NETNEWS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

Please remember that all ALTA matches are unofficiated. As such, all participants are expected to work together to ensure an enjoyable experience. We have all encountered unpleasant opponents, and it is important to recognize and take the opportunity to diffuse conflict before it escalates. Although we have little control over an opponents’ actions, we can control how we respond. Many times, it comes down to a choice — do we escalate or mitigate the situation? For example, what if your opponent makes a bad call? How do you respond? Do you accuse him/ her of being blind and cheating? Do you talk about it with your partner loudly enough for your opponents to hear? Do you call the next ball out in retaliation? Or do you just give them the benefit of the doubt and move on? I think we can all agree that the first three responses have the potential to escalate into conflict, while the last one will serve to mitigate any unpleasant issues. We hope that all teams will enjoy their matches this season, regardless of where they finish. ALTA leagues are recreational leagues. While competition is an important part, fair play and good sportsmanship make the matches enjoyable and the wins more meaningful. Good luck to everyone this fall season. ummers in Atlanta are always hot, and this year was no exception. However, our teams in the Mixed Doubles, Senior, and Run ‘n Roll Leagues powered through the heat, rain delays, and vacation scheduling challenges to finish the season. As a result, we have 53 new City Champions. Congratulations to all of you! Our team registration numbers for this fall are the highest we’ve seen in four years, and we are thrilled to see that more teams are participating in our leagues. Now that the fall season is about to begin, we can hope for cooler temperatures, but we will likely still be dealing with similar issues because of rain and vacation schedules. Many of the school systems in our area now have fall breaks, which can be a challenge for our members with children in school. As you know, it is permissible to play matches early if both teams agree. I encourage captains to check with their teammates early in the season regarding availability, so you aren’t scrambling to field a lineup at the last minute. While I know there are times when such requests can’t be accommodated, please give your opponent the courtesy of thorough consideration. The same goes for rescheduling rained out matches. Please be as cooperative as possible when this occurs. The goal is for matches to be played and won or lost on the court. Keep in mind, our captains have the first opportunity to set a positive tone for the match with the initial contact.

The Atlanta Senior Invitational Tournament Celebrates 30th Anniversary Event The 2021 Atlanta Senior Invitational (ASI) held in May was one of the first tournaments of the year, nationally, for most players after the entire 2020 season was wiped out by the pandemic. Cherokee Town and Country Club, along with co-hosts, Ansley Golf Club, Bitsy Grant Tennis Center, and Capital City Club, were honored to host this 30th anniversary event sponsored by Richard Bowers & Company. Beth Clay, ASI tournament director, stated that due to the pandemic, there were many hurdles this year. She wishes to thank the host facilities, sponsors, members, staff, volunteers, players, and USTA-GA who graciously gave their support to the tournament. A record 304 players (from age 30 to 85) competed in the tournament. Players from 29 states, Puerto Rico, Chile, and the District of Columbia participated this year. The ASI started in 1991 to showcase Atlanta’s best senior players in competition against the best players across the nation. It has become the premier senior invitational tennis tournament in the United States and is a tradition for many of

the top players. The ASI tournament, along with ALTA, has led to the recognition of Atlanta as a tennis mecca. No other tournament in the country showcases as many of the nation’s top senior players in as many age divisions as the ASI. Top touring pros and more than 50 national champions participate in 11 different age groups in singles, doubles, and the father-son open. ASI has become an ITF Grade 1 and USTA Super Category II Event, with $25,000 in prize money. This year’s field included national champions, Brian Cheney (88 senior men’s national titles), Armistead Neely (29), Philip Landauer (39), Andy Stoner (23), Fred Robinson (23), Joe Bachmann (15), Fred Drilling (13), Hugh Thomson (11), Eoin Collins (9), Peter Markes (7), and former world No. 1 doubles player, Don Johnson.

Baby Got Backhand It’s not your run-of-the-mill ladies’ team name, but it was enough to win over Mizuno. “Baby got backhand” was the name selected by Stephanie Halpern and her spring Sandy Springs Sunday Women’s League A1 team who made it all the way to City Finals. They, along with about 15 other women’s playoff teams, entered the ALTA contest by submitting the best team name. Mizuno outfitted the entire winning team with 2021 Wave Exceed Tour 4 AC shoes. Halpern’s team made the name choice because their line 1 player is Carolyn Petrosian, and she had her first child, William James, during the spring ALTA season, making her the first and only mom on the team. We are sure baby William will be their team mascot for years to come. Look for another contest possibly for the 2022 winter Mixed Doubles playoff teams, so don’t worry fellas. Mizuno will outfit you, too, along with your mixed doubles partner. More details to come on the ALTA website and in the next issue of Net News.

The Fall Classic is Back! It’s that time of year again. Fall is in the air, and one of the great tennis events in Atlanta is back. More than 100 athletes will be participating in the 16th Annual Special Pops Tennis Fall Classic (SPT) at Life Time Athletic and Tennis in Peachtree Corners. SPT Executive Director Jim Hamm says there are 400 volunteer opportunities available, so mark your calendar for September 24-26 and get on the volunteer list. Hamm says the ALTA Foundation plays a key role in making this event a big success. “We are blessed to be living in a community where tennis is now ingrained into the culture of our communities,” he said. “This gives our SPT athletes a chance to learn a lifetime sport, build healthy relationships, and feel included in the community where they live. It is life-changing!” This annual event made several modifications in 2020 to comply with the safety protocol in place at that time. While many of

the restrictions have been relaxed, it is still apparent that some modifications will be necessary. But Hamm adds there has been no restriction placed on how much fun you can have by playing or volunteering at this event. Online registration is open. Visit their website at specialpopstennis.org to learn more about how to get involved. Special Pops Tennis was founded in 2005 and offers its programs at 18 metro Atlanta locations.

