Your Student Can Be Ready for the New School Year!

N

ow, more than ever, it is time for students to not only learn, but to catch up. We all know that the last couple of school years have been less than ideal. Students who are entering fourth grade, for example, have missed much of first grade, and in second grade, a lot was lost due to remote-in personremote-in person, etc. These formative years are when a student goes from learning to read to reading to learn. Having intermittent in person instruction since the 2018-2019 school year has caused many students to fall behind. Since this year’s teacher must complete the curriculum for the current grade, there is less opportunity to catch up who is behind. These gaps exist at every grade level. That is where Huntington can help! For 45 years, Huntington Learning Center has been the leader in supplemental education, fulfilling our mission

statement; to give every student the best education possible! Our four step approach begins with a comprehensive Academic Evaluation; creation of a Personalized Plan; Customized Learning; and Communication of Progress, to parents and teachers (with permission). This approach yields amazing results, an average growth of over 2 academic years, in just three months!! For students preparing for college, the pandemic has also created challenges. They also have missed out on “normal” school years. In many cases, they are less ready for critical entrance tests, such as the SAT and ACT than ever before. Huntington can help. With Personalized Instruction and Proven Results (229 points average SAT growth and 5.4 ACT), we can prepare your teen for college and help qualify for scholarships. please see STUDENTD, page 9

Dungeons & Dragons

tranger Things – the Netflix cultural phenomenon that continues to draw record audiences in its latest season this summer (and to which I am not ashamed to give an unsolicited plug!) – Flash, Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon, That 70s Show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Freaks & Geeks, what do all of these shows have in common? Young people coming together to socialize and express themselves creatively through a fantastic, unlimited, cooperative, fantasy roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons (affectionately referred to, “D&D”), and which game ultimately makes and strengthens friendships, and develops personal character. Worlds and in-game characters develop and grow the longer people play. In- and out-of-game skills develop through in-

game created experiences. Some of you may be wondering what exactly is D&D? D&D is a fantasy roleplaying game where a group of 3 to 7 people create characters who will then operate as a team, guided by a Dungeon Master (or “DM”) who knows or has created the world and the overarching plot for the players. The DM sets the scene, and players attempt to complete quests and solve mysteries. By working collaboratively and strategically, the players use the unique skills of the characters they have created to gather information, navigate and map new terrain, towns, castles, and dungeons, solve world problems, and ultimately emerge heroically victorious. We immerse our character-selves in fantastic scenarios and work our way through challenges. I

started playing D&D in the mid-1970’s shortly after its creation. Some of my best memories are role playing my healer when saving the rest of the group from sure defeat and death at the hands of some powerful villain. Players learn (sometimes the hard way) that the most successful groups are composed of a variety of character types: fighter, healer, magic user, bard, just to name a few. As the story develops, your party must track supplies, money, you must find shelter, transportation, allies and information. You need to track your health and ensure you get rest. D&D isn’t limited to the game. Some players will make their characters’ clothing, players build terrains, and, my personal favorite, paint figures used to represent our characters during play. D&D develops many real world skills like cooperation and teamwork, strategic thinking, problem solving, quick thinking, decision-making, math, mapping, money management, forging ahead in the face of difficult or seemingly impossible odds, and gracefully accepting the consequences of your decisions and actions – in short – skills necessary for developing thoughtful leaders, which I think we can all agree are in high need. t Mulford Dance Studio, we offer Dance and Theater! The three dance tracks are recital track, non-recital track courses and dance company track. We are excited about our new partnership with Standing Ovations Theater Company. Full productions of Broadway musicals are produced in our theater camps and presented on stage at various venues. This summer featured Aladdin, Newsies Jr, and Broadway Jr Review. New and exciting musicals will be featured this upcoming season. We specialize in classes for ages 6 and under, offering a few options, including the popular All By Myself for ages 2 to 3 who want to try class alone like the big kids. Dance with Me [parent/child] is popular, too. We offer adult dance classes. Class size is kept to approximately an 8-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio for our younger classes allowing for individual sattention. Building a strong rapport beytween instructors and students is very yimportant so that the child feels safe,

n

confident and is able to be comfortable to take corrections. Especially with the 6 and under, we take care to have regular meetings to go over classroom ideas and curriculum updates. Our studio is also an award-winning studio. Although we only compete a couple times a year, we take pride in our dancers and teachers’ accomplishments. We use competition as one of our guides to be sure we stay current. Competition encourages dancers to push themselves. A successful dance education requires qualified, motivated instructors who know how to develop each dancer based on age and ability. Our teachers are highly trained and excited to teach. We are also excited about our Fairytale Ballet classes! Come see what it’s all about. Open House for New Students August 4th 5-8pm for our 2022-2023 Season. South Jersey Hebrew Sunday School A Rare Find

