Team notes: The Tigers broke through in 2016 and did something no Stockton team had done in the eightman ranks — win a district championship and qualify for the playoffs. No Tiger team had made the postseason since 2002. Under third-year coach Phil Conyac, the Tigers were solid in the second half of the season after a rough start, and ended up going 4-1 in district play. The Tigers eventually lost
48-18 against perennial state to
power Wallace County in the first round, after leading the Wildcats 18-12 in the first half. The Tigers will miss the likes of playmakers Kian Coffey, Joel Green and Brayden Winters, but do return junior quarterback Brady Beougher, who completed 130 passes for 1,974 yards and 27 touchdowns. As well, Jalen Bassart, a junior, returns at running back, after he got 15 touches last season. Beougher also had 84 carries a year ago for 377 yards and scored five times in the run game. The Tigers again play in a district that is up for grabs. After the Tigers in first place last year, there was a three-way tie for second place among Lakeside, Northern Valley and Sylvan-Lucas. All but one of the district’s teams — Sylvan-Lucas at 6-3 — finished below .500.
