Prep football preview 2017

Thursday, Aug. 31, 2017 • The Hays Daily News

Ellis Railroaders Class 2-1A, District 7 Coach: Craig Amrein (3rd year, 10-9) Last season’s record/ playoff finish: 4-5 Returning starters: 3 offense, 4 defense Top returning players: Joseph Eck, sr., QB/RB/DB; Goeffrey Soneson, sr., TE/ LB; Ryan Herl, sr., TE/LB; Bryce Younger, sr., DB. Team notes: The Railers enter a rebuilding year of sorts after taking a big hit with graduation from a team that went 4-5 a year ago. The most notable of losses was quarterback Easton Smith and running backs Dalton Hensley and Clay Feik, all of whom had multiple years of experience. Eck, Younger, Herl and Soneson all started last year, and Eck looks to make the shift from running back to quarterback, likely to be

used as a running quarterback in Amrein’s offense. From the running back spot, Eck had 70 carries for 369 yards and scored three times a year ago, also collecting 16 catches for 304 yards and three scores. He also was productive on defense, leading Ellis with 63 tackles. Soneson was a little used pass-catcher a year ago, but productive. He caught four passes for 59 yards and scored twice. Herl caught eight pases for 132 yards and a score, while Younger also got in the action with five receptions for 107 yards and a score. The Railers opened the season 3-0 with wins against Syracuse, TMP and Sublette, then lost five straight before closing the year with a win against Oakley.

FRONT ROW (from left): Daniel Eck, Austin McGuire, Darren Mclaughlin, Bryce Younger, Thomas Shepard, Konnor Pfeifer, Cody Eberle, Jake Eck, Zach Schiel, Toby Woodworth, Colten Lewis and Jaryn Wildeman.
