Jared Casey Just a freshman, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound Casey was key for the Plainville High School football team in its 2-0 start. Casey, from his spot on the defensive line, recorded seven tackles ÆYH VRORV LQ D ZLQ against Smith Center to open the season. Then in a 20-14 win against Norton, Casey racked up 11 tackles (10 solo) with two for loss and one quarterback sack. Plainville was 2-0 for the ÆUVW WLPH VLQFH DQG beat Smith Center for just the second time since 1992.
Crystal Whitten Whitten, a 5-foot-9 senior hitter for the Fort Hays State University volleyball team was key in the Tigers’ 8-0 start, the program’s best start since 2004. Whitten, from Wichita, was named to the all-tournament team at WKH )DLUÆHOG ,QQ 6XLWHV ,QYLtational in Salt Lake City. She also was named the tournament’s MVP, the second time in as many tournaments she earned the honor. Whitten led all competitors in the four-game tournament with 60 kills, averaging 3.53 successful attacks per set. David Thompson Keying a 2-0 start for the Logan-Palco High School football team, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound junior rushed for 389 yards through two games, averaging 10 yards per carry and collecting eight rushing touchdowns for the Trojans. He had a long carry of 65 yards for a score. Logan-Palco opened its season with wins against Triplains-Brewster and Almena-Northern Valley. Thompson also was the Trojans’ second-leading tackler through two games, collecting 14 per game.
Karee Dinkel The defending Class 3-2-1A state girls’ golf champion, Dinkel got the Thomas More Prep-Marian girls’ team off to a good start to the 2016 season. In the season-opening Hays High Invitational, Dinkel ÆUHG D WRXUQH\ ZLQQLQJ at Smoky Hill Country Club, leading the Monarchs to the win. Then in the second meet DW *RRGODQG 'LQNHO ÆQLVKHG second with an 83, losing on the scorecard playoff. The Monarchs, though, set a new program record with an 18-hole 364.
