Pesky Myna Birds By Rachael VAUGHAN THE Indian or Common Myna is an introduced bird species that has unfortunately called many parts of Australia home. Port Stephens and its surrounding areas have certainly felt the brunt of this pest. However, local residents are fighting back in the hope of bringing back the native birds and mammals that have been driven out by the Myna invasion. The Port Stephens Indian Myna Action Group has declared war on the unwanted neighbour that many of us cringe at. Medowie resident Carla Kleber created the Group and has enlisted the help of some heavy hitting locals in her fight. “We lived at our residence for seven years and never had any issues with Indian Mynas until last year,” Ms Kleber told
Page 7
News Of The Area. “Now, they’ve moved in in a big way.” Ms Kleber has purchased two Myna traps and has had some success catching eleven birds thus far, but as many residents would know, the tranquil peace and quiet doesn’t stay around for long. “Native birds move back in when they’re gone but I’m sad to say this doesn’t last long as they move straight back in.” Ms Kleber is not alone in the fight, but the cost of traps and the process of disposing of the birds is an obstacle for many people. Well, it used to be. The Raymond Terrace Men’s Shed has put their hand up and has pledged to make Myna traps for only $70 each. A bargain considering many traps online sell for between $100 to $200 or more. That helps with trapping the birds, but what about

indicates that people should avoid all contact with the water. According to Council, contact with the water may also pose a threat to animals, with residents urged to keep pets away from the bloom. Animals can become very sick as a result of drinking water affected by blue green algae. Warning signs will be positioned around the lake and remain until the algae subsides. Blue-green algae may cause severe stomach upsets, nausea and skin irritation in both people and animals. If contact with eyes or skin occurs, the area should be washed with clean water as soon as possible.
NSW Health advises people who believe they may have been affected by the algae to seek medical treatment. Blue-green algae usually appears as green paint-like scum on the water near the edges, or as greenish clumps throughout the water. It makes the water appear dirty, green or discoloured and generally has a strong musty or earthy odour. Blue-green algae
occurs naturally and can reproduce quickly in favourable conditions where there is still or slow-flowing water, abundant sunlight and sufficient levels of nutrients. It is not possible to predict how long the algae will remain at high levels. Regular monitoring will continue and the alert will be lifted as soon as the high levels of algae dissipate. Port Stephens Council
PORT Stephens Council has been named a finalist in the 2018 Hunter Safety Awards for its leading workplace mental health program, which aims to reduce stigma and provide better support for workers who are experiencing mental health issues. The Awards recognise companies and individuals in the Hunter region who are demonstrating bestpractice and innovative approaches in workplace
health and safety. Nicole Le Grange, Council’s Work Health and Safety Manager, says it’s an honour to have Port Stephens Council’s strong commitment to mental health acknowledged. “We want to send our workers home in the same or better condition than how they came to work – and that goes for mental health just as much as physical health,” Ms Le Grange said. “We saw an opportunity to improve
how mental health is identified, approached, managed and followed up in the workplace. “Along with a new procedure, we rolled out mental health awareness training for our entire workforce, including comprehensive training for Managers. “We also introduced Mental Health Contact Officers, trained volunteers who are there to listen and direct people to where they can seek professional advice,” she added.
say they will continue to monitor the bloom and will further advise the public as the situation changes. Information updates about bluegreen algae blooms and red level warning areas can be obtained from the Regional Algal Coordinating Committee free-call Algal Information Hotline on 1800 999 457 or visit – www. water.nsw.gov.au
Ms Le Grange says the program had immediate benefits for the entire workforce. “What we really wanted was to get people talking and to reduce the stigma that so often comes with mental health, and I think we’ve been able to achieve that. “But the job isn’t over – we’ll continually work to ensure that Council provides a platform for consistent and high quality management of mental health in our workplace,” she said.

Special Valentine
By Rachael VAUGHAN
VALENTINE’S Day is coming around quickly, but if you haven’t yet planned something special, have no fear, News Of The Area has the perfect plans for you to help celebrate this historically mushy, sentimentally fantastic day. Our local businesses have you covered from head to toe for that perfect night out with someone special, and you’ll get those warm and fuzzy feelings too that you’re also supporting locally owned businesses while you enjoy the evening. To kick off the day/ evening, treat your significant other half to a hair salon treat and book an appointment with the lovely ladies at Headz Up Hair Salon on Ferodale Road, Medowie.
Owner Karla David told News Of The Area, “Come into the salon and we’ll make sure you leave feeling nothing less than amazing for your special day with a special someone.” You’re sure to clock up extra brownie points that they are feeling pampered even before you start the evening. While they’re at their salon appointment, pop over and visit Sharon at Absolutely Beautiful Flowers in the main street of Raymond Terrace, and pick up a stunning bouquet of flowers, and maybe even a little gift as well. Sharon stocks the most extensive range available locally of the decadent Glasshouse candles, including the Limited Edition candle ‘Love is Love’, which is perfect for a Valentine’s Day

