Letter from the

EDITOR: H appy Spring 08108!

As the cold weather and snowfall move further behind us, Collingswood is ready to step into spring. The blooming of flowers and the increasingly warm weather are not the only changes the borough will see this spring. With COVID protocols easing and mask mandates being lifted, there are still many people who are struggling with the aftermath of it all. Luckily for the people of the 08108 and surrounding areas, the Genesis Counseling Center is ready to offer their mental health services and get everyone back on track (See Page 6). For those who prefer to take time for themselves to clear their minds, Saddler’s Woods offers 25 acres of forest, young woodlands, meadow and wetlands to explore (See page 16). One of the nice spring days coming up soon will provide the perfect opportunity to go for a walk and discover something new.

The fundraising efforts to keep the Saddler’s Woods clean and inviting are not the only ‘green’ things going on in Collingswood this season. A member of Sustainable Collingswood has received the position of chairperson of Plastics & Recycling Committee of Tri-County Sustainability, he is working hard to bring in new ideas and prepare the borough for the banning of plastic bags (See page 10). If you are not feeling adventurous enough to wander through the woods, but still want to get out of the house on a nice spring day, The Pop Shop in Collingswood can be found on main street and will offer you a taste of simpler times and a delicious fountain soda (See page 8). Be sure to check out Keeping up with Collingswood (Page 18) for more spring adventures and remember to follow us on Instagram at 08108_ Collingswood or visit us online at www.08108collingswood.com.

of issue they are facing,” Barry Bailey, Executive Director of Genesis Counseling Center in Collingswood said. “From our younger youth all the way to adult programs, the center helps to recognize all problems our community faces from substance abuse issues to domestic violence.” Working for over 35 years in the behavioral health industry, Barry knows a thing or two about the importance of early detection and intervention when it comes to coping with mental health issues. Barry has been largely credited for starting and implementing Genesis Counseling Center’s Early Intervention Program (EIP) that helps adolescents obtain appropriate screening to determine the need for more intensive mental health or addiction services. “The EIP program works with adolescents and families being referred from a variety of sources and provides family stabilization and prevention services for both parents and adolescents,” Barry said. Schools, Child Protective Services and individual families are this program’s primary referral source and I help to facilitate group sessions and meets with families participating in the process.” Genesis Counseling Center also provides various other

he world is changing every day and our minds and ways we adapt change with it. From unprecedented times with the coronavirus pandemic to changes within personal relationships and goals, the ways in which individuals handle change and life in general vary by person and can bring about various challenges both mentally and emotionally. For the Collingswood community, Genesis Counseling Center helps provide support and care for individuals who are struggling. Established in 1979 by the center’s founder Gabriel Guerrieri, Genesis Counseling Center is a nonprofit organization that quickly rose in popularity as being one of the top mental health and addiction treatment centers in the Southern Jersey area. With its main headquarters in Collingswood and additional locations in Camden and Marlton, the centers now consist of over 50 well-trained and high-quality psychologists, social workers, and additional staff qualified to provide the help individuals need. “Our treatment programs are comprehensive and allow an individual to have well-rounded support for any type

he world has made great advances culturally and in terms of technology over the years, but sometimes it is still easy to get nostalgic for the parts of the past that were fun. The classic songs, the timeless fashion and the nights when you always knew where you could hang out with your friends for a good time. The Pop Shop in Collingswood is a throwback to those simpler times, modeled after the ‘40s era soda fountains. For those who lived through that period, the Pop Shop is a blast from the past. And for those too young to have experienced those days, it is a chance to step into a scene from something like Back to the Future or Happy Days. “The whole feeling behind the core and everything else is just the old-fashioned ‘50s, 60’s—the soda counters,” said Jessica O’Donnell, the General Manager of the eatery. O’Donnell was a chef in Philadelphia starting in 1997 until she took on her role with the Pop Shop just a few years ago. “People used to go and get ice cream and custom sodas…Kind of think of your Woolworth’s 5 and 10 way back in the day.” That style comes to life both on the exterior and the interior of the Pop Shop. Inside you will find a black and white checkerboard floor, walls painted in bright pastel colors and even a ‘50s style jukebox. You can sit down for dinner with family at one of the

leather booths, or grab a stool at the counter to enjoy a modern take on the classic dishes. As you would expect, the menu offers a lot of the favorites that have stood the test of time. Milk shakes, grilled cheese sandwiches, all-day breakfasts, sundaes and burgers you can customize to your liking. In fact, in 2021, Suburban Family magazine voted the Pop Shop as having the best burgers in South Jersey. Though they also shake things up with some more modern offerings. “I think our menu is that of a very upscale diner,” said O’Donnell. “We do seasonal specials every two weeks. Those sometimes really kick things up a notch. We just had a lobster benedict.” Another welcome modern addition is the Pop Shop also has offerings for a variety of diets, from vegetarian, to vegan, to gluten-free options. The Pop Shop offers something for every generation, but just like soda fountains used to be back in their heyday, they are especially welcoming of younger diners. If you keep an eye on their social media pages, you can see all sorts of events aimed at making sure children have a good time. This includes professionals who create balloon animals during dinner time, and beloved cartoon characters who come in for meets and greets once a week. Such recent events include a Minnie Mouse Valentine’s Day Party and a Willy Wonka chocolate party. However, there is plenty for adults to please see BITES, page 13

