By Sue STEPHENSON MARINE Rescue volunteers at Port Stephens and Lemon Tree Passage are ready for a season of peak demand after equalling their busiest month on record. November saw crews from the Hunter Central Coast, which covers units from Terrigal to Port Stephens, conduct a combined 125 search and rescue missions. This included 31 emergency responses, with 252 people safely returned to shore. Lake Macquarie was the area of highest demand with 54 search and rescue missions, followed by the Central Coast with 26 and Port Stephens with seventeen. “The large number of search and rescue missions performed by our volunteers across the state in November indicates that Marine Rescue NSW is anticipating an extremely busy holiday season ahead,” Marine Rescue

FROM Page 1 grouping of new wind and solar power generation into locations where it can be efficiently stored and transmitted across NSW. Five zones across the state, including the HunterCentral Coast, have been identified as suitable. EnergyCo is in the early stages of planning the REZ in the Hunter and Central Coast, to utilise the region’s renewable energy resources, existing power stations, rehabilitated mining land, electricity network infrastructure, port and transport infrastructure and skilled workforce. According to the agreement, Ausgrid will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the network infrastructure for the HunterCentral Coast REZ. This will be the first REZ in Australia to leverage the distribution network of poles and wires, rather

than a transmission network; Ausgrid will do this by upgrading existing infrastructure. The Government says the project will allow for the delivery of an additional one gigawatt (GW) of network transfer capacity, to get more renewable energy into the state’s electricity grid. It will also enable new renewable energy generation and storage providers to connect to the network. Signing the commitment deed allows EnergyCo and Ausgrid to begin community consultation, finalise the design, finalise regulatory and planning approvals and commence construction, subject to approvals. Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Penny Sharpe said, “The appointment of Ausgrid demonstrates our commitment to finding innovative solutions to quickly increase the supply of reliable, renewable energy in a way that minimises impacts

on communities and the environment. “Hunter-Central Coast communities will see economic benefits from more jobs, opportunities for local businesses through the local first program, and the potential for new industries to set up in the area.” Minister for the Hunter, Yasmin Catley said the REZ would “help shore up our

“By enhancing our existing medium-voltage network, we are enabling a faster and cheaper integration of renewables into the grid, minimising the impact on communities. “The proposed upgrades will facilitate more than 1 GW of energy into the grid, which is enough to power around one-million homes.”

Marine rescuers expecting high demand after equalling monthly record

q MRNSW Commissioner Alex Barrell. Photo: Marine Rescue NSW

FROM Page 1 NSW Commissioner Alex Barrell said. “”Our units in the Hunter Central Coast and Monaro regions equalled their busiest-ever November. “I can’t thank all of our volunteers enough for their round-the-clock response to assist boaters on the state’s waterways.” Additionally, Marine Rescue NSW radio operators managed 17,818 radio calls last month and kept watch

over 19,367 people on board 5352 logged-on vessels. Commissioner Barrell reminded boaters and paddlers to Log On and Off with Marine Rescue NSW. “Marine Rescue NSW has the capability to assist those in need on enclosed, inland and offshore waters, with more than 120 rescue vessels able to be rapidly deployed. “A sudden change in conditions, combined with engine failure or running out of fuel in the wrong location, can lead to life-threatening

incidents, such as capsizing or running aground. “Our message to boaters this holiday season is ‘prep now, boat later’. “Make sure your vessel is in good working order, you have the correct safety equipment, always wear a lifejacket, have plenty of clean fuel, monitor the weather, and always log on with Marine Rescue NSW either via the free Marine Rescue NSW app or VHF channel 16.”

(BOCSAR) shows the number of incidents in each of the thirteen major offence categories was stable over the 24 months to September 2024. BOCSAR Executive Director Jackie Fitzgerald, said in a statement that while property crime had been in decline since at least 2018, there had been persistent

increases in recorded incidents of domestic and sexual assault. “Given that… as of September 2024, not a single major violent or property offence has significantly increased over the past twoyears.” This was also the case across Sydney. Motor vehicle theft was

