PRIDE PROMOTING in the Collingswood Community 081086SUMMER 2022

Morrison began working with the LGBTQ+ community while he was a student attending Temple University, majoring in Journalism, PR and Advertising. He was approached by the editor of the Philadelphia Gay News to review a copy of a book called “Coming Out.” That book review led to an internship with the newspaper, which eventually led to a job as an editorial assistant after college. His role at PGN led to a number of connections and opportunities in the gay community in the Philadelphia area which, along with his acting and drag performances, eventually led to his philanthropic efforts. “I eventually got to a point where I felt there were things I could do for the community and use my different platforms to help other charitable and non-profit organizations. I really wanted to give back to the community that had supported me for all of these years, so I started using my drag to go to charity events and raise money for underfunded places, such as schools and libraries.”

who has been performing as Brittany Lynn since 1996, has long been an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community and has been recognized by numerous organizations for his efforts in educating and bringing awareness to mainstream communities in regard to alternative lifestyles. He has been hosting Drag Queen Story Times since 2015. “At its heart, Drag Queen Story Time is a literacy program,” says Morrison who, in addition to his performances as Brittany Lynn, serves as a public relations and marketing representative for various charities. “The main goal is to get kids interested in books and reading. The program also helps to bring visibility to the LGBTQ+ community. When we do these programs, there are a lot of non-binary and questioning youth, as well as their parents, who come up to us afterwards with questions or looking for resources. There may be kids in the audience who see themselves reflected in what I’m doing, and it gives them some hope and knowledge that there are other people out there like them.”

In 2015 Morrison was presented with a Community Hero Award from the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund, which supports nonprofit organizations in the Greater Philadelphia LGBTQ+ community, and honors individuals whose work and leadership advance the rights of that community. “I’m proud to be able to give back to the community that has always supported me, and I feel like every time I do a story time or public event it helps bring visibility and awareness to let people know there are other cultures and lifestyles out there,” says Morrison. “It’s important for others in the LGBTQ+ community to know that you can be accepted and live your life however you choose to live Morrisonit.”will also serve as host of Collingswood Pride Council’s first Pride Pop-up event on June 11th, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the corner of Haddon Avenue and Irvin Avenue, which will feature a live DJ, drag queens and burlesque dancers, vocal performances, face painting, a photo booth, food and beverages, and health screenings by Jefferson Health and Cooper Hospital.

Morrison presents his Drag Queen Story Time program at numerous libraries, museums and other cultural centers throughout Philadelphia, Atlantic City and the surrounding areas. He reads stories focusing on self-love, acceptance and appreciation of others, with the goal of entertaining children while inspiring a love of reading. He recently added puppets to his show who ask questions that parents or kids may want to ask, but are afraid to speak up about. “People may have a hard time starting a conversation about these issues,” he says. “I wanted to be able to provide resources for parents looking for more information and teach kids that being different is okay. The program is designed to stretch kids’ imaginations and normalize the fact that others may be different, but that’s what makes them special. I feel like this program has so much potential to help young people in these situations. If there was a program like this when I was a kid it would have made such a big difference and had an impact on me personally. I don’t think I would have felt so alone.”

Haddon Township and the Haddon Township Equity Initiative (HTEI) is looking forward to their second Pride event taking place from June 9 through the 11.

“Pride was our way to show the community that we truly are an inclusive place for all and that if we all chip in as a community, we can accomplish really big things,” said Isis Williams, HTEI Board President.

The Initiative started last year after eight moms went to the Mayor of Haddon Township, Randall Teague, and expressed their wish for a more inclusive environment where people of all walks of life could feel safe and accepted. Teague wholeheartedly agreed and helped them create the first Pride event in the summer of 2021. “We were really able to tap into the community and the local business owners, the school groups and they were all very supportive of having an event in town that was reflective of inclusivity,” said Williams. Much like last year’s event, this year will offer multiple days of celebration and education and the event planners are expecting an even larger crowd from the 7,000 they welcomed last year. The event starts on June 9 with an incredible parade starting at Haddon Ave from Crystal Lake Ave to Strawbridge Ave. Like last year, people can join in the parade and can be seen dancing in the streets embracing their uniqueness. The parade ends at Haddon Square with LGBTQIA+ friendly music, entertainment, dancing, food and drinks. According to HTEI Board Member, Philip ‘Pip’ Haxby-Thompson, last year the parade brought together many LGBTQIA+ members of the community who expressed how this was the first time they had felt seen, heard and “Unfortunately, embraced.there still is a lot of bigotry and a lot of prejudice and people want to feel safe and they want to feel seen,” said Haxby-Thompson. “That’s really what we try to highlight within Haddon Township and the surrounding communities. We do welcome people from all walks of life.” On June 10, the celebration continues with Pride and Progress Community Night sponsored by JFK Living. This event helps to bring education into the fun with informaTwp. Expects Thousands for Second

The three day event is welcoming the entire Haddon Township and surrounding communities to come out and celebrate all the things that make people unique while also educating attendees about LGBTQIA+ matters from healthcare to safe spaces.