present with meaning and sentiment. Sharon told News Of The Area, “Our local men and women are in love all year round, and it’s so lovely to see them excited and so mushy.” “It’s been a pleasure to see Valentine’s Day grow over my last ten years in business, to be something that is so celebrated and just about caring so much for someone else.” For dinner, we have all areas of Port Stephens and the Myall Coast covered, depending on what you’re looking for. Sienna’s Pizzeria Bar and Restaurant at Nelson Bay is hosting a ‘Surprise your Lover’ evening, with a free glass of Presecco on arrival for couples. The Nest Cafe in Hawks Nest is a new business on the
Myall Coast that is well worth trying out. They offer a menu with something for everyone, in a location that is perfectly situated for a stroll along the beach after lunch or dinner. The Greenhouse Eatery in Medowie is calling on all couples to book a romantic dinner for two with them, and partake in a complimentary glass of bubbles on arrival. Elizabeth, the Greenhouse Marketing and Events Manager, told News Of The Area, “Show your loved one how much you care by booking dinner with us.” “You can indulge in one of our special treats, or anything from our regular menu that you know and love.” “We pride ourselves in providing the highest quality food and service,” she said. Whatever your plans for Valentine’s Day, News Of The Area hopes you are spending it with someone special.

I encountered this joyful experience last week when I used the facility for the first time. It was important for me to load the entire family in the car and reminisce about the good old days when we crushed cans and received pocket money for them. I spoke fondly about raiding garbage bins and designing can crushers with my friends. The backseat crew seemed unimpressed. When we rounded the first corner of our journey, the recycling tubs in the boot tipped over, and the combined stench of stale beer, chardonnay and ginger ale filled the car. Still, I persevered, arriving at the car park, only to realise, in the 35-degree heat, that there were no parks. I ended up on the other side of the centre, and we walked with our bins of trash to the recycling facility. There we met a lovely man who said, “The bloody thing is full again. You’ll have to come back later, love.” We carried our cans back to the car and did some shopping (not too much, as there was no space in the boot to put it). When we were leaving, there was a new crowd of people and the conveyor belts were operational again (only two of them, the others had malfunctioned). We found another park and stood in the queue, only realising at that point that there were separate machines for glass and plastics (of course ours were jumbled together). Wine bottles were also prohibited (that cut our recyclables in half). Finally, after another 20 minutes, we had our time in the sun. First the cans and then the plastic bottles (but not the ones we had crushed – the conveyor belt didn’t accept them). With about 20 cans to go, the machine inexplicably rejected us. I told the kids to get a refund from Woolies, as my desire to donate was overruled. The kids returned with a handful of coins. They looked dejected. They wanted Maccas. We bought two drinks (they wanted ice-cream, but the machine was broken). We received them in non-recyclable containers. I started singing ‘isn’t it ironic’ and the excursion was over. Hey, Mrs CK, don’t listen to your husband. Do what you think is best. Carpe diem, Jasminda.

q Fresh faced Year 7 students on the steps of the hall at Hunter River High School. THERE was plenty of excitement and maybe just a few nerves this week, as Year 7 students began their secondary education at Hunter River High School (HRHS) on Wednesday, 31 January. Years 7, 11 and 12 students at HRHS started the day earlier than the rest of the School, giving the youngsters a chance to adapt to their new environment
and a new timetable that involves moving from class
to class. The 2018 - Year 7 Year

a substance that contains silver, so once you are done with your X-rays, that silver is fully recoverable and valuable to recyclers who extract the silver from the films. X-rays were first discovered by a German physicist named Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895. Within months of his discovery, doctors were using basic X-ray machines to look at broken bones in hospitals and on battlefields. Today X-ray machines are also used in airports to inspect passengers and their luggage for dangerous items, and to examine machinery for flaws. X-rays are not the only medical images that have silver, with MRIs, CTs and mammograms also containing the valuable precious metal. Modern X-ray machines, especially those used by dentists, can transfer images to computers rather than film.
MOST homes have a pile of awkwardly sized envelopes stashed somewhere, housing old X-rays from injuries and tests over the years. It is not a widely known fact that you can recycle your old X-rays and declutter them from your home. A customer service representative from Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “Port Stephens Council has drop off and collection points for old X-rays at our Council building in Raymond Terrace, and at the Salamander Waste Recycle Centre.” “We encourage residents to utilise this option to dispose of their X-rays that are no longer needed.” It is that simple and easy to make sure these items don’t get sent to landfill. Nyalla said she was initially nervous about starting but was very excited once she got to HRHS. “I couldn’t wait to start all the new and different lessons that I didn’t do at Tanilba Bay PS.” “I was just so excited to jump right into my first class,” said Angel. “I am looking forward to having my first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) lesson,” described Eleanor. “I was having mixed feelings before I started, but after day 1, I feel more confident and I am hoping that 2018 will be an amazing year for me and everyone else in Year 7,” Madeline said. “Starting Year 7 is great! I can’t wait to have my first Maths lesson”, said Kallie.

