or over a year now our children have lived in a world that requires mask wearing. For infants and toddlers, as well as children with speech and language disorders, masks represent an obstacle in their development. This has become evident in the drastic increase in the need for speech and language services many therapy offices are seeing right now. Masks not only impact our children’s development in regards to speech, language development but also in regards to social emotional development. At the early age of just 8 months old babies begin to shift their attention from caregiver’s eyes to their mouth and begin lip reading. This aids in their ability to start understanding language and facial cues. Children under 12 years old still rely on facial cues when communicating with adults and peers. With the ability to only see part of one’s face, linguistic signals that are critical for communication are taken away. Children with speech sound disorders rely on seeing one’s mouth to help them imitate the accurate production of speech sounds. Masks decrease sound decibels which will make it more difficult to understand speech as well as hide one’s articulators (lips, jaw, tongue) that are critical for modeling.

Kings Highway in Audubon. The gaming space is open Thursdays and Fridays through August, with specific dates for each of the games -- bridge the
first, third, and fifth Thursdays; mah jongg the first, third, and fifth Fridays; canasta the second and fourth Fridays, and pinochle the second and fourth Thursdays. The in-person game sessions run 10 am-12 pm, cost $8/person, and are by reservation only. Rather play from the comfort of your own home? Game Friendzy also offers virtual gaming and learning options via the free internet programs Zoom and Shark Bridge. Casual, supervised online pickup bridge games are available three times weekly -- Tuesdays, 10-11:30 am or 3:30-5 pm, and Wednesdays, 6:30-8 pm. The fee is $5/player/session. The Benefits of Biking to School:

or years, studies have shown that kids of all ages that bike to school, have a number of advantages than the kids that take the bus or car pool. Children that ride bikes or walk to school are able to concentrate more efficiently on their daily tasks. This concentration can last longer well into the day. The “Mass Experiment 2012” project examined the connection between concentration, diet and exercise among 20,000 school-aged children aged 5 to 19. This study and numerous other clinical studies have found that riding to school not only greatly improves learning, but health, physical and social skills. It has also shown that children that ride bikes to school have a stronger connection to the community, as well as improved independence, along with better family bonding. result of the additional three percent more time of moderate to rigorous physical activity, which can equate to an extra 24 minutes of activity per day. This contributes to riding where children have sustained high activity levels throughout the day, reducing obesity and improved bone structure. Studies are also beginning to show that exposure to nature and free outdoor play can reduce stress and relieve ADHD symptoms. Children that ride bikes to school are also helping to save the planet. In doing so, they are improving the air quality and reducing carbon monoxide emissions from buses and cars. here are many ways for families to express and feel the joys of Jewish living. Throughout the year, our students have opportunities to participate in hands-on Jewish experiences with their families, applying the skills they have gained with the curriculum in our classrooms. As we work to help our families discover meaning and purpose in how they educate children at TBS, moments of religious celebration help form relationships that will engage families in our community. Our families feel the joys of Jewish living as they are engaged in dynamic Shabbat services that are upbeat and musical which allow our families to celebrate Shabbat several times a month on Saturday mornings and Friday evenings. Prayer, especially on Shabbat, needs to be exciting, engaging, spiritual and fun. TBS’s inclusive Family Services provide a welcoming environment which
nurtures children with special needs and their families. Visual signs and prompts, gesturing, movement, and a sequenced schedule to ease transitioning throughout the service are incorporated to accommodate a wide range of students’ unique learning styles. Together in this family friendly setting, we sing, debate, experience drama, stories, laugh and enjoy our warm community in a relaxed environment. Our families feel the joys of Jewish living when they gain appreciation and feel the rhythm of Jewish music as they make joyful noise with the TBS community. These beautiful moments are found singing with Cantor Cohen, listening to the sounds of Alex Weinberg’s guitar as they are warmly greeted at each session, or singing together with Rabbi Peltz and Rabbi Wexler at Family Shabbat Dinners. Parents stand with their child while singing blessings and songs as
they experience the warm connection that Shabbat creates as a community. Our families discover the tools they need to feel part of congregational life at TBS through learning that integrates student experiences in the classroom with the immersion that can only happen together as a family. From praying and making music to Shabbat dinners and family-centered programs, learning is a lifelong process. We look forward to partnering with you on that journey as we nurture our children to grow up loving Jewish living. ■