eremiah Williams is ready to embrace leadership with a smile on his face and organization in his heart. The newly appointed chairperson of Plastics & Recycling Committee of Tri-County Sustainability, Williams is ready to take on the new role with focus and determination. Williams attended Philadelphia Biblical University (now Cairn University) where he received a bachelor’s in Biblical Studies and a bachelor’s in Business Administration in 2004. He added a master’s under his belt in Management and Finance from Rutgers University Camden in 2006. He collected cans here and there as a child, however; it wasn’t until 2018 that he took recycling and eco-positive actions more seriously. Regularly attending the town hall meetings, he received information about recycling and how plastic bags pertain to the overall environment. As his

mind turned, he researched the resin recycling code (Recyclable plastics are labeled with numbers 1-7 to inform workers what kind of plastic it is, and how it should be processed). With every piece of new information, Williams walked further down the journey of reducing his carbon footprint. The core goal that started this all was to minimize his waste outtake. As of February 2022, it takes at least a month for Williams to produce a bag of trash. Even his food bits are used for composting, it’s been beneficial for his garden. Mixing the leaves from his backyard and his food scraps, Williams can use less soil. He carries his own bamboo utensils when eating out as well. It’s safe to say Jeremiah is not into the fad of appearing as though he cares about the earth. He’s striving to be a good steward to the land around him. Williams has been a member of the Plastics & Recycling Committee of TriCounty Sustainability since 2017/2018. He stumbled upon the committee on Facebook and attended their events. He details, “Before the pandemic, you know things were in person, I used to go to the environmental meetings. I didn’t say nothin’ because I was still learning and understanding how stuff works. Then, as I started doing more work and finding out new stuff, I had questions. The more questions I asked, the more stuff I found out. After a while, I thought: Okay, please see WILLIAMS, page 14

specialized programs for individuals seeking assistance with mental health issues. For those who have recently received a DUI/DWI charge or were an unwilling participant in a car accident related to the use of alcohol, the counseling center offers special DUI programs that teach individuals about the dangers of getting behind the wheel while intoxicated and what to look out for if you are involved in a situation where the driver is too intoxicated to drive. “Programs like DUI are part of the Drivers Education course offered at schools where we can reach youth early before they reach driving age so they are aware of the signs and also to make sure they have the knowledge to act accordingly.” Barry said. Genesis Counseling Center also offers a general Student Assistance Program which links a student assistance counselor with students in a school setting to help children dealing with problems related to personal life or academics. This program augments school-based services already in place and does not place an undue burden on the contracted school’s budget. The program has been running for a little over 20 years with much success and has largely served middle and high-school aged students. For individuals facing arrest for a non-violent offense related to a problem with drug and alcohol use, Genesis Counseling center

participates Drug Court. The program helps to keep individuals from facing jail time and rather places them into counseling to help work out and resolve their problems.

The program is extremely successful throughout the country, and Genesis and Camden County were part of one of the initial model Drug Courts at the onset of the Drug Court Program. “This idea is a joint venture between certain treatment centers and the Superior Court system to work with people who have

a problem with abusing substances and need treatment to stop the hellish cycle,” Barry said. “It is important that if these individuals can successfully resolve their issues through therapy, kept out of the system and move on to living healthy, successful and fulfilling lives.” Businesses within the Collingswood and surrounding areas can also benefit from

Genesis Counseling Center’s Employee Assistance Program which provides employees of a company with confidential and professional support services for problems like anxiety and work performance by a licensed professional. “With the implementation of programs like these, we hope that the community can know it is okay to ask for help and that help is available,” Barry said. Other specialized programs that Genesis Counseling Center offers include: • Bullying • Anger Management • Marriage and Family • Compulsive Gambling • Grief and Loss • Successful Parenting • Suicidal Thinking • Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Issues Counseling for the specialized programs is offered both individually and through group sessions. Individuals seeking support can learn more about appointment scheduling and costs at www.genesiscenters.org. As Genesis Counseling Center looks to the future, they hope they can continue to provide support to the local community and stay relevant to the many issues facing individuals today. “We hope to continue implementing programs and counseling that stays appropriate to what individuals are seeking today,” Barry said. “We hope to continue to eliminate the stigma around mental health and keep our doors open to an environment individuals can seek out for comfort and support.” ■ 08108

