The

seasonal 08108 has returned for the Fall season to bring in cool new places to discover and delicious new menus to taste throughout Collingswood.

This season, the Collingswood Rotary Club is spreading kindness and smiles throughout the community through multiple charitable efforts (Pg. 6). Some of the events the club puts on to raise money also help to bring the community together including pet inoculations and delivering turkeys for the less fortunate.

Another community gathering place is new to residents of the 08108 thanks to the pandemic. Hub 868 (Pg. 12) has created a positive and productive environment for those who are still working from home or who might need an additional space to work. With conference rooms and white bards, there is plenty of space for new ideas.

For residents looking to discover something new, this edition dives into the history and beauty of Hurley Mansion, now known as the Rite Auditorium (Pg. 20). While the tours help to show the beauty and history, it can also shed light on some spooky tales of old.

For those looking for more hidden

treasures, the Collingswood Clover Market has trinkets galore (Pg.8). Jamie Long started the market years ago to give residents an opportunity to fall in love with new and exciting things every time the market comes to town.

After seeking out all the adventures Collingswood has to offer, residents can re-energize at Bistro Di Marino with their delectable seasonal menu (Pg. 10). With options from chicken, fish and veal dishes along with pasta aplenty, there is no shortage of choices for everyone.

This fall in Collingswood has so much to offer for all walks of life. Adventures and treats come in all shapes and sizes and this edition of 08108 touches on a bit of everything.

The Collingswood ROTARY CLUB

Any organization that dedicates its existence for the betterment of mankind deserves not only recognition, but support. A smile can go a long way and a helping hand can go even further. One organization that has made an impressive impact on a global scale goes by the name of Rotary International, started in 1905 by Paul Harris in Chicago, Illinois. With a worldwide membership of 1.4 million Rotarians and over 46,000 member clubs in existence, it’s clear that the mission to provide community services, promote integrity and advance goodwill are alive and well. You don’t have to live halfway across the world to feel a direct impact from Rotary International if you happen to be a resident of Collingswood, New Jersey – because they’re in your backyard.

The International Rotary Club’s local chapter, known as the Collingswood Rotary Club, was established in 1928. Its current president, Ronald Woods, leads the humanitarian efforts of the Collingswood area having been a member since the 1990s. Another prominent member since 2006 is Scott Gutman, former president of the club and owner of SGI Wealth Management. As a proud member of 15 years, Gutman has been in charge of not only providing helping hands to Collingswood citizens, but membership enrollment as well, which is a vital aspect of ensuring community success. According to Gutman, there is a four-way test used as a moral code of conduct for Rotarians.

“Is it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it bring goodwill and better friendships? And will it be beneficial to all concerned?” he says. Regular Rotary Clubs require at least 20 members, but a unique alternative, called a Satellite club, allows club formation with only eight members who may not have the time to meet weekly or want to experience multiple forms of club organization. A regular club serves as a support system and sponsor to Satellite clubs. Once satellite clubs hit 20 members, the option to remain or grow into a standalone club is available.

Gutman, who reflected on the popularity of Satellite clubs. “We saw an increase in membership after the pandemic,” he continued on, a feat he’s very proud of and hopes encourages more participants.

The Collingswood Rotary Club serves its community in many creative and fun ways.

Local events such as pet inoculations, volunteering at the Cathedral Kitchen and Poker Night at the Community Center ensure the health and financial needs of the public are met. Poker night in particular was described as a “success,” by Gutman, and “funds high school scholarships,” which the club frequently offers along with the presentation of boys and girls state awards. Recent events include the renovation of the snack bar in Woodlynne and cleaning up Newton Creek to provide the pollution free environment everyone deserves. The generosity doesn’t end there, one annual event in particular is the gift that keeps on giving—Thanksgiving Baskets.

“It’s one of my favorite events,” says Gutman. A time during the Thanksgiving holiday where less fortunate families are provided turkeys and other foods at local churches. One major influence within the

The continuation of such good deeds relies on a steady number of new and ambitious members whether it’s via a Satellite club or a traditional club. “We’re looking for new members,” says Gutman. For more than 20 years, the Clover Market has been popping up in local communities, providing opportunities for shoppers to support small businesses and a platform for vendors to showcase their work and develop relationships with their customers.

Founded in 2010 by Janet Long, the market was designed to provide a venue for independent artisans and antique dealers to connect with customers who love to shop small. The market was modeled after European open-air markets that combined antiques and vintage items with original art and handmade products.

“The Market’s name, four leaf clover logo and ‘Lucky Finds for the Home’ tagline were inspired by the notion of a unique, one-ofa-kind find,” says Long. “Our mission is to amplify and support small businesses who bring creativity and uniqueness to our world through their high-quality, handmade products, along with carefully selected antiques and collectibles. We are dedicated to showcasing beautiful, timeless products from people carving their own creative path.”

Long’s inspiration for the market came from her passion for going to flea markets and antique shops and finding unique handmade items for herself and others.

“At the time when I started the Market there really wasn’t anything similar in our area that combined antiques and vintage items with original art and handmade products,” says Long.

