Welcome to the 2012 McLeod County Fair By Scott Schochenmaier President of the McLeod County Agricultural Association n behalf of the McLeod County Agricultural Association and my fellow ambassadors of the county fair, welcome to the 140th McLeod County Fair. It is hard to believe that less than a month from now, the McLeod County Fair will be in the history books. As the Fair Board finalizes plans, you can feel the excitement and anticipation growing stronger each day. The phone is constantly ringing and entry applications are being downloaded off our brand new, user friendly, website. Take a minute and check it out … lots of great pictures and tons of helpful information. Along with all of our old favorites, the 4-H program, open class competitions, fine arts, gardening displays, and grandstand entertainment, the McLeod County Fair is truly a remarkable cross section of all McLeod County has to offer. With 140 years of the fair, we are truly fortunate for the gifts and talents of our county residents. Many new and exciting events are planned for this year’s County Fair. I will try and hit some of the highlights that are planned. This year’s fair runs from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Sunday, Aug. 19, at the fairgrounds in Hutchinson. Two nights of Extreme Autocross and motocross will be featured in the grandstand, along with our very popular, Extreme Demolition Derby. I’m told by my grandstand ambassadors that the demo derby this year is a “don’t miss” event! Our annual sweet corn feed will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15, in the outdoor mall area. For our tractor enthusiasts, we have arranged for the Allis Chalmers tractor parade to make a stop on Wednesday evening at the fair. Come out and take a look at the vintage equipment as it makes its way across Minnesota. Wednesday will also feature the band Them Pesky Kids on the C&L Stage in the North Corporate Tent. This is their second trip to Hutchinson. The band rocked the Civic Arena a year ago and we had to book them to kick off the 140th County Fair in style. Thursday evening, a new event is planned. “Rock and Wrestling” takes center stage. We are happy to welcome back to Hutchinson the American Wrestling Federation. Last spring at Hutchinson High School, we were all treated to the marvels of professional wrestling. The AWF promises a new and exciting show for us, and we can’t wait to see them. This is an all-ages show, and 12 or younger will be admitted for free. Kids, bring Mom and Dad, and enjoy a beautiful Thursday night at the County Fair. And, by the way, our local favorite teacher/wrestler, Chad Harlander, is promising a “return to the ring” that night, so come out and cheer Chad and the others on. Blurred Vision takes the stage at 6:30 p.m. and will play before and after wrestling, so plan on staying late. Friday is jam packed with a full slate of activities and music. Once again, we are turning the clock back to the 1980s. Back by popular demand is Ladies of the ’80s. The band debuted on the C&L stage two years ago and was a huge crowd pleaser. It will be opening for regional favorite Hairball, who puts on a show like no other. Outdoors under the big tent is the only way to reminisce about those big hair days.

The laser and light show is something to experience in the big tent. Come early and remember the ’80s again. Saturday again is Kids Day and we have some special things planned. You will need to come and see what is new. In addition, we will pause for an afternoon to reflect on the wonderful freedoms we enjoy and thank those who served, and the many who paid the ultimate price. Gate admission on Saturday is free to all active service members and veterans. We look forward to opening our gates to thank the veterans. Proof of service will not be required, a veteran’s word is all we need. At 4:30 p.m. in the North Corporate Tent, we will recognize all veterans in McLeod County and the surrounding area. Many special events are planned for the program. We will also welcome to the C&L Stage national recording artist Rockie Lynne. Rockie’s powerful voice and deep patriotic
to a close, but not without finishing it up in style. This year, we welcome a fun new event to the North Corporate Tent — wine. Our friends at Crow River Winery will join us this year to teach us all about wine and offer some samples along the way. It will be a great way to get the day rolling along with strolling through the classic cars which will return for the secondannual McLeod County Fair Classic Car Show. If that is not enough, Ribfest is back and better than ever. Check the website for times to taste some of the area’s best ribs. Classic Cars, wine and ribs will sure get you in the mood for the County Fair’s favorite, the Whitesidewalls, again back by popular demand. The boys will be taking the stage at 5:30 p.m. to help us dance the 140th fair away. Thanks to the countless volunteers, our sponsors for donations and the support we receive from McLeod County throughout the year. A big thank you to county staff for keeping the fairgrounds in great shape. For more events, visit the fair’s website at www.mcleodcountyfair.com. Again, welcome and have a great time at the 140th McLeod County Fair!