enjoy as well. “Once a month we do a paint night with Spotted Frog Art Studio, that’s simply for adults,” O’Donnell said. “Grab a bottle of wine, we are a BYO. We have trivia night every other Tuesday.” O’Donnell went on to explain how both Pop Shops (there is another location in Medford) are also available to be used for business meetings, with reasonable customizable rates for private parties. She said she is even trying to expand this to include being able to accommodate offices that would like to host monthly business meetings with a breakfast buffet. Like many businesses, COVID threw a wrench in the plans of the Pop Shop for a while, but O’Donnell is relieved to be able to say that things have slowly been getting back on track. The location is open every day of the week for dine-in and also offers delivery and online ordering. But the thing O’Donnell still wants to see return to normal is how much more they used to be able to do for the neighborhood. “The Pop Shops have always been a big supporter of a lot of the things in the community,” she said. “Baseball teams, and the schools, and dine and donates and being very charitable…With COVID, while we still do as much as we can, it’s not as much as we would like.” However, like the vintage decades it emulates, the Pop Shop is looking timeless. It has already been around for 17 years and appears poised for many more to spread joy in the community. For those looking to stop in, you can visit the Collingswood, New Jersey location at 729 Haddon Avenue, or call 856-869-0111. ■ PHOTOS BY JAMIE GIAMBRONE

this is unearthed territory. This stone has never been turned before. Okay, fine, so you gotta blaze that trail and go do it. I’ve been doing it for the last four years.” When asked how it felt to be appointed chairperson, Williams smiled humbly and replied, “It’s a great opportunity,” that’s when he grinned from ear to ear and continued, “Now I gotta do somethin’ with it. It’s an opportunity with responsibilities to make something happen. When you get opportunities, they only come one time. They ain’t comin’ twice. So, we gotta think: What are we gonna do with it?” During a virtual interview, Williams looked focused and ready to go! With a mission statement, already in the works, Williams has his head in the game. “We get leadership roles and you know… the game is on! All the work you’ve been talking about before, all the work you’ve said needs to be done. Well, now you’re on the clock. So, let’s get it done. That’s kinda been my mindset from the beginning.” The plastic bag ban is coming and Williams wants to prepare the community with alternatives. His focus is to encourage people to use carry-on bags now, so they are prepared for the ban beginning on May 4th, 2022. “Have it in your car, your purse, or your backpack,” he mentions twice. ■

A LOOK AT

LOCAL HISTORY Saddler’s Woods

BY SAM DONNELLON

J

anet Goehner-Jacobs’ passion for Saddler’s Woods began two hours north of the Haddon Township-based preserve, and more than four decades before she even knew it existed. Growing up in the wooded northern community of Packanack Lake, N.J., her bedroom looked out over an expanse of woods that envelops a man-made lake which continues to survive and thrive today. “That’s where my love of nature began,” says one of the co-founders of the Saddler’s Woods Conservation Association (SWCA). “It’s where we played, where I made my explorations. I’ve always loved nature. When I see more than three trees, I want to go and take a look.”

When Goehner-Jacobs first took a look in 1999 (at what is now the official entrance to the 25-acre tract of land tucked between MacArthur Boulevard and Cuthbert Boulevard) she saw what most people saw; a dump site. The land was filled with discarded car engines, rusted refrigerators and about three tons of concrete. “The amount of debris really motivated us to start the preservation effort in Saddler’s Woods,” she said. “The section that was the most deplorable is right where people would see. All they saw was litter and junk, so why not put a field there, a building there? What could it be if we cleaned it up? Remove the concrete. Take out the car engines. We realized we had to clean it up if we were going to preserve it.” This began a 4-year reclamation of the please see HISTORY, page 17

a forest fire, or by man-made means. Only .4 percent of all forests on the east coast can be classified as old growth, says Goehner-Jacobs, and Saddler’s proximity to Philadelphia separates it from even those. Scientists and students, like those from The University of Virginia and University of Wisconsin, have come to the woods to measure the effect of pollution on micro-lichens. The research includes their existence and what kinds are more tolerant than others, which are an indication of the effects of air pollution. “That’s what makes Saddler’s woods quite unique for the East Coast,” says GoehnerJacobs. “The old growth ecosystem contains big old trees as you might expect, but also it’s the entire web of life that really creates an old growth ecosystem. It’s in the soil, it’s in the ferns and the trees. That’s what really separates Saddler’s woods. And why it is so widely studied in the scientific community.” It’s also why, almost

20 years later, the SWCA remains vigilant, maintaining the space mostly through fundraising and grants from groups like the William C. Rohrer Foundation. For example, they have raised about half of the $20,000 needed to launch an annual rental of goats from an upstate New York farm this spring and early summer. The intent of “Operation Goat” is to clear

the upland portion of the woods from heavy infestations of English ivy, Japanese honeysuckle, mugwort and -- hooray – poison ivy. Unlike other animals that leave seeds in their waste and can actually exacerbate the problem, goats eat and digest everything. “They really love poison ivy,” says Goehner-Jacobs. “It’s like what French Fries are to us, poison ivy is to them.” ■ PHOTOS BY JAMIE GIAMBRONE