The pictures tell the story. Complete with homemade scones, strawberries and cream, traditional English cakes, champagne, and a full Wimbledon-themed spread, players from Chastain Park decided to celebrate the final week of their Mixed Doubles League match in style. “We have enough Pimms to fill Lake Lanier,” said Christopher Jones, who along with his “mum,” Clare Jones, play on different Chastain Mixed Doubles teams and came up with the Wimbledon idea. The Jones family moved here from England in the late 1990’s and have been big ALTA supporters and members ever since. It was a day meant for Wimbledon fun when they realized they were both at Chastain for the last match of the season. Both teams took it all in, as they came dressed in white and ready to play. Naturally, the skies were a bit iffy that day, as Christopher noted, “the weather looks like it will hold out, but it wouldn’t be Wimbledon without the threat of rain.” The day went off as planned, and just like a perfect cup of tea, as the Brits would say, it turned out to be a perfect end to the season. Cheerio!

USTA Executive Director John Callen to Retire John Callen, currently the longest serving USTA section executive director, announced his retirement, effective Jan. 31, 2022. In 1989, Callen was named USTA Southern executive director and now also serves as its COO. Callen is a member of four Halls of Fame: the Southern Tennis Hall of Fame (inducted in 2013), the Alabama Tennis Foundation Hall of Fame (2000), and the Georgia Tennis Foundation Hall of Fame (2004). He is also an honorary member of the Georgia Professional Tennis Association and member of their Hall of Fame. “Announcing the retirement plans of our beloved and respected executive director of 33 years is not done without a lot of mixed emotions,” said USTA Southern President & CEO Randy Jackson. “It’s difficult to describe the significance of a John Callen to an organization like ours. John’s experience, intelligence, personality, and character have made him a most respected leader in the tennis world.” Over the span of more than a half centur y, Ca l len’s contributions to Southern tennis run the gamut of the tennis world. Starting as a noted junior and college player, he also has been a standout coach, volunteer and, ultimately, a leading tennis executive. Ca llen grew up in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was Student Body

President, Athletic Club President, a member of the National Honor Society, and a varsity tennis player who went undefeated in high school dual matches. He went on to play at the collegiate level at Georgia Tech from 1970-1974, where he served as co-captain and played No. 1 to No. 4 singles and No. 1 to No. 2 doubles over his four-year career. In 1974, he began a 15-year tennis pro career as Head Tennis Professional at Big Canoe, director of tennis at the Indian Hills Country Club, and athletic director at Standard Club. Callen continued to hone his skills as a player, winning numerous Southern tennis titles and reaching the No. 1 ranking in the section for multiple years across many age groups. Callen, who resides in Johns Creek, has been dedicated to volunteerism in the Southern Section. He was a founder of the Georgia Tennis Hall of Fame, founding member of the Georgia Tennis Patrons Foundation and founding member of the ALTA Foundation. He served as Georgia Tennis Association President from 19821983. He was also elected to ALTA’s Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors of the Georgia Professional Tennis Association. Callen coached winning Georgia Junior Davis Cup teams. He served as USTA Southern Vice President along with being a member of numerous USTA committees.

It was quite the special event for kids of all ages and tennis supporters throughout Atlanta. Former ALTA player and past USTA Chairman and President, Katrina Adams, held a unique fundraiser in August to benefit the Coan Tennis Association. The special event, “An Evening with Katrina Adams,” was held at Sugar Creek Golf and Tennis Center, which is one of the locations at which Adams played ALTA about 20 years ago. Atlanta area youth participated in a junior tennis clinic, Adams held a book signing, and everyone seemed to enjoy a great evening. Adams is one of the most influential and well-respected leaders in the tennis world. She served an unprecedented two consecutive terms for USTA. She also was the first African American, first former professional tennis player, and youngest person ever to serve as USTA President. She also was an accomplished professional player having competed for 12 years on the WTA Tour. 18

Made You Love Tennis Foundation Announces New Partnership The Made You Love Tennis Foundation (MYLTF) has announced a new partnership with the Adopta-Cop Partner Initiative, which is designed to assign active law enforcement officers to students in a tennis program where they will serve as mentors as well as doubles partners in weekly tennis league play. “We could not be more excited about what is about to take off,” MYLTF founder and Chairman Eric Jackson said of the partnership, which will start at B.E.S.T. Academy and Coretta Scott King Young Women's Leadership Academy. Both schools are a part of Atlanta Public Schools. An Atlanta native, Jackson reached as high as the No. 9 player in the country as a junior star in the 1990s. After his successful run of junior tennis, he was a stalwart at North Carolina State, where he played four years of collegiate tennis before graduating. Jackson says the new initiative will benefit both police officers

as well as underserved communities in Atlanta, which he says are full of potential that has not been given the chance to shine. “I know the talent in our city athletically, academically, and in the arts,” Jackson said. “And this program will be one step in unlocking the full potential of the youth of Atlanta. This initiative is necessary as we work to establish trust, safety, and support back into Atlanta communities.” Each week, students and officers will have a chance to participate in what Jackson says are “competitive but friendly” matches and win prizes. The Made You Love Tennis Foundation was created as a curriculum-based tennis education program with community outreach for underserved children in our communities. The foundation is committed to using tennis as a tool to service underserved youth while also promoting academic excellence, which provides a gateway to open doors and creates limitless opportunities for our youth’s future.