good food fair … and there’s
food
johnson@hutchinsonleader.com Let’s face it, it’s hard to resist a just-offthe-grill bratwurst in a toasted bun, an order of hot-from-the-fat cheese curds or a powdered sugar-dusted funnel cake. It’s all so good. It might make it easier to “just say no” if you knew the ugly truth. A brat in a bun weighs in at as much as 800 calories with 60-plus grams of fat, fried cheese curds tip the scale at about 560 calories with almost 40 grams of fat, and a funnel cake will set you back about 760 calories and 44 grams of fat. Oh, the pain. Through the years, fair treats have gone from the traditional such as snow cones and root beer floats to encompass just about everything from fried pickles on a stick to fried candy bars, egg rolls and gyro sandwiches. No matter how you sip, slice or slather it, it’s hard to say no to the trifecta of fat, sugar and salt. Better fair food options exist. Suggestions for saving calories and fat grams include: cotton candy at 171 calories and no fat, a large pretzel at 340 calories and 2
grams of fat or a hot dog on a bun with ketchup and mustard at 250 calories and 15 fat grams. Need help to avoid a diet meltdown? Here are some tips to follow: Plan your munchies. Don’t go to the fair hungry because that’s a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Take the edge off your hunger at home. It will give you more control when faced with a steady streak of food vendors. Pick and choose your favorites. With the variety of tasty treats available, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and overloaded. Take a walk around the fairgrounds before making any food choices. See what’s available and choose your very favorites. Share it. If you’re itching to sample everything in sight, take a friend along and split the items. You’ll only do half the
damage. Drink water. There’s nothing like a cool drink of water to clean your palette. Often, when you think you’re hungry, you may actually be thirsty. Drink up. It was Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone With The Wind,” who said, “I'll think about it tomorrow ...” If that’s your approach to County Fair eating, that’s OK. Just know that it takes about five steps to walk off one calorie. A slice of pepperoni deep-dish pizza at 390 calories per slice will cost you 1,950 steps. Exercise physiologists recommend walking 10,000 steps per day. This equals about five miles. If you can’t say no and break the calorie bank at the Country Fair, there’s hope — increase your exercise and cut back on your food intake.

DOUG TUMAN ISN’T JUST A SUCCESSFUL FARMER, HE’S THE MAN BEHIND McLEOD COUNTY’S ANNUAL DAIRY COMPETITION
By TERRY DAVIS davis@hutchinsonleader.com McLeod County has been a land of dairy farms ever since settlers of European descent began moving here in the 1850s and 1860s. Even with a decline in the number of dairy farms in recent decades, McLeod County farmers continue to produce some of the best dairy cows in Minnesota, according to Doug Tuman. Tuman should know. Not only is the Hutchinson farmer a well-respected dairyman and dairy breeder himself, but he has overseen the McLeod County Fair’s renowned dairy competition for more than 40 years as superintendent of the fair’s open class dairy division. “McLeod, Steele (Owatonna) and Olmsted (Rochester) are probably not only the biggest county fair dairy competitions, but have excellent quality, too,” Tuman said. “It

