Ricky Hockett The Thomas More Prep-Marian senior infielder and pitcher led the Monarchs to a13-5 record through their first 18 games. Hockett helped the Monarchs split with Great Bend on April 21 with a two-run homer to left-center in the bottom of the sixth inning to give TMP a 7-5 win at LArks Park. Less than a week later, the senior carried the team to another win, tossing a seven-inning no hitter against Russell. Hockett finished the game with four strikeouts and a perfect 0.00 WHIP. He recently committed to continue his baseball career at Kansas Wesleyan.
Estefania Lopez Lopez, a Fort Hays State University senior thrower, continued a dominant senior season with a record-setting performance at the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Maryville, Mo., on May 8. The Valencia, Spain, native won the javelin for the second consecutiv year. Her throw of 166 feet broke the meet record for the event. Lopez placed second at the NCAA Championships a year ago.
Paige Baird The Northern Valley freshman got her high school track career off to a fast start. In the first handful of meets of the spring, Baird set school records in the 200, 400 and 100-meter hurdles, climbing into the HDN honor roll in all four events — 100-meter dash included — and became a candidate for four medals at the state track meet. Baird also is a standout on the Huskies basketball and volleyball teams.
Albany Schaffer A signee to play volleyball at the University of Louisinia at Monroe, Schaffer is capping her softball career for the Hays High Indians in grand fashion. The senior leads the team in home runs with five and is second in hits (26), RBI (15) and batting average (.464). Schaffer had one of her best days of the season against Liberal on May 3. The outfielder went 4-for-8 with five runs, four RBI, four steals and a game-ending home run.