PGA Tour Superstore Hosts Clinic

Hosted by PGA TOUR Superstore in partnership with South Atlanta Community Tennis Association, the 2021 Truist Atlanta Open Presented by Fiserv brought together 19 Excellence Teams participants for a VIP tennis clinic on tournament courts. South Atlanta Community Tennis Association is a non-profit tennis and education organization created to help underserved youth achieve tennis and academic success. Excellence Teams participants are National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) youth chosen based on their elite level of tennis ability, educational outcomes, and commitment to the pathway to become student-athletes at the collegiate and professional levels. The session boasted celebrity appearances from Luke Jensen (American professional tennis player and Grand Slam doubles champion), Andreas Seppi (Italian professional tennis player), and the Bryan Brothers—identical twin brothers Bob and Mike, American professional doubles tennis players and the most successful duo of all time. “We are proud to partner with organizations like South Atlanta Community Tennis Association,” said Siah Burton, Community Relations Manager, PGA TOUR Superstore. “In elevating our commitment to our Core Value of Give Back to Others, we recognize that creating these unparalleled experiences will help create lasting memories and exposure for young adults who may not otherwise have access to these opportunities.”

2021 RECAP ISNER WINS SIXTH ATLANTA TITLE, OPELKA/SINNER WIN FIRST DOUBLES TITLE A big thank you to ALTA members! We’d like to offer our appreciation to ALTA and its members for helping to make the 2021 Truist Atlanta Open presented by Fiserv a tremendous success. It was great seeing so many ALTA players throughout the week! I’m excited to talk about 2021 as this year’s event comes to a close, but also I’m anticipating big things to come as we start planning the 2022 edition of the Truist Atlanta Open. Our 2021 player field was the best ever and fans turned out in droves. That included our “Sunday Showdown,” featuring Kim Clijsters and Sloane Stephens. Once again we heard so many positive comments about bringing women’s stars to kick off a men’s event. I’d like to give a shout out to our venue, Atlantic Station, for offering such a great atmosphere for our matches and its onsite offerings for fans to enjoy. Fans were delighted to watch the journey of 19-year-old American Brandon Nakashima as he reached our finals. How exciting was it to watch John Isner increase his already historic number of Atlanta titles from five to six! It was great to see Reilly Opelka and young Italian star Jannik Sinner team up to win their inaugural ATP Tour doubles title.

We were proud to crown some of the ALTA Mixed Doubles champions on our tournament courts during the tournament. What a thrill for the players and the play was awesome! We hope you liked our improved stadium design and layout with more shade, air conditioning, misting stations and room to roam. Make sure you save the dates for 2022! That will be July 23 – July 31, 2022, at Atlantic Station. We couldn’t do what we do each year without partners like ALTA, Truist, Fiserv, NCR, CIGNA, UPS, and many others. Our partners make this event bigger and better each year. Thanks as always to ORTHO ATLANTA sports medicine specialists for helping keep our ATP players healthy and on the court! If you or any of your ALTA teammates have a health issue or question, let Ortho Atlanta help you get back on court ASAP. Thank you again, and good luck this fall in your leagues! — Eddie Gonzalez Truist Atlanta Open presented by Fiserv Tournament Director gonzalez@atlantaopentennis.com

New Book Offers Inspiration for Tennis Fanatics What makes “The Fein Points of Tennis” different from all other tennis instruction books? This collection of Paul Fein’s most incisive articles features topics seldom written about, such as playing in the wind, the half volley, match momentum, running speed, the subtleties of touch shots, and the arts of anticipation, lobbing, and wrong-footing. The games of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams, and other stars are dissected so you can learn — and copy — the secrets of their greatness. A new event name will be revealed at a later date. “The future of live tennis is a bright spot for us, building and planning for what the future will look like for the new Credit One Stadium. GRACE WILSON College Attending: California Institute of Technology Major: Bioengineering Graduated from: Forsyth Central High School Do you have a nickname? My older sister nicknamed me her twin since we get asked all the time if we are identical twins. We can unlock the face ID on each other’s phones, but I still don’t think we look anything alike. If you could pick a superpower, what would it be? I would choose telekinesis. I could move objects with my mind, and I could also move myself with my mind. That way, I would have the ability to fly as well. It’s a two-in-one superpower.

HENRY EDMEADES College Attending: University of Georgia Major: International Affairs Graduated from: Grady High School What was the best vacation you have ever had? When I was 15, I was fortunate enough to go on a trip with my family to Iceland. I loved the volcanic deserts, waterfalls, geysers, and mountains. I felt like I was on a different planet What was the first thing you said you wanted to be when you grew up? A magician.

