Nathan Shepherd
Shepherd, a junior defensive tackle for the Fort Hays State football team, was named the defensive most valuable player in the 50th Mineral Water Bowl on Dec. 5 in Excelsior Springs, Mo. Shepherd recorded a season-high 14 tackles against the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. He also added 1.5 tackles for loss in his team-leading tackling performance in the Tigers’ first eight-win season and postseason berth since 1995. He finished the season with 60 tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks.
Brendon Brenner
The senior big man for the Ellis Railroaders boys’ basketball team dropped 30 points in a nail-biting victory Dec. 11 against Hoxie in the Castle Rock Classic. Brenner scored the first seven points of the game and finished the first half with 19 points. He added 10 rebounds, even though he fouled out late in the game. He added 20 points and 11 rebounds in a championship loss the following day.
Beth Bohuslavsky
The Fort Hays State women’s basketball team earned a No. 1 ranking after a 9-0 start, and Bohuslavsky, a senior guard from Dwight, Neb. is a big reason why. Through nine games, Bohuslavsky leads the Tigers in minutes played (291), 3-point percentage (47%) and assists (31) and and is second in scoring (12.7 points per game). She clinched the Tigers’ victory over Emporia State, the nation’s top team at the time, with a steal that allowed the Tigers to run out the clock for a 71-70 win.
Chase Prester
A senior for the Russell High School wrestling team, Prester began his 2015 season 7-0, picking up a pair of victories in the Osborne Invitational after opening the season with a win against Trego’s Corbin Schoenthaler in dual action. After Osborne, Prester won the Jeff Giles Invitational in Ellsworth, again defeating Schoenthaler via an 8-3 decision to claim the tournament at 152 pounds. Prester is a returning Class 3-2-1A state qualifier.