Rather than produce Americanized versions of Italian desserts, Chef John Caiola and his business partner Mike Paletta keep it traditional, going so far as to import their shoppe’s gelato directly from Italy.

Most people living in America will never get to experience going to Italy. But at Gelato Dolceria, you can have the next best thing with a shop that strives to be as authentic as possible.

“Everything we get, everything we use, is from Italy,” said Caiola. However, while such authenticity is admirable, it did also make business tough once COVID first broke out and the store could no longer get their imported goods. Luckily, they had enough stockpiled to wait things out, but they are grateful that they did not meet the fate of so many other businesses that had to shut down. “It was really a trying year, 2020, in Collingswood,” Caiola continued. But he’s proud that they made it and did not have to compromise on what makes them special. “It’s just nice to have the product from Italy. If it was an American gelato, I would not open it.” It is not simply a matter of tradition for

Sunset MUSIC SESSIONS

In between Circles Thai and the Collings, the community of Collingswood had their BYOC seats sprinkled throughout the concrete on the last Thursday of April. Others stood up to watch the musical sensation, Snacktime Philly, give the crowd snazzy, jazzy, foottapping and down-to-earth jams. Snacktime Philly was the first musical set out of Collingswood’s music series: Sunset Music Sessions. Sponsored by all the businesses of Collingswood, the last Thursday of every month will feature musical artists on Haddon Avenue and Powell Lane. As the weather gets warmer an outside music event makes way to enjoy the sun, fresh air and socialArtdistancing.Dupras, Director of Community Development, mentioned via phone interview that the main focus is to re-engage fellow“Oneneighbors.ofthebest ways to do that is through live music because it’s a shared experience,” said Dupras. “There’s going to be great music but the businesses wanted to make sure there was a safe space to have the live music.” And, great music it is. Snack time Philly played covers such as “Come together” and their original jams such as “milk”. I adored the “Soul clapping” breakdown. Snacktime Philly is a six-member band birthed out of the early snapshots of the pandemic (fall 2020, actually). The high energy and talented group consist of, Yesseh Furaha-Ali on the alto Saxophone and lively vocals, Ben Stocker blowing the tenor saxophone, Michael Spearman playing the trombone, Eric Sherman on the trumpet, Sam Gellerstein jamming on the Sousaphone and Austin Marlow solidly giving percussion a good name on the drums. Gelato Dolceria in Collingswood is actually the shop’s second newer location, with the original starting in Haddonfield about seven years ago. It’s not all Frank Sinatra, we have Neapolitan music, I have opera…We cover the full realm of what we think the experience should be.” Caiola is also very proud of the family vibe that exists between the shop and the community. That is something that started between him and his partner Paletta, who is also his best friend of over 20 years. With Caiola’s talent as a chef, and Paletta’s business acumen as a wholesale distributor, they were excited to start their own business. They consider each other to be like family and now they share that familial atmosphere with their customers who have become regu“When we say our family is your family, that’s the community,” Caiola said. “I have friends we go to dinner with that are customers that come here twice a day. That’s how well I know them for six years. We’ve been to Phillies games with them. There’s just things that we do, and that’s the camaraderie you get just by hanging out.”

He has cooked for major companies like the Hyatt and Wyndham hotels and has made food for major public figures like Bill Clinton, George Bush and Henry Kissinger. He and his partner Paletta did not see authentic Italian gelato as a mere gimmick, it is a method they have stuck by because they have been to Italy and have seen that the Italian way is genuinely superior. “A lot of the gelato that’s here [in America] is a base,” said Caiola. “You put the base in it, you put your flavoring in it, and eight minutes later you have some gelato.” Explaining how it is done in Italy, he said. “It’s all milk, it’s all natural. That difference is something their patrons and the community recognize and appreciate. In 2019, Gelato Dolceria’s gelato was named the Best Gelato in the State of New Jersey by Food and Wine and Travel and Leisure Magazine. They keep over 30 flavors in the shop and rotate in new ones, but you can find popular varieties such as pistachio and ricotta. They even have vegan options. And it is not just gelato that patrons can enjoy at Gelato Dolceria. The store has also received recognition for their cannoli that Caiola makes in-house. You can get fresh, hot drinks as well, such as genuine cappuccino and espresso, not like what you will find at Americanized big name chain coffee shops.

