words under the single beam of a lamp.

On further investigation I uncovered something very special.

Interest grew when a huge man wandered up our driveway asking to know the whereabouts of Daphne Rooke.

The man introduced himself as Dr Ian Glenn, Head of the Department of English from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

He had travelled across the world to find my neighbour.

The academic stayed for a week or two and when he wasn’t interviewing Mrs Rooke, we shared a beer and discussed the world of rugby union.

It was through the South African visitor and research gathered by local historian, Kevin McGinness, that I learnt the real story of Daphne Marie Rooke (nee Pizzey).

The Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners Advocate, on 27/5/1948, reported: ‘Prize Novelist Writes Story on Nelson’s Bay’.

‘Mrs. Rooke lives in a little house in the bush at Bardouroka with an eight year old daughter and husband, Mr I. Rooke’.

Fingal Bay was known as Bardouroka when I first arrived.

There was far more to our neighbour as the research unfolded.

Mrs Rooke's published

writings including novels, short stories and children's stories, all became part of The Daphne Rooke Collection.

The Collection was donated to the University of Cape Town Libraries in 1990

by Dr Ian Glenn.

The collection consists of approximately 209 items, mainly works, galley proofs and working copies.

Included with the working copies are corrections suggested by the publisher, and correspondence with this connection.

Also in the collection are some incomplete manuscripts, background material and rough notes.

Apart from Daphne Rooke's own writings, the collection includes reviews, journal articles and two short stories by her mother, Marie Knevitt.

Because of renewed interest in South Africa in the work of Daphne Rooke, Dr Glenn was able to receive funding from the Centre for African Studies at UCT, and from the HSRC, to visit the writer in Australia in 1988, and acquire the collection from her.

During his visit, Dr Glenn tape-recorded an interview with Daphne Rooke.

These tapes and an edited transcript of the interview form part of the collection.

Daphne Rooke was born in Boksburg, South Africa, in 1914.

Her talent for writing was recognised and encouraged by her mother, Marie Knevitt, a journalist and writer of short stories.

Her first novel, `A Grove of Fever Trees', was co-winner of an Afrikaanse Pers literary competition in 1950.

Her novels were

over 70 centimetres must be released.

I have been launching in Kiddies Corner on Fingal Beach for years and in recent times I have been joined by an increasing number of those who prefer to fish out of kayaks which are far more sophisticated than the canoes of the past.

Fingal Bay champ Keith Collins continues to improve his methods as he launches in the quiet southern corner of Fingal Bay and heads for the surrounding reefs, either south to Battleship Island or east to Fingal Island.

Both trips, around a kilometre and a half in distance, offer the opportunity

to tangle with salmon, tailor, kingfish or the real prize, snapper – big snapper.

It is snapper that Keith targets and recent results suggest that he is on track.

Crackers to five kilograms have been attacking his floating cubed yellowtail bait on a 4/0 – 6/0 hook. Keith drifts along the edges of the reefs allowing the line to peel freely off the reel.

When he notices the line flying off, he engages the reel and it's all action from there on.

Other kayakers I know prefer to drift and toss plastics and are returning to the beach with similar results.

Give it a go.

A kayak for Christmas

By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE FOR fishers it doesn’t get any better than summer in Port Stephens.

With the water warming and more pleasant weather forecast we can expect an invasion of thumping summer whiting to arrive any time.

From Stockton Beach to Fingal Beaches whiting nose into the sand searching for worms and tiny pipis before entering the port and taking up residence over the huge area of sand flats.

Flatheads are already active, particularly west of Little Island off Soldiers Point.

Remember that any flatty

particularly popular in the USA in the 1950s and early 1960s.

According to Dr Glenn, she was the South African writer with the widest international exposure and the greatest commercial success at that time.

Her books were published by serious publishers and received appreciative notices in leading critical reviews of the time in the USA and Britain.

She used indigenous material and dealt with major historical issues of the day.

In spite of these factors, or perhaps because of them, her books were not well received in South Africa.

One of her novels, `The Greyling', was banned in South Africa in 1962.

Dr Glenn describes some of the early South African reviews of her books as "uncomprehending” and believes that some of her work "deserves recognition and rethinking".

She married Irvin Rooke, an Australian, and eventually settled in Australia.

She also travelled extensively in Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India, and some of her stories have been set in these places.

She has a daughter, Rosemary, and two grandchildren, living in England.

As neighbours, we had not the slightest indication of the esteem in which Mrs Rooke was held in the international sphere.

