Maeson Dewey Through a 15-0 start for the Plainville High School volleyball team, the Cardinals’ senior hitter was averaging nearly kills per set as the Cardinals continued a climb in the Kansas Volleyball Association 2A rankings. Dewey had a season-best 18 kills in a three-set win against Trego and 16 in a three-set win against Oakley. Plainville moved to 15-0 on Sept. 13 by winning two matches in Stockton.
David McFarland McFarland, the Thomas More Prep-Marian quarterback on the football team, started his season in a monstrous way. The senior, in a loss to Abilene, threw a new state-record 63 passes for a new state-record 648 yards as the Monarchs nearly rallied from behind to win their season opener. He threw four touchdown passes, two to Tate Garcia and one each to Creighton Renz and Karl Rack. A week later, McFarland helped the 0RQDUFKV WR WKHLU ÆUVW ZLQ DV he threw for 218 yards in a win against Ellis in Week 2 of the season.
David Thompson The strong running back for the Logan-Palco football team, Thompson was QHDUO\ XQVWRSSDEOH LQ WKH ÆUVW two weeks of the season. Just as in his junior year, Thompson overpowered the Trojans’ ÆUVW WZR RSSRQHQWV 7KURXJK two games he had 297 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns to go along with two catches for 24 yards and a receiving touchdown. He also added in a punt return for a score in a 70-14 win against Northern Valley in Week 2.
Autumn Princ The standout distance runner for Sylvan-Lucas High School is off to a hot start to the 2017 cross country season. Just a sophomore, Princ won the Stockton Invitational on Sept. 9 by nearly two minutes. Princ covered the course in 20 minutes, 57 seconds, while a freshman from Lincoln was second at 22:24. Princ is the defending Class 1A state champion in cross country and won twice last spring in the state track DQG ÆHOG FKDPSLRQVKLSV ZLQQLQJ WKH $ 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.
