Big School Kids By Rachael VAUGHAN SHINY shoes, fresh uniforms, eager faces and a combination of tears and smiles. A familiar site around primary schools from the Bay to Medowie and Tilligerry, and through to Raymond Terrace and into Seaham as hundreds of baby-faced Port Stephens children headed off to ‘big school’, beginning an exciting new chapter in their lives. Medowie Public School Kindergarten parent Manda Green told News Of The Area, “Our daughter Eleanor has had a great start to kindergarten and we couldn’t be happier.” “There were no tears from anyone, which was great.” Irrawang Public School Kindergarten parent Sharon Castles said her son Thomas, “Loved getting up and getting ready for school
each day, he’s made a new friend already and is really enjoying it despite a few tears on the first day.” Jasmin Charles, who sent her son to Bobs Farm Public School last week, told News Of The Area, “It is such a great little school, I can’t even stress how amazing it has been.” Jewell Drury, longtime St Philips Christian College parent, told News Of The Area, “Destiny loves kindergarten and wears a big smile on her face everyday.” “She is number eight of my children to attend St Philips and we couldn’t be happier.” “Destiny is very shy and softly spoken so the small nurturing environment and small classes have really helped with her transition to big school,” she said. An enjoyable first year at Kinder is so important during

something only a few of us get to enjoy. However, three students from Irrawang High School will be attempting just that on Saturday 17 February. However, this isn’t just any ordinary walk, nor are these just ordinary students.
Tim and Mitch Low are excited for the challenge
If anything, they are extraordinary. Tim, Mitch and Maddy, who all call Medowie home, will be making the trek along with their families as part of the Krazy Kosci Klimb. The Krazy Kosci Klimb is a challenge event for young people over the age of twelve with cerebral palsy or another disability. The Krazy Kosci Klimb is also a fundraising event with proceeds going to the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. The local community have definitely pitched in with a huge show of support for Tim, Mitch and Maddy at a recent fundraising night. “We raised just under $3,000 last week at the ‘Bull n Bush’ Hotel.” Maddy’s mother Kristyne Petith told News Of The Area. “We received wonderful donations from businesses and the support of people that attended on the night
was outstanding.” So far, the trio have raised over $9000 but would love to crack the $10,000 mark. The Krazy Kosci Klimb begun in February 2014 and has raised almost $1million for the Accessible Gym and Sports Program at Cerebral Palsy Alliance. The Cerebral Palsy Alliance provides familycentred therapies, life skills programs, equipment and support for people and their families living with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. However, as important as fundraising for a service as important as the Cerebral Palsy Alliance is, the benefits from participating in such events can bring for the individuals involved are immeasurable. If you would like to help Tim, Mitch and Maddy, you can donate at krazykosciklimb. com.au/events.
someone to blame, this is just simply a side of Mother Nature that we are not used to. The lack of rainfall has given the blue-green algae conducive conditions for
growth and therefore rainfall is the only sure way of eradicating the bloom. “Unfortunately, the algae is naturally occurring and pretty difficult to manage,” West Ward Councillor Giacomo Arnott told News Of The Area. “I’ve been in constant contact with Council’s environmental team who assure me that management plans are being put in place.” Blue-green algae can

THE blue-green algae outbreak at Raymond Terrace’s Newline Road Wetland and Ross Walbridge Reserve has had a devastating
effect on the local wildlife, with many species of waterfowl succumbing to effects caused by the bluegreen algae bloom. Unfortunately, whilst looking for something or

cause severe stomach upsets, nausea and skin irritation in both people and animals. Animals especially can become very sick as a result of drinking contaminated water. Therefore, Port Stephens council is urging all residents to be vigilant. Signposts have been erected around the contaminated sites warning people to ensure they keep their children and pets away from the water. “I encourage all to follow the signposted warnings and act sensibly,” Councillor Arnott said.

“This is a sad event but it will pass with time and with rain.” Until the rain comes however, the affected area will continue to be hazardous, which means more wildlife will succumb to effects caused by the algae. According to Councillor Arnott, Port Stephens Council has been to the site to assess the situation and will continue to do so until the pond is back to its former glory. “Council is cleaning up the area when needed and I’ve already ensured this has happened once,” Councillor Arnott said. Once the wetlands are healthy again, it is important to remember a couple of simple rules that will help the native ducks and wildlife get back on their feet. Despite public opinion, bread is a terrible food to feed them. Instead, it is recommended that we use chopped lettuce, watermelon, tomato or grated carrot. The ducks will be around for a lot longer if you do.