Is there a Disney or Nickelodeon show you still love today? I still LOVE the animated show “Chowder.” This show is what made me want to own my own restaurant when I was younger.

Do you collect anything? I started collecting skateboard company stickers in eighth grade to put on a huge mirror I found on the street. It turned into a bit of an obsession, and I ended up covering every square inch of the mirror and still had tons of stickers to spare.

What is the best vacation you ever had? The best vacation I ever had was a trip I took with my family to Cancun, Mexico. The food was amazing, and I got to ride ATV’s for the first time.

If you could travel in time to any place, where would you go? I would travel to Hawaii in the 80’s and just be a beach bum, surfing every day because it seems like a nice, simple lifestyle.

What motivates you to work hard? One day, I would like to be a doctor, so I believe that working hard now will help me become the best doctor possible.

Do you live by any motto? If you can’t change it, don’t sweat it. I made up this motto to remind myself that if I make a mistake to not dwell on it and to just move forward.

Will and Bill Chocallo

The Brady Family

ALTA: Where Families Come to Play BY EMMY POWELL, NET NEWS EDITOR

Something quite magical occurs when you start down the road of learning the game of tennis, and it turns out to be a sport that creates great meaning for your entire family. This past spring, we came across some truly heart-warming stories of life coming full circle through ALTA.

The Chocallo Family

Bill Chocallo and his son, Will, have shared some great ALTA memories throughout the years. Will played on his first ALTA Junior League team in 2003 and would later go on to take the City Championship on a 10U C4 team in 2004, which was captained by his father. That same year, Bill also captured one of many ALTA City Championships, playing out of Indian Hills Country Club. Fast forward 17 years, and they both earned the big plate this past spring, playing as teammates and partners at Line 1 out of the Overlook @ Marietta Country Club. Will says finally being able to play with his dad has been quite the experience. “I’ve been in the cheering section watching him play ALTA matches since I was a wee lad,” he said. Will went on to say those early Saturday mornings helping Bill to warm up before his match was how his own tennis career began. “Everyone seemed to remember the name ‘Billy Chocallo’ and the legendary ‘Chocallo forehand’ from back in the day,” Will said, adding that he watched his father win title after title and wanted to be just like him. “I felt so proud the day we both won ALTA plates on the same day. I was finally just like Dad, continuing the Chocallo tennis legacy,” Will continued. That legacy goes way back, even to his playing days with the University of Georgia in the late 1980’s. Bill Chocallo was on the same team with many of the UGA national champions, such as Stephen Enochs, Philip Johnson, and Trey Carter. Will says he will never forget when his father told him that finally being able to play together is all he really ever wanted out of his tennis. “I didn’t really care about the wins or losses, only that I could play with my son,” Bill said.

The Brady Family

One ALTA family who also had quite the spring season is the Brady family from Fieldstone. It started the weekend of May 8 when Jackson Brady, who had a stellar season at Line 2 singles, helped his team take the 15U B1 City Championship. That following weekend, Jackson’s father, Dan Brady, had a nail biter of his own. He captains his Men’s B8 team, and it came down to him and his 40

partner, Bill Ziliak, at Line 5. They lost the first set, came back to win the second, and clinched the title in a third-set tiebreak. The following week was Micaela Brady’s (mom) turn. “We had to wait for the text to come through because Micaela did not want us to watch as she was a bit nervous,” Dan said. It was a total team effort to make it to the championship match following several incredible come-from-behind wins during the playoffs, frequently decided on the last line on the court. “Getting to City Finals was a big deal for us because we have been together as a team for at least 10 years and we had made it to playoffs, but finally making it to the finals was so exciting for us,” Micaela said. She added it was fun for the family to enjoy all the wins each weekend on the way to City Finals.

The Wood Family

Family fun is also the name of the game for Art Wood and his family who play out of Smoke Rise Country Club. Wood’s AA3 Men’s team took home the big plate, while his son, Trace, was battling it out for the 15U C4 City Championship at DeKalb Tennis Center (DTC). Wood said he hurried to DTC after his match, but Trace’s team had just won it. It was a good day to be part of the Wood family. “Funny how a plate can make your day, and two is even better,” Wood said. He says his wife, Karen, who has captained several teams and helped her daughter’s (Makenna) 10U team to a City Finals, captured a big plate herself for her Sunday Women’s team. “She is the motor behind all of these wins,” acknowledged the proud husband.

he 2021 summer Senior Leagues were a great success! We saw both the men’s and women’s leagues grow. The women added 900 players and 49 new teams, while the men added 700 players and 41 new teams. It’s such a thrill to see more Atlanta area folks out on the tennis courts! As with every summer in Georgia, rain created some chaos in the first weeks of the season, but teams worked together and were able to complete matches with few problems. Thank you to everyone for your flexibility and cooperation! Thank goodness 2020 is behind us, and we were able to hold City Finals at central locations! Harrison and Sandy Springs Tennis Centers were the sites of some great championship tennis and lively fellowship. Congratulations to all the 2021 City Champions!