is pretty prestigious to win here. I’ve always called this a mini-state fair because so many of our exhibitors go on and do well at the State Fair.” And that continues even as numbers have slipped slightly in recent years because of the decline in the number of dairy farms. “We’ve gone down in numbers, but not in quality,” Tuman said. “We’ve got a good dairy fair even though we don’t have the (number of) farmers we once had.”
Overflow crowd That dairy is perhaps the most popular animal exhibit at the McLeod County fair is easy to see. The Agribition/Cattle barn is stuffed with dairy cows, leading to the setup of an overflow tent the past several years. While now directly under Tuman’s supervision, 4-H dairy exhibiting continues strong. Perhaps the fastest growing cat-
egory, however, is the 4-H beef show. It is overflowing, from using space in the swine barn to needing a large tent this year, too. Tuman arranges the procurement of the tent and oversees the “stalling” for the 4-H dairy. He helps set up the gates, makes sure the milkhouse is prepared and arranges to have manure hauled away each day. The open class attracts about 175 dairy animals from several breeds — everything from calves to aged milking cows. They’ll begin rolling in at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15. “The biggest challenge we have is getting everyone stalled at the fair — making sure everyone has enough room,” Tuman said. The open class dairy show begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, the fourth day of the five-day fair. Tom Foss of Cambridge is this year’s dairy judge.

10 McLeod County Fair
Dairy Continued from page 10 “It is kind of a big day for everybody,“ Tuman said. The 4-H Dairy Show is at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 16. Tuman said he relies on a good crew of volunteers to help set up everything to make the stars of the show — the cattle — comfortable. “I have three very good helpers — Scott Rickeman and Tim Albrecht of Hutchinson and Mark Vacek of Glencoe,” he said. “We have a lot of good people involved in (the dairy) organizations.” Many of them worked at the state Holstein Show that took place at the fairgrounds in June. He also credits his wife, Jeanne, for all the work she puts in helping to stall the entries and then clerking the show. “She is a big help,” Tuman said.
Never envisioned 40 years The Tumans had been married only a couple of years and were farming just southeast of Hutchinson when Alfred

Block and Reuben Ulrich approached him. They thought he’d do a good job and promised that the area’s competitive dairy farmers wouldn’t give him any trouble. And that’s pretty much been the case for the entire time. “It is an honor. It’s been OK,” he said. He praised now retired fair secretary Marian Filk for coming up with the annual herdsmanship award. It rewards the exhibitor or family who does the best job of keeping their exhibit area clean throughout the fair. “It has really kept the barns clean,” Tuman said. “It is one of best things we’ve done.” Once the fair is up and running, Tuman’s role switches from organizer to ambassador. “I usually walk around and answer questions,” he said, “and I usually have cattle there, too, to exhibit.” Though he has been at the job more than 40 years, Tuman still is having too much fun to think about stepping aside. He no longer milks Brown Swiss cows himself at home, but he raises breeding bulls and heifers that are sold all over the United States, Canada and Mexico. He has about 100 head of cattle on X-Cello-O Farm along State Highway 22.

The supreme junior champion lined up for 2011’s dairy show at the McLeod County Fairgrounds’ show arena. “The people,” was his short answer when asked what he most enjoys about being the fair dairy superintendent. “I’ve
never had a problem with anyone. Any issues that have come up have gotten resolved.”

Fair plans a salute to seniors THERE’S LINE DANCING AND MUSIC FROM THE KINGERY FAMILY SINGERS AND WALLY PIKAL Opening day of the 140th annual McLeod County Fair celebrates senior citizens. Senior line dancers from the Hutchinson Senior Center will strut their stuff from 12:30 to 1 p.m. on the C&L Stage in the North Corporate Tent. The group meets weekly at Hutchinson Recreation Center to practice their line-dancing moves. Following the dancers at 1 p.m. is the senior citizen program. Providing special entertainment will be the Kingery Family Singers from Atwater. Bluegrass is their
music of choice. Baseball fans may remember Mike Kingery. He joined the Kansas City Royals as a free agent out of high school. From there, he played for the Seattle Mariners and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He retired from baseball in 1996, returning to his hometown of Atwater. Not ready to go home? You’re in luck. Head to the pavilion to hear the music of Wally Pikal. The polka master will perform from 2 to 4 p.m.

