Angels Community Outreach provides ‘a hand up’ for those in need BY KATHY CHANG

W

ith the creation of Angels Community Outreach, Katelyn Darrow wanted to emulate the compassion and kindness of the community which rallied behind her family and helped them survive during hardships that rocked her childhood. Angels Community Outreach has been giving those in need ‘a hand up’ in the community of Pitman and surrounding areas in Gloucester County for 13 years now. The nonprofit organization helps around 50 families a week on average. The number of families can vary week to week but can include more than 200 people. Darrow was just 12 years old when she began Angels Community Outreach in 2009. Its mission “is to give a hand up to those in need” from providing “clothing, toiletries, food … at no cost to those financially in need” and provide “social activities and holiday events to children in need.” please see ANGELS, page 4

The Darrow family has been paying it forward since then. The community was instrumental in getting Darrow and her family back on their feet. First, from domestic violence when Darrow, her mother and sisters had to pick up in the middle of the night to escape their abuser. “We left wearing only the clothing on our back, abandoning many of our favorite possessions,” she shared through a letter on her organization’s website. A few years later, the family faced another obstacle when a fire tore through their home. Darrow was in the third grade at the time and for a year, she and her family had to live with neighbors and friends as her family home was repaired. “Going from place to place without an official location to call home, not knowing where we were going to live the next day, was difficult,” Darrow said. “Looking back, what impacted me the most was how people helped us. So many people in the community reached out to my family during our hardships. I’ll never forget the compassion and kindness that was shown.” In 2015, Darrow moved to Los Angeles for college. She graduated in 2020 and continues to live and work in California; however, she is still involved from afar. Her mother, Elissa Darrow, now serves as the organization’s director. As victims of domestic violence, Elissa Darrow said she and her children went through a great deal of struggle. “My children often went without,” she said. “We began to get back on our feet only to be faced with a house fire. … During this time we were shown such a great amount of love and kindness from complete strangers. It is something my children and I will always remember. “I think the love and concern from others is the main reason why Katelyn wanted to start something to help families in need. It is heartwarming to go back to the same domestic violence shelter that once helped my daughters and me. Each time I deliver to a family there, I sit in my car and take a moment to realize how far my children and I have come because walking through those doors brings back a flood of memories.” Angels Community Outreach originally started off as a clothing closet equipped with shopping carts and a dressing room, which WINTER 2022

was important for the younger Darrow. “I know from personal experience that it can be difficult to keep your dignity in tough times,” she said. “Sometimes, something as simple as a new outfit can put a smile on one’s face and make them feel beautiful.” Angels Community Outreach is located at 334 South Broadway in Pitman. At the time, Elissa Darrow said she thought her daughter’s endeavor would just last a short time. However, the organization

has grown immensely over the 12-plus years because of the amazing support of the c o m m u n i t y, she said. The organization works on a referral basis. In order to receive services, a client must have a referral letter from social services, a principal, a pastor and/or a caseworker. “Once they acquire a referral letter, we can set up an appointment where the client will fill out a registration form and [they] are introduced to our services,” Elissa Darrow said. When helping families, Elissa Darrow said she “likes to do out-of-the-box ideas” and “little extra things to make people smile.” “No, these things are not always a necessity, but I feel touching someone’s heart is one of the most important things a person can do,” she said. “It could be purchasing a favorite snack for a child or a teen. Or ordering a pizza and having it delivered to a family living in a motel. One time, we provided waffle makers for all the families picking up food that week. We also provided pancake mix and syrup and the families had so much fun making waffles together. Or even buying birdseed for a senior citizen so he can fill his 4

birdfeeder and enjoy the birds.” Elissa Darrow said she believes Angels Community Outreach is an asset to the community, not only providing essentials but also helping “with things such as a new bed or refrigerator or stove.” “We provide a hand up,” she said. The organization has about 20 volunteers, who help on a weekly basis and more volunteers help out at various events.