ALTA Senior League tennis doesn’t end when summer fades, as winter Senior Mixed Doubles is right around the corner. Registration for the winter leagues starts on September 21 and continues until October 16. Match play begins January 8 and finishes up March 1. This fun league offers a slightly different format: one line of women’s doubles, one line of men’s doubles and two lines of mixed doubles. Participants must turn at least 45 in 2022, and teams only need 10 players (five men and five women) to form a roster. Matches are played at 10 a.m. on Saturdays, which is late enough to avoid the winter chill and early enough to still have time to enjoy other activities after an energizing tennis match! Join us on the courts in 2022!

hanks to everyone who came out and played in the Mixed Doubles League this summer. We had another great season of tennis! As the ALTA Rules Committee met over the past several months, we had strategic and thoughtful conversations about how to make all our leagues more inclusive, especially for teenagers who are top-level tournament players and who are looking for a higher level of competition. This fall, we are kicking off a pilot program to allow advanced junior players who are 16 and 17 years of age to play on an adult AA team. The pilot will be for the Sunday Women’s and Men’s Leagues and will also be available for the winter 2022 Mixed Doubles teams. Junior players need to go through an approval process, so here are the guidelines: • Junior players may be considered for this program if they are 16 years of age during the season. • Play is restricted to Men’s, Sunday Women’s, and Mixed Doubles Leagues only. • Qualified junior players may only be included on or added to AA rosters. If a junior player is added to an A-level roster, that team would be leveled at AA.

• Two qualified juniors will be allowed per AA team. • Each qualified junior player must play matches with an adult team member. • Once junior players participate in the adult league, they may not play in the ALTA Junior Leagues. Captains who want to participate in this program must: • Send an email to MensVP@altatennis.org for the Men’s League, SundayVP@altatennis.org for the Sunday Women’s League, or MixedVP@altatennis.org for the Mixed Doubles League and provide the player’s name, birthdate, ALTA number if they have one, and any other helpful information for consideration. Be sure to copy FirstVP@altatennis.org on the communication. • Once the junior player is approved, they will need an ALTA membership if he or she does not already have one from past ALTA league play. • The ALTA office staff will assist with the $30 adult membership payment which is required to play in the adult league. We are excited about this pilot program and hope you will cheer on these players with us as they join the adult leagues! SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021 NETNEWS

Good Sportsmanship

020 was by far one of the most challenging years that many of us have endured as it impacted so many aspects of our lives. The effects have been so far-reaching, and yet, we all had to find a way to adapt and get through a time we hope we will never encounter again. Many people turned to outdoor physical activity, and luckily, tennis remained one of the safest sports in which people could still participate. ALTA successfully survived and is once again thriving with leagues for all ages and levels. Along with that is a key component of ALTA: good sportsmanship. We love to hear from our members when they encounter extraordinary examples of good sportsmanship while either playing or organizing their matches. Please reach out to your coordinator or a league vice president if you wish to nominate an ALTA member for a good sportsmanship award. You also can find a nomination form at altatennis. org>ALTA Documents>Sportsmanship Award> Nomination Form. Congratulations to this issue’s sportsmanship winners!

Camden Place 2021 Summer Senior Women A5 Captain: Joanne Deangelo Players: Jean Dugan-Mahr, Mary Doyle Nominated by Louise Plagman, Falls of Autry Mill We were deciding whether we would play a third-set tiebreak, and because it was a make-up match, we were playing on a Sunday at 10:00 a.m. I had family coming over that afternoon and I hadn’t even realized we could play a full third set. Mary and Jean wanted to play a full third set if needed, but when they heard I had family coming over, they agreed to a tiebreak, which we ended up playing and we won. I was so grateful to them for doing that, just because I had a time restraint. They could have forced the full third set, which probably would have affected my game as I would be worrying about getting home. It was very nice of them to accommodate me, and for them, they are worthy of this sportsmanship award nomination.

Thornhill 2021 Spring Senior Day Women A7 Captain: Jo-Ann Pamboris Players: Kathleen Brown, Pat Woods Nominated by Karen Eskew, Shiloh Farms I made the silliest of mistakes. As I started typing in the facility for my match in the Waze App, I selected the incorrect “Thorn: neighborhood. I arrived at the incorrect facility 15 minutes early and of course no one was there. Why? Because I was supposed to be at Thornhill, which was about 30 minutes away. Waze then had me arriving at the correct facility past the default time. But in the spirit of ALTA, they agreed to wait until I arrived. As a second-place team, they could have easily taken the point for my line 2 as well as line 3. As you know, the object is to play tennis, not to take points by default. Thanks to these players and the captain!

Morning View 2021 Spring Thursday Women B7 Players: Sherri Brown, Lesley Poole Nominated by Katie Jones, Princeton Square Subdivision I am writing to nominate Sherri Brown and Lesley Poole from the Thursday Women’s Morning View Team. I captain the Princeton Square Women’s Team and we not only had to beat their team in the final match of the regular season to win the division, but again in the third round of the playoffs to advance to the City Finals. One of my opponents in both matches was Sherri, and I found her to be nothing but fair and courteous. In addition, she was so understanding of our overzealous behavior in winning and more than graceful in her loss. Furthermore, both she and Lesley reached out the day of the City Finals to wish me and my team good luck. As you know, you don’t always see this in tennis, so to me, Sherri and Lesley both exemplify the ideals of sportsmanship. I believe we could all take a lesson from these two ladies!