Shop-a-docket Comp for Schools - Win $1000 KEEP your receipts and check your shop-a-dockets, because they can now be quite valuable. R & R Property has begun a competition to get students at a wide selection of schools to collect their dockets displaying the R & R ad, and hand them into the office. The participating schools so far are; Medowie Christian School, Raymond Terrace Public School, Grahamstown Primary School, Mount Kanwary Primary, Karuah Primary, Booral Primary Stroud Primary and Stroud Road Primary Principal of R & R Property, Denise Haynes told News Of The Area, “We chose to help the schools because we know that they are always struggling financially and sometimes that can fall back onto the parents.” “The Collect and Win campaign is just another way for us to give support to the community.” Participating schools are in the running to win $1000 from R & R Property. They can spend this on educational and sporting
equipment of their choice. Denise said, “I’ve discussed it with the schools & I know from doing so that they already have goals to purchase items this year.” “They’ve indicated that the money would be a huge help for them to achieve those targets.” R & R Property realise that families are generally time poor, so they want to make the competition as quick and easy as possible. Denise said, “After some serious consideration, we came up with the fact that everybody has to grocery shop at some point and we’d make it that all that the families will have to do is to collect our R & R Property.
advertisements on the back of their shopping dockets.” “We advertise on the reverse of the Woollies & Big W receipts, so when you go shopping at Woolworths Medowie and Raymond Terrace or Big W Raymond Terrace, always check the back.” The great thing is that Parents, Grandparents and Friends can help out with the collecting, so recruit them all. The first participating school to collect 200 of our advertisements and to notify us will be the winners of the $1000. You can check if your school is participating on www. collectandwin.com.au
q Charlotte, Harry, William and Audrey Atkins get ready to start collecting.
Mr JU, It is easy to get distracted. Back in the day when we worked from home and used word processors, our distractions were perhaps clouds flitting across the sky, or a magpie warbling, or the postie delivering our mail. Now, the Internet has changed things. Say, during your morning tea break, you decide to check what is going on in your friends’ lives. You scroll through and someone likes a memory of your kids and they send you a message about the time you dined together in Austria. You ‘like’ this message, but that seems dismissive, so you write a couple of sentences about the amazing schnitzels. You add an emoji, then another, and another. They respond with another message. You give them the ‘thumbs up’ emoji which means, the conversation is over. They give you a ‘thumbs up’ emoji and you realise you should send them a link about Internet protocol. You are about to log off, when you spot a video of a guy using a device called a Beard Bro, and even though you don’t have a beard or a bro, you decide to watch it. Now your tea is cold. Next your eyes swivel to an adorable video of a panda eating a carrot. You watch it twice. It’s very cute. You think about how much you’d like to own a panda. Knowing that is impossible, you think about how much you’d like to eat a carrot. You head to the fridge. Just above the carrots is half a Tiramisu. You take a spoonful. Then another. You take the whole packet out of the fridge and eat straight from the container (you can do that when you don’t have work colleagues). Returning to the Internet, you look up diets for people who eat Tiramisu when they should be eating carrots. Instead you come across a video of a man trying to teach his Labrador pup how to walk down stairs. You think about how much you’d like a Labrador. You feel bad about having these thoughts when your faithful cattle dog is at your feet. You take him for a walk. Mr JU, I think you should work in the library. Or disconnect your Internet. Or get a job as a teacher or a nurse or a paramedic. They don’t have time for this nonsense. Carpe diem, Jasminda

WHILE the escape of some 20,000 kingfish from a commercial farm has been a bonanza for professional and recreational fishers alike, it’s a different story when it comes to prawns. Friction of barnacles during recent monster swells could very well have

have been banned. These traps used to be suspended beneath the surface and were covered with shade-cloth which attracted the fish. Currently, the fish are swarming around the reefs and headlands and are being caught by spearfishers, professionals and amateurs in record numbers. An ‘exclusion zone’ has been proclaimed around the farm and authorities are worried that the plague of kingfish could lay waste to the marine parks as they hoover up anything that moves. Meanwhile, our prawners have never seen it so bad with very little action in the Hunter River. Long time professional Robert Hamilton puts it this way, “We need a major rain event to make them run. “Without this it’s just not worthwhile going out.” “I had a trial shot recently and returned with hardly enough prawns for bait for my son to go fishing with,” Mr Hamilton told News Of The Area.