PROUD of Collingswood

With victorian-style houses that feature colorful stained glass windows and architectural buildings that make up Collingswood’s downtown area, the Proud Neighbors of Collingswood cherish pieces of the town’s history and continue to preserve it for future generations.Matthew Walker spent his childhood growing up in the historic town of Collingswood where his parents also lived in their adolescence. “It’s always had a significance to me,” Walker said. Walker and his wife Andrea Wedo, who previously lived in Pennsylvania, decided to move back to Collingswood and bought a home in 2017. As the couple were settling into their new house, they would soon discover a welcome package at their front door from an organization called the Proud Neighbors of Collingswood.“Thefirst thing that we noticed was that there was a grant that Proud Neighbors was providing. If you were to maintain your stained glass windows in your house they actually offered you some money back,” WalkerWalkersaid. explained that at the time, President of Proud Neighbors, Marlene Granitz, visited the couple’s home and assessed their stained glass windows. The couple then went ahead with repairs and was given over $100 for the fix. The couple was then invited by The Proud Neighbors of Collingswood to come to one of their annual meetings, in which Walker and Wedo initially thought they would just meet other residents and receive their grant. However, the couple decided at the meeting to join the non-profit and have been members since 2017. The organization strives to educate the community by sharing ideas about restoration and preservation with residents, the business community and the local Walkergovernment.explained that the Proud Neighbors of Collingswood was established in 1983, by a group of volunteers in town as a not-for-profit organization. The organization started as an outgrowth of a Collingswood Junior Women’s Club project that focused on the beautification of the Collingswood downtown business district, which according to the non-profit was “suffering from benign decay” in the early 1980s. Sue Yoder and Judy Everts envisioned the idea of an expanded group which could include men as well as other community members interested in encouraging improved maintenance and appreciation of the town’s character. Walker noted that the name of the organization came from residents who were passionate about the town and proud to be residents.

The Proud Neighbors of Collingswood are involved in a multitude of ways such as the Collingswood Community Garden, EcoPlaza, as well as the restoration of stage lighting and pole planters along Haddon Avenue. They also help fund banner poles for the borough’s main street and help repair bike racks. In the past the group has also donated to Collingswood Cares, which helped residents in need during the pandemic.Inthe earlier years, the group started the Porch Brunch and House Tour which used to take place the Sunday after Mothers Day. The event was created to bring attention to the distinctive architectural features inside the houses and the classic front porches. It also acted as a way to generate interest in its mission to coincide with National Preservation Week which is now a monthlong national celebration. Walker noted that non-historical homes, modern homes and businesses were also included in the tours. However due to the pandemic, it has not been held since 2019 due to health concerns, which Walker hopes to bring back soon for residents to enjoy. This summer residents can look forward to the Fourth of July House Decorating Contest and the Town-Wide Yard Sale. “I think it’s really cool to see the entire town outside and interact with each other,” Walker said. The yard sale is scheduled for June 4, with a rain date of June 11 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. more information visit https://proudneighborsofcollingswood.org/ Wednesday-DINNERSunday5:00pmto10:00pm

The reason is simple. For the last two decades, Collingswood’s ‘Glad to Be Single Again’ tax incentive program offers belowmarket financing and deferred loan payments for those who convert duplex properties back into the single-family homes they were built to be. For a young family, or couple seeking to buy a home in the current competitive real estate marketplace, that can be the difference in choosing Collingswood over nearby municipalities. It’s not the only reason Collingswood residents visit the Society’s museum and library at 1900 Park Boulevard in Camden. High school yearbooks dating back to the 1930s and town directories that identify ancestors and previous dwellers, are all housed inside The Charles S. Boyer building, which includes the Hineline Research Library and Auditorium as well as the Camden County Historical Society Museum. “We have extensive Collingswood photographs, we have postcards as well,” says Elwell. “Photos of old schools, old houses, street scenes, banks… Maps. People visit The Camden County Historical Society Museum and Library for a variety of reasons, according to its librarian, Bonnie Beth Elwell. Some seek information about their family genealogy and some are there to research some aspect of local history. There is the occasional high school or college student, seeking background for a paper or project. And then there are those researching their house history, particularly, from Collingswood.“Wehave a lot of people from Collingswood doing that due to the fact that there’s a lot of duplexes,” Elwell says. “They want to prove the house was a duplex dating back to a certain time period.”

These days Pomona Hall, built in 1726 and 1788 as part of a 400-acre plantation, is decorated with the furniture of colonial and post-colonial days. Tours of the building outline the inequalities of the time while tracing the story of Quakers, Camden and the Cooper Family. The Society is financed through the generosity of donors, and all of its buildings and services are free to the public. Beyond the research reach of the library – which includes newspapers and various pamphlets and programs dating back to the turn of the last century – the museum houses compelling displays charting the area’s rich history. Among the exhibits currently on display are the ‘Native Americans in Camden Exhibit’, the ‘American Revolution in Camden County Exhibit,’ and a timeline exhibit entitled ‘How Women Won the Vote’. The Native American exhibit was done with the help of the archeologicalings,andmentstraditionalJersey.Bridgeton,tribe,Lenni-LenapeNanticokebasedinNewItincludesgar-andpastpresentdraw-aswellasfinds at the South Camden Waterfront . “They found multiple settlements of Native American people across thousands of years,” says Josh Lisowski, the Society’s Collections and Preservation Director. “The latest was in the 1600s, the earliest was 3,000. And they were virtually right on top of each other.” There are also exhibits around the respective histories of Campbell’s Soup, RCA and Cooper Hospital. The second floor is currently closed amid a redesign that will allow more exhibits and highlight more contributions. Those contributions come from homes, businesses, and estate sales. “People come in every week with another donation,” Elwell says. “We only take things that have something to do with Camden County. And it has to have some value to more than that individual. We’re constantly adding to this.” ■ HISORY fromcontinued 20page PHOTOS BY JAMIE GIAMBRONE 12 Haddon Ave. Haddon Township, NJ 08108 (856) 240-1522 @phidelityrecords We want to buy your records.