Laurel Park 2021 Spring Thursday Women B8 Captain: Patty Banko Players: Cindi Weber, Kristin Lee Nominated by Rosalind Rosenburg, Eagle Watch Tennis Academy I’d be remiss to not nominate Cindi and Kristin for the Good Sportsmanship Award. Whenever I think of the match in which they beat my partner and me, it’s impossible not to smile. They were cordial and respectful throughout both sets. Even when we began showing our frustration from missed opportunities, they were exceedingly kind and sportsmanlike in offering gentle words of encouragement. If one must lose a match, being defeated by such gracious and upbeat ladies is a wonderful way to lose.

Howell Farms 2021 Summer Mixed Doubles C7 Player(s): Kate Valor Nominated by: Anonymous Kate is young (24) and a relatively new player, but a lifelong competitive athlete. During the match, my partner hit a first serve wide and after her partner called the ball out, Kate said it was our point. We all looked at her a bit astonished because the serve was clearly out. She said the ball had grazed her body. None of us had seen it or heard it, but she insisted the ball had touched her. Kate exhibited great sportsmanship throughout the match, was always polite and friendly, and made good line calls. She exhibited the behaviors we would like to see in a new player to a team.

GOOD QUESTION

REACHING TOO FAR? My opponent in doubles hit a ball that fell just on my side of the net. It had lots of spin, bounced up and floated over the net. I reached just over the net and hit the ball for a winner. I did not touch the net, nor did the ball touch me. I claimed the point, but my opponent disagreed because I hit the ball on their side. Who is right? Lamar Scott, First Vice President Ordinarily, you are not allowed to reach over the net to hit the ball in tennis. However, the International Tennis Federation (ITF), Rule 25b clearly states there is one exception. The rule states “If the ball is hit and due to the spin or wind it is brought back over the net to the side of the original player who hit the ball, the opponent is allowed to reach over the net and play the ball without touching the net or the opponent’s court.” You were correct in claiming the point.

My partner was ready to receive serve and I was near the service line at the net. I clearly heard the opponent’s serve hit the net and thought I saw it as well. I immediately called a let and stopped play. The opponent’s serve landed in. Our opponent (who was at the net) contested the call of a let and said she saw the ball clearly cross the net without touching it. At first I hesitated, but then said “Well, it’s my call and you’ll get two serves anyway because the first serve landed in.” Our opponent relented and they started the point again with two serves. Was I correct? Lamar Scott, First Vice President In this case, you are correct. According to USTA The Code, Rule 27, “Any player may call a service let. The call shall be made before the return of serve goes out of play or is hit by the server or the server’s partner.” It was appropriate to then replay the point with a first serve. 46

NETNEWS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

REMOVING STRAY BALLS Is it ok to ask an opponent to pick up a ball left on the court before a point begins? Linda Shepherd, Sunday Women’s League Vice President Each player is responsible for removing stray balls and other objects from the player’s end of the court. According to USTA Rules and Regulations, Part 3 (42), whenever a ball is not in play, a player must honor an opponent’s request to remove a ball from the court or from an area outside the court that is reasonably close to the lines.

FOOT FAULT During our match, my partner and I noticed the opposing server was stepping on the line during his serve but was not following the serve to the net. Is this a foot fault and should we have called it? Tammi Copelli, Junior League Vice President According to The Code #24, it is a foot fault when a foot touches the line, even though the server did not follow the serve to the net. However, the receiver or the receiver’s partner may call foot faults only after all reasonable efforts, such as warning the server, have failed and the foot fault is so flagrant as to be clearly perceptible from the receiver’s side.

DID YOU EVER WONDER ABOUT … ? If you’ve ever had a situation occur in a match where no one on the court knew the rule that applied, send your inquiry to Good Question. ALTA officials answer questions in each issue of Net News and yours could be chosen next. Submit your question, along with your name, league, team name and level to altaeditor@altatennis.org.

Focus On Fun

I

t was a fun summer to be at so many elite tennis events. For instance, the Truist Atlanta Open really has become a tennis party, and the fans have responded in a positive way. Additionally, the Open has perhaps one of the most unique venues in tennis at Atlantic Station location, with a wonderful view of the Atlanta skyline. The Citi Open in Washington, D.C. has been going on since 1969, and this year had Rafael Nadal playing. The nation’s capital never disappoints with its timeless monuments to the country. Thousands of fans showed up for qualifying weekend and to watch Rafa practice. The US Open Series by the USTA is doing an amazing job with its lead up to the last major championship of the calendar year. The US Open just hits winner after winner. I do want to touch on Naomi Osaka. 48

NETNEWS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

I’ve known her since she was playing the small pro events with her sister as a young teenager. When you’re climbing the mountain toward your dreams, there is a lot of information on how to keep the course — how to stay strong and get back up after a setback. There is absolutely no information or advice on how to handle prosperity and the pressures that come with it. The top players in the world have a different life than even the other players on tour. The demands are enormous. When you are a driving brand that sells the game and the products you endorse, the spotlight can be very bright. Every match is scrutinized and statistics are broken down. For example, practice sessions like Nadal’s in D.C. can draw 4,000 people. It’s hard to work on a stroke or tactic with your coach on court when there are thousands of fans screaming for your wrist band.