“I thought it would be a great idea to combine both of these elements into one show and give people an opportunity to meet the artists face to face. I modeled Clover after some of the European open-air markets I had visited during my travels.”

Long started her career in advertising, went back to school to get an MBA, worked as a marketing director for a consulting firm and spent some time running an interior design firm with a colleague. Long’s background in marketing, design and project management have served her well in growing the business from one small outdoor market in Ardmore, Pa., to biannual outdoor popup markets in Chestnut Hill, Bryn Mawr, Kennett Square and Collingswood, in addition to popup holiday events.

“I love learning new things and making

connections with people,” says Long. “I am

When COVID first hit, it drastically changed the workplace.

Suddenly, people were performing their jobs from home and many still have that option now years later. However, while plenty of employees may still be thrilled to skip long, tedious commutes, some have learned their home is not the best place to get work done either. Needy pets, screaming kids, and lack of technological tools can make remote work a challenge. But for those looking for a happy medium between their home and the office, there are shared workspaces.

Maudi Silver-Mallemat is the co-owner of one such space in Collingswood, Hub:868, that just opened for business in February. However, by a strange coincidence, the project had actually been in development since before COVID even happened. By the time Hub:868 opened its doors, it had become a solution to people looking for a remote workspace – that wasn’t their home.

“Prior to COVID, the data for coworking and shared workspaces showed it was on a

steady incline,” said Silver-Mallemat when asked about the creation of the project. She explained how COVID threw a wrench into some plans as the world figured out what to make of the situation, but once people got accustomed to the setup, they embraced remote work in even bigger numbers.

“So now that people have been working remotely for so long and it’s clear that their jobs can be done remotely—or hybrid to some extent—people just don’t want to go back to work,” said Silver-Mallemat. “But they also don’t necessarily want to continue working from home and the temporary setups they’ve created.”

You might think a coffee shop or library could solve the issue, but even those are not

ideal. Suppose you want to have a meeting with your entire team, would you really want to try and cram everyone into Dunkin’ or Starbucks? And most libraries don’t have areas for the public to show their presentation on a screen. Whereas Hub:868 is prepared with all the amenities a working professional could ask for.

Bistro di Marino highlights the meatball, offering a traditional version with veal pork and beef, or a version stuffed with smoked mozzarella cheese. Other options include delicious shrimp pancetta, burrata wrapped in prosciutto and fried artichokes served with a gorgonzola cream sauce.

“The restaurant has been open for 18 years, and there are a lot of ‘home runs’ on the menu that have been around for years because customers love them,” says Marino. One of these dishes is named after Marino’s mother, the Capellini Bambina – angel hair pasta with fresh spinach, sun dried tomatoes, shrimp and crab in a light garlic white wine sauce.

Offered as an appetizer, entree, or family style Bistro di Marino offers award-winning potato gnocchis with various toppings and sauces that you have to try. From a classic gnocchi pomodoro to a decadent gnocchi con lobster, the choices feel endless. If you can’t decide, the Gnocchi Misto gives you the option of choosing three different gnocchis.

In addition to gnocchi options, there are several other pasta dishes including a fresh pappardelle bolognese and a linguine clam. The variety of entree choices will certainly make choosing difficult, with chicken, fish and veal dishes to decide from.

This fall, Bistro di Marino will also feature a seasonal menu. “We do seasonal menus every year and it’s something our return customers really look forward to,” he said. Although it hasn’t been finalized yet, some of the main dishes will feature pumpkin ravioli in a sage brown butter sauce and a butternut squash gnocchi. The menu will put you right in the mood for fall, and if you aren’t quite ready to let go of summer, the Jersey peach dessert will remain on the menu through September.

“All of our locations were chosen for their thriving, walkable downtown areas where we had strong support from the local business districts and an interest from the community and local business owners in bringing a curated popup event to town,” says Long.

“Collingswood has been a wonderful location for us, due to its enthusiastic customer base and supportive business community.

There are so many great events and festivals held in the Borough each year, and there’s a wonderful level of support for the creative arts. I’m originally from North Jersey, so I loved being able to bring the Market to a New Jersey location.”

Silver-Mallemat explained how the other companies that share the space with you can be an advantage.

“It offers all of the amenities that you would look for in a workspace or in an office, but we add something different in that it’s a community of professionals from varied occupations,” said Silver-Mallemat. “So we have more differences in what people are coming in to do. Which adds to a more vibrant, interesting, collaborative community.”

For people working in the open sections, it can provide an opportunity to network with other companies or bounce ideas off people doing similar work.

On a typical week the hub has around 10 teams of varying sizes that come by to use the space, but Hub:868 is open to everyone regardless of what your needs are. If you just need their amenities for one time only, you can buy a day pass to use the nearly 3,000 square foot space. Or if you know you would use a shared workspace with more regularity, you can get a membership at a full time or part time level. You can call to book in advance or walk in as needed.

And it is not just office workers who can benefit from the services. This Fall, in the same building as the workspaces, they will also offer Hub: Kitchen for those in the food services industry. This is a space for amateur

chefs to gain experience, or for experienced cooks to try out making a new dish. Hub: Kitchen comes equipped with a six burner range, two ovens, refrigerators, freezers, a prep station, cookware and a three basin sink.