Irvin ‘Bertie’ Rooke was a typical Aussie from a previous generation.

Originally a Balmain boy, he grew up with a great mate Archie Jackson who, after playing eight Test Matches for Australia, was considered by many in the cricketing world to be the equal to Don Bradman until his early death from tuberculosis at the age of

In his early days, young Irvin played the piano in cinemas as a backing to silent movies.

Later he was to move into the building trade where he was known as Bert.

“Piano players are not named Bert and builders are not named Irvin,” he explained to me.

I recall Bertie telling me he headed overseas with a builder, a man named Sheahan, who he was to learn was the father of test cricketer Paul Sheahan.

It was while he was overseas that he met Daphne.

Berty loved his golf.

He also loved a punt on the horses.

He spent hours studying the form guides before a decision was made.

He refused to give me a tip because he said that he didn’t want to see me lose any money.

In his later years he spent time in hospital.

On one occasion he was asked by the surgeon, “What does an old fellow like you do in a place like Fingal Bay?” To which Berty replied, “I play golf three days a week, I play bridge two days a week and on Saturdays I bet on the horses.”

“That is only six days, what do you do on the other day?” asked the doctor.

“Ah, on Sundays I pray for long drives, good cards and fast horses.”

Bertie passed away in 1989, leaving Mrs Rooke alone.

Our entire family pleaded with her to live with us, however, she chose to travel to England to reunite with her daughter.

We visited her in England in 2006 before she passed.

Daphne Marie Rooke died on 21/1/2009 at Cambridge, England, aged 94 years.

How fortunate we were to have the Rookes as our next door neighbours.

NSW Baggy Blues cap for Tomaree High batting trump Lucas

LIFE is full of rewards for Salamander Bay’s cricket young gun Lucas Vincent.

Three weeks after making his first grade debut for the Stockton & Northern District Seagulls in the Newcastle District Cricket competition, the sixteen-year-old run machine has earned a Baggy Blues cap with the NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) representative team.

It is another milestone moment for the Tomaree High School all rounder, who is touted as one of the State’s most promising young batsmen.

Lucas, a stylish top order bat and left arm off spinner, will represent NSW CHS in a State Championship round robin series against Combined Catholic Colleges and Combined Independent Schools next February 2024 in Maitland.

“I’m excited and honoured

to play for Combined High Schools and want to make the most of my opportunities,” a dedicated Lucas told News Of The Area.

“Just mixing with so many talented players and having a cricket mentor such as Stockton and Newcastle rep captain Nick Foster can only benefit my game,” he revealed.

Since carving out a polished 39 on debut in the Seagull’s opening round limited overs top grade victory over HamiltonWickham at Lynn Oval, the schoolboy prodigy continues to shine in the batting stakes.

At the recent Combined High Schools Sports Association Cricket Championships at Campbelltown, Lucas was part of a strong Hunter representative squad that finished runners up to South Coast in the trophy final.

The talented Vincent compiled impressive knocks

of 68 not out and 43 not out against Sydney West and North West before cracking a superb 62 in a comprehensive semi final triumph over Western at Bradbury Oval.

Opening the batting, Lucas shared a second wicket partnership of 140 with centurion Harry Scowen (Muswellbrook High) to guide Hunter to an imposing total of 4-300.

The Hunter side advanced to the final by skittling Western for a meagre 77.

In the championship decider, South Coast (8-139) prevailed in an epic tussle after rolling Hunter for 138 with Lucas demonstrating his ability to absorb pressure with a gritty innings of 39 in tough conditions.

Vincent is joined in the NSW CHS First X1 by rising keeper-batsman Scowen and emerging Hunter Sports High cricketers Austin Hiskens, Johan Roser and Harry Campbell.

Top Hunter Sports High prospects Kel Wilson and Kade Sutton were named in the NSW CHS Second X1 after outstanding performances with bat and ball.

In a huge fillip for the Hunter region, Lucas and five of his team mates are already entrenched in first grade on the Newcastle District Cricket scene.

Vincent (Stockton & Northern Districts) along with Newcastle City trio Scowen, pace ace Roser and off spinner Campbell, batting all rounder Hiskens (CardiffBoolaroo) and Charlestown batsman Wilson are currently gaining valuable top grade experience while leg spinner Sutton has left his mark in the Charlestown second grade side.