Seaham Park funding for roads upgrade PARLIAMENTARY Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC today joined Pre McGee of the Seaham Park & Wetlands Committee and Adam Elbourne of Elbourne Plant Hire to inspect recently completed road upgrades to Seaham Park in Seaham. The Seaham Park & Wetlands Committee supporters raised $11,500 that was supplemented with a $3,000 grant and $7,000 in materials and labor from Port Stephens Council. Elbourne Plant Hire, a local contractor donated the plant equipment and operators and a local rock quarry, Boral East Seaham donated the road base. Mr MacDonald said this was an example of great
community collaboration and generosity that reduced the cost of the project by approximately $25,000. “The interior roads to Seaham Park have been damaged by heavy vehicles, flooding and local run off and needed upgraded drainage and tar sealing,” Mr MacDonald said. “I congratulate the Seaham Park and Wetlands Committee for their sustained commitment to the Park including their advocacy requesting assistance from the NSW Government. The NSW Premier Hon Gladys Berejiklian recognised the value of this important community asset and was pleased to approve a grant of
$5000.” “The volunteers on the Committee have worked hard over the last few years to deliver one of the best parks in Port Stephens. They worked with Boral Quarry, Elbourne Earth Moving and Port Stephens Council to deliver a new Park entry and car parking area,” Port Stephens Councillor Ken Jordan said. Ms McGee was grateful for the community and government support. “Local community and government effort at both the local and state level achieved this project. Without such support a small community group could not achieve such outcomes,” Ms McGee said.

By Rachael VAUGHAN THE recent death of a fourteen year old girl known as ‘Dolly’, who took her own life after years of bullying, has thrust the issue of bullying and mental health amongst young people once again into the spotlight, and in the spotlight is where it should remain. In 2016, suicide was the leading cause of death of children between five and seventeen, In Indigenous communities, the rates are also alarming, and not widely publicised. As a community, and as a nation, we must take action, Laura Francke, Principal Psychologist at Port Stephens Clinical Psychology Services, told News Of The Area, “Children who experience bullying experience significant disadvantages and poorer outcomes across a wide range of areas.” “While most children experience some form of low level teasing during their school years, when this is pervasive it impacts on academic and social wellbeing and in its more severe form
can lead to serious mental health implications including anxiety, depression, eating disorders, school refusal and in some cases suicidality.” Whilst we often hear the comments ‘we didn’t see this coming’ when a young person takes their life, Laura explains there are some signs parents and caregivers can keep an eye out for. “Children generally either internalise or external use their inner turmoil.” “Internalising children may become withdrawn, anxious or sadder than usual and may experience somatic complaints such as stomach and headaches.” “Children who externalise may show increased aggression, problems regulating their behaviour or targeting of peers or siblings who are ‘weaker’ than them.” With this modern technological age, social media and the increase of young people having access to technological devices means that children who are experiencing bullying literally can often find no reprieve, with the online world giving bullies a sense of invincibility and false bravado.
Lauren said, “In addition, the severity of bullying appears to have increased as children no longer need to face the response of their victim or accountability to their peers as they are in a private space with no immediate consequence to their actions.” There are some important things that parents can do to try and protect young people in these situations. “Children need to develop a capacity to manage bullying with strength and resilience, by teaching them to disengage immediately from anyone behaving aggressively to them - a crucial life skill,” says Laura. “Remembering as parents our words create their inner voice, we need to instill confidence in our children and a directly teach them to be assertive to anyone treating them disrespectfully.” “Children do not have the developmental capacity to self regulate when using social media and as parents it is our responsibility to keep their world as safe as possible as they learn these skills,” Laura added. “Setting clear rules about

the grants. “Every time someone buys one of these speciallymarked products we get a portion back in our chest which we donate to the community,” she said. The Lions Club will be using the donation for equipment for the Mountain Park and the Show Society will utilise the grant to make improvements to facilities at the showground. Cricket Club Team Manager Erin Matheson said their share of funding will be used to purchase a gazebo to help protect the young players from the sun.
The recipients of the funding grants were selected by the store, ensuring the money raised locally stays within the community. “We are pleased to be able to assist so many worthy community groups,” Jenny said. “The amount of money raised varies each year, but we always feel good about giving back to the community.” Each the organisations were presented with cheques last week and thanked the Bulahdelah IGA for their generosity.
A Chest of Funds
THREE community groups received a funding injection last month thanks to a donation from Bulahdelah IGA. The Bulahdelah Lions Club, Show Society and Junior Cricket Club each received a share of more than $1,000 raised through the Community Chest program. Store Manager Jenny Glynn said customers play a key role in the program, with funds from speciallymarked ‘Community Chest’ products pooled to provide

Kylie Jane at the Tavern By Rachael VAUGHAN
KICKING back and relaxing on a Sunday afternoon at the hidden gem ‘Anna Bay Tavern’ sounds pretty good at the best of times.
But when you add the soulful sounds of renowned local artist Kylie Jane, your afternoon couldn’t get much better. Kylie first came to prominence on the hit
Channel 9 show ‘The Voice’ back in 2016. During the blind audition stage, Kylie proved that she knows how to silence a crowd, as well as get the big names in the judges chairs to

take notice, with her unique talent. Since then, Kylie has gone on to perform countless shows at venues all over the Port Stephens region, impressing thousands with her ability to perform any song and make it her own.
Kylie has also taken to the studio to record a new album “Black Swan” which is available at all of her shows as well as online. Some call her pop, some call her country, others hear soul and blues. “I draw inspiration from country and soul which I have added to the pop undertones of the record,” Kylie Jane told
News Of The Area. “So, my sound really is a mixture of them all and hopefully it’s a sound that people will want to hear more of.” So, if you enjoy quality music in a relaxed setting, the scene is set for you this Sunday 18 February at the Anna Bay Tavern from 3pm.