“Maybe they are just doing a small batch production of something special that they make and they don’t necessarily need a full time kitchen, they would be able to come in and use this space here for the production of their food,” said Silver-Mallemat. She also explained that having a restaurant requires business acumen, which makes being alongside Hub: 868 a great complement for chefs. “As they tend their market and grow, we can support them by providing business related services and professional development so they can eventually have their own brick and mortar and go on to have and run a successful business outside of here.”

What excites Silver-Mallemat is seeing the intermingling of people from so many different professions in a shared workspace. She talked about how on a single day there can be creatives, programmers and executives all working in the same proximity at Hub: 868. She feels it really shows off the richness of the Collingswood community and demonstrates that the area is embracing this idea. And as someone who is new to this herself, Silver-Mallemat is relieved to see that when she reached out, the community was reaching back for this.

We’re also in a small niche community. Coworking traditionally has been well-received in cities and larger urban settings. So bringing it into a smaller town like Collingswood requires a lot more education of the community— which I fully embrace.”

The yellow brick building on White Horse Pike is over 170 years old and carries tales, time and maybe… a former lingering owner.

Today, the mansion is a wonderful place to catch one of your favorite local plays, bands, or comedians. But the Hurley Mansion, also known as the Scottish Rite Auditorium, has some stories to tell according to David J. Herman Jr, secretary of the Scottish Rite Masons of Southern Valley. Herman has been working at the Rite Auditorium since 2002.

It’s not fully clear when Hurley mansion was used as a sanitarium for unwed mothers, but we do know at one point it was operated by Dr. William Albert Davis. As the various owners of the mansion changed between 1850 to the early 1900s, William Hurley eventually got his hands on the estate. The successful furniture chain store owner purchased the property in 1909 and it has been reported that Teddy Roosevelt stayed at the mansion on at least two occasions.

Unfortunately, Hurley passed away suddenly while on vacation in 1928. His two sons convinced their mother, Sara Hurley, to sell the property to the Scottish Rite Valley of Southern New Jersey who had recently begun to obtain an increase in membership and funds and decided it was time to root themselves. So, an agreement was made between The Scottish Rite Masons and Sara and in 1930, the masons bought the 80-year-old mansion for $125,000.

In 2003, the Borough of Collingswood signed a 50-year lease with the Scottish Rite Masons. Major renovations took place to accommodate live entertainment in the auditorium and for the general public to visit. The property also hosts weddings and other intimate events.

Renovations, modifications, building expansion and seasons of ‘freshening up’, are ongoing. Nevertheless, the Masons made sure to preserve as much of the white mansion as they could. The mansion is still home to a few furniture pieces, windows and other inner pieces which have been honored since the late 1800s. There are at least two fireplaces that have been preserved and

Along with these few pieces from the original mansion, a large mirror, somewhat like a decorative foyer mirror, also stands by a window on the second floor. Legend has it, the late Mr. Hurley has been seen in this very mirror over the years, after his passing. Herman has stated that quite a few people have claimed to have seen an old man dressed very formally, wandering around the mirror and the building occa-

sionally.

“When I saw him (Mr. Hurley), he was in front of the stained glass window in this hallway,” said Hurley. Allison Klein, who works in the box office, has also reported seeing Mr. Hurley wandering around the mansion.

The Hurley Mansion has roots, and is still flourishing in the present. Monthly dinners for the Scottish Rite Masons and business meetings are held regularly at the mansion and performances from Chris Botti and Joe

10/18 Town Forum (7pm, Community Center):

Twice yearly Collingswood hosts a Town Forum. Every resident and business owner is encouraged to come. There’s no formal agenda, no RSVP, no sign-in – just an opportunity to bring your questions, concerns or support to your elected officials or even just hear about what’s happening in town.

10/22 PTA Fall Festival (12pm-4pm): Get into the Fall spirit and support Collingswood PTAs at the annual Fall Festival at the Knight Park Pavilion. There will be countless games and fun for kids, and food galore!

10/22 Haunted Hayride (5:30pm-8:30pm): The Collingswood Haunted Hayride returns for one night only on Saturday, October 22 from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm in Knight Park, located on Collings Ave. This evening of scares takes kids and adults on a spooky trip aboard a tractor through haunted Knight Park.

11/25 Tree Lighting: Tree Lighting at Collingswood Borough Hall. Santa descends from atop Borough Hall by way of the Collingswood Fire Dept.’s ladder truck –just in time for the official Tree Lighting Ceremony. Choral groups will sing as the town tree is lit up with twinkling lights.

11/26 Holiday Parade and Small Business Saturday: The 2022 Collingswood Holiday Parade will be back on Haddon Avenue on Saturday, November 26 beginning at 10 am. Named Best Main Street Experience by South Jersey Magazine, the parade features lively seasonal entertainment, including marching bands, dancers, holiday characters, giants on stilts, floats, mummers, sports mascots and live music. The parade will begin at Zane Avenue at 10 am and continue to West Linden Avenue, through the heart of historic Collingswood.