The ability to balance, and more importantly organize, each detail is vital. I remember trying to warm up for matches and feeling bad that kids wanted autographs, but I had to focus on warming up for the match. I also recall feeling like I was letting down my sponsors when I would lose a match. I wish for Naomi to have a talk with Roger Federer or Serena Williams. They could mentor the young 23-year-old to a pathway of calm in the middle of so much attention. I often spoke to veterans on the pro tour about their approach to various challenges I was having as a tour player. Wisdom is so valuable and is only gained through traveling the road one experience at a time. Australian Open doubles champions from the USA, Scott Davis and David Pate (known as the “Nasty Boys”), were a little older and always there for advice. It really helped to have conversations with people going through the same pressures. Many players at all levels just lose the love for the sport. The recent occurrences of several athletes dealing with mental health issues are very real. The discussions that can be had now would help people find ways to negotiate those mental mind fields. Having as much fun as possible was always a powerful tool for me. No matter how bad I was losing on the court, I always reminded myself to smile and have fun! Try that the next time you are frustrated on the court. Flip that switch and find a way to have fun while losing; you may just find a way to win! Keep going for the lines!

IMPROVING YOUR GA ME

The Importance of Awareness in Tennis (and Life) BY AMY PAZAHANICK, OWNER/CEO AGAPE TENNIS ACADEMY

P

eople often ask, “What is the best way to play doubles tennis?” Well, the best strategy for doubles is to have keen awareness in each moment. Many players also wonder, “What is the best formation in doubles — one player at the baseline and one player at the net, both players at the net, or both players at the baseline?” There is a different solution for every “problem” — the problem being your opponents, which, of course, varies match to match and frequently, set by set or even game by game. The solution to this is being able to recognize your opponents’ patterns or tendencies and your patterns against them … quickly! Quickly being the optimal word. Keen awareness will give you the answer every time. Whether you can successfully execute your strategy once you are aware of what is going on is a different story altogether. If you are unable to execute, then that means you need to work on your physical skills, or if you are certain you have the physical skills and

aren’t executing in a match, then you know you need to work on your mental skills. Again, awareness is key because it will provide you with all the answers you seek. Have you ever played a match and had no idea — or felt like you had no idea — what happened, like it was seemingly all one, big blur? Maybe it was the margaritas the night before, but most likely you just need to slow down and gain more awareness in each moment as you are competing. Having good awareness does not mean you wait until a match is over to reflect on it. Keen awareness requires constant, immediate, and frequent adjustments. The team that does this the best is giving themselves the best chance of victory. This will give you a massive mental edge if you can begin doing this more consciously in your matches. And as you might have deduced by now, this works for juniors, adults, singles, or doubles, any sport … and while we are at it, life.

Ways to increase mental awareness in competition: • Stay focused but slow down, especially if the match is “getting away” from you; take your time between points. (If you are winning, then by all means keep the flow going.) • Breathe — yes, breathe. Breathing as you hit every ball will keep you relaxed and help you get a natural rhythm. There is a reason the professional players grunt. • Pay attention to any tension in your body. Check in with your body before you serve and return serve. Shake out any tension and let your muscles relax.

• If you are playing doubles, ask your partner (or gently fill in your partner) on what you see. The key to hearing each other is delivery and tone, but you can help each other see what the other one might not. • Literally watch the ball hit your strings. This will keep you in much better alignment and give you greater focus. Almost everyone moves their eyes ahead of point of contact too soon. Leave your eyes at point of contact for one second after the ball has left your strings.

As the great Arthur Ashe once said, the ideal state is to be physically loose and mentally tight. This article is simply a more detailed way of saying the same thing. Good luck and best wishes in all your matches! 50

USTA GEORGIA-GPTA TEACHING PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT: AMY PAZAHANICK

Hometown (City/State): Atlanta How did you get involved in teaching tennis? Tennis has been a big part of my life almost since birth. I grew up playing competitive junior tournaments and eventually played Division 1 collegiate tennis at Coastal Carolina University. I earned a degree in Sports Management and then started my own tennis academy in 2012. I am now managing and providing tennis and pickleball programming at four locations in metro Atlanta with a team/ staff of about 40 people. Best part of your game? Mental Dream doubles match would be me and… Patrick Rafter. When I’m not teaching tennis, I’m… playing pickleball, golf, traveling, hiking, reading, or hanging out on the beltline in Atlanta. My favorite tennis memory is: Winning the deciding match to clench the win for my college team to go to the NCAA Championships with all my teammates, my coach, and my parents watching. My favorite professional player is: Simona Halep #1 reason why I enjoy teaching & coaching tennis: To help other people feel good and be a positive outlet for them. What important tennis message do you want to promote? Tennis is such a wonderful tool to learn so many great life lessons, from confidence building to understanding your own physiology and mental states. Tennis is simply a vehicle through which one can grow, learn, or simply enjoy life.