SERVICES INCLUDE: CLOTHING CLOSET “With the way the economy is today, our organization wants to relieve financial stress from families by providing necessities,” Elissa Darrow said. “Our charity’s services are limited to seasonal ‘shopping sprees,’ where disadvantaged clients can visit the Pitman storefront and shop for clothing that is given to them for free.” Food and Toiletry Bank “On site we have a small food and toiletry bank,” Elissa Darrow said. “Those in need can receive food and toiletries for free.” Angels Sprinkles Squad: Birthday Assistance “We want to ensure every child feels special on their birthday,” Elissa Darrow said. “Families in need can sign up to receive a birthday bag filled with gifts and birthday cake for their child.” Veterans’ Annual Luncheon “Every year, Angels Community Outreach holds a community luncheon for veterans,” Elissa Darrow said. “We serve lunch, entertain with live music, and provide goodie bags to go. This is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for their service.” Kibble Corner: The Angels Pet Food Pantry “For many people they struggle with the day-to-day expenses and the cost of putting food on the table for their families,” Elissa Darrow said. “Pet food is not always in the budget for the furry family member. The ‘Angels’ have dedicated a section of our Food Pantry to the fur babies. Families that come into Angels Community Outreach will now be able to receive pet food. Once a month we will also deliver to the elderly or disabled.”

PROM DRIVE “Angels Community Outreach assists high school girls who want to attend their proms, but can’t because of financial difficulties,” Elissa Darrow said. “We want to make this a night to remember for a young girl who, despite financial hardships, would love to attend her prom like any other teen girl. We can help with the purchase of a girl’s please see ANGELS, page 5 08071

EASTER BASKETS PROJECT

“Angels Community Outreach wants to make sure every child is greeted Easter morning with a traditional Easter basket filled with goodies,” Elissa Darrow said. “Some of the children that receive our Easter baskets are living in domestic violence shelters or other county shelters. Sometimes parents are struggling financially, and it is a strain on the family to go out and purchase their child an Easter basket.” Annual Holiday Parties for Kids in Need “One of our missions at Angels Community Outreach is to create memories for children in need,” Elissa Darrow said. “Each year we hold an Easter and Christmas party where we will invite area children living in homeless shelters and low-income families to enjoy a fun-filled day together. We know this is not a necessity, but we think it is a wonderful memory for a child in need. In the past, we have held roller skating and bowling parties. For some children this was their first time going to a roller rink or bowling alley.”

BACK TO SCHOOL PROJECT “What makes our Back-to-School event special is that the children get to come to our event, eat dinner, receive a back-to-school haircut, socks and underwear, and walk around from table to table and choose their own backpack and back-to-school items just like their peers,” Elissa Darrow said. Angels “Toes and Tushies” Campaign “Our goal is to provide new socks and underwear to needy children for the start 08071

THANKSGIVING BASKET GIVEAWAY “We want to provide overflowing Thanksgiving baskets during this holiday, so families in need can celebrate Thanksgiving with a traditional meal,” Elissa Darrow said. Angels Toy Box Christmas Toy Drive “Many children and families are in need of a little extra help during the holiday season,” Elissa Darrow said. “Making ends meet day to day is a struggle, leaving very little resources for gifts under the tree. In this time of great need, we look to the community to help us fill these gaps. Every child deserves a magical Christmas.” Funding Projects “When Angels Community Outreach has extra funding, we try to help those in need,” Elissa Darrow said, noting they have helped fund beds, work uniforms, birthday bags, refrigerator, stoves, school uniforms and shoes. of school,” school,” Elissa Darrow said. “It is hard to imagine, but many children go without underwear and socks because their parents have to choose between new undergarments or paying the utility bills and putting food on the table. Something as simple as new underwear and socks can make a difference in a child’s/teen’s dignity. Changing in the locker room for a ‘tween or teen can be very embarrassing if they are wearing underwear/bras that are old, too small, or too big.” Halloween Costumes “Every child deserves to enjoy Halloween,” Elissa Darrow said: “No goblin or ghoul left behind.” “Each October we hold one special day where clients can come into the Clothing Closet with their children and let the kids pick out their favorite costume to show off on Halloween.”

