080378SUMMER 2022 Blueberry Festival,” said John Runfolo, executive director of the Greater Hammonton Chamber of Commerce since 2011. Runfolo has been a member of the Greater Hammonton Chamber since 1984. The Chamber is a nonprofit business organization dedicated to promoting and advancing the civic, commercial, cultural, economic, professional, agricultural and industrial interests of the people of the town of Hammonton and the Greater Hammonton Area.
The festival has only missed one year due to the pandemic in 2020. In 2021, the event returned and was presented as “Berry Glad to Be Back” and had a large attendance due to the residents being eager to get outside again.Runfolo noted that the event has grown so much throughout the years that the location has changed multiple times. Originally, it was held at the Hammonton Middle School, then expanded to Hammonton High School, where the event has been held for the last 20 “Ityears.was a nice little event and it eventually just grew into something,” Runfolo said. “We’ve gone from maybe 500 to 1,000 visitors to upwards of 10,000 visitors.”
The festival is sponsored by AMIAtlantiCare Hammonton, a radiology practice in town, and VisitNJ, the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism site. The day includes something fun for everyone with features of live music, a car show and a pancake breakfast. Arts and crafts are also presented at the event through a juried show. “It’s a great day for the family to come out,” RunfoloAlthoughsaid.residents come to celebrate the summer weather and fun, the biggest attraction is the savory blueberries and the blueberry-themed celebrations. According to Runfolo, who counted the blueberries himself for this year’s celebration, the event sells 900 crates of blueberries, which accounts for over a million blueberries at the festival. Other blueberry delights patrons can find at the festival include Blueberry Dessert Pizzas, blueberry lemonades, blueberry honey and blueberry pies of all kinds. What makes the event ‘one of the most highly anticipated events in South Jersey’, according to the chamber of commerce, is that it comes before the Fourth of July holiday and marks the birth of the blueberry season.“We’re getting the first part of the cropwe get a great crop right around that time,” Runfolo said.“We get some beautiful and sweet blueberries.” To get a taste of a blueberry from the Blueberry capital of the world come to the Red, White and Blueberry Festival on Sunday June 26 at Hammonton High School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. ■

Hammonton may be the blueberry capital of the world, but grape vineyards may be a close second, based on the growing number of wineries serving patrons in the South Jersey area. One notable newcomer, which will soon be celebrating its 8-year anniversary, is the White Horse Winery, which was established in 2014 and officially opened its tasting room in July 2016. As summer approaches, WHW beckons wine enthusiasts to come out, relax and sip a glass of wine while listening to music and enjoying the welcoming atmosphere of its tasting room, outdoor courtyard and firepits. The winery offers live music and food trucks on weekends, happy hour from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and a variety of special events throughout the month, including trivia nights, book clubs and sip and shops. The spacious tasting room, featuring a beautiful vaulted ceiling and a 22-foot long “racetrack” bar, is available for patrons looking for a traditional wine sampling experience.

Established by the Green Committee in 2015 on a town-owned lot near the NJ Transit train station at 11th and Washington Streets, the garden consists of 30 raised beds, each 12 feet by 4 feet. The town has provided the land free of charge and The Atlantic County Utilities Authority donates ecosoil compost on an annual basis.

To an outsider, Hammonton’s agricultural landscape and well-known reputation as “The Blueberry Capital of the World” would seem to make it a likely spot for a thriving community garden.“We have mostly folks who live in single family homes and just don’t have that sunny spot to grow food,” says Amy Cook Menzel, chair of the Hammonton Green Committee and a founding member of the town’s Community Garden. “And then there are people who just like the community aspect of it.”

Over several Monday evenings this spring, the Green Committee is presenting a series of workshops in partnership with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Atlantic County and other garden experts. The ‘Garden Talks’ are free and open to everyone and will include discussion such as “All About Tomatoes” (May 16), “Good Bug, Bad Bug – Organic Pest Management” (June 13), “Backyard Composting” (July 18) and “Hydroponics on a Budget” (August 16) and will all begin at 6 p.m.
Other founding club members who donate their time and efforts include Linda Esposito, Master Gardener Dudley Prince and Charley Crowley, whose previous experience with a large community garden in Massachusetts helped the Green Committee launch the program.

“That’s really helped us a lot,” says Menzel.Along with Hammonton residents, local organizations in the community also contribute to the garden including health-care provider, Atlanticare. This organization allowed the group to purchase new lumber in the fall and spring and to build new beds. There was also a local girl scout who donated small row boxes. Those contributions have provided a much-needed facelift to the plot, says Menzel. Last autumn, the club replaced the rotting wood of 15 bed frames with new, pressure treated wood. Initially the club voted against pressure-treated wood due to environmental concern but the development of a more ecosystem friendly method of treatment, combined with the newer wood’s durability, swung that vote heavily the other way.“We did a little more research,” says Menzel. “The components used for pressure treated wood today are very different from 20 years ago.” This spring, five more frames were built and the club hopes to have new frames for the entire garden in the immediate future. Plots can be rented for $20 per season and there still are a handful available. To apply for a plot visit
Founding club member, Lisa Zeuner, oversees the Children’s Garden at the site and will conduct several workshops for the kids throughout the summer.
“There’s just been a real outpouring of support from the community,” says Menzel. “And the town has been really helpful too.”

