Game Friendzy
A Woman-Owned Business
Most days Bernadette Hennessy May is at Game Friendzy in Cherry Hill
directing a sanctioned bridge game, running a mah jongg ses-
sion, or teaching a pinochle lesson. Or she might be at a public library or community center facilitating game sessions, conducting bridge lessons online
through area adult schools, or hosting a canasta dinner at a local restaurant.
“How lucky am I that I get to play games for a living,” says Hennessy May, one of the 39.6% of women business owners in New Jersey. “I made a career out of things I like to do.”
Hennessy May has a master’s degree in education and a bachelor’s in music. Her creative and eclectic career has included stints as a tech instructor, corporate trainer and documentation specialist, and business owner.
She opened Rhinoceros, an educational toy store in Haddonfield, in 2011, but soon changed the name to Game Friendzy and the focus to experiential, offering game classes, Lego and chess clubs, crafting, sewing lessons, school enrichment programs, and a game library.
In 2019, Game Friendzy moved
to Barclay Farms Shopping Center, where it also became home to the South Jersey Bridge Club.
Game Friendzy moved online during the pandemic, but recently reopened in a sprawling new facility at 7 Carnegie Plaza, near the intersection of Church and Springdale roads.
The new space features free parking, airy rooms, a kitchenette, and complimentary coffee and snacks, along with a full roster of games, lessons, special events, and a board game library.
Offerings include social and competitive bridge games and mah jongg, canasta, pinochle and Dungeons & Dragons sessions. Also, online and in-person bridge lessons, plus “learn to play in a day” meets for each of the games and special events such as an annual mah jongg party.
The facility is also available to rent for birthday parties, family
gatherings, games nights, corporate team-building events, and camp visits.
“My focus is on family and community,” says Hennessy May, who runs Game Friendzy with assistance of three other entrepreneurial women – her mother, sister, and daughter.
“We offer a welcoming space that encourages socialization opportunities through brain-engaging games, activities, and crafts,” she says.
“Our goal is to develop a community of lifelong learners where trying something new is encouraged and not knowing how to do something is an opportunity to explore and learn.”

How can Therapy Help me?
While it can be helpful to speak to family and friends and
get their input and advice; a therapist can offer an objective perspective on things. A number of benefits are available from participating in behavioral health treatment. Therapists can provide support, problem-solving skills, and enhanced coping strategies for issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, unresolved childhood issues, grief, stress management, and body image issues. Many people also find that psychotherapists can be a tremendous asset to working on personal growth, interpersonal relationships, family concerns, marriage issues, and daily stressors. Some of the benefits available from therapy include:

• Developing skills for improving your relationships
• Finding resolution to the issues or concerns that led you to seek therapy
• Learning new ways to cope
with stress and anxiety
• Managing anger, grief, depression, and other emotional pressures

Ashley decided to make a career change from her ten years
as a pediatric emergency room nurse over a decade ago. She joined Victory in 2008 and went on to earn her AIF (Accredited Investment Fiduciary) professional designation from the Center for Fiduciary Studies. She was attracted to come work with her father at Victory because there were so many similarities that she saw between nursing and acting as a fiduciary financial advisor. The principles of educating, establishing trust, and always putting her client’s best interests ahead of her own helped to make this a smooth and exciting transition.
Ashley has worked to help make a difference in her community by organizing an annual children’s coat drive to distribute directly to kids in need. This year we reached over 350 coats
delivered to local schools. She also serves on the board of a local non-profit Lead The Way who gives assistance to at risk families in our community.
Ashley has been married to her best friend for 19 years and they have three children. When she is not cheering her kids on at their various sport endeavors, Ashley enjoys personal fitness and has completed multiple half marathons and half ironman distance triathlons. She completed her first full ironman distance in 2021 at Ironman Maryland with a time of 16 hours 41 minutes. Ashley also ran the Philadelphia Marathon last November and is looking forward to future races.

WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH
Sweetsboro Pastry Shoppe
The Sweet Smell of Success
Sweetsboro Pastry
Shoppe is an old fashioned neighborhood bakery and that’s just how owner Karen Morrison wants it. “I wanted a bakery reminiscent of the days when people would walk to their local bakery for something sweet instead of going to the supermarket,” says Morrison. After 16 years in business, Morrison and her third generation baker step-brother have mastered making some of the greatest and sweetest creations around and almost everything is made in-house. One of the keys to the success of this community oriented Swedesboro bakery is the talent of its staff. Morrison and her step-brother welcome their staff to collaborate and come up with new ideas for designs. “We also want our customers to bring us their ideas,” says Morrison. This sweet shoppe takes pride in a “non-cookie cut-
ter” philosophy. Customizing a cake for a birthday, graduation, holiday or any occasion one could think of is where Sweetsboro Pastry Shoppe shines!

ResearcHERS
One in three Americans will battle cancer in their lifetime. It can be hard to believe that a single person can make a difference. But funding just one research breakthrough, or one study with the right outcome, could potentially save countless lives.
What is ResearcHERS?
It’s a movement for our community’s most influential leaders who want to drive progress in cancer research and are passionate about gender equality. Its goal is to support the growth and development of female researchers, here in the Greater Philadelphia region and across the country, and provide a platform to raise money and interest in women in science for current and future generations.
Why women researchers?
Women bring diverse and unique perspectives to cancer research, making invaluable contributions and discoveries. However, women are continuously underrepresented in research leadership, are less likely to receive tenure than men, and are
Women’s History Month Networking
more likely to hold lower ranking positions. We want to change this. As a program of the American Cancer Society - a top supporter of women in cancer research - we can sustain the pipeline of talent and engage those in the field to help impact the number of women in leadership roles. But we need your help to do it.
Get Involved!
To raise the funds that fuel women-led cancer research, we look to influential women across the country - community and business leaders ready to fight for a world without cancer. We call these leaders our Ambassadors, and we can never have too many. If you’re passionate about fighting cancer and want to help elevate women in the field of cancer research, nominate yourself today. Know someone else who fits the bill? Nominate them as an Ambassador. And help us save even more lives from cancer.

As women we often face many adversities. With those adversities we can decide to grow through them, or sink into the deep waters of pity.
Today, at the young energy of 35 I can tell you I am thankful for each of those adversities. Without them, I would not be the woman I am today.

into our beautiful space. We give the energies of love & support to every beautiful soul that walks through our doors.
It has been my mission to train my stylists to provide this energetic exchange with each of our guests! This year our mission is to serve more than just hair, lash & brow services. In that mission we will be adding Reiki into our service menu. Reiki in brief description is the “universal life energy.” When Reiki is received it promotes the natural healing process of the body and mind.
I started this journey after going through many trials in my own personal life. Rejection, someone else dictating my confidence and many more adversities. My best advice for anyone looking to do or be more… take the chance! Follow that dream that keeps presenting itself inside of you. When the universe puts this fire in your soul, you are meant to follow it!
