Team notes: After finishing with three wins two years ago, Russell slipped back to 2-7 last year, struggling with turnovers. The Broncos won their season-opener, 28-20 against Ellsworth in 2016, then lost twice before picking up their second win against Minneapolis in Week 4, 31-21. Nichols is the most experienced returning player for the Broncos. The 235-pound linebacker had 82 tackles to lead the team last year by a significant margin. The three wins two seasons ago was the most a Russell team has had since the Broncos went 4-5 in 2010. This is the fourth straight season Russell will open with Ellsworth with last season being the first win in the series.