National Dance Champ We have a National Dance Champion, and she is only twelve years old.
By Rachael VAUGHAN
WE have a National Dance Champion, and she is only twelve years old. Kyara Darcy, who has been dancing with ‘Dance ‘n Dazzle’ since she was two years old, competed in January on the Gold Coast at the SHOWCASE National Dance Championships at the Star, Gold Coast. It was her first time competing at a National level and the first time a student from her studio has competed at this level also. Kyara had to qualify for Nationals back in August at the Regionals held at Lake Macquarie. She competed in five various tap dances styles and was awarded three placings. Kyara is now the National Fast Tap Champion, with a 1st Place in the Pre-Teen division. She also was awarded 2nd place in the Waltz Tap, and 3rd Place in the Slow Tap. The competition had thousands of students competing from Australia and New Zealand and is the Most professionally run competition in Australia. Just to be able to dance at Nationals is an honour but to actually win a National title is a dream come true for Kyara who practices and trains five days per week. Kyara has loved dancing for as long as she can remember, and she told News Of The Area, “What I love about dancing is using my emotions to tell the q
story and having fun with the moment and feeling like nobody can stop me.” Kyara enjoyed her time at the National Championships, and the opportunity for growth and experience it afforded her. She said, “There were so many people from all over the world from judges to students, it was an honour to be with all the other amazing dancers.” “The opportunities were
fantastic.” When asked about the moment she was announced as the National champion, Kyara told News Of The Area, “It was really a surprise to find out I won such an amazing title, winning an Australian title.” Kyara would one day like to become a famous choreographer, or perhaps one day dance on a cruise ship or become a dance teacher like her mother.

IT is amazing how an emergency situation brings out the best in people. This was certainly the case during the recent Masonite Road Fire emergency which was located just south of the communities of Raymond Terrace, Campvale and Medowie. When it was decided that the fire command centre was to be placed at the Lakeside Playing Fields, the Raymond Terrace ‘Roosters’ Rugby League Club jumped to action. The club, along with lots of volunteers, answered the call and opened their
facilities. They cooked dinner on their barbecues, handed out drinks and offered any assistance that the many firefighters required as they sought respite from the, at times, out of control inferno. Along with help from the Raymond Terrace Lions Club and a local mission group, over one hundred firefighters and support crew were kept fed and hydrated during the many hours required to keep the flames at bay. The local community also pitched in with donations of water, food with even the odd treat thrown in to keep morale at a high level. With the barbecue

cooking up a storm and the dressing sheds offering a place for tired crews to recover away from the elements, the Lakeside Playing Fields offered the many brigades and rural fire volunteers a true sanctuary from the blaze. Jamie Douglas from Raymond Terrace Rugby League Club told News Of The Area, “We’re a family friendly club, and we are always on the lookout for ways we can help the community.” “This was an emergency situation and we did what we thought was the right thing to do.” “The firies do an amazing job, so it was a no brainer for us, and we’re just happy everything worked out in the end,” he said.

Rugby Lads Trivia FROM Page 16 They have been working hard through the holidays and fundraising to earn their tour expenses. The Karuah RSL have been a major sponsor for the boys, and are continuing their support by hosting a Fundraising Trivia Night on Saturday 17 of February at 6.30pm. Many businesses from the local area have generously donated prizes for the night, including a $400 Sports Camera from Marlin Marine and Tackle, and a $350 voucher for Altitude Travel. The ARU and NSW Rugby have also donated signed Wallabies and Waratahs

jerseys, which will be auctioned on the night. There are also a host of other prizes to be won on the night. A ticket to the event will set you back $10 for adults and $5 for under 15s. Tables can be booked through the Karuah RSL on 4997 5297 or by
contacting Jude Woodfield on 0404464465 or Rae Eade on 0425245817. Jude Woodfield told News Of The Area, “Chris and Jordan have been overwhelmed by the support they have received and would like to thank everyone who has donated or offered work opportunities for the boys to earn their fare.” “They look forward to seeing everyone there!”
