Covington, 15th year (118-40, 20th overall, 161-63) Last season’s record/playoff finish: 11-1, sub-state runner-up Returning starters: 10 offense, 9 defense Top returning players: Kirk Coomes, 6-2, 220, sr., RB/DB; Trey Sides, 6-0, 160, jr., QB/DB; Chris VanKooten, 6-2, 235, sr., OT/DT; John Gower, 6-0, 190, sr., FB/LB; Treylan Gross, 6-0, 190, jr., RB; Trey Thompson, 6-0, 170, TE/DB. Team notes: Two seasons ago, Phillipsburg broke through with its first state title in school history by winning the Class 2-1A state championship at Lewis Field Stadium in Hays. Back in 3A a year ago, the Panthers finished 11-1, falling just a short of a 3A state semifinal appearance with a 38-26 loss to eventual state runner-up Hesston. The Panthers are loaded up for another run with arguably the most experienced group in the state, returning all but one starter on offense and all but two on defense. The returning group includes collegiate hopeful Coomes, who amassed 167 carries, 1,312 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns, to go along with 94 tackles from his linebacker spot on defense.
2017 schedule (*district game) Sept. 1..................................................at Clay Center Sept. 8................................................at Smith Center Sept. 15..................................................... at Plainville Sept. 22....................................................... vs. Oakley Sept. 29............................................................vs. Ellis Oct. 6...........................................................at Larned Oct. 13............................................vs. TMP-Marian* Oct. 20...................................................... vs. Norton* Oct. 26........................................................at Russell* Coomes, a three-year starter along Sides, a junior quarterback, was instrumental as a sophomore in the Panthers’ title game, rushing for four touchdowns. On defense, Coomes will make the switch to defensive end this season. Also returning on both sides is Gower, a senior running back, linebacker and kick returner. Gower led the Panthers with 139 tackles a season ago, and rushed for 645 yards. Defensively, the Panthers look to be among the best with Coomes and VanKooten on the line and Gower, Jordan Ford and Thompson behind. The Panthers also have a big weapon in kicker Jon Hunnacutt. As a sophomore, he was 44 of 52 on point-after attempts and hit four of his five field goals. Under Covington, in his 15th year, the Panthers have continued to reach new milestones in recent seasons. Prior to 2014, the Panthers had never had 10 wins in a single season, and had never made the substate round. Since, Phillipsburg has had 11-win seasons the past two years.
