Maitland Wiltse Wiltse, a junior forward for the Otis-Bison High School boys’ basketball team, spurred the Cougars’ 4-0 start with a double-double average. At 6-foot-5, Wiltse averaged 23.5 points and 11 rebounds per game in the hot start. His best game came against Stafford, where he scored 36 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Jesse Staples Staples, one of the starting running backs for the Smith Center High School football team, played a key role in the Redmen’s 12-1 run and Class 2-1A state championship in 2017. Staples rushed for 1,402 yards and 27 rushing scores as the Redmen claimed their ÆUVW FKDPSLRQVKLS VLQFH ZLQQLQJ ÆYH VWUDLJKW IURP 2004 to 2008. In the 43-7 win in the title game against St. Mary’s-Colgan, Staples rushed for 131 yards and three scores. His best game came in the second round against Elkhart when Staples rushed for 259 yards and four scores, a touchdown feat he accomplished twice this season.
Ethan Nunnery Nunnery, a 5-foot-11 point guard for the Hays High School boys’ basketball team, poured in a career-best 30 points in a road loss at Class 6A Junction City. Nunnery is back for his senior season after having to sit out most of 2016-17 for the Indians after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the second game of his junior campaign. Aubree Dewey Dewey, a 5-6 guard for the Plainville High School girls’ basketball team enjoyed a strong start for the Cardinals. Through five games, Dewey averaged 19.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 assists per game. She scored 33 in a loss to Russell and put up 21 points in a win against Lincoln as Plainville started the year 2-3. She recored a double-double in a Dec. 12 win against Natoma.