Does Beer Work As A Recovery Beverage? BY DR. MARK KOVACS, CTPS, MTPS; CEO, KOVACS INSTITUTE; EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR INTERNATIONAL TENNIS PERFORMANCE ASSOCIATION

M

Why Have A Beer? Contains carbohydrates and electrolytes Replaces fluid lost during tennis play May reduce post workout inflammation

any of you may enjoy an adult beverage after a hard-fought tennis match. Some of you may consume a beer (or two) during a match as well. Beer, like sports drinks, contains carbs and electrolytes. Studies have shown that drinking a beer after exercise doesn’t have negative effects on hydration. In fact, people who consume beer moderately tend to be more active. Light beer, with added sodium specifically, has been shown to replace fluid loss rather well. If you can get your hands on non-alcoholic beer, some greater benefits have been seen. Non-alcoholic beer has been shown to reduce post-exercise inflammation and even upper respiratory tract illness. Moderation is key here, though. Too much alcohol can suppress muscle protein synthesis, can be a diuretic, and can lead to other challenges with excessive consumption. So, it is important to understand that one or two drinks after a tennis match can be an acceptable choice, while having a 12-pack is not recommended. Cool-Down & Stretch Along with having a beer or two after your match, you also should focus on the recovery of your entire body. Spend 5 minutes cooling down and stretching. Stretch your calves, lower back, hips, and shoulders. These are the areas that tighten

52

NETNEWS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

and stiffen up the most after tennis play. We know that the body tightens up while playing tennis. In our Kovacs Institute lab, we have tested many players before and after tennis practice and matches, and have found it is not uncommon to see a 10-percent reduction in range of motion in various parts of the body after playing tennis. I always recommend spending a few minutes on your body before you leave the court area. If you make this part of your routine, your body will thank you the next day. Heat If you have to drive a considerable distance after your ALTA match, I highly recommend you travel with something that can keep your lower back and legs warm. This could be as simple as a towel or an extra layer of clothes, a heat pack, or even a heat and/or vibration wrap. The purpose of all these options is to keep you warm and the blood flowing so that you do not stiffen up when sitting in a car for an extended period. In my experience, too many tennis players and other weekend warriors neglect the recovery period following exercise. Hopefully, these tips can provide you with realistic and manageable ideas to help you recover better after you play so you wake up the next day feeling ready to play more tennis.

NUTRITION

Can Juicing Help Your Tennis Performance?

BY PAGE LOVE, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, USPTA

J

uicing has been popular for decades to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and is considered a popular type of fad diet, but can it help your tennis performance? Well, depending on what your goals are, taking in fresh juices can certainly help with your fluid and antioxidant intake, but juicing as your primary meal intake of nutrition, or as the only pre-match or post-match fluid choice, can impact your tennis play negatively. Let’s look at the science. First, juice composition is limited to just the nutrients in fruits and vegetables, mostly antioxidant vitamins and minerals, some of which are important electrolytes lost in sweat. Unfortunately, juice does not replenish what most tennis players lose in their sweat, especially in our infamous Atlanta heat. Most tennis players need to replenish lots of fluid, sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Juices provide excellent sources of fluid and potassium (and even provide additional antioxidant vitamins), but most juices do not contain adequate sodium, calcium, or magnesium — the most common electrolytes lost in sweat. Most tennis players lose much higher levels of sodium and much lower levels of potassium in sweat. When we consume higher levels of potassium, we cause a diuretic effect to occur, which means we are at risk for flushing out or losing more fluids, the exact opposite of what tennis players should aim to do. In a recent article from the European Journal of Applied Physiology, the composition of sweat for sodium, chloride, and potassium in both low and moderate intensity exercise in the heat for 90 minutes contained the following ranges of electrolytes: sodium (659 mg to 1565 mg), chloride (931 mg to 238 mg), and potassium (102 mg to 194 mg). An example of juice mineral composition for a typical liter of a “green juice” made from one cup of spinach, two celery stalks, one cup of kale (approximately three leaves), two cups of romaine (approximately three leaves), one cucumber, one green apple, and half a lemon or lime, contains the following electrolyte and carbohydrate: sodium (35 mg/L), potassium (357 mg/L), and carbohydrate (10 g/L). This shows that common green juices do not contain the appropriate proportions of what tennis players lose in sweat. According to the Journal of Comprehensive Physiology, ranges of electrolytes levels present in typical sport beverages formulat-

54

NETNEWS SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2021

ed to replace sweat losses, range as the following: carbohydrate (60-90 g/L), sodium (180-630 mg/L), chloride (180216 mg/L), and potassium (54-90 mg/L). So, what is the answer if you enjoy juicing and want to enhance your tennis performance? Dietitians encourage you to consume a variety of fruits and vegetables and yes, some of this may be obtained from juices, but juices are limited in critical nutrition for the sport nutrition needs of a tennis player. Tennis players should consume a variety of essential nutrient sources, especially complete protein sources that are critical for rebuilding muscle and bone. Juices do not replace the nutrition found in meat protein and dairy products, nor do they replace the muscle energy sources needed for long tennis matches. To conclude, consuming a sport beverage that contains sodium in the levels mentioned above during the pre-match and on court timing intervals has been shown to appropriately hydrate and potentially enhance tennis performance. Additionally, consuming a protein beverage, such as chocolate milk containing between 15-25 grams of protein, within 15-45 minutes after play is more appropriate than just a juice alone to enhance rebuilding of lost muscle and replenish electrolyte losses more adequately. It is important to not put all our eggs in on basket when it comes to making recommendations for one food group or one type of product for fully meeting the nutritional needs for fueling for tennis play. Sorting through the myths and understanding the physiology of the body’s needs, as well and a more complete understanding of sport nutrition, is important. Watch out for diet fads and claims; these can easily cause decreases in performance and increase risk of heat illness versus better managing it!