HRHS also invited Year 10 peer support leaders to come in a day early, to help guide the Year 7 students through their first day of High School. “I guess I know what it felt like to be nervous starting high school, because I was pretty nervous.” “I guess I just wanted to be someone they could come to for help and to be there to support them a bit,” described Year 10 student, Hayley Martin. The one and only Robbie Urquhart will be centre stage, playing all of the classic songs you love from years gone by. And yes, Robbie is always more than happy to play requests from the audience.
Robbie has been belting out the hits for more than 20 years, either as a solo act, or fronting rockabilly band ‘The Rattlesnakes’, rock n roll band ‘Robbie and the Rockers’ or blues band ‘The Blues

Port Performers Star in Little Women FREE TICKETS TO BE WON! By Marian SAMPSON
THE classic story of Little Women is coming to the Young Peoples Theatre (YPT) in Newcastle as a Musical, which will feature three Port Stephens performers. Based on Louisa May Alcott’s life, Little Women follows the adventures of sisters, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March. Jo weaves the story of herself and her sisters and their experience growing up in Civil War America. This production of Little Women has two casts, May and Alcott. Director Aaron Taylor has been part of previous productions of this show told News Of The Area, “This show
comes to mean more to me each time I am involved with a production. “To have so many people involved with this production which were part of the team last time I directed the show, has emphasized the vitality of memory and that it is upheld, while at the same time, embracing the freshness offered by the young talent that has lifted the show to a new level and has uncovered layers that I hadn’t ever before considered,” he said. Jasmine Phipps of Corlette plays Beth Marsh in the May cast, in 2017, Jasmine appeared as Sally Brown in YPT’s productions ‘You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown’ and featured as Cinderella in GTK Cinderella.
Off to high school By Rachael VAUGHAN THE first day of Year 7, just as it was for the first day of Kindergarten all those years ago, brings with it a lot of nerves and trepidation. And that’s just the parents. For students heading into High School for the first time, the feeling is a
mixture of being scared and excited at the same time. For many, they are heading into a much larger School than they are used to. Then there is the structure of the school day, getting from classroom to classroom when the bell rings instead of staying in the one place all day. Socially there are huge changes as well with many
She attends Hunter School of Performing Arts and is a soloist with the HSPA School Band. Wesley McGrath of Williamtown appeared as the Prince in Cinderella and now plays Laurie in the Alcott cast. The third local member of the Little Women cast is Harold Phipps of Salt Ash who has completed a Diploma of Musical Theatre. Harold has been in shows such as Macbeth (2014, YPT) in which he was nominated for a CONDA, Equus (2015, Stooged Theatre) and The 25th Annual Putnam Country Spelling Bee (2016, YPT) and The History Boys (2016, YPT), Crucible (2017, YPT), You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown (2017, YPT) students having to make new friends who have come from other Schools. It’s a lot for a young mind to deal with, but is so often the case, the children find a way to not only deal with all of the change, they embrace it. “To the families of our new Year 7 students, please don’t worry,” Lue Fagan, Irrawang High School’s Community Liaison Officer, told News of the Area. “Your children have
and Les Miserables (2017, Metropolitan Players). Harold’s involvement in YPT started as a student and he is now tutoring classes there, passing on his knowledge and passion for theatre to others. Performances are being held until 24 February on Saturdays and Sundays with selected Friday performances also being offered. YPT is pleased to offer readers of News of the Bay a chance to win a double pass to any performance other than Opening Night or High Tea. To enter, email marian@ newsofthearea.com.au by 10 February and tell me who your favourite Little Women character is and why in 25 words or less. settled in well, they’re happy and they have enjoyed their first classes.” “Many have already made friends from other Schools, which is great to see, so things are moving ahead very well.” The 2018 intake has been the biggest for Irrawang High School for many years, therefore the new School

year is a challenge for more than just the Year 7 students. Luckily, there was help on hand. “We need to send a big Thank You to Year 10 students Nicola, Delaya, Zahli and Kasey who happily came to school a day early to help guide and assist the Year 7 students,” said Lue Fagan. “However, the School
would also like to send an even bigger thank you to all of the parents for the obvious preparation they have done to help their children make the transition to High School.” “If the first day was any indication, it is going to be a great year.”

In essence, the state government will provide a $100 voucher to parents/ guardians of school enrolled children that can be used to help pay for registration or membership fees for structured activities of at least eight weeks’ in duration. Every child aged between 4.5 and 18 that is enrolled in school, home school or TAFE is eligible for their own $100 voucher. The ‘Active Kids’ vouchers are only redeemable through approved sport, fitness and physical activity providers, so make sure your provider is registered and that the use of your voucher is valid before signing up. Medowie Netball Club President Cheryl Smith told News Of The Area, “Medowie Netball is a great club, playing a fun sport that is all ages inclusive.”