Lucas has a hectic schedule ahead which includes top grade appearances for the Seagulls in the domestic competition and padding up for both Newcastle in the Bradman Cup and the Hawkesbury club in Sydney Cricket’s A.W Green

Super year for Soldiers Point Women Bowlers

IT'S been a bumper year for Soldiers Point Women bowlers who have won in both open and senior district and regional championships.

Vacie McIntyre, after narrowly missing out last year, won the senior regional singles championship over Janine Katon of Aberdeen 2518. To cap it off Vacie also was

awarded the prestigious NSW Female Breakout player of the year, well deserved after a brilliant year for this bowler.

Leisa Burton, who won the district major open singles crown went down gallantly 2516 in the regional final to Kurri Kurri’s Eugenie Muncaster.

The Fours team brought home the major open regional title defeating Aberdeen 3013. Congratulations Robyn

Flanagan, Sandra Ball, Leisa Burton and Missy Witts.

Dynamic duo Rosita Ryan and Julie Schumacher won the senior regional pairs against Muswellbrook 26 -13. In addition the senior regional triples title was won by Betty Herbertson, Vacie McIntyre and Jan Sutherland, defeating East Maitland 24 -11.

Next stop, will be the state playoffs in Dubbo.

State Masters title for Nelson Bay hockey stalwarts

THE cream of Nelson Bay’s senior hockey talent have reason to smile after sharing the spoils at this year’s NSW Masters Hockey State Championship in Taree.

Six Bay stalwarts featured in the all-conquering Hunter squad that finished joint champions with Central

Coast in the Over 50 Womens category.

They were Nelson Bay Hockey Club president Cathy Churchill, Nicole Mulder, Claire Hendley, Juliet O’Rourke, Margy Galloway and ace attacker Roslyn Pollock.

Another player to shine was Scone product Linda Hunt, who played a key role in helping the Hunter side

register three wins and three draws in a competitive division.

Hunter and Central Coast were declared joint winners of the State Masters Northern Conference title after posting a nil-all draw in the Grand Final at Taree Hockey Centre.

PAMELA Barnwell won the Nelson Bay Croquet Club’s Thompson Trophy A Grade competition in June 2023 and entered the NSW 2023 Golf Croquet Champion of Champions on behalf of Nelson Bay. The competition was played Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 November at Tempe, CNSW’s headquarters.

Seven clubs were represented: Canberra, Nelson Bay, Newcastle NP, Queanbeyan, Royal Sydney

Golf Club, Sutherland and Toronto.

The seven players played a qualifying round-robin block of untimed 13-point games.

Pamela won four of six games to finish second to Grant Denyer (Sutherland).

In the best-of-three final, Pamela was in top form to run out the 7-5 7-1 winner.

“Many women have played the game since their youth and others have just started and enjoy the exercise and friendship,” she exclaimed.

“Our club at Nelson Bay encourages all players of any skill level to come along and have a crack,” Cathy added.

q Nelson Bay senior netballers Rebecca Keating, Linda Jones, Fiona McGrath, Kate Lily, Trudie Paton, Colleen Hopper, Hannah Riseley, Louise Bevilacqua, Elaine Boskovic and Nicole Mackenzie were fine ambassadors for the region at the recent Netball NSW Masters State titles at Sydney Olympic Park.

THEY’RE efficient on and off court and kindred spirits with a steely determination and penchant for good old fashioned fun.

Meet the evergreen Nelson Bay Netball Association (NBNA) stalwarts that competed at this year’s Netball NSW Masters State titles at Sydney Olympic Park.

With an emphasis on team effort and pure enjoyment, the Nelson Bay women warriors showed courage and skill against the best senior talent in the State – turning in wholehearted performances throughout the two day Carnival last month.

Eastwood-Ryde were crowned NSW Masters champions after edging out Manly-Warringah on percentages.

Nelson Bay chalked up victories over Macleay (15-12) and Macleay 2 (107) teams and pushed the

PFAS Independent Review Call for submissions

PFAS INDEPENDENT REVIEW I am proud to announce that as part of the Albanese Government’s commitment to addressing the PFAS contamination around the RAAF Base Williamtown, the Independent Review has now commenced.

Public submissions for the Australian Government’s Independent Review of land (PFAS) contamination will open from 9am AEDT Monday 23 October 2023 until 9pm AEDT Sunday 3 December 2023.

The Review will focus on communities around RAAF Base Williamtown, and other communities affected by historic use of PFAS are also able to make submissions.

In addition to calling for submissions, a public hearing will be held on the following date. Times are in local time zones.
