5 Ideas to help you move with kids!

A

s a mom of two boys, and recently going through a move myself, I understand how tough it can be for children to transition to a new house. As I was going through my own move, I was looking for ways to make it easier on them. After trying many different ideas, here are the top 5 things I found the most helpful to make the move go as smooth as possible: 1. Stickers on moving boxesWhen we packed up the boy’s room, we included them in the packing process. After packing the boxes, we had them put their favorite stickers all over the boxes, so they were excited to pack! When unpacking, they were able to search for their boxes, which continued the excitement for the move! 2. Unpack their room firstWe unpacked their rooms first, which made them so much more comfortable. This allowed us to unpack the rest of the house without worrying as much about the kids. 3. Introduce new local places- Find a new restaurant, ice cream shop or park near your new house. Visit this

S

spot with your kids before you move so they know there are exciting places near their new house! 4. DIY project- Have your kids create a DIY project for their new bedroom! My kids love to paint, so we had them paint a picture for their new bedroom wall. Not only did they enjoy the project, but they also love seeing their painting on the wall every day. 5. Visual countdown- Kids are very visual, so giving them a countdown calendar can prepare them for the big move. We made a special “countdown calendar” for the month of our move, and showed it to the kids every day. After dinner, we would check off the calendar and count down the days until the move! All of these fun ideas really helped my kids transition, and I hope they can help make the move for your little ones a bit more fun and relaxing too! ployees, virtually no paid advertising and operating out of a warehouse rather than a big expensive showroom, she simply does not have the overhead that all the others have and can therefore hit lower price points. How much lower you ask? Shockingly, every mattress in her warehouse is 55 percent to 80 percent lower than regular store prices. Not only has she taken all of the overhead out of buying a mattress, she also eliminated the deceptive advertising, phony sales and high pressure sales tactics that are unfortunately all too common nowadays. “My goal is for my customers to have fun buying a mattress,” Cutry says. “And if

ttention parents. If you have asked yourself, “How do I get my toddler to start talking,” you are in luck. Joyce and Jamie from Speak To Me Kids have teamed up to share some tips to help you help your children start talking. But first, remember to be patient. This will not happen overnight. It takes time and consistency. Plan ahead and sabotage the environment. Why? When a child wants something, he or she will be motivated to talk. Here’s how: rearrange favorite toys and food items. Place them in different bins or on higher shelves. Then, allow your toddler time to notice the

change and ask for help. Expand utterances. Why? To increase your child’s vocabulary and utterance length. Here’s how: Ask choice questions, such as “Do you want the car or the airplane?” Then expand. Here is the blue car. The blue car says beep beep, and so on. Narrate. Why? A child learns language through exposure. The more you talk, the more exposure for your child. Here’s how: Describe an activity as you do it. It can be anything ranging from getting a drink of water to making a sandwich to brushing your teeth and getting ready for bed. Read books.

Why? To further improve language development. Here’s how: When the goal is to get your child to talk, focus on the pictures as opposed to the story. Point out the pictures, describe the pictures, and then ask simple follow-up questions. Remember to take turns. Why? When a child learns to take turns, he or she is learning the back and forth rhythm of communication. Here’s how: Turn-taking comes in many forms- through communication and play. If your child needs help with a toy, wait for him or her to bring you the item. If your child wants to play with the piggy bank, take turns putting coins inside. When he or she wants to play ball, roll the ball back and forth, etc. Parents, follow these tips. Be patient and be consistent. Remember, always take the time to talk! Summer Camp: Our Kids’ Antidote to Pandemic Living by Andy Pritikin

E

ven before 2020, there existed a world-wide outbreak amongst our youth- in technology addiction, social skill deficiency, indoor isolation, and over-parenting. During the pandemic, our kids have been living an increasingly bizarre, unnatural life of screens and quarantines, hybrid schooling (if lucky), and enough fear and disappointment to last them into adulthood. However, in the midst of the insanity, we learned that Summer Camp can become a beacon of hope, a lifeline towing them back to their normal selves. Over 1,000 lucky children, and 250 staff attended Liberty Lake Day Camp in summer 2020. With strict safety guidelines and a modified program, the fundamental essence of camp remained intact: Kids, playing together, mentored by caring staff, and in most cases- outdoors. According to the campers, parents, and staff,

screens, and the internet. • RESILIENCY- Our kids are certainly developing it; experiencing disappointments that will make them stronger. Learning to be brave and confronting challenges and fears are also important facets of resiliency. It’s easier to stay at home and stare at screens but we want our kids to grow up with the kind of courage and “can-do” attitude that our health care, essential workers, and superhero school-teachers have cultivated. • *MENTAL HEALTH* While Summer Camp is widely known for its physical health benefits, it’s no surprise that hospital visits related to mental health have risen dramatically for children and teens. Kids are resilient and bounce back quickly. But a year and a half of stress and anxiety is bound to leave a mark. Extroverted kids are suffering, missing the energy of their peers. Introverted kids may seem to enjoy sitting in their homes, away from life’s normal pres-

alt Disney once said, “Do what you do so well that they will want to see it again and bring their friends.” And bring their friends they do… to Cherry Hill Montessori’s Summer Day Camp, where each day is a new adventure! Operating in our present location for over 30 years with skilled, experienced teachers and certified lifeguards, a low child-to-staff ratio, and a program that offers children new and exciting learning adventures each day, Cherry Hill Montessori’s Summer Day Camp is a wonderful way for your child to spend his or her summer! We are owned and operated by lifelong Cherry Hill residents, which allows us to implement programs and poli-