sort of instant family adoption that takes place for each customer who enters. “I mean it truly is a family,” says Brandon Capaldi, whose late father launched the deli named after his own mother in 2004. “You know, a lot of these places claim to be family places, right? This place is — to the town of Pitman and the people who come here, and it’s because of my dad. My dad always said ‘you can’t treat people like robots’. He wanted to know each customer personally.” This, more than his impressive culinary skills, is what Dominick Capaldi passed onto his two sons and daughter before his life ended suddenly on a Sunday night in mid-January of this year. Only 59, the former police officer had just finished watching the day’s football games with his youngest son when he suffered a heart seizure and passed away less than a few hours later. “A guy that I didn’t know found me after the funeral so he could say, `I came to pay my respects,’” Brandon said. “‘Because from the first day I walked into your place, your dad treated me like I was family, like I knew him from way back.’” “My dad loved people,” said Brandon. “He could sit and talk to one table for an hour. And that is what is helping me through all this, seeing that he impacted a lot of people. I feel like I could be the same way. Just keep on his legacy, keep on what he started.’’ To that end, little has changed since the patriarch’s passing. Mama Marie’s is packed most mornings for breakfast, and even more consistently so at lunch, as repeat customers drop in for popular sandwiches like The Bull (named after Brandon), Little Nicky (named after Brandon’s older brother), or the current sentimental pick, ‘Dom’s Favorite.’ Mama Marie’s offers a shopping list of hot and cold hoagies, an array of paninis and a list of wraps and salads as well. The Aunt Louise (self-explanatory) is a cold hoagie with roast pork, but there are also three hot roast pork offerings on the menu, with names that reference cities in Italy. The family also cooks up their own meats, including a roast pork recipe that is on par with the best sandwich shops in Philly. Brandon happens to be a student of those shops, and from George’s Sandwich Shop in particular. According to Branson, a former cook from George’s showed him the right way to cook pork years ago (hint: Slooowww-ly), and he has added his own twist on the dish in the years since. George’s has been around for over 80 years. Despite his young age, Brandon envisions a day when the same can be said about the shop his father put his heart and soul into. “I plan on continuing this tradition down the line,” he says. “Hopefully, I’ll have a son so I can name him Dominick. I’d like to keep it going and pass it down to my kids someday. In Pitman, it is very touching in

pening its doors in May of 1926, the Broadway Theatre of Pitman has a long history of unforgettable entertainment. Originally a movie and vaudeville theater, The Broadway Theatre has been captivating audiences from the Delaware Valley and beyond for many years. Entertainers and stars such as The Flamingos, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Trent Tomlinson, Aaron Carter and many more have graced the stage at the Pitman Theatre. “The vaudeville players would leave New York and work up the Jersey shore and reach Pitman. Seven days a week, the players performed in houses and theatres,” Nathan Figlio explained via phone interview about the circuit on the way to Philadelphia from New York. Figlio is a retired nurse and an organist for the Pitman Theatre. Vaudeville eventually died out during World War II due to entertainment shifts and travel restrictions. Ralph Wilkins built and ran the Broadway Theatre of Pitman until the late 60s, early 70s. talkies (motion picture with sound) in 1929, two years after the theater opened its doors. The first talkie presented at the Broadway Theatre was, Alias Jimmy Valentine. Heather Grasso, Producing Artistic Director at the Pitman Theatre, mentioned virtually that even Shirley Temple may have performed at the Theatre. “Around the holidays, we were given a beautiful signed photo of Shirley Temple from a local woman that recently helped her mother clean out her attic. Her father, who passed when she was a child, was a huge Shirley Temple fan, HUGE! He had this photo in a frame. While clearing out the attic, they took the photo out of the broken frame, and on the back were the dates that she performed at the Broadway Theatre of Pitman. The year is not listed. We have tried to find more information but haven’t had much luck. We believe this is from the 1930s. Once she saw our information on the photo she felt that it was important for us to have it.” Created in a French Revival Motif by the Philadelphia firm of Eberhard, Magaziner, and Harris, some of the original 1,090 seats remain. With one balcony and eight boxes, the theater has kept some of its unique good looks. Of course, all renovations were mere enhancements to its charm. The original cast plaster details remain intact with the original mold still at the theater. The original 3/8 Kimball theater pipe organ was restored to full concert status, thanks to The Southern Jersey Theatre Organ Society. Today, an organist plays it while guests are being seated for some of the performances. When speaking with Figlio, he mentioned that Ralph Wilkins specifically chose the Kimball because “It sounded the most refined.” Figlio has been an organist for the theater since 2003. His father, Robert Figlio maintained and played the Kimball theater pipe organ on Saturday nights from

