AFTER exhaustive deliberation, the preliminary judges have come up with the top 21 finalists for this year’s Port Stephens Literature Awards. Some nine judges read the entries and then have a round table discussion (sometimes rather heated) about the ones which impressed them. A short list of 20 is then chosen. This year they selected 21 as it was just too hard to reject one of them. These short stories are now in the hands of the three finalists’ judges who independently rate them from one to 21. Dear Jasminda,
What is the arrangement for bill-splitting? Whenever we go out as a group, there’s always someone who orders up big and then we pay for it. What is the delicate way to arrange this? Miss JV, Tea Gardens THIS is a fraught situation, Miss JV. People fall into all sorts of categories when it comes to dining out. We all know the hand-sitters. When the time comes to pay, these types literally sit on their hand, perhaps concerned that their appendage will take on a mind of its own and try to offer some money towards the meal. One step up from the hand-sitters, are the wallet openers. They open and close their wallets as though this equates to getting out some cold, hard cash, but they pause long enough for someone else to say, “Hey, I’ve got this.” Then we have the faulty-carders. They flash around their credit card, and then realise it has expired. “I’ll get it next time,” they offer, as you go to the teller to withdraw more money and wonder why you didn’t stay home and watch Netflix. How about the couples who order delicacies for their child? Yep, because we all know how much kids love deepfried coconut prawns. The little treasure will just push around their rice, add a bit of slobber, make the meal inedible, and then you’ll end up paying for it. But wait, there’s more. We can’t forget the couples who forget to bring any wine, but are incredibly grateful that you are happy to share the $80 bottle of plonk you’ve been saving for a special occasion. And hey, since you’ve only managed one glass (they are fast drinkers) you may as well be the designated driver. It’s a win-win! Finally, who can forget the hair-finder. Yep, this person will happily devour their entire meal, but on the last piece of lettuce, they’ll find a hair, probably their own, and then make a scene in front of the poor wait staff who earn $8 an hour for the privilege of serving people tighter than a fish’s . . . let’s just go with a fish’s mouth. So there you have it. To avoid these scenarios, I would suggest avoiding people at all costs, but if you must dine out, go to one of those places where you place your order at the counter. Arrive early and never, under any circumstances, be the last one standing. Sometimes you have to beat people at their own miserable game. I’m back! Jasminda.

PBL Winners By Rachael VAUGHAN THIS week’s PBL winners are a deserving group of students, striving to be their best. The PBL program, which stands for “Positive Behaviour for Learning” is a behaviour program in all five Raymond Terrace schools, that concentrates on rewarding good behaviour and not focusing on the less than positive. It is run in other schools across New South Wales, and has been met with wonderful results and feedback. Around three years ago, it was decided to move PBL out into the community and publicly reward the students on a weekly basis at the MarketPlace shopping centre.
News Of The Area will feature the winners each week within our publication, giving further public acknowledgement of the efforts of these students. This week’s winners are; Jayden Maidstone, Hunter River High School - Awarded for his community spirit and thoughtfulness. After being awarded overall winner for the Youth of the Year competition, Jayden kindly offered one of his prizes to the runner up. Tyson Henderson, Irrawang High School - For displaying PBL expectations by always completing his work, showing readiness and enthusiasm to learn and always helping his maths teacher Ms Ryan.
Ashlea Hennessy, Irrawang Public School - For being honest and returning money that she found to the
Vines exhibition officially open to the public on 11 November. Peter told News of the Area, “Art in the Vines has developed into a significant exhibit these days, with many, many people looking forward
to the event.” “I know different business and corporations, like Hunter New England Health, go along and purchase works to place in their businesses.” In a special experience,

Soundabout rocks the Seabreeze By Rachael VAUGHAN
THE Seabreeze Hotel in Nelson Bay has all you need for a great night out. They have recently undergone extensive renovations and refurbishments to transform

Soundabout’s interactive approach. They play wirelessly which allows them to step off the stage to take the performance to you, so don’t be surprised if you turn around and you’re toe tapping and singing along with a guitarist or two. The band told News Of The Area, “One thing is for sure

Operation Christmas Child By Rachael VAUGHAN
A RECORD number of Christmas appeal boxes are leaving a Raymond Terrace church, with the sole purchase of making sure some very special children have a wonderful Christmas. The Hunter-Barrington Presbyterian Church in Adelaide Street, Raymond Terrace has participated this year in the Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’ appeal. They have filled over 130

boxes with presents, love, prayers and encouragement for children. The Samaritan’s Purse ‘Operation Christmas Child’ appeal is the largest of its kind and has delivered more than 135 million shoeboxes of love since its inception. Their goal this year is to deliver 370,000 gift-filled boxes to children in seven nations. In many cases, the children receiving these boxes may not have ever received a present, and the impact that
can be made from such an experience is immeasurable. Boxes have a list of requirements to include, as well as cards, notes of encouragement and prayers being suggested as great additions before the boxes are packed. Each box needs to include something from each of the six categories of; Something to wear, something to play with, something for school, something to love, something special and something for personal hygiene.

Donators are asked to consider that one of these items be a ‘wow’ item that a child would not ever have had, like a soccer ball or doll. Church representative Vanessa Tso told News Of The Area, ‘We have been so humbled by how many people from the church and the wider community have been willing to help out a child in need.” “We are so excited to send these boxes off and make sure these children feel our love at Christmas time.”
55 players took part BOWLING
Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA TEA Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News 1 November The Club welcomed seven visitors today for the weekly Nominated Triples competition.
q Hannah White, Lauren Tso and Alistair Tso with just some of the 130 boxes going overseas this week from Raymond Terrace. It was great to see some old mates from Karuah competing as well as Eric Robb from Wyong BC. They are welcome anytime! All in all 55 players took part on a beautiful spring day. There were five teams that managed two wins. It did not take Mark Hair long to get back into the winners circle. He anchored the winning team along with partners, Ken Devlin and Col Amos. (Some say he acquired a French accent whilst over in gay Paree).
3 November The Friday Open Jackpot Pairs has been replaced for the time being with “Five Dollar Friday”. The organisers felt that we were not attracting enough bowlers to host a jackpot event. It remains however as an “open” competition with both men and women able to participate. The cost of competing has been reduced to $5.00 for a trial period and if this attracts sufficient numbers some prizemoney will be considered.

Terrace urged
to try AFL By Rachael VAUGHAN
LOOK out Raymond Terrace, there’s a new sport in town. When you think of football in Raymond Terrace, you automatically think of Rugby League. But as has been the case in many Rugby League heartland areas, the emergence of Australia’s native game is starting to be felt. Australian rules football has arrived in the Port Stephens area, and it won’t be going anywhere. The Port Stephens Power Football Club is open for business for those who are wanting a change from Rugby League, and are ready to welcome them into the Aussie Rules fold. real go, we’d love to see you at training.” Club Vice President Beau Pitcher believes Port Stephens Power can give the local area a true sporting alternative. “I think once the people
of Port Stephens experience a live game of Aussie Rules, they’ll be hooked.” “There really is nothing like it. it’s non-stop, it’s fast and it’s full of skill,” she said. If you would like to find