Rockie Lynne will perform on the C&L Stage in the North Corporate Tent. The country music artist understands his audience. Lynne is a veteran, too. He served as a paratrooper in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. The singer-songwriter has had four recorded songs on the Billboard country singles chart — “Lipstick” in 2005, “Do We Still” in 2006, “More” in 2007, and “I Can’t Believe It’s Me” in 2008. In 2010, Lynne released his third album titled “Songs for Soldiers.” It includes wellknown numbers such as “Will the Circle Be Broken,” “I’ll Fly Away,” “Rockin’ in the Free World,” “America the Beautiful” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

On her own AFTER SPENDING LAST YEAR SHADOWING FORMER MANAGER, CASEY WALTERS DIVES INTO ROLE AS FAIR’S GO-TO PERSON By KAY JOHNSON johnson@hutchinsonleader.com Sitting at the big oak desk in the fair manager’s office is Casey Walters. Her desktop is littered with stacks of papers, and a laptop computer is open, sitting in the middle of it. Last year, Walters was the new kid on the block, shadowing Marian Filk, thenfair manager, through the County Fair season. This year she’s on her own. “There are definitely things I’m learning along the way,” said the Hutchinson
native. “It’s been going well. I really like it.” The official transfer of duties from Filk to Walters took place in October at the annual meeting of the McLeod County Agricultural Association. Like Filk, Walters’ title is executive secretary/fair manager. While the face is different, the work hasn’t changed. With the County Fair only weeks away, there are still plenty of things to do. One of the changes on Walters’ watch is a new McLeod County Fair website. The web address has stayed the same — www.mcleodcountyfair.com — but the site has a new look. Navigation is easier with County Fair information along the left-hand side of the home page. Each day of the fair has its own blue tab, which can be found along the top of the home page. Looking for opening day information? Click on the Wednesday tab and a schedule of events is available. Premium books are available at the County Fair office at the McLeod County Fairgrounds in Hutchinson. Information is also available online.

McLeod County Fair Manager Casey Walters is flying solo this year. She joined the fair office in May 2011. Last year, she shadowed Marian Filk, former fair manager. Non-livestock entries were due Aug. 1. Entry Day is Tuesday, Aug. 14. “Open class entries from 2010 to 2011 were up,” Walters said. “Quilts have really taken off and wine has expanded, too.” A new family dining area is being added this year. It’s behind the South Tent in the outdoor mall area. More picnic tables will
be available, plus new triangle-shaped tables for cozy conversation. Walters said memorial money that once was used to purchase benches at the fairgrounds will now go toward buying more of the new three-sided tables. “Donations are welcome,” she said.

Grants help expansion of children’s barnyard Thanks to grants from the Southwest Initiative Fund and the Hutchinson Community Foundation, the children’s barnyard at the McLeod County Fairgrounds is better than ever. “We decided to expand the children’s barnyard to increase agricultural awareness in our community,” fair manager Casey Walters said, “and to educate young children and families about the importance of agriculture in their everyday life.” All the popular animals will be back, plus new interactive areas. One exhibit guaranteed to attract the younger set is “Farmer For A Day,” where children will be able to experience a variety of farm-related activities.
You can say what you want about “puppy dog eyes,” youngsters will feel ba-a-a-a-a-d if they miss the opportunity gaze into a goat’s eyes at the children’s barnyard during the McLeod County Fair.

