The Hays Smoke Made up of student-athletes from Hays High School, THomas More Prep-marian, Plainville and Stockton, among others, the Hays Smoke 18-under softball team captured a state title with a 4-0 record during the Kansas USA-ASA Class C State Tournament at Trusler Sports Complex in early July in Emporia. The Smoke were set to compete in the national tournament this weekend in Topeka. The Smoke team consists of: FRONT ROW (from left): Emily Schulte, Lexi Gottschalk, Malynn Plummer, Cora MIlbourne, Brooklyn Staab and Kayla Garvert. MIDDLE ROW: Sidney Duvall, MacKenzie Fagan, Alizon Helget, Britney Beck and Kaitlyn Brown. BACK ROW: Coaches Scott Staab, Ryan Gottschalk and Randy Gottschalk.

Tradgon McCrae A member of the Hays High School boys’ golf team during the spring, McCrae came up big this summer, qualifying for the Optimist International Junior Golf Championship in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The tournament is set for this weekend, played at the PGA National Resort and Spa. In total, the event brings together approximately 700 of the top youth golfers from across the world. Cole Zimmerman Zimmerman, a Hays MonDUFKV SLWFKHU DQG ÆUVW baseman, continued a strong summer by throwing a no-hitter against the Central Kansas Cyclones in a tournament on July 12. Zimmerman’s outing was UHGXFHG WR ÆYH LQQLQJV via the run rule, but the starter was sharp allowing just an unearned run with ÆYH VWULNHRXWV 7KH VRXWKSDZ KHOSHG KLV cause with a 1 for 2 showing at the plate.