Crime ‘stable’ but 10-year trends show regional assaults rising By Sue STEPHENSON

another offence that had been increasing, largely due to trends in regional areas. These appear to be stabilising in all but five of the state’s 28 statistical regions. Also remaining steady are the number of court actions against adults and young people. While stable crime rates are good news, the trends of the past decade are not. Figures also released by BOCSAR show that over the past ten years, sexual assaults have risen in every regional area by an average eight point two percent per year. Domestic violence-related assaults are up by an average three percent per year, and are still rising, in all but one regional location. There were significant increases in two other major offences over the past ten years. These are shoplifting and sexual touching, sexual acts and other sexual offences. BOCSAR has an interactive crime tool that shows crime rates across regional towns and local government areas. It can be found online at crimetool.bocsar.nsw.gov.au/ bocsar/.

q The NSW crime map shows sexual and domestic assaults in the Nambucca LGA between 2023-2024 were above the state average.

In NSW, all animals need to be microchipped by 12 weeks, or before they are given away/sold. The breeder is required to submit paperwork to transfer the animal into the new owner’s name, however too often this process is not completed. To maximise the chance that your pet will be reunited with you if they go missing, it is your responsibility to ensure that their microchip details are current, and that they always wear a collar and tag with contact information. You can update your pet’s details online by visiting https://www.petregistry.olg.nsw.gov. au/ and logging in using your My Service NSW details. If you do not know your pet’s microchip number, contact yout veterinary clinic for assistance. Give your pet the best chance of returning home and update their chip!

‘Milestone’ recruit for Port Stephens-Hunter ONE of only nine officers to graduate from a new police program has been assigned to the Port Stephens-Hunter Police District. The Probationary Constable was swornin on Friday 13 December, and started working in the region the following Monday, 16 December. Their appointment is through the inaugural Professional Mobility Program, which allows police officers from other jurisdictions within Australia and New Zealand to train and work in NSW. Commissioner Karen Webb said the seven male and two female graduates represented a significant milestone for the force. “Each officer’s past service brings diverse experience, skills and knowledge that will prove invaluable to not only the officers they serve alongside but also the people of NSW.” The officers range in age from 21-years to over 40-years-old. They completed

a twelve-week course consisting of theory, fitness, driving, and defence and tactical training, and will serve as Probationary Constables during a minimum six months’ on-thejob training.

After that, they will retain their substantive rank of Constable or Senior Constable. Port Stephens-Hunter is the most northern coastal command to be assigned a graduate. The other eight have been deployed to Sutherland, Ryde, Parramatta, the South Coast (2), the Central

West, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie. Police and Counterterrorism Minister Yasmin Catley said the scheme, along with paid study and the recent historic pay agreement, has led to an increase in applications to join the force, and a more diverse range of recruits. “Becoming a police officer in NSW is the most attractive it has been in decades.”

Stinker’s Fishin’: Fish are everywhere By John ‘Stinker’ CLARKE

A WARM welcome to all our visitors to the most amazing holiday destination. Port Stephens has got it all. The real good news for the anglers is that the fishing inside and outside the Port, plus the beaches, is red hot! The question that I am most regularly asked, particularly at this time of the year, is “Where are they biting?”. The answer is “everywhere!”. Snapper, which have been recently reported up to 10kg, are in great numbers over all the reefs and in the washes from Birubi to Broughton. Kingfish, tailor and the odd salmon are scattered among the snapper.

PORT Stephens Power returned to the winners list in the Newcastle District Senior Cricket Division One series with a 35 run triumph over Warners Bay at King Park. In a low scoring fixture the Pythons prevailed – despite a magnificent bowling performance by Warners Bay spearhead Matthew White. The talented White stole the show in the sweltering heat – grabbing the incredible figures of

6-10 off 34 deliveries in a bowling masterclass. He was supported by Jesse Ballenden (3-26 off eight overs) and Simon Smith (1-17 off eight) as the Port Stephens X1 were bundled out for 105. Openers Tyran Eveleigh (35) and Leigh Williams (29) laid a solid foundation for the Pythons before the wily White produced his magic. Jason Eveleigh (4-10 off five overs) shone with the ball and combined with Lachlan Freeman (2-11 off five), Jarrod Moxey (2-28), Tyran Eveleigh (1-6) and Lleyton

Vice captain Kayne Bradley top scored for the Bay with 22 runs off 33 deliveries including four boundaries in a one man batting show. Port Stephens (24 points) still leads the Division Two standings on percentages despite a loss to The Gardens Falcons in their top-of-thetable clash at Walters Park. An unbeaten 107 by opener Jivanjot Singh steered the Falcons (5-164) to victory after the Pythons had earlier registered 7-162.

