Eric Gfeller
The Sharon Springs-Wallace County senior quarterback rushed for five touchdowns and threw three more in the Wildcats’ 74-58 win against Ingalls in the Eight-Man Division II playoffs on Nov. 7. In the Wildcats’ first game since the death of senior running back Luke Schemm, Gfeller propelled his team to a sub-state rematch with the Victoria Knights. Gfeller collected 400 yards of offense — 285 on the ground on 38 carries and 115 through the air, completing nine of 17 pass attempts.
Mauricio Castorino
The sophomore forward for the Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team was named the MIAA Player of the Year. The first-team all-conference selection led the MIAA in points during the regular season with 26, accumulating nine goals and eight assists. He had a .231 shot percentage for the season, including a .538 shots on goal percentage. Castorino adds Player of the Year honors in the conference after earning MIAA Freshman of the Year honors last year.
Cory Keehn
The Fort Hays State senior cross country runner participated in the NCAA Division II Championship Meet last Saturday in Joplin, Missouri. Keehn qualified for the national meet by placing second at the Tigers’ regional meet, which was also held in Joplin. The senior finished the 10K regional course in 29:51, 12 seconds off the winner. Keehn routinely has been the Tigers’ top runner throughout his final collegiate season. He also placed second at the MIAA Championships held at Sand Plum Nature Trail.
Hannah Waldman
The Wheatland-Grinnell senior was an integral part of the Thunderhawks’ run to the Class 1A-II state championship. Waldman did most of her damage as a hitter in the front row but made plays all over the court during the state tournament on Oct. 30-31. She helped Wheatland-Grinnell capture its first volleyball state championship since the start of the cooperative agreement with a win over Axtell in the championship match.