1965 to the late 70s. The longstanding theater had to face halts and closings, but the community of Pitman made sure to fight for the hub of theatrics, inspiration and special events. In March of 2005, one of the previous owners, Dan Munyon, closed the doors of the theater when U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge, Judith Wizmur, converted its Chapter 11 bankruptcy to a Chapter 7 liquidation. in February of 2006, Slack made no delay in rolling up his sleeves to work on the landmark theatre. Making sure to keep this gem polished, extensive renovations were made. He reached out to the community for help and brought in a restoration architect to assess the 1920’s era theatre. The doors re-opened in September of 2006 with events and movie specials. Hitting the ground running with Gypsy as its first theater production in 2007, the Broadway Theatre of Pitman won the ‘My Fox Philly Hot List Award’ for ‘Best Indie Theatre in the Philadelphia area’ that same year and the year after. When asked what past shows the The Broadway theatre is most proud of or known for, Grasso replied, “That is impossible to answer. We are proud of every production we have done, for so many reasons. Each cast is unique and brings new joy and wonderful memories to each of our audiences. From an audience standpoint, each individual connects differently. Being on the stage and behind the scenes is more than just the story you put under the lights. It’s about the process, the training, the connections and the bonds that are built along the way. Some of the actors cry when the run is over. I am still very close with people I did shows with 30 plus years ago. These bonds can last a lifetime.” Today, the Broadway Theatre of Pitman continues to uplift, inspire and entertain the community with live performances, concerts, special events and movies. “Our goal is to continue to produce live shows that wow our audiences. Our Wine Bar, previously known as Stage Right, is now being converted to a full bar and restaurant called Martini’s! We are very excited about this renovation and hope that the community will come to enjoy it as well,” Grasso says. Their 2022 lineup includes The Sound of Music, Pippin and Something Rotten. ess than 24 hours before participants of the 9th annual Chili Run met at the starting line, Ken Culbertson shot an email to all 250 people. “As for now,” he wrote, “the race is still on. We’ll assess the conditions.” Pitman, like most of South Jersey, had been blanketed by nearly a foot of snow on the final weekend of the first month of 2022. “But if we think it’s bad,” Culbertson continued, “you’ll just have to run a little slower.” Like the postal service, runners don’t take days off for rain, wind, fog, ice or, in this case, something called bombogenesis. Thankfully, the blizzard-like conditions arrived on Saturday and not Sunday, the day of the two-mile run. There was snow on the ground and a take-your-breath-away chill in the air, but the annual Chili race went on as scheduled on Jan. 30. “It was 16 degrees,” recalled Mantua resident, Earl Fisher. “We saw all of these people running the race, before the race, to warm up,” Earl’s son, Nick Fisher said. “My hands were freezing, with the wind hitting you at the start. But on the way back the sun was out and it warmed you up.” So did the celebratory chili and beverages at Carolina Blue, where the Culbertson, the Fishers, and more than 200 other local runners, organizers, and their friends and family gathered afterward. A DJ blared upbeat music, awards and Chili Run swag were doled out, and, of course, chili was consumed. “It’s a fun environment, a great crew,” said Brad Cook, one of the owners of Carolina Blue. Cook has hosted this event since the idea was created by Culbertson over 10 years ago. The Chili Run is one of 52 races Culbertson’s running venture, Good Day for A Run, is hosting in 2022. It is the only run that features a penguin running with a cup of chili on its logo. And it’s almost always the coldest run of the

year – unless the weather is even worse during Part II of the run which comes two weeks later in mid-February. “It started off as a one-day event; it used to fill up quickly, so that’s why we now offer the second date,” Culbertson, a Mullica Hill resident, said. “We can get about 250 people in the restaurant comfortably.” For a $38 entry fee, runners got

a bowl of chili, a beverage of their choice, a commemorative photo, Chili Run swag (a neck gaiter this year) and a competition number to attach to their cold weather running gear. You had to bring your own snow boots. “I was a little worried – our (neighborhood) streets are still snow-covered,” Nick Fisher said. “We had to stay on the right side of the road (while running). The left side wasn’t as cleared, so you had to gauge whether you wanted to pass somebody. You had to go the opposite way to make sure you were safe.” The 24-year-old Fisher finished first in his age bracket. Pitman High School alum Beth Samuel, now a Wenonah resident, placed third in her age group while running with her teammates from the Mullica Hill

Women’s Triathlon Club. “It wasn’t the snow – it was the cold air. My lungs felt like they were going to explode,” said Samuel, an army veteran who rowed in college. “It was the longest two miles I ever ran.” It was so cold, Samuel said she didn’t even realize she was running at a fast pace. And soon enough, it was over and she could kick back with a couple hundred other South Jerseyans and enjoy a hearty brunch. “I just like the spirit of it, I like being motivated to be outside when it’s freezing cold,” Samuel said. “I love seeing a lot of my friends here. We always see a lot of familiar faces. It’s a nice motivator to get out during the winter.” A portion of the proceeds from the Chili Run benefitted TOPSports of Harrison Township, sports outreach program for children 4-18 with special needs. ■