Dashing half centuries from gun all rounder Paul Gilbert and Paul Rimmington laid the platform for victory as the Blacks posted an imposing 3-191 off their 20 overs. Gilbert smashed 67 off only 30 balls including six towering sixes and four boundaries while Rimmington cracked 61 off 58 balls with seven boundaries. The pair shared an opening stand of 97 before Gilbert was stumped by Pythons keeper David

Freeman off the bowling of spinner Paul Le Mottee. Number four Ben BakerWaldsax hit an unbeaten 30 off fifteen deliveries with two sixes and three boundaries while Rahul Bakshi contributed 21 runs. The gifted Gilbert capped a best on ground performance by snaring the impressive figures of 4-15 off 24 deliveries and Wijekoon Mudiyanselage (2-28 off four overs). Cardiff-Boolaroo will face Wallsend in the Masters Twenty20 Grand Final after the Tigers (2136) eliminated Merewether Blue (4-130) in the other semi final at George Farley Oval. Nigel Deacon (40), Scott Telfer (36 not out), Barry Richards (33 not out) and Guy Nixon (23) led the way for Wallsend before Matt Holwell grabbed 2-21 with the ball. Merewether were best served by Simon Abson (40 runs with two sixes and four boundaries); Jayson Pratten (39 not out) and opener Brent Watson (21).

Young gun Hunter Chappell (78) and Simon Fawkner (74) posted half centuries in a Division Eight loss to Merewether at Myers Park. The pair recorded an opening stand of 131 as Nelson Bay amassed 9-197 off their 35 overs with John O’Neill (3-18), Charlie Skelly (2-10) and Mitch Mullard (2-14) the pick of the Merewether bowlers. Chappell faced 56 deliveries and hammered eleven boundaries and two sixes in a super knock while Fawkner clouted twelve boundaries – to no avail. O’Neill (45 not out), Jacob Anderson (45) and James Collins (32) guided Merewether (4-198) to victory in the 32nd over.

NEW YEAR’S EVE: WELCOME TO NYE

BIG FAT QUIZ OF THE YEAR 2024

SBS, 7.30pm

ABC TV, 8.30pm

SUNDAY

LOVE ME

ABC TV, 8.40pm

Fans of classic Aussie dramasLove My Way and The Secret Life of Us are sure to fall head over heels for this captivating homegrown series, if they haven’t been wooed by it already. In tonight’s penultimate episode of season one, grieving husband Glen (a brilliant Hugo Weaving) and his children Clara (Bojana Novakovic, pictured) and Aaron (William Lodder) head to the banks of Melbourne’s Yarra River (which has never looked better) to belatedly scatter the ashes of their late wife and mother Christine (Sarah Peirse). With that heartbreaking task completed, they go on to meet Glen’s intriguing new love interest Anita (Heather Mitchell).

Party animals assemble! Zan Rowe, Charlie Pickering and Concetta Caristo (pictured) are here to see us through the colourful celebrations as we bid adieu to 2024. Earlybirds need not worry: those with an alarm set for tomorrow morning can still join in the fun with the 9pm Calling Country fireworks. From 9.10pm, the nightowls of the nation can kick on with an impressive three-hour live music event, featuring Fanning Dempsey National Park, Casey Donovan, Aussie hitmaker Cyril, K-Rap crew 1300, G Flip and more. Arguably the world’s most picturesque place to ring in the New Year, Sydney Harbour again plays host to the festivities, with a dazzling fireworks display lighting up the Opera House and Harbour Bridge at midnight.

Each year, question master Jimmy Carr (pictured) quizzes an assembled group of comedians to see how much attention they’ve paid to the news over the past 12 months. Spoiler alert: it’s not much! On air since 2004, this staple of the holiday season always delivers on laughs, fun facts and chaotic guest appearances. Find out what Richard Ayoade, Katherine Ryan, Rob Beckett, Judi Love, Chris McCausland and Maisie Adam recall from the year gone by as Carr quizzes them on British PM Rishi Sunak’s childhood, what tennis ace Andy Murray posted online upon his retirement, which music trend dominated the conversation this summer and why one might be “looking for a man in finance”. The perfect way to celebrate the year that was. 2712