I had hoped to start a boutique wine importing business, but at the time that wasn’t feasible.”B.J. returned home to study industrial economics in college and completed an undergraduate thesis on the future of the micro-brewing segment of the brewing industry. After graduation he went on to work in manufacturing R&D and eventually started an engineering company, where he and his team developed and patented a highperformance wind turbine, among other projects.“My grandfather was originally a farmer who later became an engineer. He always used to say that if you become an engineer, you’ll always be employed,” recalls B.J. “I truly believe that every farmer is at least part engineer. When we pulled up to the property it immediately felt like it had a sense of place. It just felt right.” The Vintons took over the property in January of 2014 and started planting that April. dish, Joe’s special. The pasta with shrimp, clam, muscles, conch and crab meat in natural juices is right down a seafood lover’s lane. “He (Joseph Italiano Jr.) was the first one to do that in our area. Thankfully, Joseph Italiano Sr. gave his son room to explore and create! Another popular dish that is currently served is the veal and arugula. I was able to enjoy the breaded veal and arugula with a balsamic glaze. As a veal skeptic, I was reeled in and convinced that I should give veal more room on my plate in the future. The greens and veal were a wonderful combination and I can certainly understand why it’s a popular dish. The royal apple martini was a sweet tang but robust. It blended well with theStartingarugula.in May, patrons can taste new specials such as soft-shell crabs with chipotle sauce. The menu is mostly the same and the traditional dishes have been honored for years. However, if a special is in high demand, consistently, they may consider giving it a steady home on the menu. The veal and arugula is a great example of that. It was once a special until its popularity spoke for itself. Maplewood is in a lane of its own. Without imitating, everything on their menu is “Maplewood styled.”

This July marks the continuation of the longest running Italian festival in the United States. Starting July 11th and running through July 16th, the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Society is hosting their 147th festival, a tradition that has continued uninterrupted dating back to 1875. The occasion will feature all sorts of fun activities to bring the community together, including games, rides, food and live entertainers. But at its heart, it all comes back to the church honoring their past, their traditions and their beliefs. Louis Pantalone, the Society’s President for a decade now, explained the meaning of the festival, saying, “Giving thanks to our blessed Mother, as our ancestors did on that day July 16th, 1875. And their thanks was for getting over here to the United States, having a place to be, having good crops. Just being thankful for a new life. And we continue that in thanking the blessed Mother and our Lord for our good values and what we’re able to have as a group and as families.”
Membership in the Society is handed down from father to son, with there only being about 50 members. Pantalone joined in 1979 and was the Vice President for 23 years before becoming President. He has seen a lot during that time, including the remarkable turnout for last year, which he says drew close to 80,000 people who came through Hammonton during the festival week. He says that is the largest crowd they have seen in 20 years, with them being used to numbers closer to 40,000. “The entire community gets involved. There’s a lot that comes to this town during that week and it’s a big event for the town and for the patrons and for the businesses. Everybody participates.” As far as fun activities to enjoy during the feast week, each year a carnival comes to town that fills up an entire city block. That will include plen-

ty of rides suitable for both children and adults. And with this being an Italian festival, you will find that reflected in many different areas, including the food. Visitors to the carnival can head to the food stand to enjoy some classic Italian favorites, like pizza, sausage sandwiches and Italian ice. There will also be two stages for visitors to enjoy different genres of music on each night. And on the feast day itself, there will be a fireworks display to help celebrate the occasion. A free shuttle will be running from Hammonton Middle School to the festival to help alleviate parking congestion. The Society is not sure how many people will attend this year, but they were highly encouraged by last year’s incredible turnout. They were even able to have the festival during the first year of COVID when conditions were at their worst. The Society adhered to CDC guidelines while also continuing the festival, demonstrating how resilient their traditions are. “We were very proud,” said Pantalone. “We believe our Lady had a lot of interference there to help us pull it off. And we were the only one that we knew of in the state of New Jersey that had any type of festival.” Of course, it all comes back to the spiritual meaning of the event, which will be fully commemorated on July 16th. There will be masses throughout the day before the procession where the Society will carry the images of their various saints and religious figures through Hammonton. Pantalone explains this tradition dates back to the very first festival, though in those days the procession ran through the fields that the Society members owned. Eventually the procession route was changed to go through the town of Hammonton, which it has done ever since. A great deal of planning and organization from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel goes into making the festival a success each year. And though they are excited for the upcoming 147th festival, they are also well aware that the 150th festival will mark a huge milestone in their history. Even with that day being a few years distant, they have already begun planning for the occasion so that they can make it feel as special to everyone else as it feels to them. The Society itself is composed in part by Hammonton’s Catholic Church Parish. Although their Society is a closed-membership, they work hard to make everyone feel welcome in their celebrations, especially around the time of the festival. Commenting on that fact, Pantalone said, “So many people use this as a reunion year to come back and see people they went to school with or had acquaintances with. It’s a pretty neat situation.”The 147th Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Festival will be running in Hammonton, New Jersey from July 11, 2022 to July 16, 2022. ■
