Spring is a time for new beginnings and reflections. In this issue beginnings and memories are exactly what we are looking at. You will meet Ronni Robinson, a local author, who after years of unknowingly struggling with ‘compulsive overeating’, found a process of healing then becoming an author. I found Ronni’s journey inspirational and proud that she is part of the local community. Let’s “cruise” back to the ‘60s, ‘70s with the Hatboro Cruisers. We are looking forward to reminiscing of springs from the past. More local events and information all inside this issue of 19006, the lifestyle magazine made just for Huntingdon Enjoy!Valley!

190066SPRING 2022

Like a scene from American Graffiti, local teens for decades have proudly turned the town of Hatboro into one of the nation’s most infamous spots for cruisin’ classic cars. These “cruisers” who went up and down York Road – in the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s – when teens didn’t have cell phones in their pockets, “met all of their friends in Hatboro and we figured out our weekend plans,” explained Adrienne “Queenie” Fisher, the administrator of the Hatboro Cruisers. She is the proud owner of a 1969 black cherry Chevy Camaro convertible.Today, the revitalized group is going strong and boasts thousands of active members. Typical community-oriented car nights attract 300-400 cars; the big cruise nights in Hatboro bring out more than 1,000 vehicles. “It was always about hanging out, swapping stories, and spending time with friends with a shared interest in shiny and beautiful cars,” explains Fisher, “and while most of the aspects of our lives are dramatically different, that hasn’t changed. It’s like going back in time and reliving great memories.” With all of the choices of entertainment available in our modern world, Fisher, of Warminster, who basks in the fond memories of yesteryear, says that these classic car, truck and bike nights are ideal familyoriented entertainment. “It’s a cruise night with no fee and there is always something fun for the kids and the adults to do at our events,” Fisher explains. “The top three cars receive gift cards, we have awards for the prettiest car, and there areGatheringprizes.” the community and members of the group -- which grew from 10 members to more than 5,000 – “brings back fond memories of the old cars that our parents and grandparents took pride in restoring,” Fisher says. “It’s all about the pride.” Among the upcoming events is the “Summer Cruise Nights-Food Drive” in Hatboro, on May 20, from 5 to 9 p.m. (the third Friday of the month through September). Also, there is the much-anticipated “Hatboro Cruiser’s Cruise” at Palz Taphouse, in Huntingdon Valley on Sunday, May 22. Subsequent Palz Taphouse events are held on the fourth Sunday of the month – weather permitting.Palz Taphouse owner Edwin Beza says the Hatboro Cruisers events have been held at his restaurant on Sundays for some five years because “they are fun for the entire family. Customers say they enjoy the cars and how friendly the car folks are. We find it energetic and a great deal of fun.” Plus, he said, after the isolation of the pandemic, “families definitely want to come out and enjoy one another’s company. This is really good for the community.” Beza is excited that his new deck, located on the County Line Road side of the restaurant, will soon be open, and give his customers and car lovers another place to celebrate this spring and summer. Other local businesses enjoy the cars and their owners as well.

For a while, in the ‘70s, the town of Hatboro stopped “the cruising,” but Fisher and other enthusiasts – with strong support from the Hatboro Chamber of Commerce -- brought it back, and now the frequent car events are as fun-filled, vigorous and as wellattended as ever. The Hatboro Cruisers is also about having a big heart. “Car people,” Fisher says, “are the most caring people you will everThemeet.”cruisers also enjoy giving back to the community. They sponsor a food drive at Hatboro’s York Road and Moreland Avenue, where the items are used to help out the local food pantries, another aspect of the group for which the members are extremely proud. Another mark of the heartfelt members was apparent during COVID-19 (in 2020 and 2021), when there were relatively few car shows. Instead of shutting down, Fisher and her members did a “drive-by event” for local milestone birthdays and nursing home residents, including a lovely 102-year-old woman named Edna, who was thrilled to see a 1912 car with an Edna license plate, named for the car’s beloved mother. “There was a little girl, Courtney, going in for a bone marrow transplant and we had more than 1,000 cars drive by her house and raised money to help the family with its hospital bills,” Fisher proudly recalls. “For us, it’s about whatever we can do to help the community,” she added. “When we can drive by with a shiny car and someone is waving and has a big smile on his or her face, that is the best.” ■ For more information, visit Hatboro Cruisers on Facebook.

“I was working at the cotton candy machine at my children’s school carnival when my daughter asked for a piece of pizza. I asked her to save the crust for me because I knew she wouldn’t eat it. A short time later I saw her throw her plate away with the pizza crust still on it. I scolded her for throwing it away, and the next thing I knew I had grabbed it out of the trash can and started nibbling on it. When I realized what I had done, I was mortified!”