cies that specialize in the specific needs of our local families. Our four to nine-week Summer Day Camp runs from June 28 – August 27, 2021, and welcomes children ages 3-7. We offer a variety of developmentally appropriate individual and group activities including swimming & sports, arts & crafts, music & movement, Spanish instruction, learning through hands-on exploration, and more! Our trained staff fosters social, emotional, academic and physical development to allow each child to grow independently and confidently, consistent with our Montessori philosophy and traditions. Since our daily swim events are an important part of our Summer Camp Program, all campers must be fully potty

trained. Our one-acre property is conveniently located on Rockhill Road, just one block off of Route 70 West near Interstate 295 in Cherry Hill, with easy access for drop-off and pick-up. In addition to our 6,600 square foot building, our fenced-in yard contains three outdoor playground areas, an in-ground heated swimming pool, and our “Peace Garden,” a shaded space that fosters an appreciation for nature. 2020 was their most meaningful camp experience ever, and an impactful life event. This June, after two compromised school years and everything that’s gone along with it, our children’s need for the benefits of Summer Camp will be even more important: • REAL HUMAN CONNECTION- Zoom and remote learning saved us in so many ways. But there’s NO substitute for real human connection. Making and strengthening relationships while being guided by loving people is what camp is all about. The essence of camp is in the relationships we forge, something we are all lacking and craving. • REACQUAINTING OURSELVES WITH NATUREWhile society has been trapped indoors for the past year, most of the world is in the beautiful OUTDOORS, which fills our soul with joy. From picture perfect days, to “liquid sunshine” washouts- it’s REAL living- the way we’ve lived for thousands of years, until the advent of central air, video

here are many ways for families to express and feel the joys of Jewish living. Throughout the year, our students have opportunities to participate in hands-on Jewish experiences with their families, applying the skills they have gained with the curriculum in our classrooms. As we work to help our families discover meaning and purpose in how they educate children at TBS, moments of religious celebration help form relationships that will engage families in our community. Our families feel the joys of Jewish living as they are engaged in dynamic Shabbat services that are upbeat and musical which allow our families to celebrate Shabbat several times a month on Saturday mornings and Friday evenings. Prayer, especially on Shabbat, needs to be exciting, engaging, spiritual and fun. TBS’s inclusive Family Services provide

a welcoming environment which nurtures children with special needs and their families. Visual signs and prompts, gesturing, movement, and a sequenced schedule to ease transitioning throughout the service are incorporated to accommodate a wide range of students’ unique learning styles. Together in this family-friendly setting, we sing, debate, experience drama, stories, laugh and enjoy our warm community in a relaxed environment. Our families feel the joys of Jewish living when they gain appreciation and feel the rhythm of Jewish music as they make joyful noise with the TBS community. These beautiful moments are found singing with Cantor Cohen, listening to the sounds of Alex Weinberg’s guitar as they are warmly greeted at each session, or singing together with Rabbi Peltz and Rabbi Wexler at Family Shabbat Dinners. Parents

stand with their child while singing blessings and songs as they experience the warm connection that Shabbat creates as a community. Our families discover the tools they need to feel part of congregational life at TBS through learning that integrates student experiences in the classroom with the immersion that can only happen together as a family. From praying and making music to Shabbat dinners and familycentered programs, learning is a lifelong process. We look forward to partnering with you on that journey as we nurture our children to grow up loving Jewish living. continued from page 5 sures - but need social interaction just as much. Why can Summer Camps be successful during a pandemic? Good camps breed creative adaptability, and get things done- Always have. How do you get a group of 3rd grade boys to listen? What do we do about the incoming storm? The bus is running late, animals got into the supplies, no electricity in the kitchen, kid pooped in the pool… Camp people don’t complain- WE FIGURE IT OUT, and make it happen. Last summer, we were able to facilitate 99% of what we normally do at camp- A little different than usual, but accomplished with smiles and appreciation. Camp offers kids the unique opportunity to step back into a simpler time, with no internet connection needed- out of our homes, playing with other kids. Summer camps have proven that it can be done safely, even under the most challenging circumstances. Make Your Fitness Victory a Triumph Over Cancer

W

e know that healthy habits can affect a person’s risk for cancer and other diseases including heart disease and diabetes. This is because getting enough physical activity and eating healthy foods can help our bodies work as well as possible. And there is growing evidence that cancer survivors who have these healthy habits have better quality of life and might have better treatment outcomes. The American Cancer Society recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity activity each week. Moderate activities make you breathe as hard as you would during a brisk walk. Vigorous activities use your large muscle groups and make your heartbeat faster, make you breathe faster and deeper, and make you sweat. As we challenge ourselves to eat healthy and get active, let’s help reduce cancer risks not only for ourselves but also for our community. You can make your miles more meaningful by joining the American Cancer Society 49th annual BikeA-Thon Bridge to the Beach on Sunday, September 19, 2021.

This DetermiNation program will help you achieve your personal fitness goals and change the course of cancer forever. The ride features four startpoints with six route options (including a century route) giving you the freedom to ride a short, medium or long distance. Or go virtual and set your own miles to complete at your pace. With access to professional training, an unparalleled community of support, and inspiration every step of the way, the American Cancer Society will help make your ride a triumph over cancer. When you join Bike-A-Thon you’re not just participating in an endurance event. You’re joining a community of cancer fighters, who for nearly 50 years have pushed themselves to help save lives from cancer. Every pedal pushes us closer to breakthrough research and provides those in need access to a 24/7 cancer helpline. Together, through the fundraising efforts and dedication of our cyclists and volunteers, we are fighting cancer smarter, better and harder than we ever have before.