W

hen looking for a Hebrew school for your child, you want the obvious: an excellent education, seasoned educators, a family-like culture, and of course, you want your child to have fun. South Jersey Hebrew Sunday School is all of that and more! SJHSS has been serving the community for over 40 years. The school is unique in that it is not affiliated with a synagogue, which enables the cost to be kept much lower than traditional synagogue-run Hebrew schools. Class sizes are kept small in order to maintain an optimum learning environment. Several classes have aides that assist with all aspects of the classroom activity and are able to give one-on-one help, as needed. All students are welcome, including those that may require more support in academic or social areas. Starting in Kindergarten, children can begin their Judaic education and continue until they complete seventh grade. However, students are welcome to begin any time during their schooling. The curriculum, which is covered during the 10:00 AM - 12:15 PM sessions on Sunday mornings, spans learning the Hebrew alphabet and words, prayers, bible stories, history, current events, holidays, ethics, and the Holocaust. The students learn all of this, in addition to their prayers and torah portions, in order to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. They are also responsible for completing a project and performing some type of community service. South Jersey Hebrew Sunday School has a cantor that works with the Bar and Bat Mitzvah students on a regular basis.

Additionally, we have a rabbi affiliated with our school. With the assistance of a strong parent volunteer group, SJHSS holds a Passover seder each year, a yearly Purim carnival, a traditional Hanukkah celebration, as well as other family-centered

here are many ways for families to express and feel the joys of Jewish living. Throughout the year, our students have opportunities to participate in hands-on Jewish experiences with their families, applying the skills they have gained with the curriculum in our classrooms. Moments of religious celebration help form relationships that will engage families in our community, as we work to help families discover meaning and purpose in how they educate children at TBS. TBS families feel the joys of Jewish living as they have the opportunity to celebrate Shabbat several times a month on Saturday mornings and Friday evenings in dynamic services that are upbeat and musical. Prayer, especially on Shabbat, needs to be exciting, engaging, spiritual and fun. TBS’s inclusive Family Services provide a welcoming environment which nurtures children with special needs and their families. Visual signs and prompts, gesturing, movement, and a sequenced schedule to ease transitioning throughout the service are incorporated to accommodate a wide range of students’ unique learning

styles. Together in this family-friendly setting, we sing, debate, experience drama, stories, laugh and enjoy our warm community in a relaxed environment. Our families feel the joys of Jewish living as they gain appreciation and feel the rhythm of Jewish music making joyful noise with the TBS community. These beautiful moments are found singing with Cantor Cohen, listening to the sounds of Alex Weinberg’s guitar, or singing together with Rabbi Peltz and Rabbi Wexler at Family Shabbat Dinners. Parents stand with their child while singing blessings and songs as they experience the warm connection that Shabbat creates as a community.

Tips From South Jersey Window Tinting

nstalling films on the interior windows of your home may not be at the top of your home-makeover “todo” list, but South Jersey Window Tinting has several good reasons why homeowners should consider this a priority. South Jersey Window Tinting believes in the, “Block the Sun, Not the View” concept. As one of the area’s largest contractors of window films, South Jersey Window Tinting has more than three decades of experience and knowledge in the importance of Window Film. Here are some tips why window tinting is essential: Why should people seriously consider investing in window tinting for their home? “Window film is great for heat and glare reduction, while also preventing the fading of furniture, paintings, wallpaper, etc. We also offer safety film to protect from glass breakage and intruders.” How does putting film on the windows reduce energy costs?

“By installing window film, you provide your windows with an extra layer of protection. Window film insulates glass surfaces, which reduces heating costs in the Winter and cooling costs in the Summer.” Talk a little bit about how your product provides protection from the sun? “This is the latest nanotechnology film that is applied to the interior of the existing glass, which protects you and your home from harmful UV Rays”. How much does it cost? “Pricing is job specific. Call or email us to receive a FREE estimate. We run several pricing incentives throughout the year...We have one going on now!” What’s involved in this installation? “Jobs vary from one to the next. Our experienced installers will go over everything with you from start to finish”. With most people spending more time at home, dealing with excessive glare and the need for privacy has become a priority. Ask the experts at South Jersey Window Tinting for suggestions!

Thinking about Auto Tinting? Our products block out 99.9% of UV rays to improve skin health and privacy. Our films are approved by the American Cancer Society. We are South Jersey’s #1 Auto Tinting company since 1985! Concerned about break-ins in our communities? Turn burglary into attempted burglary with Clear Safety Film that can be applied to your existing windows! Safety film strengthens your glass and will hold glass together in the event of an impact. Clear Safety Film is applied directly to the interior window pane which will improve safety, security, and give you peace of mind! Call for a FREE estimate.