McLeod County Fair 23
New, familiar acts fill Promise Stage schedule Favorites the Cogley Sisters, Mona Hjerpe and Maizy the Clown are returning to perform on this year’s Promise Stage. In an interesting twist, a couple of performers who have appeared at RiverSong Music Festival are making their first appearances at the County Fair. Last month, the duo — the Okee Dokee Brothers — entertained in the children’s tent at RiverSong. They will play from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17. Playing bluegrass and folk, the Okee Dokee Brothers share their humor and homespun wisdom through their original music. Their jokes appeal to their audience — children — as well as to parents. If you’re looking for a good reason for the kids to turn off their video games and stop watching TV, this is it. Taking the Promise Stage on Sunday, Aug. 19, is Patchouli, featuring Bruce Hecksel and Julie Patchouli. The acoustic duo will perform from 11 to 11:45 a.m. and from noon to 12:45 p.m. One-half of the duo has a connection to
Hutchinson. Hecksel is a “PK” or “preacher’s kid.” His dad, the Rev. Stanton Hecksel, served as pastor of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, from 1967 to 1976. Hecksel said he and Patchouli are often described as “Joni Mitchell meets Santana.” They write and perform their own music, which Hecksel described as “modern day folk music with the purpose of inspiring and uplifting.” Patchouli draws heavily on inspiration from the 1960s and ’70s folk revivalists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Simon and Garfunkel. To this mix, they add elements of Spanish flamenco and many other African and Latin rhythm styles. New performers on the Promise Stage include: Greta Grosch, actress; the Scottish Dancers; Star Michaelina, magician; Theatre of Fools; Stoney Point; David Malmberg, ventriloquist; and Dazzling Dave, the yo-yo master.
Patcholi — Bruce Hecksel and Julie Patchouli — will perform Sunday, Aug. 19. The duo describes their music as “Joni Mitchell meets Santana.”

McLeod County Fair 25
Ribs, classic cars, music and midway POPULAR RIBFEST BACK FOR SECOND YEAR, AS IS CAR SHOW While the smoky scent of barbecue perfumes the air, fairgoers can get into the act by participating in the Ribfest’s People’s Choice Award Judging. Introduced last year, the event’s popularity could be measured by the length of the line. It stretched from the fair office to the grandstand. “It’s a big attraction,” fair manager Casey Walters said. “Get in line early.” A couple of related events are also planned for Sunday. The car show is back for its second year, but bigger and better. In addition to cars, motorcycles have been added. More space was also needed, so it’s moving from the pavilion to the northeast corner of the fairgrounds. Registration is from 9 to 11 a.m. with trophies awarded at 3 p.m. Dash plaques
will be given to the first 50 entries. Following the car show, mosey on up to the pavilion for a blast to the past with Whitesidewalls. Back by popular demand, the band is known for its devotion to the golden music of the rock ’n’ roll and doo-wop era of 1954 to 1964. From Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly to Ricky Nelson, Jerry Lee Lewis and the Everly Brothers, the Whitesidewalls offer a diverse show that covers the greats from this decade of music.
The Whitesidewalls, who cover the golden music of the rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop era, will perform Sunday following the car show.
And don’t forget the midway The McLeod County Fair is chock-full of things to do and see. Interested in rides and games? Head to the Midway. Amusement Attractions is the new carnival provider. “The Ferris wheel will be back,” Walters said. “And don’t miss the carnival light show.” While businesses ply their products in the Commercial Building, amateurs compete for ribbons and premium checks in
everything from chickens and rabbits to homegrown flowers and vegetables. If you’re a fan of the special 4-H livestock shows such as the dairy show and the sheep show, look for these activities on

This year marks the McLeod County Fair’s 140th event. To commemorate it, an exhibit of fair memorabilia will be displayed in the Country Diner. Operating the eatery for the second year will be the Pizza Ranch from Glencoe. Fairgoers are asked to write their memories and send them to fair manager Casey Walters or drop them at the fair office. Photos, buttons, old ribbons with dates on them, posters and flyers are welcome, too. Donations of original material will be accepted. If you want the items returned, copies will be made and the originals returned to the owner. All memorabilia needs to be identified with the following information: Owner’s name, address and telephone number; Date and year (if known, estimate if unknown); Who is in the photo? What is going on in the photo? Is there a story to go along with the photo? If so, share it. Funding for this project came from an Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund grant.