LifeChronicling as a Compulsive Overeater

On the outside, Ronni Robinson looked like the picture of health, a typical kid who loved riding her bicycle, playing softball and hanging out with her friends. But on the inside, she was hiding an ugly secret … she was obsessed with food.

“I remember racing home from school every Friday because that’s when my mom went grocery shopping and I knew a fresh bag of cookies would be in the bag,” she recalls. Her life revolved around what she was going to eat, where she was going to eat it and how good it was going to make her feel. She spent years eating junk food in secret, spending more time at parties deciding what to eat rather than socializing with friends and, at one point, even scavenging a piece of pizza crust from the trash can to curb her craving.

While she admits she was nervous about exposing her secret in such a public way, the response from her family and friends, as well as others struggling with eating disorders, has been overwhelmingly positive. “I felt very vulnerable putting out this very personal, private, embarrassing information about myself, but I knew in the long run that it could help others who were struggling. Most of my friends who read the book were truly surprised, since I hid my secret so well. But everyone has been extremely supportive,” she Robinsonsaid.is now happy to say she has a normal relationship with food. Instead of going to an event and thinking about what she would have for dessert, she can now socialize with friends and be present, rather than hiding her compulsion to eat. “One of the things I regret the most with the eating disorder was missing out on deepening relationships and friendships because when I was at social events, rather than talking to people, I would be secretly plotting how I was going to get more food and where and when I was going to eat it, instead of truly learning about people and focusing on building relationships,” she says. Another important part of Robinson’s recovery was her new-found passion for triathlons.“I’vealways been an athlete, which is probably one of the things that kept me from gaining weight over the course of my eating disorder. I got involved with a group called A Chance to Heal, which focuses on helping survivors of trauma and abuse heal through connecting the body and mind, and received an email about doing a sprint triathlon. I stepped out of my comfort zone to try it and I was hooked,” she recalls. She went on to compete in dozens of triathlons, including three Ironsmans and four half-Ironmans.“Competing in triathlons helped me put the spotlight on another part of my life, and helped me find a new passion, rather than putting the spotlight on food all of the time,” sheAftersaid. years of endurance training began wearing on her knees and experiencing a serious bike crash, Robinson turned to indoor cycling and discovered yet another passion. She became a certified spinning instructor and now splits her time between teaching spin classes and writing. She’s considering writing another book, a work of fiction this time, and is thinking about becoming a certified coach to help others with compulsive overeating and binge-eating disorders. •• “Out of the Pantry: A Disordered Eating Journey” can be purchased at Amazon.com. Huntingdon Valley’s Collin Gillespie recently completed a brilliant college basketball career. Now, the question is whether Gillespie will be selected in the NBA Draft, June 23 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Anonymous meetings after discovering that her obsession with food for most of her life was actually an eating disorder. “I spent 30 years just gorging myself with food all the time and I had no idea that it was an actual nameable, fixable problem. I just thought I had a sweet tooth and couldn’t control myself,” she says. “One night, at age 40, I was sitting around watching TV and I heard the words ‘compulsive overeater.’ At that point, something just clicked. I started Googling on my computer and came across the Overeaters Anonymous website. A bunch of questions popped up and I remember answering yes to almost every one of them. That’s when I realized that I was a compulsive overeater.” That discovery started Robinson on her road to recovery, which included going to OA meetings, therapy and a new-found passion for competing in triathlons. “It was mind blowing to find out I wasn’t alone in my obsession with food,” says Robinson. “I started seeing a therapist who helped me understand that I was an emotional eater with a binge-eating disorder. Therapy also led me to discover that it was my childhood, which was in fact dysfunctional, that caused me to turn to food as a copingToday, mechanism.”Robinson considers herself fully recovered and is using her experience to help others struggling with similar issues. Early in her recovery she blogged for about a year anonymously to talk about everything she had been going through and received tremendous support online from people in similar situations. She eventually went on to share her experiences through a number of published essays and ultimately decided to write her own memoir, “Out of the Pantry: A Disordered Eating Journey,” which was published in 2020. “One of the things that was very helpful during my recovery was reading books by other people who had recovered from eating disorders and had similar stories,” says Robinson. “It was very inspiring and helped me to see that I could recover as well. With my background as a writer, I always knew I had a book in me, and this seemed like a natural outlet for me to pay my recovery forward. It was also very cathartic to write the book and put it all out there.”
